Obama, Romney get back to campaigning after storm

Posted:

President Barack Obama returned to full-force campaigning Thursday, ending a three-day pause to manage the federal response to the historic storm that battered the East Coast. He holds slim leads in many of the key U.S. battleground states five days before the Nov. 6 election.Polling, however, also shows Obama locked in a tie nationwide with Republican challenger Mitt Romney, who tempered his criticism of the president this week to avoid the appearance of seeking political advantage in the midst of a natural disaster. Both candidates faced a day of trying to strike the right tone in an intensely stressful race. Romney aimed at patriotism and the heartland in his first speech of the day, mentioning Boy Scouts, football, America the Beautiful and the flag.Romney also returned to criticism of Obama on economic issues, the most important in this election. The last of the closely watched monthly unemployment reports comes out Friday. Last months report said unemployment had dipped below the psychological barrier of 8 percent. At his first stop of the day in Wisconsin, Obama returned to the aftermath of the storm, saying he saw yet again that there are no Democrats or Republicans in a storm. There are just Americans. He implicitly reminded his audience of Romneys habit of making dramatic changes on issues. You know what I believe. You know where I stand. You know that Ill make tough political decisions even when they are not popular, Obama said. After all weve been through together, we cant give up now.Obama also got a boost Thursday from New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a political independent, who announced he was endorsing the president.Bloomberg said Obama would bring leadership that is critically needed to fight climate change after the East Coast devastation wrought by Hurricane Sandy.Obama spokeswoman Jennifer Psaki said the president remains focused on the storm recovery, but must resume campaigning because of the reality of Tuesdays election and the need to continue making the case for Americans to give him four more years in the White House.Obamas lead in a majority of the nine so-called battleground states could determine the outcome. Those states are neither reliably Republican nor Democratic, giving them outsized importance in the U.S. system for choosing the president. The winner is not the candidate with the most popular votes nationwide but the one who manages to accumulate at least 270 electoral votes in state-by-state contests. Those votes are determined by a combination of a states population and representation in Congress.Despite a Romney surge nationwide after the three presidential debates, polling shows Obama holding on to leads in enough of the all-important swing states most notably Ohio to win at least the necessary 270 electors. No Republican candidate for the White House has ever won the election without capturing Ohio. Both candidates are battling to win over the thin slice of the electorate that remains undecided while ensuring that their supporters go to the polls. Superstorm Sandy was bound to hurt turnout in hard-hit New Jersey and New York, but both are heavily Democratic, and it was unlikely to have a significant effect on results. Election officials were promising every effort to have polls open or direct voters to alternative locations where necessary.

Syria rebels kill 78 soldiers, attack checkpoints

Posted:

Syrian rebels killed 78 soldiers on Thursday, about half of them in attacks on military checkpoints in the north just hours after a wave of bombings hit the Damascus area, activists said. The unusually high toll for regime forces came after days of intense air bombardment of rebel positions around the country that killed hundreds more.Anti-regime activists say President Bashar Assads regime has been making even heavier use than before of airstrikes to try to win back territory rebels have captured, including the strategic northern city of Maaret al-Numan on a key supply route from the capital Damascus to the commercial hub of Aleppo. Rebels have been using the city as a base to disrupt government supplies to Aleppo, a key front in the civil war. After many rounds of failed diplomatic efforts to ease the Syrian crisis, the U.S. is making a push to unite the opposition, which is dominated by exiles widely seen as ineffective and out of touch with rebel fighters on the ground.Ahead of a crucial opposition conference in Qatar next week, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton called Wednesday for a major leadership overhaul. She suggested Washington would handpick more representative leaders, including those fighting the regime. The Obama administration and the main opposition group in exile, the Syrian National Council, have become increasingly critical of each other. The SNC says the Obama administration, unwilling to intervene militarily or arm the rebels, has failed to chart a path forward. The rebels killed 37 soldiers in attacks on three military checkpoints near the town of Saraqeb, said the Observatory. The Syrian regime rarely comments on the deaths of soldiers, and there was no official confirmation of the particularly high toll among troops for the day.The rebels fighting to topple Assad have complained they are outgunned by the military. Daily death tolls of 150 or more have now become commonplace.Activists say the relentless fighting has killed more than 36,000 people since the uprising against Assads regime began 19 months ago.On Wednesday, much of the violence focused on the rebellious suburbs of the capital Damascus and in Aleppo.Three bombs in Al-Mazzeh district late Wednesday night targeted a mosque, a sports club and a shop, state-run news agency SANA said. One person was killed in the explosion near the districts Al-Houda mosque, and two were wounded, the agency reported Thursday. Six people, including a child, were injured in the two other explosions, according to the report. The government blamed rebels.SANA said the death toll from another bombing Wednesday evening in a Damascus suburb rose to 12 after one more victim died of wounds. The bomb hit a Shiite Muslim shrine. The civil war has deepened sectarian divisions in Syria. Many of those trying to depose Assad are Sunni Muslims, while the regime is dominated by Alawites, followers of an offshoot of Shiite Islam. Many Syrians, particularly those in Damascus where fighting and demonstrations have been relatively light, fear that Islamic extremists that have fought alongside rebel units may be targeting the capital more frequently to help drive Assad out of power.Witnesses to Wednesdays blast said the assailants picked random spots to detonate explosives and stoke panic among residents.

