US presidential race clouded by looming storm

Posted:

The approach of what could be the most devastating storm in decades threw a surprise into the US presidential contest Saturday as Barack Obama and Mitt Romney hunted for votes -- and took swipes at each other -- amid fears of chaos ahead of the November 6 election. The incumbent and his Republican rival campaigned at opposite ends of the eastern seaboard Saturday -- Obama in New Hampshire and his rival in Florida -- while their campaigns kept an eagle eye on Hurricane Sandy. With the storm -- dubbed Frankenstorm -- now stalking the US East Coast, Romney canceled all his scheduled rallies in battleground Virginia Sunday to get out of the way of frantic preparations for the fierce weather system, instead returning to Ohio, another make or break swing state.Vice President Joe Biden did the same on Saturday.Obama, who made no changes in his campaign schedule, reviewed emergency preparations in a conference call with top domestic security and emergency assistance officials Saturday as he flew to New Hampshire, the White House said. This an example yet again of the president having to put his responsibilities as commander-in-chief and leader of the country first while at the same time he pursues his responsibilities as a candidate for re-election, White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters on the flight.Currently a category one hurricane, Sandy was forecast to ride slowly up the Atlantic coastline, bringing heavy rains and gusting winds to the Carolinas, before making landfall early this week somewhere between Virginia and New Jersey.Forecasters predict the storm will collide with a seasonal noreaster, creating a supercharged cold weather system that could burst through the Mid-Atlantic states as far inland as Ohio.Huge tidal surges, power outages, inland flooding and even heavy snowfall could then be in store for the final, frantic week of the US election campaign, adding a nasty twist to what already is a neck and neck race.Governors, anticipating the worst, declared states of emergency in New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, the US capital Washington and a coastal county in North Carolina.Aside from the threat to tens of millions of residents, the storm could up-end election-related preparations across several states, interfere with early voting and cause problems at polling stations. Both Obama and Romney were pushing supporters to vote early. So far, 10.5 million people have already cast their ballots, according to a count by experts at George Mason University near Washington. That is equivalent to about eight percent of all votes cast in 2008, and analysts said the early voting was on track to beat the record set in the last presidential elections, when more than 30 percent of ballots were cast before election day.

Iraq bombings, house raids leave 40 dead

Posted:

Iraqi insurgents unleashed a string of bombings and other attacks primarily targeting the countrys Shiite community on Saturday, leaving at least 40 dead in a challenge to government efforts to promote a sense of stability by preventing attacks during a major Muslim holiday. The bloodshed appeared to be the worst in Iraq since Sept. 9, when insurgents launched a wave of bombings and other attacks that left at least 92 dead in one of the countrys bloodiest days this year. The attacks underscored the difficulties facing the countrys leadership as it struggles to keep its citizens safe. Authorities had increased security in hopes of preventing attacks during the four-day Eid al-Adha celebrations, when people are off work and families gather in public places. The deadliest attacks struck in the evening in the Shiite neighborhood of Sadr City. Police said a car packed with explosives blew up near a market, killing 12 people and wounding 27. Half an hour later, a second car bomb went off in one of Sadr citys bus stations, killing 10 and injuring 31.Earlier in the day, a bomb exploded near playground equipment that had been set up for the holiday in a market on the capitals outskirts in the eastern neighborhood of Bawiya. Police officials said eight people were killed, including four children. Another 24 people, including children, were wounded, they added.Nobody expected this explosion because our neighborhood has been living in peace, away from the violence hitting the rest of the capital, said Bassem Mohammed, a 35-year-old father of three in the neighborhood who was startled by the blast. We feel sad for the children who thought that they would spend a happy time during Eid, but instead ended up getting killed or hurt.Elsewhere, a bomb attached to a bus carrying Iranian Shiite pilgrims killed five people and wounded nine, according to police. The bomb, hidden on the underside of the bus, detonated as the pilgrims were heading to a Shiite shrine in Baghdad to mark the holiday.Authorities have said they planned to increase the number of checkpoints, shut some roads and deploy extra personnel during the holiday period. They are also relying more on undercover intelligence agents, said Lt. Col. Saad Maan Ibrahim, a spokesman for the interior ministry. He emphasized that both bombings took place on the edge of the capital rather than in densely populated areas. The terrorists apparently werent able to get to the heart of the city. So they chose to attack soft targets on the outskirts, he said.In the northern city of Mosul, gunmen broke into the houses of two Shabak families, killing a boy and his parents in one and a mother and daughter in the other, according to police. A bomb exploded near the house of another Shabak family, wounding six family members.Shabaks are ethnically Turkomen and Shiite by religion. Most Shabaks were driven out of Mosul by Sunni militants during the sectarian fighting a few years ago.In Tuz Khormato, about 210 kilometers (130 miles) north of Baghdad, a car bomb exploded near in a neighborhood with a Turkomen Shiite majority. Mayor Shalal Abdoul said 11 people were wounded, including three children.Medics in nearby hospitals confirmed the casualties. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

