Global action vital to end Syrian violence: Ban Ki-moon Posted: Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon demanded international action to stop the war in Syria, telling a somber gathering of world leaders Tuesday that the 18-month conflict had become a regional calamity with global ramifications. In sharp contrast to the U.N. chief, President Barack Obama pledged U.S. support for Syrians trying to oust President Bashar Assad a dictator who massacres his own people.Opening the U.N. General Assemblys annual ministerial meeting, Ban said in his state of the world speech that he was sounding the alarm about widespread insecurity, inequality and intolerance in many countries.Putting the spotlight on Syria, the U.N. chief said the international community should not look the other way as violence spirals out of control. We must stop the violence and flows of arms to both sides, and set in motion a Syrian-led transition as soon as possible, he said. While Obama didnt call for an end to the violence, he made no mention of arming the opposition and stressed the importance of ensuring that what began with citizens demanding their rights does not end in a cycle of sectarian violence.Together, we must stand with those Syrians who believe in a different vision, a Syria that is united and inclusive, where children dont need to fear their own government, and all Syrians have a say in how they are governed, Sunnis and Alawites, Kurds and Christians, said Obama, who arrived at the U.N. after Ban spoke. That is what America stands for; that is the outcome that we will work for with sanctions and consequences for those who persecute; and assistance and support for those who work for this common good, the U.S. president said.Ban, declaring that the situation in Syria is getting worse every day, called the conflict a serious and growing threat to international peace and security that requires attention from the deeply divided U.N. Security Council. That appears highly unlikely, however, at least in the near future.Russia and China have vetoed three Western-backed resolutions aimed at pressuring Syrian President Bashar Assad to end the violence and enter negotiations on a political transition, leaving the U.N.s most powerful body paralyzed in what some diplomats say is the worst crisis since the U.S.-Soviet standoff during the Cold War.Brazils President Dilma Rousseff, whose country by tradition is the first to speak, supported the secretary-general, saying: There is no military solution to the Syrian crisis. Diplomacy and dialogue are not just our best option: they are the only option. With the Security Council unable to act, the Emir of Qatar, Sheik Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, said Arab countries should intervene out of their national, humanitarian, political and military duties and do what is necessary to stop the bloodshed ... in order to guarantee a peaceful transition of power in Syria. He cited a similar precedent when Arab forces intervened in Lebanon in the mid-1970s to stop the civil war in a step that proved to be effective and useful.French President Francois Hollande said almost 30,000 people have died and asked: How many more deaths will we wait for before we act? How can we let the paralysis of the United Nations to continue? I know one thing is certain, the Syrian regime will never again take its place in the council of nations. It has no future among us, he said. He called on the United Nations to protect liberated zones within Syria and to ensure humanitarian aid to refugees.Ban also expressed profound concern at continuing violence in Afghanistan and Congo, increasing unrest across west Africas Sahel region where al-Qaida has made inroads, and the dangerous impasse between Israelis and Palestinians that may close the door on the two-state solution. The shrill war talk by Israel in recent weeks, in response to its belief that Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons, has been alarming, Ban said, and Tehrans rhetoric threatening Israels existence is unacceptable.Any such attacks would be devastating, he said, reminding the presidents, prime ministers, monarchs and diplomats from the 193 U.N. member states of the need for peaceful solutions and respect for international law.Leaders have a responsibility to use their voices to lower tensions instead of raising the temperature and volatility of the moment, he said.