Syrian opposition says received $40 mln in aid

Posted:

The main opposition Syrian National Council said on Thursday that it has received $40.4 million (31.1 million euros) in international aid since it was set up a year ago, half of which came from Libya.Libya has contributed $20.4 million, followed by $15 million from Qatar and $5 million from the United Arab Emirates. The SNC said $29.7 million of the funds raised since it was founded in October 2011 has been spent, with 89 percent used for rescue operations and aid for different parts of the conflict-torn country and refugees in neighbouring states. The remaining 11 percent has financed administrative services and communications, the group said in a statement which for the first time detailed the international aid it has received. As violence escalates throughout Syria, the United States has accused the SNC of failing to unite the resistance against President Bashar al-Assad beyond a small group of Syrian exiles.

Murray joins exit of the elite in Paris

Posted:

Towering Polish qualifier Jerzy Janowicz upset Andy Murray 5-7, 7-6 (7/4), 6-2 on Thursday to complete the early exit of the elite from the Paris Masters.Murray, seeded third, missed a match point as he followed second seed Novak Djokovic out the door of the Bercy arena 24 hours after the tepid Serb had been beaten by American Sam Querrey.World number one Roger Federer and injured number four Rafael Nadal did not play the event, which wraps up the ATP regular season and will decide the last two qualifiers for the eight-man World Tour Finals starting on Monday in London.Contender Janko Tipsarevic stayed in the race as he knocked out rival Juan Monaco with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win.Jo-Wilfried Tsonga can become the seventh man through if he wins his later match against Spains Nicolas Almagro, who would be eliminated from year-end consideration.Murray had never been beyond the Bercy quarter-finals and looked like having the perfect chance to fix that blemish in his record. But beanpole Janowicz upset the form book with his huge serve, which produced 22 aces and 51 winners in just under two-and-a-half hours. The 21-year-old winner claimed the biggest success of his career on his second match point and fell to the ground with his hands over his eyes lying on the court in pure joy.Murray did not want to predict how the exits of himself and Djokovic might affect their showings in London next week. The defeat means that the quarter-finals will be the first in four years at a Masters 1000 not to feature at least one of the top four players.Janowicz had beaten a pair of top 20 opponents this week in number 19 Philipp Kohlschreiber and number 15 Marin Cilic, never facing a break point in those matches.Murray came out firing against the youngsters huge serve and won the opening set on a break of serve through his opponents double-fault.But the challenger came back in the second after going down a break, putting Murray on the back foot from a pair of sloppy forehands to level at 5-5 after the Scot had served for victory while putting a forehand cross-court wide on match point. As the set went to a tiebreak, Janowicz took more initiative, winning it on a volleyed winner off a weak Murray dropshot. The Pole seized the match in the final set with two breaks of serve and a 5-1 lead before putting it away two games later.London qualifier Tomas Berdych, the Czech fifth seed, came back to defeat South African Kevin Anderson 1-6, 6-3, 6-4. Frances Michael Llodra ended an 11-match indoor win streak for Juan Martin del Potro 6-4, 6-3.

Woods says getting back to No. 1 will take time

Posted:

