Women still face gender gap in jobs, wages: report Posted: Women are closing the gender gap with men in health and education but struggle to get top jobs and salaries, data from a study of 135 countries showed on Wednesday.Gaps in senior positions, wages and leadership levels still persist, even in countries that promote equality in education and have a high level of economic integration among women, the World Economic Forum (WEF) said in its annual Global Gender Gap Report. The new figures were released just hours after a European Union initiative to set a 40-percent quota for women on the boards of listed companies stalled because of a lack of support. The report, which covered more than 90 percent of the worlds population, looked at how nations distribute resources and opportunities between women and men. It found that the Nordic countries, headed by Iceland, Finland and Norway, had done the best job of closing the gap, while Chad, Pakistan and Yemen had the worst rankings. While almost all countries had made progress in closing the gap in healthcare and education between women and men, only 60 percent of countries had managed to narrow the economic gender gap and only 20 percent had progressed on a political level, the study said.Of the top four global economies, the United States, Japan and Germany all made progress in closing their economic gender gap in 2012.However, they slipped in the overall ranking, which also looks at health, education and politics, with Germany falling two spots to 13th place, the United States sliding five spots to 22nd, and Japan dipping to 101st from 98th last year.China, which took a step backwards when it came to closing the economic gender gap, also fell in the overall ranking to 69th place from 66th last year.Greece, which ranked 82nd, registered one of the biggest falls since 2011, when it ranked 56th -- largely owing to a change in the percentage of women holding ministerial positions, from 31 percent in 2011 to only six percent in 2012.Countries such as Nicaragua (9) and Luxembourg (17) climbed up the ranking thanks to an increase in the percentage of women in parliament.Reducing the male-female employment gap has been an important driver of European economic growth in the last decade, the report said. It added that introducing even more equality could boost US gross domestic product by nine percent and eurozone GDP by up to 13 percent.EU Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding said Tuesday that a move to set a 40-percent quota for women on the boards of listed companies had been delayed amid an ongoing row over the lack of female candidates for a key European Central Bank (ECB) job.Reding, who was scheduled to present the plan, said on Twitter: Gender balance directive postponed, owing to insufficient support for the idea within the 27-member European Commission. The delay came a day after the European Parliaments economic affairs committee rejected the nomination of Luxembourger Yves Mersch to the ECB executive board, because it would result in an all-male board until 2018.The WEF report said that closing the global gender gap was fundamental to economic growth and stability. It pointed out that no country in the Middle East or north Africa featured in the top 100 of the index: these were regions often troubled by instability and frequently pointed to when gender inequality is discussed.Elsewhere in Africa, however, five countries ranked in the top 30.By region, the Philippines (8) remained the highest-ranking country from Asia in the index. With women making up 50 percent of countries human capital, governments needed to find ways to benefit from their talent, insisted Saadia Zahidi, senior director at the World Economic Forum. If that capital is not invested in, educated or healthy, countries are going to lose out in terms of their long-term potential, she said. Only six countries had showed an improvement of 10 percentage points since the report launched seven years ago, Zahidi added, and almost 75 countries have improved by less than five points. So the progress is very slow... even though we are seeing a trend in a positive direction, she said. |
No change in US stance on Durand Line: Victoria Nuland Posted: The United States endorsing the statement by US Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan Ambassador Marc Grossman regarding porous Pak-Afghan border, reiterated that Durand Line is an internationally recognized boundary between Pakistan and Afghanistan.Reaffirming Washington’s position over the 2640-km-long border, State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland said, “Our policy on this has not changed. It was correctly stated by Ambassador Grossman that we see this as the internationally recognized boundary.”It should be mentioned here that the Afghan government did not approve of a statement made by US Special Representative for Pakistan and Afghanistan Grossman during his visit to Kabul, where he reiterated Washington’s policy of international recognition of Durand Line. The US Department spokesperson, however, was not aware of Afghanistan’s protest with the US on the issue.Replying to a question if Washington received any protest from the Afghan government following Grossman’s statement, the spokesperson replied, “To my knowledge, no. But I know there has been quite a bit of press commentary out there”. |