Obama summons world leaders to reject extremism Posted: Confronting global tumult and Muslim anger, President Barack Obama exhorted world leaders Tuesday to stand fast against violence and extremism, arguing that protecting religious rights and free speech must be a universal responsibility and not just an American obligation. The impulse towards intolerance and violence may initially be focused on the West, but over time it cannot be contained, Obama warned the U.N. General Assembly in an urgent call to action underscored by the high stakes for all nations. The gloomy backdrop for Obamas speech a world riven by deadly protests against an anti-Islamic video, by war in Syria, by rising tension over a nuclear Iran and more marked the dramatic shifts that have occurred in the year since the General Assemblys last ministerial meeting, when democratic uprisings in the Arab world created a sense of excitement and optimism. Obama had tough words for Iran and condemned anew the violence in Syria as Bashar al-Assad tries to retain power.Six weeks before the U.S. presidential election, an unmistakable campaign element framed Obamas speech as well: The presidents Republican rival, Mitt Romney, has tried to cast him as a weak leader on the world stage, too quick to apologize for American values.Romney, speaking at a Clinton Global Initiative forum just miles from the U.N., avoided direct criticism of Obama in deference to the apolitical settings of the day, but he said he hoped to return a year later as president, having made substantial progress on democratic reforms.Obama, likewise, avoided direct politicking in his speech but offered a pointed contrast to his Republican opponents caught-on-tape comment that there is little hope for peace between Israelis and Palestinians.Among Israelis and Palestinians, Obama said, the future must not belong to those who turn their backs on a prospect of peace.Secretary-General Ban Ki-moons opening state-of-the-world speech to the General Assemblys presidents, prime ministers and monarchs sketched the current time as one when too often, divisions are exploited for short-term political gain and too many people are ready to take small flames of indifference and turn them into a bonfire. The leaders are assembled here as anger still churns over a made-in-America video that mocked the Prophet Muhammad. The video helped touch off protests throughout the Muslim world that have left at least 40 people dead, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya.Obama, a onetime professor of constitutional law, delivered what amounted to a lecture on what he presented as the bedrock importance of free speech, even if it comes at a price. He stressed that just as the cruel and disgusting video did not reflect U.S. values, the backlash against it did not represent the views of most Muslims. Still, he said, the events of the last two weeks speak to the need for all of us to address honestly the tensions between the West and the Arab world that is moving towards democracy.Obama said the notion of controlling information is obsolete in the Internet age, when anyone with a cellphone can spread offensive views around the world with the click of a button. But he said leaders must be swift to respond to those who would answer hateful speech with violence and chaos. In his last international address before the November elections, the president had strong words for the leaders in Iran and Syria but broke no new ground on any actions the U.S. might take. He warned that while there is still hope of resolving the dispute over Irans nuclear program through diplomacy, that time is not unlimited. Without laying out specifics, he added: The United States will do what we must to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, in an interview with The Associated Press, dismissed the question of Irans nuclear ambitions and claimed that despite Western sanctions his country was better off than it was when he took office in 2005. And he said a new world order needs to emerge, away from American bullying and domination.God willing, a new order will come together and well do away with everything that distances us, Ahmadinejad said. Now even elementary school kids throughout the world have understood that the United States government is following an international policy of bullying.Bullying must come to an end. Occupation must come to an end, he said in a wide-ranging interview on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly. As for the rising violence in Syria, Obama told the U.N. delegates, The future must not belong to a dictator who massacres his people. If there is a cause that cries out for protest in the world today, it is a regime that tortures children and shoots rockets at apartment buildings. We must remain engaged to assure that what began with citizens demanding their rights does not end in a cycle of sectarian violence.Obamas defense of free speech was respectfully received by world leaders. Yet it was clear that different understandings abound on the proper exercise of free expression. The foreign minister of Indonesia, home to the worlds largest Muslim population, said Obamas speech was a clarion call for all nations to reject intolerance, calling it an issue that galvanizes all of us. But Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa added that freedom of expression should be exercised with consideration to morality and public order.Dina Zakaria, a spokesman for the Muslim Brotherhoods political party Freedom and Justice, said cultural differences between the U.S. and the Muslim and Arab world over the limitations of freedom of expression will persist. No one can argue against freedom of expression, but the Western understanding of it is different from ours, she said. Will this freedom allow for contempt of religion? For us it is different. For us it is a red line as Muslims and Christians as well.Obama did not hesitate to underline some of the hopeful developments in the world under his watch. The war in Iraq is over, and our troops have come home, he said. We have begun a transition in Afghanistan, and America and our allies will end our war on schedule in 2014. Al-Qaida has been weakened, and Osama bin Laden is no more. Nations have come together to lock down nuclear materials, and America and Russia are reducing our arsenals. In one lighter moment in a somber speech, Obama drew laughter from the Assembly with one comment in his remarks on free speech: I accept that people are going to call me awful things every day.
