Obama vows to 'stand fast' as anti-US violence spreads Posted: President Barack Obama vowed Friday to stand fast against spreading anti-US violence raging in the Arab world, as he mourned four Americans slain in Libya after their remains were flown home.Four transfer caskets draped in American flags were slowly borne from the belly of a giant C-17 transport plane by slow-walking Marines in dress uniforms, and set down in a hangar for a heart-rending homecoming.US ambassador Chris Stevens and the three other Americans died on Tuesday when a mob furious over an anti-Muslim film made on US soil torched the American consulate in Benghazi, part of a region-wide eruption of violence.Greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends, Obama said, quoting the Bible as he honored four American patriots who he said embodied national qualities of courage, hope and idealism.Their sacrifice will never be forgotten, we will bring to justice those who took them from us. We will stand fast against the violence on our diplomatic missions, Obama said at Andrews Air Force base outside Washington.A furious wave of anti-American violence ripped across the Middle East and North Africa Friday with a crowd invading the US embassy compound in Tunis, and guards at the US embassy in Khartoum firing warning shots at protestors.Fresh violence erupted in Yemen and Cairo and protests took place in Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia, Kashmir, Pakistan, Iraq, Israel and the Gaza Strip, Morocco, Syria, Kuwait, Nigeria and Kenya.Five people were killed and dozens injured in Fridays violence alone.Obama said that the awful loss and terrible images may cause some to question the dangerous work of US diplomats abroad, but argued that America must not abandon its global mission to spread dignity and freedom.Even as voices of suspicion and mistrust seek to divide countries and cultures from one another, the United States of America will never retreat from the world, he vowed.Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told grieving relatives of Stevens, information officer Sean Smith and former navy seals Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty that the killings dishonored the spirit of the Arab Spring. The people of Egypt, Libya, Yemen, and Tunisia did not trade the tyranny of a dictator for the tyranny of a mob, she said.US military and intelligence agencies have already launched a manhunt in Libya for the militants who staged the assault on the consulate in Benghazi.Theres an intense focus on finding the attackers, a US defense official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told AFP.The State Department was meanwhile working with nations in the Middle East and North Africa to boost security at its missions. In Yemen and Libya, teams of US Marines flew into to boost security. The violence erupted in response to excerpts of a movie, Innocence of Muslims which mocks the Islamic faith, which went viral on YouTube.National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor told AFP the White House reached out to YouTube to call the video to their attention and ask them to review whether it violates their terms of use.
Violence explodes as Muslims protest anti-Islam film Posted: Anti-US protests by crowds whipped into fury by a film that mocks Islam erupted across the Muslim world, as violence exploded in Sudan, Lebanon, Tunisia and Yemen leaving five dead on Friday and dozens injured. The protests broke out when Muslims emerged from mosques following the main weekly prayers to voice their anger at the anti-Islam film made in the United States.President Barack Obama vowed Friday to stand fast against anti-US violence in the Arab world, as he witnessed the return to US soil of the remains of four Americans killed in Libya.Their sacrifice will never be forgotten, we will bring to justice those who took them from us. We will stand fast against the violence on our diplomatic missions, Obama said at Andrews Air Force base outside Washington. In Khartoum, guards on the roof of the US embassy fired warning shots as a security perimeter was breached by dozens of Islamic flag-waving protesters, part of a crowd of thousands who had earlier stormed the British embassy and set fire to the German mission, an AFP reporter said.A police vehicle near the US embassy was also torched as hundreds of demonstrators broke through an outer security cordon after one protester was hit by a police vehicle and killed, a medic and the reporter said. The body of another protester was later found outside the embassy compound, but the circumstances of his death were not immediately clear.Police had earlier fired volleys of tear gas in a bid to prevent the 10,000-strong crowd marching on the US embassy after they had swarmed over the German mission, tearing down the flag to replace it with a black Islamist one before torching the building.European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso condemned the embassy attacks as against the rules of the civilised world.Nothing justifies these kinds of attacks, he said.In Tunis, police firing live rounds and tear gas drove angry protesters from the US embassy, some of whom had stormed the compound, with clashes there killing at least two people, an AFP journalist said. The demonstrators had managed to clamber over a wall after setting several vehicles alight. Protesters also ransacked and torched an American school in Tunis, the TAP news agency reported.Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki in a television address called the attack an unacceptable act against a friendly country.Violence also erupted in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli, where a crowd of 300 Islamists attacked and set fire to a KFC restaurant, sparking clashes with police in which one person died and 25 were injured, security sources said. The attack came as Pope Benedict XVI arrived in Lebanon for a three-day visit, calling for Christian-Muslim coexistence and attacking religious extremism. And with tempers boiling across the Muslim world over the movie since the US ambassador to Libya was killed in an attack on an American consulate in Benghazi on Tuesday, the Pentagon said it has sent a team of Marines to Yemen. The announcement came as tension spiraled again in Yemens capital Sanaa, with security forces firing warning shots and water cannon to disperse crowds trying to reach the American embassy.Security forces blocked all roads to the mission, after similar confrontations left four people dead on Thursday, an AFP reporter said. With much of the anger directed at the United States, where the film was made reportedly by a Coptic Christian and promoted by a rightwing pastor, Washington had earlier ordered heightened security at its embassies worldwide.