6.6-magnitude earthquake hits Costa Rica Posted: US forecasters said that there was no threat of a destructive widespread tsunami. The epicenter of the quake, which struck at 6:45 pm (0045 GMT), was located over land, 140 kilometers (90 miles) west of the capital San Jose, but only 10 kilometers from the town of Hojancha, the US Geological Survey said. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a bulletin saying no destructive widespread tsunami threat exists. But the center warned that quakes of that magnitude can generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts located within 100 kilometers of the epicenter. In September, a powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck off Costa Ricas Pacific coast, briefly knocking out power lines, damaging rooftops and causing panic, but no reported casualties. |
ASEAN rejects Abbotts policy to turn back asylum-seeker boats Posted: ASEAN Secretary General Surin Pitsuwan has labelled as counterproductive the controversial policy of the Australian opposition party to turn back asylum-seeker boats, a report said Wednesday. As part of his plan to tackle the growing problem, opposition leader Tony Abbott has said he will instruct the navy to tow back the boats, which mostly travel from Indonesia, if he wins power in elections due next year.Southeast Asias top diplomat said he believed much of what Abbott said was rhetoric for a domestic audience but warned Australias ties to the region could be hurt if he followed through with his threat.Pitsuwan, who heads the 10-nation grouping, told the Sydney Morning Herald: It will be counterproductive just to impose certain decisions on the neighbours at the risk of losing many other agendas, many other issues on the international agenda.I dont think its worth it.Asylum-seekers arriving by boat are a contentious issue in Australia, where many consider those who bypass official refugee channels to make the dangerous journey as queue jumpers.More than 12,000 have arrived so far in 2012, with the ruling Labor government now sending them to offshore processing camps in the Pacific nations of Nauru and Papua New Guinea as a deterrent measure.Pitsuwan said the issue could only be resolved by a regional approach, not by divorcing, by turning your back to us. He suggested much of what Abbott said on the issue was political point-scoring.Rhetoric, political rhetoric, you have to take (Abbotts comments) as such, he said. I think Southeast Asia or ASEAN is really mature enough to appreciate that some of them are internal rhetoric for internal consumption, for internal political communication.Abbott is yet to outline details of how his tow-back policy would work in practice but insists it would undermine people-smugglers business model and deter asylum-seekers from attempting the dangerous voyage.ASEAN groups Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. |
Fergie baffled by Uniteds defensive woes Posted: Fergusons side were punished for a sloppy opening to their Group H clash at Old Trafford on Tuesday as two goals from Braga captain Alan stunned Old Trafford into silence. For the eighth time in 12 matches this season, United were forced to come from behind after conceding the opening goal. While Ferguson was full of admiration for the Hernandez-inspired fightback, it was revealing that, without any prompting, he launched into an analysis of his teams problems at the back during the post-match press conference.Even more intriguing was Fergusons revelation that he doesnt have a cure for the careless way United are surrendering so many goals. There was no disputing the quality of Alans strikes in the 2nd and 20th minutes: but the failure of Alexander Buttner to close down the playmaker for both goals, combined with the ease with which Hugo Viana and Eder were allowed to provide the assists, has given Ferguson serious cause for concern.I cant understand our defending, I cant get to bottom of it at all, Ferguson said. If you analyse all the goals we are losing they are all different types. Today it was a cross, then a cutback into the box with players free.I cant put my finger on it, but we arent getting good starts to games thats for sure. Its making it difficult for us.Its interesting that its the home games when we are conceding early goals, but well sort it out eventually, Im sure of that.Fortunately for Ferguson, while Braga proved adept at exploiting Uniteds flaws at the back, Jose Peseiros side had plenty of holes in their defence as well.Mexican striker Hernandez started the revival with a 25th minute header from Shinji Kagawas cross, then Jonny Evans equalised with a scuffed 62nd minute shot. That set the stage for Hernandez to head the winner from Tom Cleverleys cross with 15 minutes remaining. Our forward play is getting us out of holes all the time, Ferguson said. We produced some fantastic football and in the second half kept a really good momentum and speed to our game.We got a result people wouldnt have expected when we were 2-0 down. Credit to the players, they dont stop.Ferguson reserved special praise for Hernandez, who endured something of a sophomore slump last term after a blistering debut campaign with United.Hernandez faces a tough battle to hold down a regular place as he competes with Rooney, van Persie and Danny Welbeck, but Ferguson admits it is a selection headache he is happy to have. The boy is improving all the time. Hes a fantastic trainer and practises all the time, Ferguson said. Hes given me a problem and I think thats good. His goal ratio for us is fantastic. |

