Obama warns Americans to take Sandy 'very seriously'

Posted:

President Barack Obama called on Americans Sunday to take Hurricane Sandy very seriously, urging them to heed the instructions of local and state authorities. This is a serious and big storm. And my first message is to all people across the eastern seaboard, mid-Atlantic going north, you need to take this very seriously, he said.Follow the instructions of your state and local officials because they are going to be providing you with the best advice in terms of how to deal with this storm over the coming days, he said.Obama, who spoke after being briefed on the approaching storm at the headquarters of the Federal EmergencyManagement Agency, said it was a slow moving storm that would take a long time to clear and recover from.We dont yet know where its going to hit, where were going to see the biggest impacts, and thats exactly why its so important for us to respond big and respond fast as local information starts coming in, he said.

New peace bids eyed after Syria truce collapses

Posted:

Air raids, clashes and car bombings shook Syria on Sunday, killing around 100 people, monitors said, as world powers look to pick up the pieces of a failed bid to bring in a Muslim holiday ceasefire.Rebels stormed regime positions in the Damascus suburbs as air strikes pummelled opposition-held areas on the outskirts of the capital, activists and a watchdog said. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, updating an earlier toll, said a regime air raid strike in the northwestern province of Idlib killed 18 people, including eight children and five women. The four-day truce proposed by UN-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi already collapsed amid clashes, shelling and car bombings hours after it had been due to take effect with the start of Eid al-Adha holidays on Friday morning. On the eve of the official end of the ceasefire, the army blamed its failure on violations by rebels, who say they have only reacted in self defence. With hopes shattered of even a temporary halt to the 19 months of bloodshed in Syria, diplomats said Brahimi is looking ahead to new efforts to tackle the crisis. He is to go to the UN Security Council in November with new proposals to push for talks between President Bashar al-Assad and the opposition, diplomats told AFP, and will head to Russia and China this week to discuss the crisis. The political process will not start until Assad and the opposition have battered each other so much that there is no choice. They are not there yet, but Brahimi has some ideas, an envoy at the Security Council said.On the ground, rebel forces seized three military posts in the Damascus suburb of Douma amid fierce fighting and killed four soldiers at another checkpoint in the region, the Syrian Observatory said.A car bomb hit the northern Damascus district of Barzeh, wounding around 15 people and causing heavy damage, it said, while another one ripped through Sbeineh, southeast of the capital, without any casualties reported.Regime warplanes hit the nearby towns of Irbin, Zamalka and Harasta, where the military has been trying for weeks to dislodge rebel forces, the group said. They also struck a building in the Idlib provincial town of Bara, killing 16 people including seven children and five women, the Observatory said.At least 96 people were killed nationwide, including 35 soldiers, 32 rebels and 29 civilians, according to a count from the Observatory. The Britain-based Observatory relies on a countrywide network of activists, lawyers and medics in civilian and military hospitals.

12 dead in Iraq after bloody day

Posted:

Bombings in and around Baghdad killed at least 12 people on Sunday, just a day after a wave of attacks during the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha resulted in Iraqs highest death toll this month. The latest violence targeted Shiite Muslims, much like the shootings and bombings a day earlier, with the spate of attacks shattering a relative calm despite announcements by authorities that they would boost security during the four-day Eid break which began on Friday. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attacks on Sunday or those a day earlier that left 31 people dead, but Sunni militants typically look to target Shiites during Muslim holidays or Shiite commemoration ceremonies. On Sunday evening, a car bomb in the predominantly-Shiite northern Baghdad neighbourhood of Kadhimiyah killed at least 10 people and wounded 28 as they were outside celebrating Eid, officials said. One medic reported women among the wounded, and said that the nearest hospital had received six corpses as well as the body parts of at least four others killed.Earlier in the day, two bombings in the town of Madain, just southeast of the capital, killed two people and wounded 10.The attacks came a day after a dozen nationwide shootings and bombings, with the worst of the violence striking Shiite neighbourhoods in Baghdad. My children will stay at home today, said Mustafa Jalil, a resident of Sadr City, a district in northeast Baghdad that suffered the deadliest of Saturdays attacks. They are afraid to go outside because of yesterdays attack. I went out this morning, and I saw all the children from my neighbourhood were playing just outside their homes.Shiites in Iraq typically use the Eid holiday to visit relatives, the graves of dead family members or shrines of key figures in Shiite Islam across the country. In the run-up to the holiday authorities in several provinces, including Baghdad, announced tightened security, apparently to no avail. The death toll from Saturdays violence was the highest since 33 people were killed in nationwide attacks on September 30.