Posted: Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer is casting aside a cost-cutting specialist and bringing in software industry veteran Ken Goldman to be chief financial officer as the Internet companys management orchestrates a potentially expensive turnaround attempt. The departure of CFO Tim Morse isnt a shock. After joining a company, new CEOs often reshuffle senior executives while trying to assemble a management team thats better suited for a shift in direction. But it usually takes six to nine months before an incoming CEO hires a new chief financial officer, said BGC Financial analyst Colin Gillis.Mayer is replacing Morse just two months after Yahoo lured her away from Google Inc., suggesting that there may have been some friction between the two, Gillis said.Morse, 43, will leave the company next month to make way for Goldman, who take over as CFO on Oct. 22. Yahoo didnt immediately disclose whether Morse will receive a severance package or reveal how much it is paying Goldman to leave his current job as CFO of Fortinet Inc., a maker of computer security software.Since joining Yahoo in June 2009, Morse has spent much of his time pruning costs an endeavor that enabled the company to boost its profits even as its revenue has been drooping.Although she hasnt yet shared her vision publicly, Mayer is believed to be focusing on steps designed to delight Yahoos audience of 700 million worldwide users but not necessarily investors. As part of that process, Yahoo could pour more money into some products and remove some of the ads that clutter its Web pages to the exasperation of some users. She is sharing more of her vision with Yahoo employees in a series of meetings beginning this week.I think we can kiss (Yahoos) increasing (profit) margins goodbye for a while, Gillis said.Yahoo has declined to discuss Mayers plans. The company says she will talk more extensively next month when the company reports its third-quarter results. A specific date for the earnings release hasnt been set.The companys stock added 8 cents to $15.76 in Tuesdays extended trading after the CFO change was announced. Yahoo shares have been hovering between $15 and $16 through most of Mayers brief tenure, reflecting Wall Streets uncertainty about what direction she intends to push the company.

Zardari strongly condemns sacrilegious film Posted: President Asif Ali Zardari has called upon the international community not to become silent observer on the blasphemy and criminalise such acts that destroy the peace of the world and endanger its security by misusing freedom of expression.Addressing the 67th session of UN General Assembly session in New York ‚ he strongly condemned the acts of incitement of hate against the faith of billions of Muslims and the Holy Prophet Hazrat Mohammad (PBUH). He urged the United Nations to immediately address in earnest this alarming concern and the widening rift to enable the comity of nations to be one again.Recounting the sacrifices rendered by Pakistan in the fight against terrorism and extremism‚ the president said no country and no people have suffered more in the epic struggle against terrorism‚ than Pakistan. He said we have lost over seven thousand Pakistani soldiers and policemen and over thirty seven thousand civilians. He said his wife who was the countrys first elected woman leader Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto was martyred through the bullets and bombs of terrorists. We have lost our Minister for Minority Affairs‚ Shahbaz Bhatti and Governor Punjab Salmaan to the mindset of extremism. The president said drone strikes and civilian casualties on our territory add to the complexity of our battle for hearts and minds through this epic struggle. He said those say Pakistan has not done enough should not insult the memory of our dead and the pain of our living. He said the world should stop telling Pakistan to do more‚ questioning how much more suffering can Pakistan endure. He said terrorism and extremism have destroyed human lives‚ torn social fabric‚ and devastated the economy. Our economy‚ our lives‚ our ability to live in the shadow of our Sufi saints and our freedom-loving forefathers have been challenged. He forcefully said we and our soldiers have responded.Regretting the support extended to the dictators by the international community‚ the president said these dictators and their regimes are responsible for suffocating and throttling Pakistan‚ Pakistans institutions‚ and Pakistani democracy. He said Pakistans social fabric and its very character has been altered. Our condition today is a product of dictatorships. He however said democracy has brought about a major strategic shift in Pakistan. He said the present civilian government in Pakistan will be the first one in sixty-six year history to complete its full‚ five year term.Referring to the achievements of the incumbent set up in Pakistan‚ he said the parliament has passed unprecedented reforms. We have restored the consensus 1973 constitution. He said a truly independent election commission has been set up to ensure free‚ fair and transparent elections. Our media is free‚ uncensored and thriving. Our civil society is flourishing under the protection of democracy. He said he is committed to a permanent democratic future for Pakistan despite all the odds.Turning to relations with the regional countries‚ President Zardari said Pakistans strategic partnership with China is growing from strength to strength.Regarding Afghanistan‚ he said we have begun to engage and deepen our friendship with the entire range of the