Planning and Finance Minister Jorge Giordani said in a speech to the National Assembly that the government projects inflation in 2013 to be between 14 percent and 16 percent. The governments proposed budget includes more than $92 billion in spending. Thats a 33 percent increase from the congressional approved 2012 budget, which totaled about $68 billion. |
Gaza: Bomb kills 2 Palestinians, injures Israeli soldier Posted: An Israeli army officer was wounded and two Palestinians killed Tuesday in the latest flare-up of violence along the border between Israel and the Gaza Strip.A bomb seriously wounded an Israeli army officer on patrol along the border with the Gaza Strip, in an attack claimed by a leftist Palestinian group. Two subsequent Israeli air strikes on northern Gaza Strip killed two Palestinians and wounded seven more, said a spokesman a health ministry spokesman.A statement from Hamas, which controls Gaza, said those killed were members of its military wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades. An Israeli army spokesman said the air force had attacked two groups of Palestinians who were about to fire rockets into southern Israel.More than six rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip in three hours, the spokesman said. The air raid came hours the bomb that wounded the Israeli officer.Militants also fired four rockets from Gaza on southern Israel without causing any casualties or damage, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld told AFP.A soldier was severely wounded during a routine patrol along the fence in the Kissufim area, a military spokeswoman said of the bombing which occurred shortly before 7:00 am (0500 GMT).The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine claimed responsibility for laying an explosive device which wounded an officer in the Givati brigade, it said in a statement.Military officials were initially unsure what had caused the explosion, but eventually established it was an explosive device.Hamas security officials said the explosion occurred as troops were mounting an incursion into Gaza territory. The IDF (army) will not tolerate any attempt to harm Israeli civilians, and will operate against anyone who uses terror against the state of Israel, a military statement warned.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu once again warned he would strike back at Gaza militants, which he said were supported by Tehran.Today we engaged in exchanges against terrorist aggression that comes from our southern border in Gaza, but it actually comes from Iran and a whole terror network that is supporting these attacks, said Netanyahu. The way to fight terror is to fight terror, and that we shall do with great force.Defence Minister Ehud Barak noted the explosive device was rigged to a gate on the fence, and said Israel takes the attack very seriously. The Israeli army will react to this in the right way and at the right time, he said during a tour outside Jerusalem of the Israeli-US missile defence exercise named Austere Challenge 12.The latest incidents on Tuesday came as the emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, made a landmark visit to Gaza where he inaugurated a multi-million dollar project to rebuild the impoverished Palestinian territory. |
Obama, Romney plunge into campaign's final 2 weeks Posted: The two are neck-and-neck, and Romney presented a more centrist approach to foreign policy during a Monday night debate the last of three, and that one on foreign policy. The Republicans performance, however, gave the Obama campaign more ammunition to allege that Romney is willing to shift from or lose his more conservative positions to satisfy his more mainstream constituents. We are accustomed to seeing politicians change their position from four years ago, Obama told a Florida rally Tuesday. We are not accustomed to seeing politicians change their positions from four days ago.By abruptly moderating his foreign policy positions, Romney is hoping to neutralize one of Obamas main strengths with the election only two weeks away. But the move toward the political center comes with potential pitfalls.By abandoning several of his sharpest criticisms of Obama from the past several months, Romney risks upsetting some conservatives and reinforcing the allegation levied repeatedly by the president during the debate on Monday night that his positions lack conviction and leadership.Obamas campaign released a 20-page booklet called the Blueprint for Americas Future on Tuesday to promote a second-term agenda, responding to Republican criticism that the president has not clearly articulated a plan for the next four years. The plan includes spending more on education, boosting manufacturing jobs and raising taxes