Del Potro beats Federer to win Swiss Indoors title

Posted:

Juan Martin del Potro took Roger Federers Swiss Indoors title on Sunday, beating the hometown favorite 6-4, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (3) in the final.Del Potro showed an impressive all-around game to help avenge a heartbreaking loss to Federer in the Olympics Games semifinals in August. It was an unbelievable final, said Del Potro, who never dropped serve and raised his level in the decisive tiebreaker. You cant wait, you have to go to (get) the victory.Federer, who won the event in five of the past six years, was seeking his 77th career title to tie John McEnroe at fourth on the Open Era list.I didnt play a good tiebreaker in the third and that was the story of the match, said Federer, offering generous praise to his opponent who won the 2009 U.S. Open then sustained a serious wrist injury. I definitely think he is right there again.Federer later pulled out of his defense of the Paris Masters, which starts Monday, to rest and prepare for the ATP World Tour Finals in London the following week. Its the only right decision for me right now, the 31-year-old Federer said. I had some niggling stuff and I didnt want to take a chance.Del Potro ended a six-match losing streak against the top-ranked Swiss this year, which included a five-set defeat at the French Open. This time it was for me, said Del Potro who improved to 3-13 lifetime against Federer. The first of those victories was in the 2009 final at Flushing Meadows. The 24-year-old Argentine won for the second straight week, after taking the Vienna title. His fourth title of the season is the 13th of his career.Del Potros victory in 2 hours, 44 minutes compared to his 4-hour, 26-minute defeat at the London Olympics the longest three-set match in history when Federer won the decider 19-17 on Centre Court, Wimbledon. As he did at Roland Garros and the Olympics, Del Potro took the first set, breaking Federers serve in the fifth game.Federer struggled briefly with his ground strokes, netting two forehands and a backhand to give Del Potro the lead. The second-seeded Del Potro relied on solid serving and unleashed blistering forehands when needed. He took his first set point chance when Federer sent a backhand wide. Both players wasted their only break chances in the second set, which hinged on a tense Federer service game at 5-5.Facing break point, Federer struck a forehand crosscourt winner then saw Del Potro slip up by netting a sliced backhand on the next point.Federer controlled the tiebreaker and punched the air when he leveled the match, as Del Potro let a backhand drift wide.Federer held three break points at 1-1 in the third, but Del Potro saved them before firing an ace to win the game.A wild Federer forehand let another break chance slip in the seventh game, which Del Potro clinched with another ace.He was playing really at the limits, and that is the way to win these matches, said Del Potro, who will likely remain No. 8 when the rankings are updated Monday.Federer then struck three straight aces when threatened at 6-5 down to force another tiebreaker.Del Potro seized his chance after Federer netted a topspin forehand, and clinched his first match-point chance on another wayward forehand from the top-seeded Swiss.

Serena beats Sharapova to win WTA Champs

Posted:

