ISLAMABAD, Oct 3: In an unprecedented exchange between Russia and Pakistan, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov jetted into Islamabad on Wednesday to reassure Pakistani leader-ship that President Putin remained committed to resetting ties despite cancellation of his visit, while Army Chief Gen Ashfaq Pervez Kiani flew to Russia for consolidating progress in defence cooperation.

Mr Lavrov arrived in the evening on a two-day visit during which he is scheduled to meet his counterpart Hina Rabbani Khar and Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf. It was not clear till Wednesday night if the visiting foreign minister would get an audience with President Asif Ali Zardari...

KSE hits record high

KARACHI: The Karachi Stock Exchange achieved two new milestones on Wednesday as it hit a new all-time high of 15,747.64 points and ended at its highest-ever level of 15,712.21 points, buoyed by expectations of a cut in the State Bank’s key policy rate due to be announced on Friday.

Punjab govt, governor in clash over ex-official

LAHORE, Oct 3: The ‘mysterious’ disappearance of former Ogra chief Tauqir Sadiq has brought the Punjab government and the Governor’s House on the verge of a clash following the former’s allegation that he is hiding in the latter.

The Supreme Court ordered the National Accountability Bureau on Tuesday to immediately arrest Mr Sadiq. It also remarked that the Punjab police chief (Haji Habibur Rehman) should be arrested if he had given shelter to the accused. The NAB’s Deputy Prosecutor General, Fauzi Kazmi, told the court that Mr Sadiq might be somewhere in Lahore under the protection of Punjab police...

200,000 tons of sugar to be exported: ECC approves import of LNG

ISLAMABAD, Oct 3: The government on Wednesday allowed export of 200,000 tons of sugar and approved import of one billion cubic feet per day (1bcfd) of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in three phases through competitive bidding. The first gas delivery is expected after 12 months.

NAB’s rental power probe does not bode well for PM

ISLAMABAD, Oct 3: With the National Accountability Bureau having started the process of fixing criminal charges in the Rental Power Projects case, there is a possibility of Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf facing some serious charges.

“In the NAB Ordinance only incumbent president and governors are exempted from NAB’s action but not the sitting prime minister and, therefore, Prime Minister Ashraf can face criminal liabilities,” NAB’s spokesman Zafar Iqbal said...
