Reconciliation, cross-border attacks discussed in Pak-Afghan-UK summit Posted: Afghanistan and Pakistan have agreed to take steps for removal of misunderstandings and to work together for peace and stability in the region. On the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari, Afghan President Hamid Karzai and British Prime Minister David Cameron, led their respective delegations for a trilateral summit in New York on Wednesday. This was the second trilateral in three days after another such meeting was attended by Pakistan, Afghanistan and US a couple of days ago again on the sidelines of UNGA.President Zardari raised concerns that Taliban, having fled from Pakistani tribal areas after security forces mounted operation against them, had taken refuge in Afghan province of Kunar and Nuristan. He cited the example of 17 Pakistani soldiers, who lost their lives when their throats were cut by Taliban who had crossed over from Afghanistan into Pakistani territory, and urged President Karzai to take steps against incidents of organized terrorism in Pakistan from Afghan territory. The Pakistani president also highlighted that narcotics trade money was being used for terrorist attacks in Pakistan. He stressed that Pakistan was committed to peace and stability in the region and was ready to undertake all efforts that could lead towards the goal of an Afghan-led reconciliation process.Afghan President Karzai thanked President Zardari for the show of support for Afghan peace. He, however, said that Pakistan also needed to make its borders more secure. He also raised the issue of Haqqani network who were undertaking terrorist attacks in Afghanistan with frequency and their activities had remained unchecked.President Zardari assured his Afghan counterpart that Pakistan had no sympathy for any group as it had been the biggest victim of terrorism. Both leaders agreed that the tension between both countries was counter-productive for peace and stability. They agreed to enhance security and border-cooperation mechanism to combat the threat of terrorism. It may be mentioned here that reconciliation in Afghanistan has become the single most important agenda for United States and international community on the sidelines for United Nations General Assembly. Following the US, other important partners of Afghanistan and Pakistan have become active to not only find possible options to make reconciliation a success but also to troubleshoot the recent friction between Pakistan and Afghanistan. In the said trilateral involving Afghanistan, Pakistan and UK, each country reaffirmed its commitment to continue to work for the goals of regional peace, stability and development and for the elimination of the scourge of terrorism from the region. This was the second round of this trilateral summit and the leaders agreed that fight against terrorism was the shared interest.President Zardari, while highlighting the importance of durable peace and stability in Afghanistan, underscored the need for an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace process in Afghanistan. He said that Pakistan supports an intra-Afghan dialogue, and all misconception in this regard were unfounded. Education, economic opportunities for the people of affected areas, and socio-economic development were effective tools to transform the environment, he stressedHe termed Afghan governments accusations against Pakistan as unfair, and stressed that it should not forgot the sacrifices given by Pakistan for the last 30 years. Both leaders agreed to take steps on either side for stopping insurgents from crossing over and for stopping drug-trafficking from Afghanistan. President Asif Ali Zardari and President Karzai appreciated the constructive role being played by the United Kingdom to bring both countries together.President Karzai said that his country needed maximum political and economic support of neighbours as well as the international community to move towards a peaceful and stable region. Prime Minister Cameron reiterated commitment of Britain to support Afghanistan and Pakistan in working out solutions for peace and stability in the region and in their quest for socio-economic development of their people.- Contributed by Awais Saleem, Dunya News correspondent in New York

Arab League calls for criminalization of blasphemy Posted: The head of the Arab League called Wednesday for the international community to criminalize blasphemy, warning that insults to religion pose a serious threat to global peace and security. The comments put him squarely at odds with the United States and many of its western allies, which are resolutely opposed to restrictions on freedom of expression.Nabil Elaraby told the U.N. Security Council that if the west has criminalized acts that result in bodily harm, it must also criminalize acts that insult or cause offense to religions. He condemned the violence that erupted throughout the Muslim world in response to an anti-Islam film produced in the United States. But, he said that unless blasphemy laws are enacted and enforced, similar incidents could happen again. While we fully reject such actions that are not justifiable in any way, we would like to ring the warning bell, Elaraby said. We are warning that offending religions, faiths and symbols is indeed a matter that threatens in international peace and security now.If the international community has criminalized bodily harm, it must just as well criminalize psychological and spiritual harm, he said. The League of Arab States calls for the development of an international legal framework which is binding ... in order to confront insulting religions and ensuring that religious faith and its symbols are respected.Elaraby maintained that the 21-member Arab League valued the freedom of speech but stressed that we dont see any relation between freedom of expression which aims at enriching culture and building civilization of the one hand and activities that merely offend and insult the beliefs, culture and civilization of others.Individual members of the Arab League, including Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi, have issued similar calls.Elaraby spoke a special session of the Security Council called to discuss developments in the Middle East, including the crisis in Syria and the stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace process.U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton also addressed the meeting but did not specifically discuss Elarabys comments. On Tuesday, though, President Barack Obama gave a powerful defense of free speech rights as he spoke to the U.N. General Assembly. He strongly defended the U.S. Constitutions guarantee of the freedom of expression, even views that we profoundly disagree with.Clinton and other foreign ministers at the meeting did take the opportunity to complain that the U.N. Security Council has been unable to unify behind a plan to end the violence in Syria and promote a political transition. Clinton said the council was paralyzed. French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said it was shocking that the council had been unable to act.China and Russia have blocked Security Council action on Syria.Earlier Wednesday, Clinton said western and northern African nations need to tighten security on their borders to combat the increased movement of extremists, weapons and drugs. She called the Sahel region is a powder keg of hunger, displacement and insecurity, and said the world cant ignore the situation.

