Many outlets closed: CNG stations warned against overcharging

ISLAMABAD, Oct 26: A number of CNG stations remained closed on Friday and their owners expressed reservations over the new formula under which the price of the transport fuel was reduced by over Rs30 per kg.

On the other hand, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) issued a stern warning to the CNG stations. “Chief secretaries of the provinces have been requested to take strict action against CNG stations overcharging consumers,” a spokesman for the regulator said....

Eidul Azha starts in S. Arabia

MINA (Saudi Arabia), Oct 26: Some 2.5 million pilgrims from across the world pelted pillars representing Satan with stones on Friday, the first day of the Eidul Azha holiday here.

Pilgrims from 189 countries advanced in waves around Jamrat al-Aqaba, the largest of three adjacent pillars, in the rite that will continue at least until Saturday. The ritual marks the start of one of the most sacred Muslim holidays....

Four-hour cellphone shutdown today

ISLAMABAD, Oct 26: Interior Minister Rehman Malik said on Friday that cellphone service would remain suspended from 6am to 10am on the first day of Eid (Saturday) in 13 selected places.

Talking to reporters, the minister said the decision to keep the service suspended had been taken in the light of credible information from intelligence agencies and the provincial governments about “threats to national security” on Eid day....

40 Afghans die in suicide attack on Eid congregation

MAZAR-E-SHARIF, Oct 26: A suicide bomber killed at least 40 people in a mosque in Afghanistan’s relatively peaceful north on Friday as worshippers gathered for Eidul Azha prayers, police officials said.

The attack in Maimana, capital of Faryab province, also wounded 40, regional police chief General Abdul Khaliq Aqsai said, pinning the blame on the Taliban....

Gunmen in Swat kill 2 anti-Taliban elders

PESHAWAR, Oct 26: Gunmen shot dead two members of an anti-Taliban peace committee in Swat valley, where militants tried to murder schoolgirl activist Malala Yousufzai, police said on Friday.

The shooting will heighten fears of a campaign of targeted killings in Swat, as in the last four months, two businessmen and outspoken anti-Taliban campaigners have been shot dead and two others wounded....

Commission on new provinces yet to get legal cover

ISLAMABAD, Oct 26: The creation of new provinces in Punjab prior to the general election remains a pipe dream since the parliamentary commission formed for the purpose has yet to get ‘legal cover’ and a notification specifying its powers is still awaited.

Sources told Dawn on Friday that the Parliamentary Commission on New Provinces in Punjab headed by PPP Senator Farhatullah Babar had failed to hold its fourth meeting for over a month now as it has been waiting for a notification to be issued by National Assembly Speaker Dr Fehmida Mirza in order to remove some ‘technical and legal hitches’ before it could formally start its work....

Obama extends greeting on Haj, Eid

WASHINGTON, Oct 26: President Barack Obama has sent greetings to Muslims around the world on the occasion of Eidul Azha and congratulated the pilgrims who performed Haj this year.

“Michelle and I extend our best wishes for a joyful Eidul Azha to Muslims in the United States and around the world. We also congratulate the millions of peaceful pilgrims who are performing the Haj, including thousands of American Muslims,” Mr Obama said in a statement released by the White House....

AG challenges SC order in Riaz contempt case

ISLAMABAD, Oct 26: Attorney General Irfan Qadir has challenged the Sept 20 order of the Supreme Court which held that he was not competent to prosecute Malik Riaz of Bahria Town on contempt charges since he had represented the property tycoon in the past.

In a review petition, the attorney general requested the court to recall the order and allow him to prosecute Malik Riaz because it was a requirement under the law and necessary to ensure a fair trial....

Indian foreign minister Krishna resigns

NEW DELHI, Oct 26: Indian Foreign Ministr S.M. Krishna resigned on Friday ahead of a cabinet reshuffle scheduled on Sunday.

Press Trust of India said the 80-year-old leader from Karnataka had sent in his resignation to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the afternoon. With the assembly elections due before next May in Karnataka the former chief minister may be given a party assignment in the state....

Injured son of journalist dies

QUETTA, Oct 26: A Khuzdar journalist’s son who was injured in a shooting incident on Thursday, died in a local hospital on Friday.

Two men on a motorbike had opened fire on a car in Khuzdar on Thursday, killing Siraj Ahmed and injuring Manzoor Ahmed, both sons of Nadeem Gurganari, president of the Khuzdar Press Club....

Sindh local govt law intensifies polarisation

THE situation in Sindh is grim after the recent passage of the Sindh People’s Local Government Act 2012 by the provincial assembly. Differences over the law have pitted the ruling Pakistan People’s Party against nationalist parties and other opponents of law in the province.

Both supporters and detractors of the new law have tried to demonstrate their political strength by staging public meetings. The PPP – considered the most popular party in Sindh – held a rally in Hyderabad on Oct 15 while the Sindh Bachayo Committee (SBC), a grouping of forces opposed to the local government law, and its component parties also staged similar shows....