on the wealthy.Neither side can claim the lead at this late stage of the race, with polls showing the race virtually tied nationally and in some of the key states. Obamas challenge is to convince voters who may be hurting financially that he is better qualified to lead the country back to economic prosperity than Romney, who made a fortune as a successful businessman.Romney has exuded confidence on the campaign trail following his strong performance in the first debate on Oct. 3.Obama was campaigning in Florida and Ohio, two of nine battleground states that do not reliably vote for one party or the other, and that therefore will decide the election. The U.S. president is not chosen according to the popular nationwide vote but in state-by-state contests. With the final debate behind them, the economy ruled the day. Obama brandished a new 20-page summary of his second-term agenda and told a campaign crowd in Florida his rivals blueprint doesnt really create jobs. His deficit plan doesnt reduce the deficit; it adds to it.Later Tuesday, the president joined Vice President Joe Biden in what is likely to be the most crucial battleground state of all, Ohio.In Dayton, Obama said of his rival: In the closing weeks of the campaign, hes doing everything he can to hide his true positions. He is terrific at making presentations about stuff he thinks is wrong with America, but he sure cant give you an answer about what will make it right. And thats not leadership you can trust.Obama advisers see the new approach as a way to capitalize on polls that show voters see the president as more trustworthy than Romney. A Washington Post/ABC News poll last week showed 55 percent of likely voters said Obama is honest and trustworthy compared to 47 percent who felt that way about Romney.Romney and running mate Paul Ryans schedule reflected the strategy of driving up Republican vote totals in areas such as the Denver suburbs of Colorado and Cincinnati, Ohio. The challenger began his final two-week sprint in Nevada, where he told a large, cheering crowd in Henderson that Obama wants a new term for the same policies that have produced slow economic growth and high unemployment for four long years. He is a status quo candidacy. ... Thats why his campaign is slipping and ours is gaining so much steam, he said.Romneys aides dismissed Obamas 20-page booklet as nothing new, and the former Massachusetts governor said of the president, His vision for the future is a repeat of the past.During Monday nights debate, Romney largely expressed agreement with how Obama has conducted U.S. foreign policy. He dramatically shifted his position and agreed with the president that all U.S. forces should be out of Afghanistan by the end of 2014. Romney previously had criticized Obama for setting such a date for withdrawal, saying he was giving the Taliban insurgency and its al-Qaida allies a date after which the militants could begin a drive to retake the country.Romney also dropped the conditions he had set for troop withdrawal.Romney even congratulated Obama on taking out Osama bin Laden and taking on the leadership of al-Qaida, but he added, We cant kill our way out of this mess. ... We must have a comprehensive and robust strategy. He did not offer specifics. |
Zynga to cut 5 percent of its staff Posted: The maker of social-media games including FarmVille and Texas HoldEm Poker said Tuesday that it will cut about 5 percent of its full-time workforce. Its the first-ever round of layoffs at Zynga, which is based in San Francisco and has about 3,200 employees.Zynga also said it will get rid of 13 older games and reduce its investment in the game The Ville. It will close its studio in Boston and may close studios in Japan and the U.K. It runs 18 studios worldwide. Its slumping stock rose more than 3 percent in aftermarket trading following the announcement, which came a day ahead of Zyngas third-quarter earnings report. The stock also likely got a boost from a better-than-expected earnings report Tuesday by Facebook Inc. Zynga is by far the No. 1 gaming company on Facebook.Zynga said earlier this month that it expected to post a third-quarter loss due to weak demand for some of its titles. It said its revenues would likely be nearly flat compared to the same period last year. The company also previously announced that it would adopt some broad cost-cutting measures to help improve its performance.CEO Mark Pincus said that the job cuts were the most painful part of the overall cost-reduction plan, which also includes significant cuts in spending on data hosting, advertising and use of contractors.Zynga makes five of the 10 most popular games on Facebook, according to researcher AppData. In the latest quarter, Zynga accounted for 7 percent of Facebooks total revenue, down from 10 percent in the second quarter and 12 percent in the third quarter of 2011.Zyngas shares rose 7 cents to $2.27 in after-hours trading. The company went public in December at $10 per share and its stock price peaked in March at $15.91. The stock has lost about 85 percent of its value since then. |
