Thorpe inspires Rooney to dream of WC glory

Posted:

Wayne Rooney hopes he is ready to finally perform at his best for England after being inspired by the words of Olympic swimming legend Ian Thorpe. The Manchester United forward is back in the England squad for Fridays World Cup qualifier against San Marino after recovering from a gashed thigh he suffered playing for his club in August. The Wembley match also marks his first international since an uninspiring Euro 2012, for which he was initially suspended.A widely-reported pre-tournament holiday Las Vegas, while he was injured, did not go down well either. He was later accused by former England manager Fabio Capello of only playing his best football for United, but while accepting the nature of the criticism he has received for his international displays, Rooney insisted his lack of success has not been for want of effort.Speaking at the Football Associations new St Georges Park National Football Centre, Rooney claimed he did not see the Capello comments, but admitted: I can understand and see where people are coming from. But I wasnt in Vegas going out every night drinking and partying. Obviously I went out one night and that was seen.I couldnt train anyway. That is why I had the extra time off. I had to have something done to my toe. It was just a way to relax before I came into training but obviously I can understand.Id have liked to have played better for England. For whatever reasons it hasnt happened but I can hold my head up high and say Ive always worked hard, given everything and Ill continue to do that. Hopefully it will come off for us one day.I am a confident person. Looking back at games and tournaments, and I know I can do better. Its great to play for your country, a great honour, I think I havent played at my best but being honest as a team we can do better.I am not going to win a tournament on my own. We need the whole team. There have been times when we can do better as a team, and times where we have been unlucky. If one of those goes the other way you never know what will happen. The training centre features photos of international legends such as Bobby Moore and the rest of Englands 1966 winning World Cup side.It is also adorned with inspirational quotes such as Australian swimmer Thorpes, which reads: Losing is not coming second. Its getting out of the water knowing you could have done better.I think the place is inspirational, Rooney said. Walking round you see all the history of England and pictures up and the Ian Thorpe quote stuck in my mind - I think its quite good. I always try to give everything and leave everything on the pitch. Sometimes it happens where you dont play well but you have tried.I always feel like I have given everything, whether I have played well or badly. I always try to come off exhausted.Rooney, 26, also acknowledges he is now one of the senior England players having scored 29 goals in 76 appearances. He could even lead out the side if Chelseas Frank Lampard does not recover from a knock while regular captain Steven Gerrard is suspended. He added: I havent heard anything. Its down to the manager. He hasnt said anything. If I do it will be a great honour to captain my country at Wembley, something I will be really proud of.I hope I can show my leadership qualities as a senior player. Especially with a lot of young players in the squad. I always try to speak to them and offer advice. I always remember Alex Ferguson says what a big help Eric Cantona was to all those younger players at United.Hopefully I can bring the best out of them and they can bring the best out of me as well.

US condemns attack on Malala Yusufzai

Posted:

While responding to a question on the attack - which has left Malala fighting for her life - during a briefing Tuesday, the spokesperson of the US State Department, Victoria Nuland, termed the attack a barbaric and cowardly act. Malala Yusufzai was shot in the head during an attack in Swat earlier in the day.We strongly condemn the shooting of Malala. Directing violence at children is barbaric, it’s cowardly, and our hearts go out to her and the others who were wounded as well as their families, she said while talking about National Peace Award winner, Malala Yousufzai. Taliban have claimed responsibility for the attack because of her stance against militancy. In a separate question regarding Pakistan’s Interior Minister, Rehman Maliks recent visit to Washington, she said that his meeting with Secretary Clinton was just for a couple of minutes to say hello. The minister, she said, was in the building for another meeting and there was nothing special that was dicsuseed in his interaction with Secretary Clinton. My understanding is that Interior Minister Malik was here to participate in the U.S.-Pakistan Law Enforcement and Counterterrorism Working Group, which is one of the working groups we have under our broader bilateral relationship. In the context of that, he had a chance to have a hello with the Secretary and a couple-minute conversation, but it wasn’t an extended bilateral meeting. So I don’t have any particular readout for you, she explained. When asked to confirm Rehman Maliks assertion that he raised Pakistans concern over use of drone strikes and how the US responsed to it, she declined to answer. I can’t confirm that one way or the other, but you know that I don’t talk about that particular subject from this podium, she said in a firm tone. The US officials are generally reluctant to talk about drones on-the-record as a matter of policy.- Contributed by Awais Saleem, Dunya News correspondent in Washington, DC

Bill Gates prefers charity to US presidency

Posted:

I wouldnt ever choose to run for political office, said Gates at the annual Abu Dhabi Media Summit held in the Emirati capital.By running the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation I dont have to raise political campaigns, I dont have to get elected ... Im not term limited to eight years, said the US billionaire, but added that he would give advice to the president just as he gave to Microsoft.Right now, I am spending more of my time and effort to end polio than any other cause. Its the top priority of our foundation, he said in his opening speech at the media gathering. We can end polio. And when we do, it will rejuvenate the whole field of global health, he said, adding that the dreaded disease has dropped more than 99 percent over the last 20 years.Gates said the foundation he co-chairs has pledged to spend $10 billion in this decade to pay for research and development and delivery of vaccines to the poorest children in the world. He said the Gulf region could play a key role in fighting poverty and diseases. One of the things that makes this region so special is the way tradition and change exist side by side, said Gates. You combine rising prosperity and a commitment to education with a deep custom of charity, in keeping with the teachings of Islam. On Monday, his foundation announced a new partnership with the Islamic Development Bank to provide financing for agriculture and malaria, and to work together to fight polio. Many imams are strong advocates for vaccination. After all, people making hajj (the annual Muslim pilgrimage) must be vaccinated against multiple diseases, including polio, Gates said. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation funds health and anti-poverty projects in developing countries, including malaria research and vaccination programmes, and works with the poor in the United States.Through the foundation, built on his software fortune, Gates has committed more than $2.5 billion in HIV grants to organisations around the world. It has also committed more than $1.4 billion to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, the foundation said in a report in July. The three-day 2012 Abu Dhabi Media Summit brings together over 400 leaders from across the global media industry.

Screen addiction can hamper childrens growth

Posted:

Psychologist Dr Aric Sigman says children of all ages are watching more screen media than ever, and starting earlier. The average 10-year-old has access to five different screens at home, he says. And some are becoming addicted to them or depressed as a result, he warns.Writing in the Archives of Disease in Childhood, Dr Sigman says a child born today will have spent a full year glued to screens by the time they reach the age of seven. He adds: In addition to the main family television, for example, many very young children have their own bedroom TV along with portable hand-held computer game consoles (eg, Nintendo, Playstation, Xbox), smartphone with games, internet and video, a family computer and a laptop and/or a tablet computer (eg iPad).Children routinely engage in two or more forms of screen viewing at the same time, such as TV and laptop.British teenagers are clocking up six hours of screen time a day, but research suggests the negative impacts start after two hours viewing time.Dr Sigman cites from a string of published studies suggesting links between prolonged screen time and conditions such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes. But he suggests the effects go further than those simply associated with being sedentary for long periods. He says prolonged screen time can lead to reductions in attention span because of its effects on the brain chemical dopamine. Dopamine is produced in response to screen novelty, says Dr Sigman. It is a key component of the brains reward system and implicated in addictive behaviour and the inability to pay attention.Screen addiction is increasingly being used by physicians to describe the growing number of children engaging in screen activities in a dependent manner, Dr Sigman says. And there are other psychosocial problems associated with excess screen time. These include Facebook depression, reported by the American Academy of Pediatrics, which develops when young people spend too much time on social media sites and then begin to exhibit classic symptoms of depression.Dr Sigman says: Perhaps because screen time is not a dangerous substance or a visibly risky activity, it has eluded the scrutiny that other health issues attract. He says there are many questions remaining about the precise nature of the association between screen time and adverse outcomes, but adds:The advice from a growing number of both researchers and medical associations and government departments elsewhere is becoming unequivocal - reduce screen time.Developmental psychopathology expert Prof Lynne Murray, of the University of Reading, said: There is a well-established literature showing the adverse effects of screen experience on the cognitive development of children under three, and the US Paediatric Association for example has recommended no screen time before this age.If children do watch, however, adverse effects are mitigated by watching with a supportive partner - usually adult , who can scaffold and support the childs experience, and by watching more familiar material.A lot of screen material is not well designed for a childs cognitive processes, eg loud, fast changing stimulation - this is attention grabbing, but does not help processing.

Eagle grabs baby crocodile from river

Posted:

A baby crocodile, which when fully grown would expect to be top of the food chain, has become lunch for a hungry bird.In the rare example of one top predator eating rival of another species the fish eagle, which usually eats birds and small mammals, grabbed the hapless Nile crocodile in its sharp claws before flying away.Safari guide Mark Sheridan-Johnson, 32, who was raised in Tanzania but whose parents come from Newcastle, captured the sequence of images on his day off from showing tourists one of the wonders of his adopted homeland, the Selous Game Reserve.I didnt have any clients to take out that day so I was driving in my land cruiser looking for interesting wildlife to photograph, Mr Sheridan-Johnson said. In nine years of being a safari guide I would never expect to see this unheard of behaviour.I saw the fish eagle on the sand bank with something in its beak.I noticed it wasnt a fish but was in fact a Nile crocodile. The eagle quickly took off but I got a couple of shots of it flying away.I think this eagle could be a lone individual who has learnt how to hunt for crocodiles. It certainly knew what it was doing.

David Blaine completes electrifying stunt

Posted:

After 72 hours without food, surrounded by an artificial lightning storm crackling between low-current million-volt Tesla coils, David Blaines first words upon getting off the 20-foot-high platform were a handful of thank yous to the team who supported him in the event, and to fans of his work.Unable to stand on his own, before getting wheeled into an ambulance to get his health checked, Blaine revealed: This is my last endurance stunt that Im ever going to do. But I look forward to everything. Love you. After being sleep deprived with an empty stomach, Blaine told waiting reporters the first thing he would do: I feel like taking a nice long nap, after my shower.Blaines recent stunt grew out of an image he had of himself at the center of a giant plasma globe where audiences in New York City participated by controlling the levels of electricity surrounding him at the Hudson River Park pier. The illusionist was dressed in a 20-pound chain-mail suit for three days, shooting purplish arcs of lightning out of his hands all in unison with music.
