Egypt court upholds dissolution of parliament Posted: Egypts Supreme Administrative Court has upheld last summers ruling that dissolved parliament just days before Mohammed Morsi was declared victor in the countrys presidential election. It ruled against an appeal by a former lawmaker who wanted the court to reinstate two-thirds of parliament, only excluding the third that was deemed to have been elected illegally. The Saturday ruling upheld the decision of the Supreme Constitutional Court, which said parliamentary elections had incorrectly allowed party members to contest the third of seats set aside for independents.Parliament convened once after its dissolution, on orders from Morsi, whose Brotherhood group controlled the most seats.Morsi now holds legislative powers in the absence of parliament and after the forced retirement of generals he previously shared powers with.

Two Pakistanis stabbed in Greece during Anti-racist demo Posted: Two Pakistani immigrants were in hospital late Saturday after being stabbed on the margins of an anti-racism rally on the outskirts of Athens, police said. One of them was said to be in a serious condition. The attack, in the western suburb of Metamorfossi, came after the end of the demonstration, in which about 300 people were protesting racist violence.A motorbike and a car stopped in front of the men and a group of people got out and attacked them with knives. A third Pakistani immigrant with them at the time escaped unhurt, said police.Since the neo-Nazi group Golden Dawn won seats in parliament in the June election, there has been a sharp rise in racist attacks in the immigrant quarters of Athens. In recent weeks the once-fringe group has organised Greeks-only food handouts and blood donations, and has twice ousted migrant peddlers from street markets to the delight of local operators and the outrage of authorities. The groups ratings have risen to over 10 percent in recent opinion polls.Public Order Minister Nikos Dendias earlier this month stripped the groups 18 lawmakers of their police guards after one of them was allegedly implicated in the smashing of immigrant trading stalls. But some observers say that the groups members have benefited from judicial inertia and a suspiciously soft-handed response by police, who usually fail to arrest Golden Dawn members even when under direct attack by them.Last month, a young Iraqi was stabbed to death by five bikers.Protests againt the surge in racist violence also took place in the port of Piraeus, next to Athens, and in another Athens suburb.

Fighting still raged in the afternoon. The confrontations first broke out as Salafists and tribesmen tried to prevent a Zaidi protest against administrative appointments in their regions. The two sides, armed with rocket-propelled grenades, brought in reinforcements and the situation was tense in the city, witnesses said.Residents said tensions escalated after the appointment of supporters of the Islamist party Al-Islah to head Yemens northern provinces, a move rejected by the Zaidis. The clashes come ahead of a national dialogue scheduled for later this year as part of a political agreement that led to the February departure of president Ali Abdullah Saleh following a year of unrest.Zaidi rebels have indicated they would take part in the dialogue.Dozens of people have been killed since last year in sectarian clashes between the rebels and Sunni Salafists trying to tighten their grip on northern Yemen, in the absence of government control.Zaidis make up a minority in the Sunni-majority country. |

Australia beat West Indies in rain-hit World T20 Posted: David Warner and Shane Watson blasted Australia to a rain-affected 17-run win over West Indies in the World Twenty20 on Saturday. With the win, Australia advanced to the Super Eights, and the second team to advance from Group B will be decided when West Indies and Ireland meet on Monday.West Indies totaled a formidable 191-8 thanks to aggressive half-centuries from Chris Gayle (54) and Marlon Samuels (50), but Warner launched Australias brilliant reply with 28 off 14 balls, which included three boundaries and two sixes. He was the only Australian wicket to fall, caught behind off fast bowler Fidel Edwards at 30-1 after 13 balls.Watson continued the challenge with an unbeaten 41 off 24 balls including three sixes and two boundaries following his two-wicket bowling spell, and Mike Hussey had 28 off 19 before the match was stopped after 9.1 overs because of a downpour that didnt let up.Australia, at 100-1, was 17 runs ahead of the 83 par score on the Duckworth/Lewis method.Watson was named player of the match for his contribution with bat and ball.Earlier, Gayle and Samuels hit four sixes each in smashing half-centuries to propel West Indies to what appeared to be a winning total.Gayle, dropped on 4, also hit five boundaries in an entertaining 54 off 33 balls while Samuels made a 32-ball 50 including three boundaries to treat a capacity crowd at R Premadasa Stadium.Gayle started cautiously and struggled to middle the ball. He was dropped at third man by Watson off seamer Mitchell Starc. But he found his form in the fifth over bowled by Starc, uncorking three boundaries and a six, and continued to dominate until he was caught and bowled by Watson at 93-3 in the 11th over.Gayle shared 39 runs with Johnson Charles and 46 with Samuels to redeem West Indies after it lost opener Dwayne Smith on 8-1.Samuels was out caught by Warner off spin bowler Brad Hogg at 140-4 in the 16th over.Fast bowler Starc returned the best figures for Australia with 3-35. Watson took 2-29.
Hamilton takes pole position for Singapore GP Posted: Lewis Hamilton maintained McLarens recent dominance by claiming pole position for the Singapore Grand Prix, and said on Saturday the season was mapping out perfectly for a Formula One championship challenge.Hamilton gave McLaren a fourth consecutive pole for the first time since 1999, and his chances of also making it four straight wins in Sundays race were boosted by Williams Pastor Maldonado snatching a surprise second place in qualifying, providing a buffer to the Britons title rivals. We have put ourselves in the best position, so we need to capitalize on that, Hamilton said. Weve done the work we need to do to put us in a strong position for tomorrow the key will just be to stay out of trouble and look after the tires.Ive always believed that if we could start the season strongly, wed be able to pull ahead. Weve been there or thereabouts all season, but now were starting to see the real strength of my team pull through.Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel qualified a disappointing third after being the fastest in all three practice sessions. He was surprised he couldnt manage at least a front-row spot. Its hard to say what happened. A little disappointed, especially Q3, Vettel said. Its a shame it didnt come together at the end.Maldonado provided the shock of the night by taking second. Aside from his surprise win at the Spanish Grand Prix, the Venezuelan has been in the points only one other time this season. He was even more enthused about the chances for a shock victory by the fact that the car performed well during the long-stint, heavy-fuel race settings.Im really looking forward to the race because yesterday we showed very good pace, very consistent. So I think it is going to be a good one for us this timeJenson Button of McLaren qualified fourth, ahead of Fernando Alonso of Ferrari, who holds a 37-point lead over Hamilton in the championship standings with seven races to go.We were not quick enough in free practice, and not quick enough in qualifying, Alonso said. The McLarens were unbeatable, at least for pole.Starting fifth, on the inside, we have a good position to fight for the podium, which is maybe the maximum for the weekend.Force Indias Paul di Resta equaled a career best by qualifying sixth, one place ahead of Red Bulls Mark Webber, who was cleared by stewards after complaints by Marussias Timo Glock that the Australian caused interference in the first qualifying session.Lotus Romain Grosjean will start from eighth, recovering from heavy contact with a wall earlier in the qualifying session. The Frenchman again beat teammate Kimi Raikkonen, who was down in 12th, dealing a blow to his championship challenge.Mercedes pair Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg finished ninth and 10th, having failed to set times in Q3. Instead they only did formation laps on harder tires, meaning they will start on that rubber in the race, giving them different strategies to the cars ahead.Felipe Massa of Ferrari qualified 13th, a place ahead of Saubers Sergio Perez, who finished second in the previous race but whose car had been off the pace throughout practice. At the tail end of the grid, Charles Pic of Marussia will have 20 seconds added to his race finishing time as punishment for ignoring red flags during practice.