Afghan political spectrum. We believe that a sovereign‚ stable and secure Afghanistan is good for the Afghan people as well as for Pakistan. He said a brighter Afghan future will only be possible when the search for peace is Afghan-owned‚ Afghan-driven and Afghan-led. We respect and support the efforts of the government of Afghanistan for reconciliation and peace. Pakistan will support in every way possible‚ any process that reflects Afghan national consensus. He said our hearts and homes remain open to our Afghan brothers but it is imperative that the international community support the three million Afghan refugees in Pakistan in their quest to return home with dignity.About relations with India‚ President Zardari said we approach this relationship on mutual trust. The contacts between our leadership are expanding. He said our principled position on territorial disputes remains a bedrock of our foreign policy. We will continue to support the right of the people of Jammu & Kashmir to peacefully choose their destiny in accordance with the UN Security Councils long-standing resolutions on this matter. Kashmir remains a symbol of the failures‚ rather than strengths of the UN system. He said resolution of these issues can only be arrived in an environment of cooperation. By normalizing trade relations we want to create a regional South Asian narrative that will mutually benefit the countries of our region.Reiterating support for the rights of the Palestinian people and an independent Palestinian State‚ he said se also favor the admission of Palestine as a full member of the United Nations. He said we must pursue the peaceful settlement of international disputes and safe our current and future generations from the horrors of war.He said Pakistans election to the security council reflects its commitment to world peace. He said the UN represents our common aspirations for peace and development. However‚ it needs reform. The UN system must become more democratic and more accountable. Reform should be based on consensus and democratic principles.Emphasizing the need for Regional cooperation and connectivity‚ he said it will make us stakeholders in each others futures. He said we are hosting a quadrilateral summit next month and we have already signed Afghan Pakistan Transit Trade Agreement to fulfill our commitment to regional connectivity. The president reiterated that we seek trade rather than aid. By granting trade concession to Pakistan‚ the EU has sent a positive message. The trade concessions will help us revive the economy and fight terrorism.Referring to the threats posed by heroin‚ President Zardari said despite the presence of international forces in Afghanistan‚ the size of the heroin trade has increased by 3000% in the last decade. He said the terrorist activities within our region and indeed all over the world are funded and fueled by the unrestricted production and sale of illegal drugs. He said Pakistan has pursued an ambitious agenda to control this menace. We are coordinating with our neighbors and will hold a conference later this year to develop a unified approach to stamping out this drug trade. He called upon the UN and the countries engaged in the region to play their role for eradication of drug trade.President Zardari said collective efforts are required to face the enormous challenges such as poverty and climate change and to provide a better future to the people.

Whisky 'leftovers' to be turned into biofuel for cars Posted: In what is claimed to be a world first, the Tullibardine distillery in Perthshire has linked up with a spin-out company from Napier University in Edinburgh. They plan to use bacteria to feed on the leftovers from the whisky making process. This will produce butanol which can be used to fuel vehicles.More than 90% of the stuff that comes out of a whisky distillery is not whisky. It is leftovers like draff and pot ales - both produced in the early stages of the process. They are high in sugar and are currently used for things like fertiliser and cattle feed.It takes a cost to us and turns it into something that has social as well as commercial value”Napier Universitys Biofuel Research Centre (BfRC) has already shown that the right bacteria can feed on those by-products to produce butanol - a direct replacement for vehicle fuel. Now the spin-out company, Celtic Renewables, and independent malt whisky producer Tullibardine have signed a memorandum of understanding.Together they will apply the process to thousands of tonnes of the distillerys leftovers.Professor Martin Tangney, founder of Celtic Renewables, said: Our partnership with Tullibardine is an important step in the development of a business which combines two iconic Scottish industries - whisky and renewables. This project demonstrates that innovative use of existing technologies can utilise resources on our doorstep to benefit both the environment and the economy. The distillery spends £250,000 disposing of its by-products every yearDouglas Ross, managing director of Tullibardine, which spends £250,000 disposing of its by-products every year, said: We are delighted to be partnering Celtic Renewables in this innovative venture, the obvious benefits of which are environmental. It takes a cost to us and turns it into something that has social as well as commercial value. The project is being supported by a grant from the Scottish governments Zero Waste Scotland initiative.Celtic Renewables said it eventually aimed to build a processing plant in Scotland, with the hope of building an industry that could be worth £60m a year.
