Police told to ensure doctors’ safety

QUETTA, Oct 9: Expressing concern over lawlessness and killings in Balochistan, the Supreme Court directed police on Tuesday to provide security to doctors.

The order was issued by a three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, Justice Jawwad S. Khawaja and Justice Khilji Arif Hussain. The bench had taken up a petition on the law and order situation and human rights violations in the province at the Quetta registry of Supreme Court...

ISLAMABAD, Oct 9: The hitherto perceived face-off between the judiciary and the executive over the language of the draft of a letter to be sent to the Swiss authorities to reopen graft cases against President Asif Ali Zardari turned into a reality on Tuesday.

A day ahead of the Supreme Court hearing on the NRO implementation case, the government moved a petition seeking review of the Sept 18 order in which the court had spelt out four-pronged measures that also suggested monitoring by the court of final disposition of the matter. Dual nationality: Legislators bound to file declaration: EC

ISLAMABAD, Oct 9: Days after both houses of parliament refused to obtain declarations from their members that they were not holding dual nationality, the Election Commission has sought the same declarations from members of the Senate and national and provincial assemblies.

Letters have been sent to all lawmakers to submit their declarations to the commission within 30 days, making it clear that they would be assumed to be possessing dual nationality if they failed to comply with the direction within the stipulated period...

Anti-pneumonia drive launched

ISLAMABAD, Oct 9: Pakistan on Tuesday launched a drive to vaccinate 5.5 million children against pneumococcal disease to fight pneumonia, which kills tens of thousands of youngsters in the country every year.

Pakistan is the first country in South Asia to launch a campaign against the disease, according to UN children’s agency Unicef, which is working with the government on the project...