BBC pulls plug on world's oldest teletext service Posted: BBC Ceefax, the worlds first teletext service, ceased transmission on Tuesday after delivering 38 years of up-to-the-minute news and sports updates to the British public.Olympic champion Mary Peters brought the curtain down on the service when she turned off the last analogue TV signal in Northern Ireland at 23.30 local time (2230GMT) as part of the countrys switch to digital broadcasts. Former prime minister John Major said Ceefax would be much missed. At moments of high pressure -- with little time for detailed examination of the news -- Ceefax headlines offered an instant window on the world, he said. From breaking global news to domestic sports news, Ceefax was speedy, accurate and indispensable, he added. It was particularly popular with sports fans, enabling them to keep tabs on the latest score in multiple fixtures.Olympic hero Sebastian Coe said Ceefax had been an invaluable news service for every sports fan over the last 38 years. I have checked in on many a sports news story, track and field triumph and, of course, Chelsea results |
Posted: After moves to launch the tax across the European Union were scuttled during months of raucous debate by Britain and others, the EU executive proposed that countries in favour, including France, Germany, Italy and Spain, go ahead on their own.A core group of member states are keen to move ahead with a common FTT ... And I applaud this, said the European Unions taxation commission Algirdas Semeta.I firmly believe that an EU FTT has great benefits to offer ... I also believe that now is the right moment to move ahead with it. Because in difficult times, fairness matters.Proponents of a transactions tax, which has its roots in the 1970s, believe it will help curb the culture of greed that led to the 2008 global financial crisis and ensure that a bailed out industry pays its fair share. This is a once in a generation chance to ease the burden on European citizens, said Oxfam spokesman Nicolas Mombrial. Countries which have not signed up should do so or risk finding themselves on the wrong side of history. While Britain has loudly opposed the introduction of a transactions tax in fear it would hit the City of London, Austria, Belgium, Greece, Portugal, Slovakia and Slovenia have all signed on to the scheme.Late Tuesday, Estonia became the 11th nation to join the group, Semeta said on Twitter. The Commission said in a statement that all the legal conditions to impose an FTT had been met, and that it believed the tax would not undermine the workings of the European single market which seeks to ensure a level playing field for all. This tax can raise billions of euros of much-needed revenue for member states in these difficult times, said Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso said.We need to ensure the costs of the crisis are shared by the financial sector instead of shouldered by ordinary citizens. The introduction of the FTT by a small group of nations was made possible through rarely-used EU powers of enhanced cooperation, enabling a minimum of nine nations -- one third of the 27 member states -- to trailblaze new legislation. This has been used twice before when the EU-27 failed to reach unanimity, in cross-border divorce law and more recently for the EU patent.Britain feared taxing trade in stocks and other financial instruments would move business to New York, Hong Kong or Singapore, harming its status as the top European financial market. Britain lays claim to about three quarters of the entire European finance industry. The commission proposal must yet be formally approved by members of the 27-nation bloc who will not be applying the FTT, and by the European Parliament, before taxation commissioner Semeta can release a detailed proposal on the tax. |
Stone age tomb unearthed in Sweden Posted: It was found at a megalithic monument in the shape of a ship called the Ales Stenar (Ales Stones). The tomb, in Sweden, was likely robbed of stones to build the Viking-era ship monument. We found traces — mostly imprints — of large boulders, said lead archaeologist Bengst Söderberg of the Swedish National Heritage Board. So my conviction is that some of the stones at least, they are standing on the ship setting.Perched on a seaside cliff in the village of Kåseberga stands the Ales Stenar, also called Ales Stones, 59 massive boulders arranged in the 220-foot (67-meter)-long outline of a ship. Most researchers believe the 1,400-year-old ship structure is a burial monument built toward the end of Swedens Iron Age.Local legend has it that the mythic King Ale lies beneath the site. The Ales Stenar megaliths, some of which weigh as much as 4,000 pounds (1,800 kilograms), have distinctive cut marks similar to ones found at Stone Age sites. In 2006, archaeologists used magnetic sensors and radar to map the areas underground terrain and found a larger circular structure about 541 feet (165 m) in diameter, with a 65-foot by 25-foot rectangle at its heart.Last week, the team finally dug a small trench through the center of the circle and unearthed the imprints of giant boulders that had been removed long ago.Though the team didnt find a skeleton, the imprints suggested the site was a Neolithic burial chamber called a dolmen — several upright stones with a horizontal boulder on top in which a body would be placed. |