Syria army says will fight back against rebel violations

Posted:

The Syrian army on Saturday accused rebels of committing increasing violations of a failed truce proposed for the Muslim Eid al-Adha holiday and vowed to fight back. For the second day, terrorist groups continued to flagrantly violate the ceasefire announced and respected by the army command, the military said in a statement on state television. The army will continue to track this increase of violations... and fight back against these criminal acts.Foreign ministry spokesman Jihad Maqdisi said the army was committed to the truce, blaming rebels for provoking a response. The Syrian government is still completely committed to stopping military operations, Maqdisi told AFP in an email. But the violations that were committed were a consequence of attacks staged mostly by (rebel) groups that from the beginning refused the ceasefire, as shown by their official statements, he added. The Syrian authorities have informed the UN Security Council of truce violations, he said. We have documented the violations and sent messages to the UN Security Council, said Maqdisi.

2 Tibetan cousins set themselves on fire in China

Posted:

Two Tibetan cousins set fire to themselves in their village to protest Chinese rule, bringing the total number of self-immolations this week to seven, the highest since the protests began last year, a rights group said Saturday. The London-based group Free Tibet said cousins Tsepo, 20, and Tenzin, 25, called for independence for Tibet as they set themselves ablaze Thursday in front of a government building in their village in Biru county north of Lhasa, Tibets main city.Tsepo reportedly died and Tenzins condition was unknown after he was taken away by authorities, Free Tibet said.Dozens of ethnic Tibetans have set themselves on fire in heavily Tibetan regions since March 2011 to protest what activists say is Beijings heavy-handed rule in the region. Many have called for the return of the Dalai Lama, their exiled spiritual leader. The protests have intensified as Beijing nears a once-a-decade power transfer in early November. On Friday, a 24-year-old Tibetan farmer, Lhamo Tseten, died from self-immolation near a military base and a government office in Amuquhu town in Xiahe county in western Chinas Gansu province, Free Tibet said. Chinas official Xinhua News Agency reported the self-immolation of a Tibetan man by the same name, though it gave slightly different details. Xinhua said Lhamo was a 23-year-old villager and that he set himself on fire near a hospital.Later on Friday, Tsepag Kyab, 21, set fire to himself and died, also in Amuquhu town, the self-declared Tibetan government-in-exile said Saturday.Earlier reports said three other Tibetans died after setting themselves on fire in the past week in Xiahe county.Calls to local governments in the area rang unanswered Saturday.Xiahe is home to Labrang Monastery, one of the most important outside of Tibet and the site of numerous protests by monks following deadly ethnic violence in Tibet in 2008 that was the most sustained Tibetan uprising against Chinese rule in decades.Police in the region are offering a reward of $7,700 for information about planned self-immolations in a bid to stem the protests.

Exodus of thousands as Myanmar unrest toll hits 82

Posted:

Thousands of displaced people were clustered in boats and on bare ground near overcrowded camps in western Myanmar Saturday as the toll from vicious communal violence rose above 80, officials said.Seething resentment between Buddhists and Muslims erupted this week in new unrest in Rakhine state that has seen whole neighbourhoods razed and caused boatloads of people to flee from Rohingya minority areas. The latest fighting, which has prompted international warnings that the nations reforms could be under threat, has killed killed 36 women and 46 men, according to a government official who asked to remain anonymous.Altogether 82 people died and 129 people were injured, he told AFP. It was unclear how many from each community were killed.Tens of thousands of mainly Muslim Rohingya are already crammed into squalid camps around the state capital Sittwe after deadly violence in June and Rakhine state officials said the latest bloodshed had caused an influx of boats carrying around 6,000 people to the city. The local government is planning to relocate them to a suitable place. We are having problems because more people are coming, said Rakhine government spokesman Hla Thein.Authorities struggled to provide aid to the displaced, some of whom were still on boats while several thousand had docked on an island opposite Sittwe.Human Rights Watch on Saturday released satellite images showing extensive destruction of homes and other property in a predominantly Rohingya Muslim area of Kyaukpyu -- where a major pipeline to transport Myanmar gas to China begins. The images show a stark contrast between the coastal area as seen in March this year, packed with hundreds of dwellings and fringed with boats, and in the aftermath of the latest violence, where virtually all structures appear to have been wiped from the landscape.HRW said 633 buildings and 178 houseboats and barges had been torched in the area, one of seven townships affected by the latest strife. The group urged the government to protect the Rohingya, who it said were under vicious attack.Unless the authorities also start addressing the root causes of the violence, it is only likely to get worse, said HRW deputy Asia director Phil Robertson. The United Nations earlier said 3,200 had made their way towards shelters in Sittwe, with several thousand more on the way. Before night fell, boatloads of Rohingya were visible outside one camp in a coastal area on the outskirts of Sittwe, according to residents. The security forces are not allowing them to come in. Some people are on the shore and some are still on their boats, camp inhabitant Kyaw Kyaw told AFP by telephone. He added the group of several thousand people, including women and children, was believed to be from just two towns.State media reported that almost 3,000 homes and 18 religious buildings had been torched during the latest fighting, which erupted on October 21 and spread to areas that had been largely untouched by the earlier conflict.More than 170 people have been killed in the state since June, according to the uthorities, who have imposed emergency rule in an attempt to control the violence. But rights groups fear the real toll could far exceed official figures.

