Romney hopes to shift focus back to weak economy

Posted:

Presidential candidate Mitt Romney wanted to keep voters focused on the U.S. economy Friday instead of a fellow Republicans comments that pregnancy caused by rape is something God intended. With President Barack Obama spending the day at the White House after a two-day dash across eight battleground states that will determine the tight election, Romney planned what he called a major speech on the economy, the top issue among voters with less than two weeks left before Nov. 6.Romney, however, faced questions about the remarks of Indiana Senate candidate Richard Mourdock and new questions about his role in a key supporters divorce. Court documents released Thursday revealed that Romney created a special class of company stock for Staples founder Tom Stembergs then-wife as a favor. Romney uses his equity capital firm Bains involvement in the creation of the office supply company to show off his business skills.Romney has tried to ignore both lines of attack, instead accusing Obama of playing partisan politics in an incredibly shrinking campaign.Opinion polls show Obama and Romney tied nationally. A new Associated Press-GfK poll of likely voters had Romney up 47 percent to 45 percent, a result within the polls margin of sampling error. The presidential contest has crossed the $2 billion fundraising mark, putting the election on track to be the costliest in history. Its being fueled by a campaign finance system vastly altered by the new proliferation of independent political action committees that are bankrolling TV ads in closely contested statesRomney was to deliver his speech on the economy in the battleground state of Iowa. Instead of more spending, more borrowing from China and higher taxes from Washington, well renew our faith in the power of free people pursuing their dreams, Romney says in excerpts his campaign released before the speech. He argues that Obama has no proposals that can meet the challenges of the times. The government on Friday said U.S. economic growth improved to a slightly faster 2 percent rate in the third quarter, but Romney called that discouraging and said he could do better.Tepid growth has given Romney an opening to challenge Obamas assessment that the economy is moving in the right direction. While Romney is seen by voters as better qualified to handle the economy recovery, recent polling shows Americans are increasingly positive about the direction of the country.Obama returned to Washington late Thursday after a 40-hour, coast-to-coast tour of eight battleground states. On Friday, he will reach out to key constituencies in an MTV interview aimed at rallying the youth vote and an interview with American Urban Radio Networks, which has a largely black audience. The U.S. presidential race is not decided by popular vote but on a state-by-state basis. The outcome depends on nine of the 50 U.S. states Ohio, Florida, Virginia, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Iowa, Wisconsin, Nevada and Colorado that do not reliably vote Democrat or Republican.Obama on Thursday intensified pressure on Romney to break ties with Mourdock over the candidates remarks on abortion. The comments offered the Obama campaign a new opportunity to highlight differences with Romney on an issue important to women. The president had long enjoyed an edge with that voting bloc, but a recent Associated Press-GfK poll found Romney had erased the presidents 16-point advantage among female likely voters.Obama advisers insist theyve lost no ground with women, but their eagerness to highlight Romneys connections to Mourdock showed a degree of nervousness within the campaign. With the candidates virtually tied in national polling, a significant lead among women voters could tip the balance.

Sandy pounds Bahamas after killing 40 in Caribbean

Hurricane Sandy rolled out of the Bahamas on Friday after causing 40 deaths across the Caribbean, churning toward the U.S. East Coast, where it threatens to join forces with winter weather fronts to create a devastating super storm. The Category 1 hurricane toppled light posts, flooded roads and tore off tree branches as it charged through Cat Island and Eleuthera in the scattered archipelago, with authorities reporting one man killed, the British CEO of an investment bank. The death toll was still rising in impoverished Haiti, reaching 26 on Friday as word of disasters reached officials and rain continued to fall.Joseph Edgard Celestin, a spokesman for Haitis civil protection office, said some people died trying to cross storm-swollen rivers. While the storms center missed the country as it passed on Wednesday, Haitis ramshackle housing and denuded hillsides make it especially vulnerable to flood damage.Officials at a morgue in the western town of Grand Goave said a mudslide crashed through a wooden home on Thursday, killing 40-year-old Jacqueline Tatille and her four children, ranging in ages from 5 to 17.If the rain continues, for sure well have more people die, said morgue deputy Joseph Franck Laporte. The earth cannot hold the rain.Sandy was a Category 2 hurricane when it wreaked havoc in Cuba on Thursday, killing 11 people in eastern Santiago and Guantanamo provinces as its howling winds and rain destroyed thousands of houses and ripped off roofs. Authorities said it was Cubas deadliest storm since July 2005, when category 5 Hurricane Dennis killed 16 people and caused $2.4 billion in damage.Cuban authorities said the islands 11 dead included a 4-month-old boy who was crushed when his home collapsed and an 84-year-old man in Santiago province. Near the city of Guantanamo, the Communist Party daily Granma reported, two men were killed by falling trees.Sandy also killed a man in Jamaica on Wednesday when a boulder crashed through his house, and police in the Bahamas said a 66-year-old man died after falling from his roof in upscale Lyford Cay late Thursday while trying to repair a window shutter. Officials at Deltec Bank & Trust identified him as Timothy Fraser-Smith, who became CEO in June 2000.One death was reported in Puerto Rico. Police said a man in his 50s was swept away Friday by a swollen river in the southern town of Juana Diaz, where rain from Sandys outer bands has been steadily falling. On Friday afternoon, the hurricanes center was about 30 miles (50 kilometers) north-northeast of Great Abaco Island in the Bahamas and 430 miles (695 kilometers) south-southeast of Charleston, South Carolina. Sandy was moving north at 7 mph (11 kph) with maximum sustained winds near 75 mph (120 kph).

