Superstorm Sandy makes landfall in New Jersey

Posted:

Now post-tropical storm, the storm has sustained winds of 85 mph. Flights up and down the East Coast were canceled Monday and the New York Stock Exchange was closed Monday – the first time since the terrorist attacks of 9/11. The markets will remain closed on Tuesday, as well as New York City schools. The lights of Broadway also remained dark for a second straight day on Monday. The safety and security of theatergoers and employees is everyones primary concern, said Charlotte St. Martin, executive director of the Broadway League. The show will go on for Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Fallon tweeted We sent our audience home just to be safe. But we are doing our show tonight anyway. Should be fun.Parts of lower Manhattan are closed due to the possibility of an 11-foot storm surge at midnight Tuesday. Flooding is already occurring at Battery Park, located in that area. The Holland Tunnel also closed and a crane in Manhattan partially collapsed ahead of Sandys arrival.More than 1 million in New York state were without power.Approximately 248,500 were without power in New Jersey Monday afternoon, according to Gov. Chris Christie.Off the coast of North Carolina, 14 were rescued by the Coast Guard from the HMS Bounty, a 3-mast ship that was used in the movies Mutiny on the Bounty and Pirate of the Caribbean: Dead Mans Chest. The ship has sunk. Two crew members were missing. However, Claudene Christian, 42, has since been recovered and is unresponsive, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. She was choppered to a hospital in Elizabeth City, NC.Vice Admiral Robert Parker, of the Coast Guard, said on CNN that the ships crew was wearing immersion suits which keep people afloat face up and offer thermal protection. The ship began taking on water when the crew abandoned ship for life boats. However, three crew members were washed overboard and only one made it to the life boats. The Coast Guard continues to search for the final missing crew member, Robin Walbridge, 63.The NHC expects 4 to 8 inches of rain across the Mid-Atlantic states, including the Delmarva Peninsula. As many as 12 inches are possible in isolated areas. The northeastern regions of North Carolina will see rainfall totals averaging 3 to 6 inches, with isolated maximum totals of 8 inches. About 1 to 3 inches are expected from the southern tier of New York through New England. Isolated totals could reach as high as 5 inches.Snow is already starting to fall in West Virginia where 2 to 3 feet are expected, and CNN reports light flakes in Washington.Forecasters at the NHC also believe Sandy is particularly troubling because of its potential to cause life-threatening storm surges. This means normally dry areas along the East Coast could be threatened by rising water levels. The storm has stopped moving easterly and is expected to begin moving westward Monday, which will result in peak surge conditions.

Hurricane Sandy batters US East Coast

Posted:

Storm-driven waves crashed ashore and flooded seafront communities across the US East Coast on Monday as Hurricane Sandy barreled towards land amid catastrophic predictions.Officials warned that the threat to life and property was unprecedented and ordered hundreds of thousands of residents in cities and towns from New England to North Carolina to evacuate their homes and seek shelter. The storm, a deadly combination of a tropical hurricane rolling north from the Caribbean and fierce wintry winds approaching from Canada, was expected to leave tens of millions without power and tens of thousands of homes flooded.Amtrak trains up and down the coast were cancelled until Wednesday and tens of thousands of travelers were marooned in airports. The Department of Energy said 36,000 households in seven states were already without power. The most important message to the public I have right now, is please listen to what your state and local officials are saying. When they tell you to evacuate, you need to evacuate, President Barack Obama said. The New York Stock Exchange, the Nasdaq and the futures markets in Chicago were closed on Monday. Some of the worlds richest cities were effectively shut for business and the US election campaign was severely disrupted.Disaster estimator Eqecat said the storm would affect 60 million Americans, a fifth of the population, and could leave up to $20 billion (15 billion euros) in damage. The center of the category one hurricane, which had already killed at least 66 people in the Caribbean, is expected to make landfall in southern New Jersey or Delaware between 2200 GMT Monday and 0000 GMT Tuesday.Streets leading up to Atlantic Citys famed ocean-front boardwalk were flooded, and mostly deserted as the city braced for high tide. In nearby Ocean City, a section of promenade was smashed and fell into the storm surge.Television footage showed widespread flooding in coastal areas of Long Island and New Jersey and a crane partially collapsed and was left dangling precariously over a street between skyscrapers in Manhattan.Forecasters have warned that the storms effects could extend all the way from North Carolina to New England. Parts of New York and Boston were subject to evacuation orders, and Washington was rain-swept and deserted. As it approached, Sandys maximum sustained winds strengthened to 90 miles (150 kilometers) per hour. At 1900 GMT, its eye was located about 85 miles southeast of the evacuated gambling haven of Atlantic City. With just eight days until polling day, Obama cancelled an appearance in the swing state of Florida, returning to the White House to steer the relief effort while citizens watched the weather on live webcams. The election will take care of itself next week, Obama said. Right now, our number one priority is to make sure that we are saving lives... and that we respond as quickly as possible to get the economy back on track. Both the Democrat incumbent and his Republican rival Mitt Romney were keen to stay on top of public sentiment regarding the storm, given the memory of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Romney also cancelled some appearances.Former president George W. Bush was widely seen as having bungled the handling of Katrina, which devastated New Orleans. The failure of authorities in the ensuing emergency response tainted the rest of his presidency.Although Sandy lacks the sheer force of Katrina, it has a broader front and will combine with cold weather bearing down from Canada to wreak havoc in a climatic confluence of events dubbed a Perfect Storm.Obama has already signed emergency declarations to free up federal disaster funds for New York state, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maryland, the District of Columbia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island. There will undoubtedly be some deaths, Maryland governor Martin OMalley told reporters, citing the intensity of the storm and likely floods caused by the tidal surge and high waves.Forecasters warned that New York Harbor and the Long Island Sound could see seawater surges of up to 11 feet (more than three meters) above normal levels, coinciding with high tides due to the full moon. But many residents at Rockaway Beach, in the New York borough of Queens, refused to bow to official demands that they stay home. Some walked their dogs and others took photos of waves sending water across the beach boardwalk.Around 1,900 members of the National Guard have been activated and around 60,000 more are on standby, the Pentagon said, with 140 helicopters being made available in anticipation of rescue and relief efforts. The storm caused disaster at sea when the 16-person crew of a replica of the HMS Bounty, the three-mast vessel on which a famous mutiny took place in 1789, was forced to abandon ship after it started to take on water. The sailors donned cold-water survival suits and life jackets before launching in two 25-man lifeboats with canopies after getting caught up in stormy waters 90 miles southeast of Hatteras, North Carolina.Fourteen crew members were hoisted to safety but two were still missing, the coast guard said.

Syrian warplanes bombard rebels with 60 airstrikes

Posted:

Syrian warplanes launched 60 airstrikes against rebel targets around the country on Monday and conducted what activists said were the most intense air raids on the suburbs of Damascus since the uprising began 19 months ago.A government official said a car bomb killed 10 people on the outskirts of the city. TV footage showed firemen fighting the blaze amid wide destruction after parts of balconies fell on cars parked on a residential street. As smoke billowed, a woman was seen running away with children from the area of the blast and electricity cables dangled from poles. Activists said the air raids were launched both before and after the car bomb and were still under way.Monday was supposed to be the fourth and final day of a U.N.-backed cease-fire to coincide with the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, one of the holiest periods on the Muslim calendar. But the truce was violated almost as soon as it was supposed to take effect on Friday and violence continued unabated over the holiday weekend. Activists said at least 150 people were killed Sunday, a toll similar to previous daily casualty tolls. The army warned late Sunday night that it will strike remnants of terrorists with an iron fist after they repeatedly violated the cease-fire. The regime of President Bashar Assad often refers to those waging the uprising as terrorists.Mohammed Saeed, an activist based in the Damascus suburb of Douma, said there were at least 15 air raids on the suburbs early Monday. The Britain-based activist group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said warplanes carried out at least six air raids on Damascus suburbs including Rankous and Harasta. It said there are intense clashes in those areas as troops try to regain control from the rebels.Rami Abdul-Rahman, who heads the Observatory, said airstrikes on Monday were by far higher than on any other day since the conflict began in March last year.He estimated there were more than 60 airstrikes nationwide by early afternoon Monday.Members of the Free Syrian Army are shooting at the planes without succeeding in shooting them down, said Saeed referring to the main rebel group fighting Assads forces. The air raids today are unusual in their intensity, although we have seen worse days.A Syrian official said the car bomb in the Damascus suburb of Jaramana also wounded 41 people and heavily damaged shops and apartments in the area heavily inhabited by Christians and members of the Druse minority sect. The Observatory also reported clashes and shelling in other parts of the country including the northwestern province of Idlib that borders Turkey, where it said warplanes carried out 11 air raids on several villages. Amateur videos showed warplanes in the skies, then giant mushroom clouds of smoke after the missiles hit.