Sharapova, Serena ease into WTA Championships final

Posted:

Maria Sharapova set up a blockbuster WTA Championships final against Serena Williams on Saturday with a crushing 6-4, 6-2 win over world number one Victoria Azarenka.Olympic, Wimbledon and US Open champion Williams had earlier eased into Sundays title match with a 6-2, 6-1 success against an exhausted Agnieszka Radwanska in a repeat of this summers All England Club final. Not many people expected Sharapova to complete a career Grand Slam by winning the French Open on her least favoured clay court surface in June. And after losing four times out of five to Azarenka this year, a semi-final win indoors in Istanbul did not seem likely either. But the Russian designed sensibly bold tactics to frustrate the heavy-hitting Belarusian, stuck to them bravely, and executed them excellently.Perhaps also she now fancies her chances of regaining a WTA Championships title she last won in her breakthrough year back in 2004.While Radwanska had had a record-breaking three-and-a-half hour match against Sara Errani the night before, Williams had had a rest day and the statistics showed that the underdog had already run three times as far as the former champion to get to the semi-finals.Not surprisingly Radwanska had admitted that it would be an achievement just to get to the court in one piece.Serenas side-to-side ground strokes soon made it clear that she would have to cover large areas of court again and that was something which could not be repeated for long.Despite the mundane encounter, Williams was almost as thrilled as Sharapova.Waving ecstatically and fluffing up her already voluminous hair she announced that all she wanted to do now was finish 2012 with a win. That would have special meaning for her, since this has been a year in which she proved she has finally recovered from a horrific 12 months during which a blood clot in her lungs threatened her life.

Ferrer ousts Dodig to reach Valencia Open final

Posted:

Top-seeded David Ferrer reached the Valencia Open final for a fourth time after defeating Ivan Dodig of Croatia 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-1 on Saturday.Ferrer will face Alexandr Dolgopolov in Sundays final after the Ukrainian used his big serve to ease past Jurgen Melzer of Austria 6-4, 6-2 in the other semifinal. It was a complicated match, said Ferrer. He served well throughout and made it tough for me.After the fifth-ranked Ferrer controlled the opening set, the local favorite showed some strain from finishing his doubles with partner Juan Carlos Ferrero after midnight Friday.Dodig rallied to save two break points and force a second-set tiebreaker, where he converted a third set point by forcing the Spaniard into netting his volley.Ferrer grabbed a 3-1 advantage in the decisive set after Dodig double-faulted. He then hit a running approach shot to break Dodig again before serving out the win in 2 hours, 42 minutes.I tried to forget the second set. In the third set I tried to be more consistent because I knew that he was wearing down, said Ferrer. I knew that in the third I needed to be consistent because so much depended on the first serve and a break could be critical.Dolgopolov hit nine aces and broke Melzer twice in each set en route to victory. The 21st-ranked Dolgopolov will now play his fourth career final in search of his second title of the season after winning at Washington.Ferrer played another doubles later Saturday following the match between Melzer and Dolgopolov.Logically, I will be more tired, but whether I win or lose tomorrow wont depend on the doubles tonight, Ferrer said.He has a chance on Sunday to add the tournament at the City of Arts and Sciences to his five titles this season. He won here on the indoor hard-courts in 2008 and 2010 after losing the final in 2005 when the tournament was played on clay.Ferrero, a former No. 1 and Valencia native, will retire after this event.

AC Milan beats Genoa 1-0 in Serie A

Posted:

Stephan El Shaarawys sixth goal of the season on his 20th birthday handed Milan only its third win in nine matches.Milan also had two decent penalty claims turned down in an otherwise dull match at San Siro. There is still plenty to worry about for coach Massimiliano Allegri, not least in defense, which again looked shaky.Genoa remains mired in difficulty as new coach Luigi Del Neris reign got off to a miserable start. It is its fifth game without a win.Earlier, strugglers Siena and Palermo played out a dull goalless draw.