Serena Williams beat Maria Sharapova 6-4, 6-3 on Sunday to win the WTA Championships for the third time and finish the year with another title - but not the top ranking. Now that I can be honest, I really wanted to win, Williams said. I wanted it so bad but I didnt want to say it ... It was really important for me to end the year with this title in particular.Williams ended the year with a 59-4 record. Since her first-round loss at the French Open, the American is 31-1, winning Wimbledon, the Olympic gold medal and the U.S. Open. But she will finish the year ranked No. 3, behind Sharapova, because she did not pay as well in the first half of the year.I had such a good year, it was important to end on a good note. it was good for my sanity to win, Williams said. I really wanted it although I didnt need it.Victoria Azarenka, beaten by Sharapova in the semifinals, ended the year as the top-player in the world. In 2001 and 09 Williams also won the elite, year-end tournament that brings together the top eight players in the world.Williams raced forward to reach a drop shot and put away a passing-shot winner but the seventh game still went to Sharapova after five deuces. But the American was pumping her fist and there was no holding her back as Williams closed out the set with an ace - one of 11 she had in the match.Today she had another great serving day against me, said Sharapova, who never had a break point.Williams broke Sharapovas serve to start the second and was never really threatened again.Williams hit a powerful return on her first match point. She finished with 40 winners, compared to Sharapovas 13.Williams finished the tournament without dropping a set and she also beat Azarenka in round-robin play, one of her four wins against the No. 1 this year.If Im playing well and doing everything right, Its pretty difficult to beat me, without trying to sound too full of myself, Williams said. And I hate to lose. The American has won 12 straight against opponents ranked No. 1 or No. 2 and has not lost to a player ranked in the top 2 since 2007.Williams also became the oldest player, at age 31, to win the year-end championships and has seven titles this year. But because she did not play as well at the start of the year following injuries and illness, Williams will have to settle for the No. 3 ranking despite dominating the tour in the past few months.Shortly after winning Wimbledon two years ago, Williams cut her feet on glass at a restaurant, leading to a series of health problems, including being hospitalized for clots in her lungs. She also injured her ankle at the start of the year in Brisbane.Williams last finished the year as No. 1 in 2009. She has held the No. 1 ranking for a total of 123 weeks.

Lumb stars as Sixers crush Lions

Posted:

Michael Lumb struck an unbeaten 82 as Sydney Sixers overwhelmed Highveld Lions by 10 wickets with 45 balls to spare Sunday in the Champions League Twenty20 final at the Wanderers.South Africa-born Lumb and Brad Haddin (38 not out) were deceptively cautious for a few overs before giving an exhibition of 20-over batting at its best to reach 124-0 in 12.3 overs after the Lions made a paltry 121 off 20 overs.Lumb enjoyed a moment of luck -- dropped by Gulam Bodi at the boundary when on 17 -- but made the most of it to slam eight fours and five sixes and win the golden bat award for highest scorer in the tournament. The over after Lumb was dropped, skipper Haddin has his lucky escape at the boundary with the fielding culprit this time being Dwaine Pretorius, and from then on it was a question of how quickly Sixers would wrap up the victory.Fittingly, it was a four from Lumb that brought the rout to an end, leaving the Sydney franchise $2.5 million richer while Lions skipper Alviro Petersen collected a $1.3 million cheque.Lions slumped to 9-4 as Sixers surprisingly started with spinners rather than pace men and had middle-order Jean Symes (51) to thank for reaching 121 before a sell-out 25,000 crowd.Haddin, whose 43-Test career is likely to come to a halt on Monday with Matthew Wade expected to be named wicketkeeper for a November home series against South Africa, said using spinners up front was a gamble that paid off.Twenty20 cricket is all about going with your gut feel and it worked this time, he said in tribute to New Zealander Nathan McCullum (3-24) and Steve OKeefe (1-11).I captain a great group of guys who proved today that they are a pretty good cricket team. Everyone contributed to this success and our preparations for the final were spot on.Petersen could not pinpoint what went wrong with a team that did so well when defending a low total in Durban last Thursday to win a semi-final against Delhi Daredevils by 22 runs.I cannot put my finger on it -- perhaps nerves played a part -- but let us give credit to Sixers because they outplayed us in all departments. This tournament was a great experience for us.

