NATO in an emergency meeting Wednesday backed Turkey and called on Syria to respect international law after a Syrian shell hit a border town, killing five Turkish nationals and sparking retaliatory strikes. The Alliance continues to stand by Turkey and demands the immediate cessation of such aggressive acts against an Ally and urges the Syrian regime to end flagrant violations of international law, a NATO statement said after the meeting was called at member Ankaras request. The alliance said Syrias recent aggressive acts at NATOs southeastern border were a flagrant breach of international law and a clear and present danger to an ally. The most recent shelling... which caused the death of five Turkish citizens and injured many, constitutes a cause of greatest concern and is strongly condemned by all Allies, it added.Earlier, NATO head Anders Fogh Rasmussen had spoken to Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmed Davutoglu to express his strong condemnation of the incident in Akcakale town, a spokeswoman said.Turkey shelled Syria in retaliation for what it termed an attack too far.Our armed forces in the border region immediately retaliated against this heinous attack... by shelling targets spotted by radar, Turkeys prime ministers office said in a statement earlier.Turkey will never leave unanswered such provocations by the Syrian regime targeting our national security, in line with engagement rules and international law.The incident is the most serious between the two neighbours since June when Syria shot down a Turkish fighter plane with the loss of its two-man crew and Ankara took the matter to NATO.

Syria must respect neighbours' territory: UN chief

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged Damascus to respect the territorial sovereignty of its neighbors after Syrian shelling killed five Turks and sparked a retaliatory attack Wednesday. The victims, among them a mother and her three children, were the first Turkish nationals killed by cross-border fire in the Syrian conflict.Ban expressed his deepest concern at the shells fired from Tall al-Abyad in Syria that smashed into buildings in Akcakale, the second time that fire from Syria killed people inside Turkey since the uprising against the regime in Damascus erupted in March 2011.The secretary general has repeatedly warned that the ongoing militarization of the conflict in Syria is leading to tragic results for the Syrian people, Bans spokesman Martin Nesirky said in a statement.Todays incidents... again demonstrated how Syrias conflict is threatening not only the security of the Syrian people but increasingly causing harm to its neighbors.Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu called Ban, the UNs Syria peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi and NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen over the incident, his office said. The transatlantic military alliance will hold a meeting urgently, according to a Turkish statement.Ban calls on the Syria government to respect fully the territorial integrity of its neighbors as well as to end the violence against the Syrian people, his spokesman said.He calls on all parties to reduce tensions and to forge a path toward a peaceful resolution of the Syria crisis.