FA investigates claims ref abused Chelsea players

Posted:

Just as English football was slowly recovering from a divisive, year-long racism saga, the Premier League has been plunged into renewed controversy. And, yet again, the accusation being leveled is linked to racism a problem thought to have been largely eradicated from English football in the 1990s.The new allegation appears unprecedented for the worlds richest football league: Chelsea claims the referee usedinappropriate language toward two players in the globally televised Premier League match against Manchester United on Sunday.Midfielder John Obi Mikel is believed to be one of the players who Chelsea say was targeted by referee Mark Clattenburg, whose language has reportedly been interpreted as being racially offensive.Clattenburg has been backed by referees union, Prospect, which issued a statement that highlighted the wider struggle against racism.Prospect is committed to helping to eradicate racism in football and in society generally, Prospect national secretary Alan Leighton said. In the context of that commitment, Prospect is offering full support to Mark Clattenburg in relation to the allegations made against him.The program for Sundays match included Chelsea captain John Terry using his column to dedicate the fixture to the Kick It Out anti-racism campaign and pledging commitment to eradicating all forms of discrimination. But Terry wasnt available for selection for Sundays 3-2 loss to United. The defender is serving a four-match ban for racially abusing Queens Park Rangers rival Anton Ferdinand a year ago.The case only concluded last month, and the bitter fallout caused deep fractures in the English game. With Liverpool striker Luis Suarez having been banned for eight matches for also racially abusing an opponent last year, there were complaints about the leniency of Terrys punishment. Some players, including Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, the brother of Anton, refused to back a Kick It Out campaign in protest last weekend. But before Sundays match, an uneasy truce seemed to be declared between the two factions in the case.Rio Ferdinand shook hands with Chelsea defender Ashley Cole, who had staunchly backed Terry and was targeted by the United player on Twitter that led to a Football Association fine. Cole himself was later fined for criticizing the FA investigation that led to Terrys ban.Now the FA disciplinary department is busy again with the Clattenburg case. The FA has begun an investigation relating to allegations made following Sundays fixture, English footballs governing body said in a statement.Clattenburg was already the brunt of criticism on Sunday before the serious allegations emerged. He sent off Chelsea players Bransilav Ivanovic and Fernando Torres and allowed a contentious late winning goal to striker Javier Hernandez, who appeared to be offside when he scored. But for the next week at least, Clattenburg, who is one of the FIFA candidates to referee at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, wont be officiating in England.Professional Game Match Officials believe that with any football match the focus should not be on the officials but on the players and the game itself, the Premier League said in a statement. Mark Clattenburg is one of the elite referees in world football and, in these circumstances, the intense level of scrutiny would detract from the match and be unfair to the clubs and the supporters of both sides.

Hurricane Sandy damage could hit $20 billion: experts

Posted:

Disaster estimator Eqecat said Monday that damage from the massive Hurricane Sandy battering the US East Coast could hit as much as $20 billion,.Eqecat said total damage costs could run from $10 billion to $20 billion, with insured damage of $5-10 billion.Sandy is a large storm, impacting 20 percent of the US population, Tom Larsen, senior vice president, said in a statement. That put the projected damages of Sandy, which has shut down public and business activity on much of the region from North Carolina to Massachusetts, more in line with Hurricane Ike in 2008, and larger than Hurricane Irene of 2011, which caused some $10 billion in damage.Hurricane Sandy was packing maximum sustained winds of nearly 90 miles (150 kilometers) per hour Monday as it headed for the coast, the National Hurricane Center reported.Forecasters at the Miami-based NHC said the winds were intensifying as the storm began to turn towards the US mainland.Maximum sustained wins have increased to near 90 mph... with higher gusts, the center said, citing data from its Hurricane Hunter aircraft.

Oil prices drop as hurricane blasts US East Coast

Posted:

Oil prices dropped on Monday as refineries and oil terminals on the US East Coast shut down due to Hurricane Sandy, which bore down on the heavily industrial New Jersey coastline.New Yorks main contract, WTI light sweet crude for delivery in December, shed 74 cents from Fridays price to $85.54 a barrel. In London, Brent North Sea crude for December fell 11 cents to $109.44 a barrel in London morning deals. The New York Mercantile Exchange, where the WTI contract is traded, remained open despite the closure of equity and bond markets, but activity was light as traders stayed home due to the evacuation of numerous flood-threatened neighborhoods in New York City.Oil has fallen and the market is reacting to Hurricane Sandy, said Purvin and Gertz energy consultant Victor Shum.Quite a few refineries on the East Coast have reduced throughput in preparation for the hurricane to hit the US East Coast and that means crude oil consumption is going to come down, the Singapore-based analyst told AFP.Roads were mostly empty as businesses, government offices and public facilities such as schools were closed down on the heavily populated stretch from Washington to New York. Most closures were to continue through Tuesday.
