Judges ask Naek to revise draft of Swiss letter

ISLAMABAD, Sept 25: On the face of it, Law Minister Farooq H. Naek presented before the Supreme Court on Tuesday the draft of a letter along with an authorisation the government intends to send to the Swiss authorities to implement the NRO verdict. But what transpired when the judges decided to retire to their chambers for a thorough perusal of the draft instead of in the open court encouraged rumour mills to churn out all kinds of speculations and assumptions...

NEW YORK, Sept 25: Pakistan moved the United Nations on Tuesday to immediately address the alarming situation created by an anti-Islam video and “bridge the widening rift to enable the comity of nations to be one again”.

President Asif Ali Zardari, who announced this step in his address to the 67th UN General Assembly began his speech with a strong condemnation of the blasphemous video and urged the international community not to remain silent to such provocations...

Interim govt not before March: Kaira

LAHORE, Sept 25: Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira has ruled out formation of a caretaker set-up this year, saying the PPP government’s term will end on March 18 next year and the interim government will be installed afterwards to hold general elections within 60 days.

“Formation of interim government in November or December this year is not possible,” he said while talking to reporters at the residence of the Leader of Opposition in Punjab Assembly, Raja Riaz, here on Tuesday...

Humanity should reject hate video, says Obama

NEW YORK, Sept 25: US President Barack Obama urged the entire humanity on Tuesday to reject a disgusting video which has sparked outrage throughout the Muslim world but said that nothing justified “the death and destruction” witnessed in Pakistan last week.

Mr Obama, who is criticised at home for favouring the Muslims and in the Islamic world for not arresting the producer of the offensive video, emphasised the need for a balance between the two positions...

CEC defends de-notification of lawmakers

ISLAMABAD, Sept 25: Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retd) Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim has defended ECP’s decision to de-notify 11 lawmakers disqualified recently by the Supreme Court for holding dual nationality, saying the commission was discharging its duties in line with the powers given to it by the Constitution.

In a rejoinder to a letter received from Attorney General Irfan Qadir on Monday, the CEC said that being a retired judge of the Supreme Court he was well aware of the relevant provisions of the Constitution...

Justice Rehman favourite to get SC post

ISLAMABAD, Sept 25: A change in the leadership of Islamabad High Court is likely as the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry will consider on Thursday the name of incumbent IHC Chief Justice Iqbal Hameedur Rehman for his elevation to the Supreme Court and that of Justice Mohammad Anwar Khan Kasi as the next chief justice of the high court.

Sources in the law ministry told Dawn that being the most senior judge Justice Kasi would be the next chief justice of IHC, but his appointment was subject to approval by the JCP which would meet on Thursday...

Prophet’s Mosque being expanded

RIYADH, Sept 25: Saudi King Abdullah on Tuesday launched a massive expansion project of the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah. The king, who has just returned to the kingdom after a vacation in Morocco, laid the foundation stone for the expansion of the mosque.

This major expansion of the mosque was ordered by the king earlier this year. The project envisages plans to accommodate more than 800,000 worshippers, according to an official Saudi statement...

Counting conducted on court’s orders: Hundreds of imported sheep found missing

KARACHI, Sept 25: More than 1,400 imported Australian sheep were found missing during a counting exercise conducted on the orders of the Sindh High Court on Tuesday at two farms owned by P.K. Livestock and Meat Company in Razzakabad area of Malir.