Roach looks for Windies bounce in Bangladesh

Posted:

West Indies fast bowler Kemar Roach hopes the feelgood factor of being World Twenty20 champions will rub off on him on the tour of Bangladesh after he was overlooked for the recent triumph in Sri Lanka. The players are very confident following that success, Roach said. Its good to be around them right now. Its been very inspirational and they are talking stuff that is very useful to me.Im glad to be around them at this time -- Im always glad to be around them -- but at this time, its even better now we have had that bit of success, so we are looking to go forward now and move on from strength to strength.Roach was not a member of the World Twenty20 squad that prevailed over hosts Sri Lanka to win the tournament, the first major title West Indies have won since they lifted the ICC Champions Trophy eight years ago in England. He has however, kept himself in shape, playing matches for his club in his native Barbados.Im glad to be involved with the West Indies team again and I am hoping that some of the work I did for my club I can bring it into my bowling for West Indies on this tour.Roach is tied with three other players as the second-most successful bowler in Tests this year.He and South African seamer Vernon Philander, along with off-spinners Saeed Ajmal of Pakistan and Graeme Swann of England have all snared 39 wickets. Each of the West Indies fast bowlers scalps have come at 22.25 runs apiece in the seven Tests that he has played.Only England fast bowler Stuart Broad with 40 at 27.77 in nine Tests has more wickets.Roach prasied the work of West Indies coach Ottis Gibson in his improvement and was looking forward to reaping more success on the forthcoming tour. The coach has been doing a lot of work with me and we have had a lot of good chats about bowling. The work has paid off. Ive gotten a lot of wickets, a few man-of-the-match and man-of-the-series awards. he said. The ICC has me at No.10 in the Test rankings and I am very confident in my game right now. My aim now is to try to become the No.1 bowler in the world in the not-too-distant future.West Indies face Bangladesh in two Tests from November 13-17 at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Dhaka, and from November 21-25 at the Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium in the south-western city of Khulna. The Tests will be followed by five one-day internationals and a Twenty20 international.

2,000 sheep led through streets of Spain's capital

Posted:

Spanish shepherds led a flock of more than 2,000 sheep through central Madrid on Sunday in defense of ancient grazing, migration and droving rights threatened by urban sprawl and modern agricultural practices. Many tourists and residents were surprised to see traffic cut to allow the ovine parade to bleat its way across some of Madrids most upscale urban streets. The right to use droving routes that wind across land that was open fields and woodland before Madrid grew from a rural hamlet to the great metropolis it is today has existed since at least 1273.Every year, a handful of shepherds defend the right and, following an age-old tradition, on Sunday paid 25 maravedis coins first minted in the 11th century to city hall to use the crossing.Shepherds have a right to use 78,000 miles (125,000 kilometers) of paths for seasonal livestock migrations from cool highland pastures in summer to warmer and more protected lowland grazing in winter. The movement is called transhumance and in Spain up until recently involved close to a million animals a year, mostly sheep and cattle.Modern farming practices are however increasingly confining animals to barns, because shepherding is costly, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, which has been promoting the colorful annual Transhumance Fiesta in Madrid since 1994.Madrid became an important urban center when King Philip II chose it as the capital of his vast empire in 1561. Some paths have been used for more than 800 years and modern-day Madrid has sprawled to engulf two north-south routes. One that crosses Puerta del Sol Madrids equivalent of New Yorks Times Square dates back to 1372.Spaniards are proud of their centuries-old sheep rearing traditions and hold the native Merino breed of sheep in particular esteem. Merinos have gone on to form the backbone of important wool industries in places such as Australia and South America.

Nokia is placing a huge bet on Microsoft

Posted:

