Obama: Romney has no 'single new idea'

Posted:

US President Barack Obama accused Republican foe Mitt Romney on Sunday of failing to offer a single new idea and being a relic of the last century as he revved up a pre-convention tour.Rattling through battleground states en route to the Democratic National Convention this week in Charlotte, North Carolina, Obama also rebuked Romney for ignoring the Afghan war during his own nominating speech. It was something to behold, Obama told a 13,000-strong crowd in Colorado, as he picked apart Romneys keynote address in Florida on Thursday night that marked the climax of a three-day Republican convention.Despite all the challenges we face in this new century, what they offered over those three days was an agenda that was better suited for the last century, Obama said.It was a rerun... we have seen it before -- you might as well have watched it on a black and white tv with some rabbit ears.Democrats say that Romney, who used his convention to try to tell his personal story and improve his likeability ratings, may have given Obama an opening by offering only sketchy policy stands. They are also framing Obama as a candidate of the future, with his slogan Forward, and to position the older Romney -- he is aged 65 while Obama is 51 -- as a contender from a bygone era.Obama said that Romney, with whom he is neck and neck in the polls ahead of the November election, had refused to reveal the secret sauce that would help him create jobs: he did not offer a single new idea.It was retreads of the same old policies we have been hearing for decades, the same politics that have been sticking it to the middle class for years, the president added. He also ripped Romney for having nothing to say in his speech in Florida about the Afghan war, which the president has promised to end responsibly in the same way that he brought troops home from Iraq.We are bringing our troops home from Afghanistan. And I set a timetable -- we will have them out of there by 2014. Governor Romney doesnt have a timetable. I think he is wrong.Romney has criticized setting a withdrawal date for US forces, saying doing so would aid US enemies. But he has also suggested that the right timetable for a withdrawal is by the end of 2014 -- a date already set by NATO.The Romney campaign meanwhile pounced on a slip by Obama supporter and Maryland Governor Martin OMalley, who was asked whether Americans were better off now than four years ago.No, but thats not the question of this election, OMalley told CBS show Face the Nation, blaming former Republican president George W. Bush for lingering agony in the US economy. We are not as well off as we were before George Bush brought us the Bush job losses, the Bush recession, the Bush deficits, the series of desert wars charged for the first time to... a national credit card.Romney was quick to exploit the comment, which offered support for the central conceit of his campaign that Obama, despite good intentions and soaring speeches, has done little to improve the economic lot of the middle class. This president can ask us to be patient. This president can tell us it was someone elses fault. This president can tell us that the next four years hell get it right, the former Massachusetts governor said in a statement. But this president cannot tell us that YOU are better off today than when he took office. America has been patient.Americans have supported this president in good faith. But today, the time has come to turn the page.Obama is on a four-day Road to Charlotte tour taking in territory that will decide Novembers election, in which his prospects are clouded by a painfully slow economic recovery and 8.3 percent unemployment.

Stosur ends Robson's run in US Open fourth round

Posted:

The seventh-seeded Australian finally clinched victory on her ninth match point to win 6-4, 6-4 and reach the quarterfinals.Robson had defeated former Grand Slam winners in her last two matches, but the streak ended against Stosur, who has yet to drop a set here this year. The 18-year-old Robson, who had upset Kim Clijsters and Li Na, double-faulted to hand Stosur the first set.Leading 5-2 in the second, Stosur had five match points on Robsons serve, but the 89th-ranked teenager saved all of them.Stosur then failed to serve out the victory, wasting two more match points. But she broke Robson in the next game to win in 1 hour, 38 minutes.