Formula One: Vettel on pole for Indian Grand Prix

Posted:

Defending world champion Sebastian Vettel completed a third successive Red Bull front row lockout on Saturday when he took pole position for Sundays Indian Grand Prix ahead of his team-mate Mark Webber. The 25-year-old German, who is seeking to become the youngest triple champion in F1 history, made an error on his first flying lap in the top-ten shootout but responded with a second effort in one minute 25.283 seconds to grab pole.It was his fifth pole of the season and the 35th of his remarkable career, but achieved without quite the luxurious advantage that he had appeared to enjoy through his domination of all three free practice sessions beforehand. His Australian partner Webber did his utmost to match him, but could only deliver 1:25.327 and took second as Red Bull proved they have the overall pace to start as clear favourites.Rivals McLaren did their best to break the Red Bull monopoly - Vettel has also won the last three races to move six points clear at the top of the drivers title race - but they ended up third and fourth.Briton Lewis Hamilton took third late in the session to jump ahead of his team-mate and compatriot Jenson Button on the grid with the two Ferraris of Spaniard Fernando Alonso and Brazilian Felipe Massa taking fifth and sixth places on the third row.Alonso, leader for a long period of the season, is now six points behind Vettel and with four races remaining needs to deliver a strong result in Sundays race at the Buddh International Circuit, if not a victory, to stay in serious contention.Kimi Raikkonen of Lotus qualified seventh ahead of Sergio Perez of Sauber, Pastor Maldonado of Williams and Nico Rosberg who was 10th for Mercedes. On another near-perfect day at the Buddh International Circuit, where the air temperature hovered around 30 degrees Celsius, Q1 saw the usual suspects struggling at the back of the field. The non-qualifiers were led by Jean-Eric Vergne of Toro Rosso who was 18th ahead of Vitaly Petrov and his Caterham team-mate Heikki Kovalainen, and Timo Glock of Marussia.Behind them and also out were the two Hispania drivers Pedro de la Rosa and local hero Indian Narain Karthikeyan, whose great effort in front of his home crowd, could not produce any greater pace from his car.Eliminated in Q2 were Romain Grosjean of Lotus, Nico Hulkenberg of Force, Bruno Senna of Williams, Michael Schumacher in the second Mercedes and Daniel Ricciardo of Toro Rosso, Paul Di Resta and Kamui Kobayashi in the second Sauber.

Action against illegal SIMs imperative; Malik

Talking to newsmen Saturday Interior Minister Rehman Malik said operation against illegal SIMs was necessity. He said the case of illegal SIMs in Sarghoda has been handed over to FIA.“It is really shocking that thousands of SIMs were issued in Sarghoda without any record,” he said, adding such SIMs are used by the terrorists.Malik said mobile phone service is blocked for the purpose of security and good results are seen due to this.“Propaganda is done against me that cell phone service is blocked because I extort money from the cell phone companies,”, adding this was very unfortunate.

Hajj in final stages as faithful stone devil

Posted:

Men, women and children from 189 countries, many of whom had saved for years to make the trip, hurled pebbles at three vast stone pillars representing Satan, shouting Allahu Akbar. They moved from one pillar to the next in groups by nationality, carrying their countries flags in order not to be separated in the sea of humanity. As pilgrims prayed after and during the stoning, others took pictures on their mobile phones of themselves next to the pillars. This was criticised by members of the security forces who said through loudspeakers: How are you people stoning Satan and taking pictures with him at the same time?Afghan pilgrim Aysha Mohammed, 77, sat down, panting. Theres a sweet feeling about getting tired during hajj which Muslims must perform at least once in their lifetime.Ever since I was a child I had dreamt of standing on the Mount of Mercy in Arafat, where the Prophet Mohammed is said to have given his last sermon, she said with a smile. They were purely spiritual moments.Security forces were heavily deployed in the stoning area and first aid teams remained on high alert at the pillars. The ritual, in the usually deserted Mina valley that comes to life only during the pilgrimage, began on Friday with the Muslim Eid al-Adha holiday as the faithful stoned the largest pillar, Jamrat al-Aqaba.Early on Saturday, plastic bags of meat were gathered and sent to camps in Mina. On Eid al-Adha -- the feast of sacrifice -- sheep are slaughtered and the meat is distributed to needy Muslims.According to the authorities, 168,000 police officers and civil defence personnel were mobilised for this years hajj.More than three million registered pilgrims are performing the rituals which end officially on Monday. Many pilgrims, however, conclude their pilgrimage on Sunday.