Is Microsofts new phone software going to get it back in the smartphone race? After being the top seller of cellphones in the world for 14 years, Nokia failed to meet the challenge when Apple in 2007 introduced the dazzling iPhone that caught the imagination of design-conscious customers and rattled mobile markets. The Finnish company hit a downward spiral that has led to shrinking sales and market share, plant closures, thousands of layoffs and downgrades by credit agencies to junk status. On Friday, research firm IDC said that in the July-to-September period, Nokia slid for the first time off the list of the top five smartphone makers in the world. Its still the second-largest maker of phones overall, but sales of non-smartphones are shrinking across the industry, and theres little profit there. The ailing companys CEO, Stephen Elop, sees Microsofts new Windows Phone 8 software as a chance to reverse that trend, describing it as a catalyst for the new models. On Monday, Microsoft Corp. is hosting a big launch event for the software at an arena in San Francisco. The first phones from Nokia, Samsung and HTC are expected to hit store shelves next month. The launch of Windows Phone 8 follows on the heels of Windows 8 for PCs and tablets, which Microsoft released Friday. That operating system has borrowed its look from Windows Phone, meaning Microsoft now has a unified look across PCs and phones at least if people take to Windows 8.The company has also made it easy for developers to create software that runs on both platforms with minor modifications.Analysts are calling this a make-or-break moment for Nokia.Nokia is placing a huge bet on Microsoft and if the gamble doesnt pay off, the losses can be high, said Neil Mawston from Strategy Analytics, near London. Its putting all its eggs in one basket and thats quite a high-risk strategy. In February last year, Nokia announced it was teaming up with Microsoft to replace its old Symbian and next-generation MeeGo software platforms with Windows. This move was made in the hope that it would rejuvenate the company and claw back lost ground.Eight months later, they produced the first Nokia Windows Phone. Consumers didnt warm to it, and it soon became clear that these phones, based on Windows Phone 7, were going to become obsolete. They cant be upgraded to Windows Phone 8. Lumia sales slumped to 2.9 million units in the third quarter after reaching 4 million in the previous three months.Retailers withdrew marketing and promotion because no one wants to sell customers a device that ages in a few months, says Michael Schroeder, analyst at FIM Bank Ltd. in Helsinki.Had there been a seamless transfer to Windows 8 from the old (Lumia) devices, sales figures would have been much higher last quarter.Mawston gives Nokia until April to prove its still in the race.If Nokia does not have more than 5 percent of the global smartphone market by the end of the first quarter 2013, alarm bells will be ringing, Mawston said.Analysts estimate Nokias current global smartphone market share to be some 4 percent down from 14 percent a year ago. Meanwhile, uncertainty clouds its new venture with Microsoft. Were a bit in the dark here, Schroeder said. Right now we cant really say anything about Nokias future. Everything depends on how the new devices are received in the market.Nokia says its Lumia 920 and 820 phones are just the beginning of a new range of Windows Phone 8 devices, but early evaluations suggest they lack the wow effect necessary to make a dent in the smartphone market.

Obama, Romney neck and neck in Ohio

Posted:

.49-49: Dead Heat, the Cleveland Plain Dealer front page headline blared, citing the latest poll from the Ohio News Organization Poll.Several other newspapers, including the Columbus Dispatch and the Cincinnati Enquirer, highlighted the same data on their front pages Sunday, when Romney arrives in the state for a full day of campaigning. He returns to the state Monday as well. The groups September 13-18 survey showed Obama ahead 51-46, but as in several other hot spots, the polls have tightened ahead of the November 6 election. The closely watched poll average compiled by website RealClearPolitics had Obama ahead 2.3 percentage points on Saturday, but by Sunday his advantage had slipped to 1.9 points. However, the latest Ohio news poll, of 1,015 likely voters, is not the absolute latest snapshot; it was conducted October 18-23, whereas the final presidential debate occurred October 22, meaning the bulk of the survey was done prior to that showdown. The poll showed Romneys support grew primarily among men, high school and college graduates, as well as in every age category except age 18-29.In the final days before the election, both campaigns will focus on turning out their bases, appealing to independents and attracting the few undecided voters that remain, said Eric Rademacher, of the University of Cincinnatis Institute for Policy Research, which conducted the poll.Absent any more twists and turns, a remarkable presidential campaign may end with the campaign that executes the best ground game narrowly delivering Ohio for the next president of the United States. The state is absolutely crucial for Romney; he faces fewer paths to the 270 electoral votes needed to win the White House, and no Republican has ever clinched the presidency without winning Ohio.Nearly 20 percent of the polls respondents indicated they had already voted, further confirmation of the impact of early voting on the 2012 race.