Boxing: Mormeck negotiates to fight Ola Afolabi Posted: This was revealed by the sources close to the fighter on Tuesday. The sources claimed that Mormeck, who was beaten by Ukrainian undisputed world heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko in Duesseldorf in March, is in negotiations to fight Britains Ola Afolabi in Paris and could also take part in another bout in Guadeloupe.Nothing has been definitively agreed upon yet, added the source.Afolabi drew with Germanys WBO cruiserweight champion Marco Huck in Erfurt, Germany in May.Mormeck, 40, won the WBA cruiserweight title in February 2002 after beating American Virgil Hill in a technical knockout in Marseille. He later defended the belt three times and then claimed the WBA and WBC cruiserweight titles by beating Wayne Braithwaite of Guyana in 2005.After losing his titles following a 10th-round knockout in a unification title bout against ONeil Bell of Jamaica in 2006, he won back the WBA and WBC belts by beating Bell in a rematch a year later. But a seventh-round knockout at the hands of Britains David Haye in November 2007 persuaded Mormeck to go on and try his luck at heavyweight level.Three wins, against American duo Vinnie Maddalone and Fres Oquendo as well as Timur Ibragimov of Uzbekistan, gave him the chance to take on Klitschko, who knocked him out in the fourth round.
Syria: Bomb hits school used by security forces Posted: Several bombs went off Tuesday inside a school in the Syrian capital that activists say was being used by regime forces as a security headquarters. Ambulances rushed to the area and an initial report on state media said seven people were wounded. An amateur video posted online showed smoke billowing from several spots in an area near a major road. The narrator said: A series of explosions shake the capital Damascus. The authenticity of the video could not be independently confirmed.Abu Hisham al-Shami, an activist based in Damascus, told The Associated Press via Skype that the Sons of Martyrs School had recently been turned into a regime security center. He said government forces use the school as a base to fire mortars at rebellious neighborhoods.State-run television quoted the director of the school, Mohammed Amin Othman, as saying that two bombs exploded inside the school, wounding seven people and causing minor damage. It said the bombs were planted by terrorists, the term the government uses for rebels.Othman said in a statement carried by the state-run SANA news agency that no students were at the school Monday as it will open next week. Although the school year started last week in Syria, Othman said the boarding school will open next week. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 20 people were wounded, some of them seriously, in several blasts at the school. It said most of the wounded were members of military. As Syrias civil war intensifies, rebels have increasingly targeted security sites and symbols of regime power. In July, a bombing killed four senior security officials including the defense minister and President Bashar Assads brother-in-law.Other massive bombings have targeted the Damascus headquarters of security agencies, killing scores of people this year.A worker outside the school, who refused to be identified, said two diesel tankers exploded inside the school compound, wounding at least four people, one of them seriously. He added that the wounded were rushed to nearby hospitals. He added that a thick plume of smoke rose over the area and fire reached the fifth story of the building. A nearby theater for the schools students was partially damaged and the blast toppled its ceiling.Syrias uprising began in March 2011 and has since become a civil war. Activists estimate some 30,000 people have been killed. The Observatory and the Local Coordination Committees reported violence throughout the country including clashes between troops and rebels near the southern town of Quneitra on the edge of the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. Both groups said at least seven people were killed in the fighting.Earlier in the day, the Israeli military said several mortars fired by Syrian government troops targeting rebels hit the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, but no one was hurt in the shelling. The incident marks the second time Syrian mortars have landed on the border area since Syrias crisis erupted 18 months ago. In July, mortar shells fell about one kilometer (half a mile) from the Golan boundary. The Israeli-annexed Golan Heights was captured from Syria in 1967.
