| UN council condemns suicide bombings in Syria Posted: The UN Security Council on Friday condemned in the strongest terms four deadly suicide bombings in Syrias largest city after Syria requested the condemnation. The Aleppo bombings, which killed scores of civilians, happened at about the same time Wednesday as Syrias cross-border shelling that killed five women and children in Turkey. The council on Thursday condemned the shelling, and Syrias UN ambassador asked the council to address the bombings as well.Thursdays condemnation of the shelling represented a key concession by Russia, Syrias top ally, which has vetoed three council resolutions in recent months aimed at ending a civil war that activists say has left 30,000 dead. The council overcame deep divisions before calling on the Syrian government to fully respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of its neighbors. An al-Qaida-linked group, Jebhat al-Nusra, has claimed credit for the Aleppo bombings.Syrias UN ambassador, Bashar Jaafari, called the bombings suicide terrorist attacks and said some of the bombers traveled through the Turkish-Syrian border.Guatemalas UN Ambassador Gert Rosenthal, the current Security Council president, read a council statement Friday that expressed deep sympathy and sincere condolences to the families of the victims of these heinous acts and to the people of Syria. The council also called on nations combatting terrorism to comply with international law, in particular international human rights, refugee and humanitarian law.Syrias cross-border shelling killed five women and children in Turkey. Turkey retaliated with artillery strikes that went deep into Syria.Jaafari said Thursday that his government was not seeking any escalation of violence with Turkey. He read reporters a letter he delivered to the Security Council that sent Syrias deepest condolences to the families of the victims. The letter also urged Turkey and Syrias other neighbors to act wisely, rationally and responsibly and to prevent cross-border infiltration of terrorists and insurgents.UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressed alarm at the escalating border tensions and warned Thursday that the risks of a region-wide conflict were increasing. |
| Turkey: Syria pulls back tanks from Turkish border Posted: A Turkish official says Syria has pulled tanks and other military equipment away from its border with Turkey following deadly cross-border shelling this week. The Foreign Ministry official in Ankara said on Friday that the Syrian pullback was an effort to remove any perception of threat. The official spoke on condition of anonymity in line with government regulations.Syrian officials were not available for comment.A Syrian shell struck a Turkish border town Wednesday and killed five civilians. Turkey retaliated with artillery strikes and warned Syria that it would not tolerate such a spillover again.Syrian President Bashar Assad has tried to defuse the crisis with Turkey, the worst since an uprising against him erupted 18 months ago. |
| Bahrain police, protesters clash in capital Manama Posted: Riot police in Bahrain used water cannons and tear gas on Friday to disperse hundreds of anti-government protesters trying to reach a heavily guarded site that was once the hub of their uprising. The demonstrators marched toward Pearl Square in Bahrains capital, Manama, after a funeral procession for a protester who died in custody. The government said the man died of a blood disease. An Associated Press photographer said the demonstrators hurled firebombs and rocks at troops about 700 meters (yards) from Pearl Square, where crowds gathered in February 2011 as the Arab Spring-inspired uprising erupted in the Gulf nation.Bahrains majority Shiites seek greater rights in the Sunni-ruled kingdom, which is home to the U.S. Navys 5th Fleet. At least 50 people have died in nearly 20 months of unrest.Dozens of opposition leaders have been jailed, including human rights activist Nabeel Rajab whose family said he began a hunger strike Friday.Rajab was temporarily freed from prison this week to attend his mothers funeral, but the furlough was cut short after he delivered a speech urging for protests to continue. |