Djokovic makes quick work of Benneteau

Posted:

Novak Djokovic woke up early and got things over with in a hurry Sunday at the U.S. Open.Serving as the warm-up act for Andy Roddick in Arthur Ashe Stadium, the defending champion completed his second straight match without facing a break point and defeated No. 31 Julien Benneteau 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 to advance to the fourth round for the sixth straight year.Djokovic needed only 1 hour, 37 minutes to clear out of the stadium, where Roddick was the headliner on Sundays schedule.Last week, the 2003 champion announced he would retire after the U.S. Open. He followed Djokovic onto the court for a third-round match against Italys Fabio Fognini.Roddick could only hope hed be in for as easy a time as Djokovic had. The No. 2 seed from Serbia faced a break point in the opening game of the tournament, against Paolo Lorenzi. Djokovic lost that point and hasnt faced one since.Obviously, the serve is something Ive wanted to improve the last 15 months or so, Djokovic said. I wanted to get more free points on the first serve. Today, it was working very well.Djokovic finished with 13 aces with a top service speed of 128 mph. He said hes not so used to early wake-up calls at the seasons last major, where he has made the final the last two years and is more used to playing in prime time. To make sure he wouldnt be late for the third-round match, he shaved the night before and had a bit of stubble jutting from his chin by the early afternoon.Im not always the morning person, to be honest, Djokovic said. You try to go to bed early and try to wake up early and get your body moving obviously. I wanted to start very sharp from the first point, and Ive done that.Djokovics entire match took only 23 minutes longer than the first set between No. 4 David Ferrer and 2001 champion Lleyton Hewitt in Armstrong Stadium. Ferrer saved five set points in the first-set tiebreaker then went on to a 7-6 (9), 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 victory to advance to the fourth round for the 10th straight Grand Slam tournament. After saving his fifth set point, Ferrer won the point of the match, scrambling from side to side at the net to pick up back-to-back volleys by Hewitt, then angling off a backhand winner to set up his second set point, which he won.Hewitt broke early in the second set and got even in the match. But the 31-year-old, little more than three months removed from an operation to reconstruct the big toe on his left foot, wore down in the muggy, 79-degree heat and was limping between points at the end.Im not saying I was going to win, but if Id won the first set, it would have made life easier, Hewitt said.Later, 2009 champion Juan Martin del Potro, the No. 7 seed, defeated Leonardo Mayer 6-3, 7-5, 7-6 (9).

Pistorius stunned in 200 final at Paralympics

Posted:

A month after his groundbreaking Olympic debut, Oscar Pistorius was reeling from a stunning upset at the London Paralympics on Sunday. The Blade Runner had never been beaten over 200 meters until Brazilian sprinter Alan Oliveira came storming down the home straight to win by 0.07 seconds and dethrone the icon of the Paralympics.Pistorius later accused Oliveira of bending the rules.Having won his own legal battle to compete wearing carbon-fiber blades alongside able-bodied rivals, Pistorius suggested that Oliveira ran with longer prosthetics than should be allowed.Oliveira won gold in 21.45 seconds after overtaking Pistorius at the line at Olympic Stadium in front of a capacity 80,000-strong crowd. Not taking away from Alans performance hes a great athlete but these guys are a lot taller and you cant compete (with the) stride length, Pistorius said in a broadcast interview. You saw how far he came back. We arent racing a fair race. I gave it my best. The IPC (International Paralympic Committee) have their regulations. The regulations (allow) that athletes can make themselves unbelievably high.Weve tried to address the issue with them in the weeks up to this and its just been falling on deaf ears. For Pistorius, it is ridiculous that Oliveira could win after being eight meters adrift at the 100-meter mark.Hes never run a 21 second-race and I dont think hes a 21-second athlete, Pistorius said. Ive never lost a 200-meter race in my career.Oliveira insisted he had not broken the rules, and expressed disappointment with Pistorius criticism. He is a really great idol, and to listen to that coming from a really great athlete is really difficult, Oliveira said through a translator. I dont know who hes picking a fight with, its not with me.Oliveira was backed by Paralympis leaders. There is a rule in place regarding the length of the blades, which is determined by a formula based on the height and dynamics of the athlete, the IPC said in a statement. All athletes were measured today prior to competition by a classifier and all were approved for competition. The second half of Pistorius year in London is not running to script. At the start of last month, the South African reached the 400 semifinals and the 4x400 relay final. Competing at the Olympics was some achievement alone, though the medals were meant to come at the Paralympics. He was hoping to go one better than the trio of golds he won in Beijing, but can still leave London with the same haul.Next up is the 4x100 relay on Wednesday before he defends his titles in the 100 on Thursday and 400 on Saturday.