Turkey shells Syria in retaliation for deadly attacks

Turkey shelled Syria in retaliation for deadly cross-border fire Wednesday as NATO convened an emergency meeting on the attack that threatened to inflame tensions in the volatile region.Earlier on Wednesday Syrian shells crashed into a Turkish border town, killing five people, the first time Turkeys citizens were killed by cross-border fire from its war-torn neighbour. An outraged Ankara said the attack went too far, and it swiftly retaliated. Our armed forces in the border region immediately retaliated against this heinous attack... by shelling targets spotted by radar, Turkeys prime ministers office said in a statement.Turkey will never leave unanswered such provocations by the Syrian regime targeting our national security, in line with engagement rules and international law.The Syrian shelling was condemned by the United States, which said it was outraged by the attack, while UN chief Ban Ki-moon told Damascus to respect its neighbours sovereignty. The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, of which Turkey is a member, expressed its strong condemnation of the Syrian shelling, said a spokeswoman. It has been decided that the NATO council will meet urgently, Turkeys prime ministers office said.Diplomatic sources in Brussels said the alliance would meet on Wednesday evening.Relations between Syria and Turkey have steadily deteriorated since the start of the uprising against Syrian President Bashar al-Assads regime first broke out in March 2011.The Syrian shells crashed into the Turkish border town of Akcakale, which has been hit by Syrian fire several times recently and where schools have been shut over the past two weeks because of the violence. The shells killed five Turkish nationals, including a mother and her three children.Three or four Syrian shells fell inside Turkey at around 4:30 pm local time ... and one of them hit a house. As a result, we unfortunately lost our five citizens, the regional governor Celalettin Guvenc told Anatolia.Ten others were wounded by the Syrian shells and two of them were in critical condition, he said. The last incident went too far, Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc was quoted as saying by Anatolia news agency.NATO treaty articles bring about certain liabilities when one of its members is attacked. We will not be blinded by rage, but we will protect our rights to the end in the face of an attack on our soil killing our people, he warned.Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu called UN chief Ban Ki-moon, NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen and the UNs Syria peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi over the incident, his office said.Ban encouraged Davutoglu to keep open all channels of communication with the Syrian authorities with a view to lessening any tension that could build up as a result of the incident, spokesman Martin Nesirky said. The UN chief said that the incident demonstrated how Syrias conflict is threatening not only the security of the Syrian people but increasingly causing harm to its neighbors. In Washington, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said that we are outraged that the Syrians have been shooting across the border. We are very regretful about the loss of life on the Turkish side. She added it was a very, very dangerous situation, and said she would be discussing with her Turkish counterpart what the best way forward would be.Wednesdays attack marked the second time that fire from Syria killed people inside Turkey. In April, two Syrian nationals were killed on Turkish soil by stray bullets fired from the Syrian side.Turkish officials have advised residents to stay away from the volatile border with Syria, where more than 100 schools have remained closed in the region over the past two weeks because of the violence.A week ago, the Turkish army deployed artillery and anti-aircraft missiles along the border in the region.Since late July, Syrian rebels have seized control of at least three key border crossings with Turkey and others on the eastern border with Iraq.Turkey, once a strong ally of Syria, broke with Damascus after the regime began cracking down on dissent, in a conflict which monitoring groups say has claimed more than 31,000 lives since March 2011.Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has accussed Syria of becoming a terrorist state carrying out massacres of its own people.Turkish-Syrian ties have further deterioated after Syria shot down a Turkish jet fighter in June, prompting Ankara to shutter its 900-kilometre (560-mile) border with tanks and anti-aircraft missiles. After that incident, Erdogan signaled that Turkish military rules of engagement toward Syria changed, saying any Syrian military officer approaching Turkey border and deemed a threat would be treated as a military target.

Oil drops on signs of slower global growth

Posted:

Oil prices plunged Wednesday on more evidence of slower growth in Asia and concerns about Europes ongoing financial crisis.Benchmark oil fell $3.43, or 3.7 percent, to $88.46 per barrel in afternoon trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Brent crude, which is used to price international varieties of oil, fell $2.59, or 2.3 percent, to $108.98 a barrel in London.Chinas services sector slowed in September. Analysts say the index was 53.7 compared with 56.3 in August. It was released just days after a survey indicated that the countrys manufacturing continues to slow.China is the worlds second largest economy and a huge importer of commodities like oil. Slower growth in that country could cut demand for oil.And its not only China. After years of rapid growth, Asias developing economies now face much more modest prospects, the Asian Development Bank said Wednesday in a report that slashes growth forecasts for this year and next. The ADB said growth in developing Asia, which includes giant emerging economies such as India, China and Indonesia, will slow to 6.1 percent this year from 7.2 percent last year and only partly rebound to 6.7 percent in 2013. It had previously forecast growth of 6.9 percent for 2012 and 7.3 percent for 2013.The disappointing reports were overshadowing signs of improvement in U.S. service companies, which employ nearly 90 percent of the work force. The Institute for Supply Management says its index rose in September at the fastest pace since March.Meanwhile, the U.S. government says crude inventories fell slightly last week but remain 8.4 percent above year-ago levels. Gasoline supplies rose.

Thats more than economists expected, but still down from Augusts total of 189,000.The Institute for Supply Management said its index of service companies rose to 55.1 in September, the highest level since March. Economists expected that it would drop to 53.4.The euro fell to $1.2899 in late trading Wednesday from $1.2917 late Tuesday. The British pound fell to $1.6072 from $1.6140.The dollar rose to 78.52 Japanese yen from 78.13 yen, to 0.9390 Swiss franc from 0.9364 Swiss franc and to 98.82 Canadian cents from 98.42 Canadian cents. The dollar also rose against the Australian dollar, the New Zealand dollar, the Norwegian krone and the Honk Kong dollar.