Cycling: Armstrong's Tour victories to have no winner

Posted:

The 1999-2005 Tour de France races will have no winners attributed to them, embattled world cycling officials announced Friday, ordering doping-tainted icon Lance Armstrong to repay his prize money. The International Cycling Union (UCI) this week effectively erased Armstrong from the cycling history books when it decided not to appeal sanctions imposed on the American by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA).A damning report by USADA last week concluded that Armstrong helped orchestrate the most sophisticated doping programme in the history of sport. An UCI management committee on Friday acknowledged that decisive action was needed in response to the report.Armstrong will now lose all of his results from 1998, the year he resumed racing after successfully battling cancer, and a year before the first of his seven consecutive yellow jersey wins from 1999-2005.With respect to Lance Armstrong and the implications of the USADA sanctions which it endorsed on Monday 22 October, the management committee decided not to award victories to any other rider or upgrade other placings in any of the affected events, the UCI said. The committee decided to apply this ruling from now on to any competitive sporting results disqualified due to doping for the period from 1998 to 2005, without prejudice to the statute of limitation. The UCI added: The committee also called on Armstrong and all other affected riders to return the prize money they had received. It is estimated that Armstrong earned prize money of 2.95 million euros for his Tour de France victories. The UCI justified its decision not to re-attribute podium spots on the Tour as a point of principle. The UCI management committee acknowledged that a cloud of suspicion would remain hanging over this dark period - but that while this might appear harsh for those who rode clean, they would understand there was little honour to be gained in reallocating places, it said.Tour de France organisers later pointed out that the UCIs decision reflected their own. This decision is entirely consistent with the wishes already expressed 10 days ago by the organisers of the event, said a brief statement. The UCI, whose president Pat McQuaid and predecessor Hein Verbruggen have come under increasing scrutiny over their stance on doping, also announced the establishment of an independent external commission to look into the various allegations made about UCI relating to the Armstrong affair. The committee agreed that part of the independent commissions remit would be to find ways to ensure that persons caught for doping were no longer able to take part in the sport, including as part of an entourage, it said.A report and recommendations from this commission are expected to be published no later than June 1, 2013.Pending those findings, the UCI froze its legal case for defamation against Irish journalist Paul Kimmage, the former Sunday Times reporter who accused the body of corruption.UCI is determined to turn around this painful episode in the history of our sport, McQuaid said.We will take whatever actions are deemed necessary by the independent commission and we will put cycling back on track.Today, cycling is a completely different sport from what it was in the period 1998-2005.Riders are now subject to the most innovative and effective anti-doping procedures and regulations in sport. Nevertheless, we have listened to the worlds reaction to the Lance Armstrong affair and have taken these additional decisive steps in response to the grave concerns raised.

Pakistan Premier League in March next year: Zaka Ashraf

The PCB is committed to launching its own domestic Twenty20 competition along the lines of the Indian Premier League next year despite Cricket South Africas (CSA) refusal to reschedule Pakistans forthcoming tour to the country.PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf on Friday said that the Pakistan Premier League (PPL) will be played in March 2013 and a request has already been made to the chief patron of the board, President Asif Ali Zardari to allow a five-year tax exemption for the event. There is a lot of foreign and local investment involved in holding this event and I have already requested the President to allow us the tax exemption as the Pakistan League will create job opportunities and will be good for our economy and image, said Ashraf. We just need a two-week window even though the Indian Premier League will also start from first week of April. We have already started groundwork for the project, he added.Ashraf returned from Dubai this morning after attending a series of meetings in connection with the PPL.He said the PPL will feature five franchises consisting of 30 international players, with six each in every team.We are targeting the big names of international cricket because their presence will boost the PPL and we are preparing a budget of millions for this. The Sialkot sports industry is keen to buy a franchise, someone like Mian Mansha is also ready to have his own franchise. The local and expatriate business community in the UAE also wants in, so we are well prepared for the event, he said. The PCB chief is keen on making the event an annual affair. We have our own mechanism to hold the PPL but I can say that we have taken inspiration from the IPL. May be, one day the PPL franchise can be part of the IPL as well, he said. The chairman said the tax exemption has been sought to make the Twenty20 league a financially successful model till it became self-reliant and to ensure the top players could be paid competitive sums for coming to Pakistan. He also hoped that the international cricket could be revived as early as next year following the successful staging of two exhibition matches in Karachi involving an International World XI and All Pakistan Star XI.For that to happen, Ashraf was committed towards providing best security measures to the overseas players. We have set up our own anti-vigilance and security divisions and we are also in close contact with the government as far as security arrangements for the tournament is concerned, he said.

Sydney Sixers reach Champions League final

Posted:

Australian outfit Sydney Sixers snatched a dramatic two-wicket victory over Titans Friday to set up a Champions League Twenty20 final against another South African side, Highveld Lions.Titans made 163-5 at their SuperSport Park home ground thanks to an unbeaten sixth-wicket partnership between middle-order David Wiese (61 not out) and opener Henry Davids (59 not out).Sixers reached 164-8 in reply with the winning run coming off the last ball and they face Lions at the Wanderers Sunday to see who succeeds Mumbai Indians as winners of the annual competition. While Sixers kept in touch with the required run rate, they started to lose wickets with worrying frequency and needed 19 off the last two overs with three wickets standing.Sydney had a lucky escape off the final ball of the penultimate over as Farhaan Behardien spilled an attempt to catch Pat Cummins, who had skied a stroke intended to clear long-off.The Australian outfit needed eight runs from the last over, but after a cheeky Ben Rohrer scoop earned two, he was out next ball, sending a mistimed shot straight to Roelef van der Merwe at mid-off.Tight bowling by CJ de Villiers kept Titans in a match that grew more tense with every ball and it came down to the final one with the visitors needing a run to win.And that is what the Sixers got as they scrambled a bye in a match that atoned for a far less dramatic first semi-final Thursday with the Lions defeating the Delhi Daredevils by 22 runs at Kingsmead in Durban.