| Tennis: Djokovic, Sharapova reach Beijing semis Posted: World number two Novak Djokovic raced into the last four of the China Open in straight sets on Friday as home favourite Li Na set up a testing womens semi-final with Russian tennis queen Maria Sharapova. The 25-year-old Serbian thumped Jurgen Melzer of Austria 6-1, 6-2 to maintain his unbeaten record at the Beijing tournament and continue his push to finish the year at number one in the rankings.Djokovic, behind only Roger Federer in the ATP standings, has won the China Open on the two occasions he has entered -- in 2009 and 2010 -- but missed last year because of injury. The number one seed made light work of Melzer, winning in just 53 minutes and hitting 12 aces -- four of which came in a single game.I think thats the first time, Djokovic said of his four-in-a-row. It was one of the best serving matches I have had in my career.I have stepped up at least a level in each match that I have played here, he added, stressing that he was trying to be more aggressive.Djokovic set up a semi-final clash with Germanys Florian Mayer, who beat wildcard Zhang Ze to bring the Chinese wildcards fairytale run crashing to a halt. The 22-year-old, ranked 165th in the world, made history in the last 16 when he became the first Chinese man ever to beat a top 20 player, dumping out Frances Richard Gasquet. His defeat of the Frenchman, ranked 14th, also meant Zhang was the first player from China to reach the quarter-final of an ATP event since Pan Bing made the semi-finals in Seoul in 1995.But matching Pans 17-year-old mark proved a step too far for the right-hander from Nanjing, with Mayer winning 6-3, 6-4.Third seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France defeated Russias Mikhail Youzhny 6-3, 6-2 to reach the semi-finals, where he will face Spains Feliciano Lopez, who beat American Sam Querrey 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.In the womens draw Li, Asias only Grand Slam singles winner, beat defending champion Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland 6-4, 6-2 to join Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka in the last four.Victory for world number eight Li also secured her the final place at the end-of-season WTA Championships in Istanbul later this month.I have already qualified to play in the WTA finals so what Im going to do is enjoy the match with Sharapova, said Li.Showing ominous form, French Open champion Sharapova, yet to drop a set in China, won the first set 6-0, and was 3-0 up in the second when Germanys Angelique Kerber quit the match citing an injury to her right foot. The Russian stayed on track for a re-match of this years Australian Open final, which she lost to Azarenka, who has also yet to drop a set this week. Azarenka also came out on top in their semi-final clash at the US Open.I thought we played a high level of tennis in the first set and a half, and even though the scoreline was 6-0, 3-0 there were many games that went to deuce, Sharapova said. She had a few break points and long games on her serve, the Russian added, saying Kerber was probably lacking fitness at the end of a long season.Azarenka, from Belarus, maintained her scintillating form, dismissing Romina Oprandi 6-2, 6-0.Its never easy to go in the tennis court and win the match even though the score was like this, Azarenka, 23, said.Azarenka will next play Frances Marion Bartoli after the ninth seed beat Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain 6-0, 2-6, 6-4. |

| Oil falls as US job growth fails to impress Posted: Oil fell 2 percent Friday as traders fretted that jobs arent growing fast enough in the U.S. to significantly boost demand for fuel.Benchmark oil closed down $1.83 to $89.88 per barrel in New York. The economy created 114,000 jobs in September, in line with what economists had expected. But those extra commuters might not budge the needle on gas demand, which was down 2.5 percent from a year earlier in the four weeks ended Sept. 28, according to Energy Department figures released Wednesday. That doesnt suggest really strong job growth, Gene McGillian, broker and analyst at Tradition Energy. McGillian said the report, combined with the fact that there are ample supplies of oil and low demand, drove prices lower.Oil prices were volatile toward the end of the week as traders try to gauge the strength of global oil demand while also watching developments surrounding Syria for any signs of a disruption in supplies from the Middle East. The last time oil had a three-day stretch where it gained or lost 2 percent or more each day was from June 20 to June 22.The U.S. average for gasoline rose a half-cent to $3.789 a gallon ($1 a liter). | Shoaib Akhtar blames low pay for fixing Posted: Controversial former Pakistani fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar said on Friday the cricketers are being tempted into fixing matches because they are underpaid by their board.Fixing happens in our culture because theres less money, there are even lesser opportunities. Cricketers victimised by their boards return (to the team) to mint money, Akhtar, 37, told the Headlines Today news channel. In 2008, I had no money to even buy a car. I had to borrow money from a friend. I handled it, others go astray.Your friends ditch you, (the cricket) board doesnt back you. They all run you down. So when you return you think let me teach them a lesson. Some are corrupt, but some cricketers are turned into criminals by the system.Three Pakistani stars -- Test captain Salman Butt and pacemen Mohammad Aamer and Mohammad Asif -- were jailed last year after being found guilty of spot-fixing during the 2010 Lords Test against England. It was the first time international cricketers were handed prison sentences, a scandal described by then-ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat as the worst corruption case since the Hansie Cronje episode.Former South African captain Cronje, who died in 2002, was banned from the game for life in October 2000, six months after New Delhi police accused him of taking money from a bookie during his teams Indian tour that year.We (in Pakistan) dont have much money in cricket. I wasnt playing for India you know. I was an elite star, still after playing for 14 years I only made seven-eight crore rupees ($1.35-1.54 million), said Akhtar.Akhtar, whose career was marked by allegations of drug abuse and ball-tampering, bagged 178 wickets in 46 Tests and 247 in 163 one-day internationals between 1997 and 2011.I was cleared on all drug charges, he said. |

What we have done we have regulated the movement of fertilizers --- we have also strengthened the (relevant) Punishment Act --- so administrative and all other steps are being taken.”Marc Grossman, on the occasion, said that the US recognized the sacrifices Pakistan has made in fighting terror.“Americans recognize who are victims of terrorism ---the Americans are victims but so many Pakistanis have lost their lives, so many have given their lives fighting terrorism – so this issue of counterterrorism is very important between the United States and Pakistan, “ Grossman said. |