Arsenal beat Olympiakos 3-1 in Champions League

Arsenal maintained its perfect start to the Champions League on Wednesday, with Gervinho, Lukas Podolski and Aaron Ramsey scoring in a 3-1 victory over Olympiakos.Gervinhos 43rd minute-opener was quickly canceled out as Kostas Mitroglou headed the Greek champions level before halftime, but Arsenal was back in control after the break to ensure it stayed top of Group B.Gervinho turned provider in the 56th, picking out Podolski in the penalty area and the Germans shot went straight through the legs of goalkeeper Balazs Megyeri into the net.Ramsey made sure of the victory in stoppage time, dinking the ball over Megyeri as Arsenal made a lightning attack.Arsenal beat Montpellier 2-1 in the Group B opener two weeks ago, when Olympiakos lost to Schalke. The Gunners were looking for an immediate response to its first loss of the season on Saturday at the hands of Chelsea and they got it.With manager Arsene Wenger again looking on from the stands as he serves a touchline ban from UEFA, Arsenal pressed with verve and conviction inspired by Cazorla from the start, and it was the Spanish midfielder who came close to giving Arsenal an early lead. His free kick was destined for the top of the net until Megyeri produced a fingertip save.Megyeris opposite number Vito Mannone also had to be alert to block a low strike from Mitroglou from the edge of the area.An edginess has returned to Arsenals defense after a solid start to the season, and looked like being exploited again.A cross from Giannis Maniatis was allowed to find its way into the penalty area and Arsenal was only rescued by Paulo Machados poor finishing, as he scuffed a shot over the bar from close range with the goal at his mercy. But Olympiakos defense was breached first as Gibbs and Lukas Podolski combined down the left flank and the ball reached the edge of the penalty area where Gervinho seized it and struck a low shot into the net.The visitors immediately pushed for the equalizer, but Machado was too rushed as he shot from distance and Mannone easily collected the ball. They succeeded a minute later, though. Lenadro Greco sent a precise cross from the right flank into the penalty area where Mitroglou rose between the center backs to plant a header into the net.Arsenals first chance to go back in front in the second half was squandered when Cazorla missed the target after Gervinho did the hard work, cutting the ball back to his unmarked teammate in front of goal. But after Gervinhos interplay with Cazorla on the right, Podolski put Arsenal in front, with a shot through the legs of Megyeri, which the goalkeeper also helped to divert into the net.Mannone started the move that led to the third, with a long throw flicked on by Olivier Giroud to fellow substitute Ramsey. The midfielder went past captain Giannis Maniatis and cooly lifted the ball over the onrushing Megyeri.

AC Milan beat Zenit 3-2 in Champions League

Posted:

A late own goal by Slovak defender Tomas Hubocan spoiled Zenit St. Petersburgs comeback and handed AC Milan a 3-2 win over the Russian club in an action-packed Champions League match on Wednesday.Zenit rallied from a two-goal deficit to level the match but fell to its second group defeat that ended a 16-match home unbeaten streak in Europe. This is an important victory. It is not easy to win against Zenit on their ground. We came under tough pressure, but our goalkeeper played a great match, said Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri, referring to the six on-target shots kept out by Christian Abbiati.Allegri opted for an attacking side, with Riccardo Montolivo and Nigel De Jong in midfield behind Urby Emanuelson. Kevin-Prince Boateng, Stephan El Shaarawy and Bojan Krcic.Milan went ahead when a powerful free kick by Emanuelson in the 12th minute ricocheted off Roman Shirokov, leaving goalkeeper Vyacheslav Malafeyev unable to react in time.Three minutes later, Milan striker El Shaarawy weaved through the Zenit defense in a burst of speed and drove the ball past Malafeyev.Zenit hit back, however, assailing Milan with a wave of dangerous surges and shots on goal that forced Abbiati into a series of saves.Brazilian forward Hulk started the fight-back when he powered a low drive past Abbati at the end of the first half. The goal was Zenits first in the Champions League this season, having gone down 3-0 to Malaga two weeks earlier.Roman Shirokov equalized with a header from a corner by Hulk four minutes after the break.Allegri tried to inject some urgency into his sides attack by substituting Spanish forward Krcic, who failed to make an impact in his 52 minutes on the field, for Giampaolo Pazzini.Still, it was Boatengs diving header a couple of minutes later that showed Milans renewed threat. An energetic Zenit kept Milan fighting hard to keep the score level, but the Italian side finally scored when Hubocan knocked the ball into his own net with Pazzini looming.Seven minutes before time, Abbiati stopped what look like a certain goal from a scorching strike by Aleksandr Anyukov. This is a very sad night for me. All the work we did before the match was of no help, said Zenit coach Luciano Spalletti.Once again, we started the game very poorly. As we did against Malaga, we let in two goals in the first 15 minutes.