Death Valley recognized as world's hottest spot Posted: Californias Death Valley has racked up another extreme accolade its now deemed the worlds hottest place.Long known as the lowest, driest and hottest spot in the United States, Death Valley this week was named as the hottest place on the globe by the World Meteorological Organization. An international team of weather experts said the title comes after it investigated a long-held record from El Azizia, Libya, and found that an inexperienced weather observer recorded the temperature incorrectly. The Libyan record was logged as 136.4 degrees Fahrenheit (58 Celsius) on Sept. 13, 1922 90 years ago Thursday. It was set after the observer broke a more reliable instrument and used a complicated and less reliable type of thermometer, experts said. They believe the temperature was off by about 5 degrees. The new official highest recorded surface temperature is 136 degrees Fahrenheit (57.8 Celsius) on July 10, 1913, in Death Valley. The average daily high temperature in Death Valley last month was 113 degrees Fahrenheit (45 Celsius). The hottest day this year was July 11, with 128 degrees (53.3 Celsius). The committee included experts from Libya, the United States, Egypt and other countries.

Aging Mars rover discovers geological mystery Posted: NASAs Opportunity rover, older brother to the Curiosity rover that landed on Mars last month, has made a new discovery that geologists find both puzzling and exciting, the US space agency said Friday.Opportunity, which has been on the Red Planet since 2004, has come across an outcrop of tiny spheres -- up to around an eighth of an inch (three millimeters) in diameter -- the likes of which scientists have never seen before. This is one of the most extraordinary pictures from the whole mission, said Opportunitys principal investigator, Steve Squyres of Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. We never have seen such a dense accumulation of spherules in a rock outcrop on Mars, he added, in a statement. At first glance, the researchers thought the objects resembled iron-rich spheres, nicknamed blueberries, discovered near the Opportunity landing site. The so-called Martian blueberries are formed when minerals separate from water and become hard masses inside sedimentary blocks -- theyre part of the evidence Mars used to be wet.But closer investigation revealed the new discoveries are different in concentration. They are different in structure. They are different in composition. They are different in distribution, Squyres said. Its going to take a while to work this out, so the thing to do now is keep an open mind and let the rocks do the talking.Opportunity found the spheres at an outcrop called Kirkwood, in the Cape York segment of Endeavour Craters western rim.Although Opportunitys prime mission was completed more than eight years ago, the rover has continued on bonus missions since then.Fellow Mars rover Spirit, also launched in the summer of 2003, continued working until March 2010.The most recent Mars lander, Curiosity, is on a two-year quest to explore Mars geology. The $2.5 billion robot is currently in the Gale crater, trundling towards Mount Sharp.
Artificial bat cave built to combat killer disease Posted: Conservationists have built an artificial bat cave deep in the Tennessee woods to see if it can be a blueprint for saving bats who are dying by the millions from a fungus spreading across North America. The $300,000 project by The Nature Conservancy is believed to be the first manmade hibernating structure for bats in the wild. Unlike natural caves, it will be cleaned annually to keep the fungus that causes white-nose syndrome from reaching lethal levels. We talked with other people, waiting for one of them to call us crazy and no one did, said Gina Hancock, director of the Tennessee chapter of the conservancy. The cave is assembled from prefabricated concrete sections. At 78 feet (23.7 meters) long and 16 feet (4.8 meters) wide, it is about the size of a single-wide mobile home. It has an 11-foot-(3.3-meter) tall ceiling that is textured so bats can cling to it.Most of the cave was then covered with at least 4 feet (1.2 meters) of soil. All that can be seen from the surface is an air intake that serves as the bat entrance. It looks like a concrete septic tank set on its end with the bottom cut out.The artificial cave is placed near a natural cave with an established hibernation population of gray bats. The plan is to coax some of them to the new digs by emitting ultra-sonic bat calls on loudspeakers.White-nose syndrome, named for the sugary smudges found on affected bats snouts, prompts bats to wake from hibernation and die when they fly into the winter landscape in a futile search for food. First detected in upstate New York in 2006, the fungal infection has killed more than 5.7 million bats as it spread from the Northeast. The genius of the artificial cave is that it can be cleaned annually to keep the fungus from reaching lethal levels.Cory Holliday, Tennessee program director of caves and karst for the conservancy, said it would be impossible to keep the fungus out of the new cave. The fungus will do what the fungus will do, Holliday said.Holliday said in natural caves, fungus levels in new roosting areas are relatively low. The prevalence increases in the second year and spikes in the third year. Each spring, after the bats have dispersed from hibernation, workers will open a door set into the wall of the artificial cave, remove the guano and pressure wash-the ceiling and walls with a solution of water and Formula 409.If all goes as planned, the clean cave would resemble the first-year environment of a new roosting area in a natural cave. The fake cave could hold perhaps 250,000 bats. Holliday said he would be delighted if 1,000 show up this winter. He said the winter of 2013-2014 will provide the first solid test of the concept. The cave is designed to be easily replicated with precast culvert sections that slide together and are then sealed. The earth uphill from the cave is graded so rainwater will flow through a pipe into a basin in the cave floor, overflowing it to help keep humidity at around 85 percent. The basin also gives the bats a water source. The project was built on land the conservancy bought and then deeded to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. It is near the Tennessee-Kentucky border, just south of the Fort Campbell U.S. Army post.