Arsenal beat Liverpool 2-0 for 1st league win

Posted:

Arsenal claimed its first Premier League victory and consigned Liverpool to its worst start to a season in 50 years with a 2-0 win at Anfield on Sunday, courtesy of goals by the visitors two big summer signings.Santi Cazorla slipped in Lukas Podolski for the Germany forwards opener in the 31st minute before the roles were reversed, with the Spain midfielder finding the net with a low 68th-minute shot that deflected in off goalkeeper Pepe Reinas elbow. They were Arsenals first goals of the new campaign and a third straight clean sheet lifted Arsene Wengers team into the top half of the standings. The sharpness gets better from game to game but overall we looked solid, Wenger said. We had a convincing team performance.Liverpool, which failed to add some much-needed signings to the squad on Fridays transfer deadline day, stayed in the bottom four with one point from three games under new manager Brendan Rodgers. That equaled the unwanted record of Bill Shanklys newly promoted side in the 1962-63 season. Two days after failing in their bid to sign free-scoring forward Clint Dempsey from Fulham, the hosts lack of attacking power was evident, with strikers Luis Suarez and Fabio Borini unable to create any noteworthy chances. New signing Nuri Sahin was subdued in midfield, too.It doesnt get any easier for Liverpool either, with an away match at Sunderland and then fierce rival Manchester United at home coming up after the two-week international break.Im disappointed with the scoreline because I thought we contributed very well to the game, Rodgers said. I cant question the players attitudes. Their commitment has been brilliant since Ive been here.Weve got what weve got, Rodgers added of his squad. Well assess it again in January. Its something that I cant control now.For Arsenal, however, there are signs that all is not lost after the summer departures of striker Robin van Persie and holding midfielder Alex Song arguably its two best players last season.Cazorla, the Spain playmaker, has slotted in well in midfield, where fit-again Abou Diaby and Mikel Arteta had excellent games alongside him.And in Podolski, the Gunners have a forward who has an eye for goal like Van Persie and who can hopefully bring the best out of fellow attacker Olivier Giroud, who remains without a goal but had an encouraging display.Podolskis goal came after Steven Gerrard lost possession carelessly in Arsenals half. The German passed to Cazorla to start the counterattack, racing forward to receive a neat pass and slip a low left-footed finish past Reina.Giroud wasted a great chance four minutes before the break, before Arsenal was forced to weather some concerted pressure at the start of the second half.Liverpool couldnt turn its dominance into goals, though, and the visitors made them pay. Cazorla drifted across the pitch, switched the ball to Podolski and took the return pass before scoring. The whole team have had a strong game, said Diaby, the France international who looks set for a regular place in Arsenals midfield if he can stay free of injury. We need to keep going.

Button keeps cool to win crash-marred Belgian GP

Posted:

Jenson Button kept calm amid the chaos of the crash-marred Belgian Grand Prix on Sunday to record his second win of the season, while Formula One championship frontrunner Fernando Alonso saw his overall lead trimmed after being sent flying off the track following Romain Grosjeans reckless driving. It was Buttons first victory at Spa and the 14th of the British drivers career and probably one of the easiest as he led from start to finish, oblivious to the mayhem behind him. This is such a special circuit, so to get a victory here from light to flag is very special, Button said. It hasnt been an easy year for me. Were going to enjoy this for a little while longer before we head to Monza and hopefully do the same.Button triumphantly zigzagged across the track as he approached the finish line and then clapped his hands together in celebration. He then stood on his McLaren and leaned his head back as he clenched both fists. The car felt very good to drive and I could control the degradation of the tires. Its always easier to do that when youre leading, said Button, who climbed to sixth place overall. Its a massive long shot to win the title, but today proves that you can claw back 25 points very quickly. Theres still 63 points to make up, but anythings possible.Alonso, who is chasing his third F1 title, was relieved not to be badly hurt. You can have an injury in your hand or your head with a crash like that, so I am lucky in that aspect, Alonso said. I felt a train coming with a big, big hit.Defending champion Sebastian Vettel benefited from the mayhem to finish second and cut Alonsos lead to 24 points putting the two-time champion right back in contention.I was reasonably confident because I know anything can happen here and you can overtake, Vettel said.Kimi Raikkonen was third, continuing the consistent form hes shown all season long with his third straight podium and sixth overall. My car was not the nicest to drive the whole race, Raikkonen said. I was fighting to get the best out of it and we managed to get some key points, so that was the main thing. The crash also took out Mexican driver Sergio Perez, and Grosjean who was given a one-race ban for dangerous driving and will miss the Sept. 9 race in Monza, Italy.Grosjean went for a small gap and clipped Hamiltons McLaren. That sent both cars spinning and led to Grosjeans Lotus flying over Alonsos Ferrari, which then took out Perezs Sauber. All four drivers escaped injury.A visibly frustrated Hamilton briefly confronted Grosjean after the incident and tapped the side of his own helmet with his finger after getting out of his car.Following a miserable days qualifying on Saturday, Vettel was relieved to get on the podium after starting from 10th on the grid.It was a crazy race, after the first corner where a few cars went off, the German driver said. The car was quite good in the race and we were able to pick up some pace. It was a fantastic race, great to come second.Germanys Nico Hulkenberg was fourth for Force India, ahead of Ferraris Felipe Massa in fifth and Red Bulls Mark Webber, who had started from 12th because of a gearbox penalty.Alonso, who had picked up points in every race this season, was lucky to escape serious injury as Grosjeans Lotus went over his car and narrowly missed the Spaniards head.Button was not affected by the crash and maintained his lead as the safety car went out onto the track and piles of smashed car parts were cleared.

Paralympics: China sets world record

Posted:

In an exciting farewell at the 6,000-capacity venue, China won the mixed C1 to C5 team sprint in 48.454 seconds, ahead of Britain in 49.519 -- both faster than the world record China had earlier set in qualifying. The Velodrome has proved a happy hunting ground for Britain, the hosts having won seven out of 10 golds during the Olympics and also topping the Paralympics medal table. From the 18 events, Britain won 15 medals (five golds, seven silvers and three bronzes), to finish ahead of China on nine (five golds, one silver, three bronzes) and Australia on eight (four golds, two silvers and two bronzes).Fittingly, the final anthem played was Britains God Save the Queen, for Anthony Kappes and his pilot Craig MacLean who won the mens individual B sprint. In B classification races, athletes with a visual impairment compete on a tandem bicycle with a sighted pilot on the front.Contested in three duels over six laps, Kappes and MacLean beat compatriots Barney Storey and his guide Neil Fachie, who pulled up in the second race.I just kept the power on the pedals. I didnt know it was quite so convincing till we crossed the line, MacLean said.Kappes and MacLeans win meant that the final event, the mixed C1 to C5 team sprint, disputed over three laps, would determine whether Britain would reign alone at the top of the gold medals count.C1 to C5 cyclists have an impairment that affects their legs, arms and/or trunk. The lower the class number, the greater the impact of their impairment.Chinas Ji Xiaofei (C4), Liu Xinyang (C5) and Xie Hao (C2) edged out Britains Jon-Allan Butterworth (C5), Darren Kenny (C3), Richard Waddon (C3).We just put focus on the race and all the energy into the race, Liu said.We didnt cooperate very well in the qualifier, so before the final we talked about cooperation and tried to do better.Kenny said: Its been the most amazing experience to race in this Velodrome. In a way its good us getting beaten, its just showing how the standard is going through the roof. Our days of dominance are starting to go.Wed like it to have gone the other way, when its that tight, but its exciting like that.Earlier in the 3,000m womens individual B pursuit, Philippa Gray and her pilot Laura Thompson of New Zealand, who set a new world record of 3:31.530 in qualifying, won the gold medal in 3:32.243.Irelands Catherine Walsh and Francine Meehan were beaten into second place in 3:36.360.There were two options: either catch the Irish or beat our own time and just hang on for dear life, said Gray.Costing 87 million ($138 million, 110 million euros) and clad in cedar, the Velodrome has been the scene of many memorable days of racing. When it reopens, the venue will form the heart of a new VeloPark for use by the local community, clubs and elite cyclists. The cycling action now switches to Brands Hatch, the former Grand Prix motor racing circuit outside London, where four days of medal events begin on Wednesday.

