Kaira urges judiciary to exercise restraint

ISLAMABAD, Nov 1: Federal Minister for Information Qamar Zaman Kaira expects that the Supreme Court will avoid wading into political waters while dealing with issues of public interest, as did the US Supreme Court which upheld President Barack Obama’s healthcare law.

Talking to journalists after attending a function here on Thursday, Mr Kaira refused to comment on the SC’s decision to reduce CNG prices terming the matter subjudice. However, he advised the judiciary to exercise restraint on ‘political matters and issues of public interests’...

Ex-generals appear before NAB probe team

ISLAMABAD, Nov 1: Former railways minister and ex-chief of ISI Lt-Gen (retd) Javed Ashraf Qazi lost his temper and misbehaved with journalists outside the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) headquarters on Thursday where he and two other retired generals had gone to record their statements in a land fraud case.

The three had been summoned by NAB for their alleged involvement in leasing out 141 acres of railways land in Lahore to a private club in 2001...

Entire govt responsible for power crisis: Shaikh

ISLAMABAD, Nov 1: The government should acknowledge that it has failed to bring about any improvement in the power sector even after pouring a staggering sum of Rs 1.4 trillion, Finance Minister Abdul Hafeez Shaikh is reported to have advised the government.

On top of that, the government estimates that the power sector will consume about Rs150 billion in the coming five months to ensure a supply of about 13,000MW to offset an expected decline in hydropower generation and gas shortages...

SC freezes CNG prices till 19th

ISLAMABAD, Nov 1: Consumers will continue to get CNG at the existing reduced prices determined by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority on Oct 25 as the Supreme Court ordered on Thursday to freeze them till Nov 19.

And when the court will take up again the issue of gas pricing on Nov 19 the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) and the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) will apprise it of the measures they have taken to check the UFG (unaccounted for gas) losses...

Power sector losses increase to 45pc, NA committee told

Durand Line is international border, says US diplomat

PESHAWAR, Nov 1: A senior American diplomat in Pakistan said on Thursday the United States recognised the Durand Line as an international border and if Afghanistan had any other interpretation, “that’s certainly their business”.

“The existing border is recognised as an international border. Now if the government in Kabul has other interpretation, that’s certainly their business,” Richard E. Hoagland, US Deputy Chief of Mission in Pakistan, said at a media roundtable here...