United beat Newcastle, holders Liverpool advance Posted: Manchester United moved into the League Cup fourth round with a 2-1 win over Newcastle, while holders Liverpool fought back to seal a 2-1 victory at West Bromwich Albion on Wednesday.United, looking to win the League Cup for the fifth time, made a host of changes from the side that won at Liverpool on Sunday. However, they still fielded a strong side including Wayne Rooney, back from a month out with a thigh injury, and Darren Fletcher, who was starting for the first time in 10 months after recovering from a bowel condition.Uniteds Anderson broke the deadlock in the 44th minute when the Brazilian midfielder drove his shot past Rob Elliot.Tom Cleverley put United further ahead in the 58th minute as the England midfielder curled home his first goal for United.Demba Cisse came off the bench to reduce the deficit with a header four minutes later, but Sir Alex Fergusons side survived a late barrage of Newcastle pressure to go through.Im very pleased, Ferguson said. Newcastle probably had a stronger team than us physically but we played some fantastic football and I think we deserved to win.Rooney added: I feel good, obviously its always difficult in your first game back after a few weeks but its great to get the minutes under my belt and hopefully that can benefit me.At the Hawthorns, Brendan Rodgers Liverpool made a terrible start when Australian goalkeeper Brad Jones spilled a free-kick and Gabriel Tamas pounced to score from close range in the third minute. But Turkey midfielder Nuri Sahin equalised in the 17th minute with his first Liverpool goal, a long-range effort that Albion goalkeeper Ben Foster should have saved. And Sahin ensured Liverpool, who made 11 changes from the United defeat, stole the victory when the on-loan Real Madrid star turned in Oussama Assaidis cross in the 82nd minute. It was an outstanding performance, Rodgers said. Im not surprised as our performance level has been good all season. Its great to see the kids playing with confidence. We fully deserved the win.Olivier Giroud finally ended his long wait to score his first Arsenal goal as the Gunners crushed League One strugglers Coventry 6-1 at the Emirates Stadium.France striker Giroud, who had gone six games without a goal for his new club, got on the scoresheet when he converted a Francis Coquelin pass in the 39th minute. However, the former Montpellier star wasted a chance to double his Gunners tally when his second half penalty was saved by Joe Murphy after Andrey Arshavin was fouled by Reece Brown. But Arsenal remained firmly in control and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain increased their lead after 57 minutes.Russian winger Arshavin fired home six minutes later and Theo Walcott added the fourth in the 74th minute.Callum Ball got one back for Coventry in the 78th minute, but Ignasi Miquel, Arsenals young Spanish defender, responded with his first goal for the club two minutes later and Walcott netted his second in stoppage-time.Arsenals north London rivals Tottenham brushed aside League One side Carlisle with a 3-0 victory at Brunton Park.Andre Villas-Boas made a host of changes to the Spurs side that beat QPR on Sunday, but still couldnt find a place for France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, with Carlo Cudicini starting in goal. That surprise decision didnt unsettle Villas-Boass side, who took the lead in the 37th minute when defender Jan Vertonghen scored his first Spurs goal.Andros Townsend doubled Tottenhams lead with a fine solo effort in the 53rd minute and Gylfi Sigurdsson completed the romp with his first goal for the club just before full-time.Norwich paid tribute to John Bond, the clubs second longest serving manager who passed away aged 79 on Wednesday, with a 1-0 win over League One side Doncaster at Carrow Road.Reading came from behind to clinch a dramatic 3-2 win over QPR at Loftus Road.

Narine is our trump card, says Sammy Posted: West Indian captain Darren Sammy admitted off-spinner Sunil Narine will be his trump card to exploit Englands weakness against slow bowlers in the Super Eights match here on Thursday.England, defending the World Twenty20 title they won in the Caribbean two years ago, crashed to their heaviest T20 defeat of 90 runs in their first round match against India, with off-spinner Harbhajan Singh grabbing 4-12.And that prompted Sammy to raise more hopes with Narine.Sunil is our trump card, hes done well for us in that format, hopefully he could have a big impact on the English batting line-up, said Sammy of the 24-year-old spinner who has made a big impact at Twenty20 level.Besides Narine, West Indies have the option of bringing in leg-spinner Samuel Badree to add to the guile of Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels, who can also bowl handy spin.Well definitely look to bowl spin against them, but we have quality seam bowlers upfront also. We have Badree who is another spinner in the line-up so hopefully we will bowl well against England and have a good game, said Sammy. The top eight teams compete in the Super Eights round beginning with the group one clashes between hosts Sri Lanka and New Zealand, followed by England and the West Indies.Pakistan play South Africa while India meet Australia in group two in Colombo on Friday. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the semi-final with the final on October 7.Sammy said the West Indies -- who have not won a major event since winning the ICC Champions trophy in 2004 -- have the self-belief to finally win a trophy. The biggest strength for us is the belief in the dressing room that we could win this tournament and we left home thinking that. We have quality in the dressing room, its up to us to go out and display that quality out there, said Sammy.England captain Stuart Broad admitted the West Indies team posed a challenge.Weve played against the West Indies this summer (in England), we know they are a dangerous side and they had success in the Twenty20 format with some players who have done well but we are focused for the match, said Broad. Its important that you learn from the mistakes you make, so with that you need to talk about them, but you dont need to dwell on them. We have guys who have played spin really well at times so we just build on that.
