Get ready for polls, Zardari tells party

KARACHI, Sept 2: President Asif Ali Zardari, who is also co-chairman of the PPP, advised leaders of his party on Sunday to prepare for general elections which he said would be held on time.

Presiding over a meeting of senior party leaders from Sindh and some members of the provincial cabinet at Bilawal House, he also asked the ministers, members of parliament and PPP office-bearers to reach out to people, especially in far-flung areas and set up contacts with voters.

Nine militants killed in Bajaur clashes

KHAR, Sept 2: Nine militants, among them key Taliban ‘commanders’, were killed and several others injured as clashes in the border area of Bajaur Agency continued on Sunday.

Official sources said security forces and volunteers of a local peace committee attacked several hideouts and militant positions in Batwar area of Salarzai tehsil.

MQM, PPP fail to agree on LG set-up

ISLAMABAD, Sept 2: The Pakistan People’s Party and Muttahida Qaumi Movement have failed to reach accord on the shape of the new local government system in Sindh, and the MQM is reported to have decided to discontinue negotiations with the government on the issue.

The MQM, according to a party insider, has refused to hold further talks on the issue after a series of meetings held recently with the PPP in Islamabad and Karachi did not achieve any breakthrough.

Civilian control to be restored in Dera Bugti

DERA BUGTI, Sept 2: The Balochistan government has decided to restore complete civilian control in the troubled district of Dera Bugti and strictly monitor performance of the officials posted there and keep the local administration out of tribal politics.

As a first step, a new officer has been posted as the deputy commissioner of Dera Bugti and instructed that he and other officers should not get involved in local tribal politics and make their presence felt by working to restore peace.

NA, Senate limp to delayed sessions today

ISLAMABAD, Sept 2: A judiciary-battered parliament limps to somewhat delayed sessions of its two houses on Monday, clouded by more potentially bruising battles during an expected quick march through the remainder of its tenure.

But for Ramazan and Eid holidays last month, the National Assembly and Senate should have met earlier to take stock of the situation after the Supreme Court struck down a new contempt of court law passed by them while both parliament and the PPP-led coalition government were still reeling from the court-ordered disqualification of then prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani in June.

Zardari to chair crucial meeting on power crisis

ISLAMABAD, Sept 2: Amid growing gap between demand and supply of electricity, President Asif Ali Zardari is expected to chair a meeting in Karachi on Monday (today) during which the concerned functionaries of federal government and Sindh will attempt to formulate a financing plan aimed to keep loadshedding within reasonable limits in the period leading up to general election.

Sources told Dawn on Sunday the ministries of water and power, petroleum and natural resources and finance had been engaged in hectic consultations over the last several days to finalise a five-month financing plan for the energy sector. However, there was no agreement on the size of the proposed plan, with the finance ministry insisting that it could not “go beyond the resources allocated in the budget”.

Ties with India improving, says Malik

KARACHI, Sept 2: Interior Minister Rehman A. Malik said on Sunday that relations between Pakistan and India were improving in accordance with the wishes of the people of two countries.

Talking to reporters after meeting Syed Nazim Ali Nizami, the Sajjada Nasheen of Hazrat Nizamuddin Aulia, at the State Guest House here, he said important decisions were expected to be taken during Indian foreign minister’s upcoming visit to Pakistan to liberalise the issuance of visa for people.

Muslims are here to stay: US official

WASHINGTON, Sept 2: Muslims in America are here to stay, says Assistant US Attorney General for Civil Rights Thomas Perez, telling those who urge Muslims to ‘go home’: “This is their home.”

Addressing a large Muslim gathering here, Mr Perez pledged to “use every tool at our disposal” to ensure equal opportunities for all Muslims living in America.
