Allies lend conditional support: Drug authority bill sails through Senate

ISLAMABAD, Oct 17: The government succeeded in getting the Drug Regulatory Authority (DRA) Bill passed by the Senate unanimously on Wednesday, though its coalition partners said they were supporting it “conditionally”.

Malik for talks with two Baloch leaders

ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Rehman Malik said on Wednesday the Senate should form two committees comprising representatives of all political parties to hold talks with estranged Baloch leaders Harbayar Khan and Barhamdagh Bugti.

In a brief policy statement in the house on last week’s terrorist attack on Malala Yousufzai and the law and order situation in Balochistan, he said the government would facilitate the committees in visiting the troubled province and arranging meetings with the two nationalist leaders. But he suggested that the committees should be given 15 days to come up with their recommendations...

Licences of 28 brands of water cancelled

ISLAMABAD, Oct 17: The Pakistan Standards & Quality Control Authority cancelled licences of 28 companies found involved in marketing substandard bottled water for a couple of years.

Minister for Science and Technology Mir Changez Khan Jamali has provided to the National Assembly names of the brands whose licences had been cancelled. The water marketed by the companies, he said, had been declared unfit for human consumption by the PSQCA...

KESC tariff reduced

ISLAMABAD, Oct 17: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) approved on Wednesday a 44 paisa per unit reduction in tariff of the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) under monthly fuel adjustment charges, providing a partial relief on a 51 paisa increase for the month of November.

At a public hearing, the regulator approved two requests by the KESC to reduce tariff by about 7 paisa per unit for July and 37 paisa for August...
