Cellphone service Rehman Malik strikes again

ISLAMABAD, Sept 21: The violence on Friday kept the nation spellbound and hooked to their television sets but despite the rampage it was a very quiet day for many..

The reason for this was the blocked phone service. Cellphones had fallen silent across Pakistan on early Friday morning cutting off nearly half of the 100 million users from the world at the behest of the interior ministry.

Two cops among 17 killed in Karachi

KARACHI, Sept 21: At least 17 people, including two policemen, were killed in sporadic acts of violence during rallies taken out by different religious organisations in protest against the anti-Islam film on Friday. Over 100 people, 12 policemen among them, were injured..

Five cinema houses, three police mobiles, three banks and a number of shops were set on fire and looted by the protesters. Two police stations were also attacked by the violent mob.

Islamabad, Rawalpindi turned into battlefield

ISLAMABAD, Sept 21: The twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi turned into a battlefield on Friday as people protesting against the anti-Islam film clashed with police in different areas. Over 45 people, including 21 policemen, were injured and 35 protesters arrested..

The massive clash between the police and demonstrators took place in Khyaban-i-Suharwardi, near Serena Hotel. The place is at a stone’s throw from the diplomatic enclave, I.J. Principal Road, Islamabad Highway and Benazir Bhutto Road.

Peshawar violence claims six lives

PESHAWAR, Sept 21: Six people were killed and 67 others, among them 11 policemen, wounded in firing, brick-batting and arson attacks as protesters enraged over the anti-Islam film clashed with police in different areas of the provincial capital on Friday..

The protesters, some of them armed, threw petrol bombs and stones, besides firing shots at policemen. The demonstrations began early in the day, but gained momentum only after Friday prayers.

Raja urges UN to make law against hate-mongers

ISLAMABAD, Sept 21: Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf again stressed upon the international community on Friday to work together for peaceful co-existence among followers of all religions and for taking strict and effective measures against hate-mongers who played with religious sensitivities..

Raja Asharaf made the appeal during his speech to mark the Youm-i-Ishq-i-Rasool (PBUH) at the PM Secretariat. The federal cabinet at a special sitting had decided on Wednesday to designate Friday as a ‘Love for the Prophet Day’, following countrywide protests against the anti-Islam film. It was a national holiday.

Host govts must protect diplomats, missions, says US

US President Barack Obama also emphasised this point in a television interview recorded earlier, saying: “The message we have to send to the Muslim world is that we expect you to work with us, to keep our people safe.”

Demonstrations against hate film in Muslim countries, Europe: Thousands protest peacefully

PARIS, Sept 21: Protests against a hate film and some anti-Islam sketches turned deadly in Pakistan, but remained mostly peaceful in other Muslim countries..

In France, where the publication of the sketches stoked anger over a blasphemous video made in California, the authorities banned all protests over the issue.