Bells 88 help England beat South Africa

Posted:

Bells innings was the cornerstone of Englands 224 for four as they won with 20 balls to spare after good work by their bowlers restricted South Africa to 220 for eight.Together with Warwickshire colleague Jonathan Trott (48), Bell shared a second-wicket stand of 141 after England lost captain Alastair Cook in the first over of their innings when he was lbw to a superb late inswinger from fast bowler Dale Steyn. However, the Proteas -- without rested paceman Morne Morkel -- couldnt make further early inroads despite Steyn hitting Trott, a former South Africa youth international, on the finger. As the floodlights took full effect on a gloomy day where the overcast conditions had prompted Cook to field first, Bell cover-drove left-arm seamer Wayne Parnell for four and advanced down the pitch to flat bat him over cover-point for another boundary.Bell later drove left-arm spinner Robin Peterson high over long-off for six.He was reprieved though on 65 when dropped by Peterson at mid-on off Lonwabo Tsotsobe. Next ball Bell pulled the left-arm seamer for four.Trotts patient innings ended when he was lbw on the sweep to slow left-armer Dean Elgar after South Africa reviewed Australian umpire Simon Taufels original not out decision. After Ravi Bopara fell cheaply following a brief rain break, Bell tried to slap a short ball from Steyn on the offside and was caught behind one-handed by leaping South Africa captain and wicket-keeper AB de Villiers to end a 137-ball innings featuring a six and eight fours.England still needed a further 35 runs for victory but the innings ended in a blizzard of boundaries, with left-hander Eoin Morgan a run-a-ball 36 not out and Craig Kieswetter, who ended the match with a superb off-driven six off Steyn, unbeaten on 21.Earlier, James Tredwell atoned for dropping two catches with three wickets as England restricted South Africa to 220 for eight. The off-spinner took three for 35 in eight overs, with all his wickets stumpings completed by Kieswetter -- the first England wicket-keeper to have three stumpings in a one-day international.Tredwell, who took two for 49 in Englands four-wicket series-levelling win across London at The Oval on Friday, got his chance this campaign when England rested number one spinner Graeme Swann because of a longstanding elbow injury. And it seemed England might miss Swann as much for his slip catching as his bowling on Sunday when Tredwell dropped openers Hashim Amla, on four, and Graeme Smith, on 26, both off fast bowler Steven Finn.Dropped catches had helped Amla become the first South African to a Test triple century, at The Oval last month, and make 150 in an 80-run win in the second one-dayer in Southampton. As it was, missing Amla on Sunday only cost England 41 runs when he was bowled by medium-pacer Bopara for an innings top score of 45.Amlas exit was the start of a South Africa collapse from 100 for one to 115 for four with JP Duminy stumped off a well-flighted Tredwell delivery.De Villiers (29) and Parnell (five) were also both stumped by Kieswetter as Tredwell took two wickets for no runs in five balls. The series concludes at Nottinghams Trent Bridge ground on Wednesday.
