PPP rejects demand for independent commission

ISLAMABAD, Oct 23: Rejecting the PML-N’s demand to form an independent commission to probe distribution of money by ISI among politicians, Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira asked the Sharif brothers on Tuesday to apologise to President Asif Ali Zardari and the nation for “stealing its mandate in the 1990 elections”.

“You are obliged to seek an apology from the president, the nation and history for stealing people’s mandate in 1990,” the minister said while addressing a press conference at the PPP’s central secretariat...

Vested interests scuttled crucial medical project

ISLAMABAD, Oct 23: The Public Accounts Committee of the National Assembly took up on Tuesday a unique case of bureaucratic hurdles in which a quality research for local production of injections for hepatitis-C patients was scuttled at an advanced stage.

Had the project for producing interferon injections gone ahead, the country would have saved about Rs70 billion which the government has been spending for importing the injections, the committee was informed...

Malik seeks review of SC verdict terming him ‘dishonest’

ISLAMABAD, Oct 23: Interior Minister Rehman Malik filed a petition in the Supreme Court on Tuesday seeking review of its ruling which held him dishonest and not sagacious. The filing of the petition coincided with a decision by the Election Commission not to proceed against Mr Malik for submitting a false statement about his foreign nationality.

On Sept 20, the apex court disqualified 11 members of parliament and provincial assemblies and ordered the ECP to initiate legal proceedings against Mr Malik. The short order also required him to reimburse all monetary benefits drawn by him up to July 11, 2012, for the period he occupied the public office...

EEC cuts tariff for motorbike industry

ISLAMABAD, Oct 23: The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the cabinet reduced on Tuesday tariff for motorcycle manufacturing industry and approved a Rs16 billion package for Pakistan International Airlines and another of Rs7.1 billion for Wah Industries.

Dual nationality: PM among 450 MPs yet to file declaration

ISLAMABAD, Oct 23: Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf is among over 450 lawmakers who are yet to submit declarations to the Election Commission, affirming that they do not hold dual nationality.

The commission decided to directly seek fresh declarations from the members of parliament in the second week of this month and warned that those failing to submit the declarations within one month would be presumed to be guilty of violating Article 63 (1)(c) of the Constitution...

NY police paid me to ‘bait’ Muslims, says informant

NEW YORK, Oct 23: A paid informant for the New York Police Department’s intelligence unit was under orders to “bait” Muslims into saying bad things as he lived a double life, snapping pictures inside mosques and collecting the names of innocent people attending study groups on Islam, he told The Associated Press.

Shamiur Rahman, a 19-year-old US citizen of Bengali descent who has now denounced his work as an informant, said police told him to embrace a strategy called “create and capture”. He said it involved creating a conversation about jihad or terrorism, then capturing the response to send to the NYPD. For his work, he earned as much as $1,000 a month and goodwill from the police after a string of minor marijuana arrests...