On the two-year anniversary of losing his No. 1 ranking, Tiger Woods said on Thursday that winning was the best way for him to get back to the top.And that could take some time.Four players have been No. 1 over the last two years. The top ranking belongs to Rory McIlroy, who has widened his lead by winning the U.S. PGA Championship and consecutive tournaments during the FedEx Cup playoffs. McIlroy was runner-up last week against a strong field in Shanghai.Rory is playing a lot of events, and so am I, toward the beginning of the year, Woods said in Singapore, where he staged a youth clinic on putting. Its about winning golf tournaments. Thats how I got to No. 1, thats how Rory got to No. 1.Youve got to win golf tournaments, and when you dont, youve got to be consistent and finish high. Im looking forward to that.Woods won three times this year on the U.S. tour, though it took time for his trademark consistency to develop. He did not have back-to-back finishes in the top 10 until the British Open (tie for third) and the Bridgestone Invitational (tie for eighth). He hasnt finished out of the top 10 since The Barclays in August, a streak of four tournaments. Woods ends his 2012 season at his World Challenge in California in the last week of November.Things are progressing nicely, Woods said. Last year I was 127th on the money list, this year I was second. So I think thats pretty good improvement in a year. And given that Im healthy, Im really looking forward to next year.He decided not to play the HSBC Champions this week in China, saying he was too tired to prepare properly. Woods will have played 24 tournaments this year, his most since 2005, which includes an unofficial event in Turkey and the Ryder Cup.Woods confirmed he will not play in January at the Tournament of Champions in Hawaii, where he last competed in 2005.That will give him six full weeks off after his World Challenge.Doing these things are easy, Woods said of the clinic at Marina Bay Sands. Competing and getting ready for another golf tournament ... I just didnt want to do that. Ive got four more rounds, which is my tournament in LA, and Im done untilAbu Dhabi next year, so Im looking forward to having this extended break. This is like my offseason now, and Im really looking forward to just getting away from it.

New estimate for economic damage from storm: $50B

Posted:

The total economic damage from Superstorm Sandy could run as high as $50 billion, according to new estimates from the forecasting firm Eqecat. That would make it the second-costliest storm in U.S. history after Hurricane Katrina. The new numbers Eqecat released Thursday are more than double the firms previous estimate.Eqecat said Sandy may have caused between $30 billion and $50 billion in total economic losses, including property damage, lost business and extra living expenses. The cost to insurance companies could run as low as $10 billion and as high as $20 billion. The firm pointed to two reasons that Sandy will leave a bigger bill than it first thought. Power outages are more widespread than in a typical Category 1 storm, Eqecat said. Sandy knocked out electricity for more homes and businesses than any other storm in history, according to the Department of Energy. The lack of subway service in New York City and blocked roadways will also push the total cost higher, Eqecat said. Before the storm hit, Eqecat had estimated that total economic losses from Sandy could range as high as $20 billion and that losses to insurance companies could reach $10 billion. Payouts for insurance claims are typically a fraction of the overall cost to the economy. If the damages run into the high end of Eqecats estimates, it would make Sandy the second-costliest U.S. storm after Katrina in 2005. Katrinas overall costs were $108 billion, which would be the equivalent of $128 billion today.Even after adjusting for inflation, the high end of Eqecats damage estimates for Sandy would be higher than those caused by previous major storms. Andrew, which struck in 1992, cost $44 billion in todays dollars, and the Ike storm of 2008 cost $32 billion.Another major firm that calculates the cost of catastrophes, RMS, is gathering information before it makes its first estimate. RMS said Thursday that it has two reconnaissance teams out surveying the damage. The firm has offices in Hoboken, New Jersey, where floodwaters stranded thousands of people.

Oil prices rise on supply constraints in Northeast

Posted:

The price of oil is rose as operations at refineries and supply terminals in the U.S. Northeast remain restricted three days after Superstorm Sandy.Benchmark oil gained 82 cents Thursday to $87.06 per barrel in afternoon trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.Power outages are hampering refineries, storage tanks and supply terminals as they work to restore operations, largely in New York and New Jersey. Imports of oil are also limited, adding to supply problems.Service stations in many cities have closed because of they cant get gasoline delivered or lack the power to pump it out of their tanks. Thats left motorists to search for stations that are open and wait in long lines to fill their tanks. Some positive U.S. economic news is also boosting oil. Reports for October showed manufacturing expanded for the second straight month, private businesses added more jobs and consumer confidence was at the highest level in nearly five years. And the government says crude inventories shrank last week. The next key report is due Friday when the government releases the October jobs data.A healthier economy can increase demand for energy products as more consumers commute to work and manufacturing facilities buy more diesel to power operations. In London, Brent crude, which is used to price international varieties of oil, fell 48 cents to $108.11 per barrel.

Bangladesh set to tour Pakistan

The boards newly-appointed Chairman Nazmul Hasan told a news conference Thursday that a decision will be finalized after discussion with the government and analyzing a number of factors including the security situation in Pakistan. No national cricket teams have toured Pakistan since an attack by militants on a bus carrying the Sri Lankan team in Lahore in March, 2009. Six police officers were killed and several members of the team were wounded in the attack.Bangladesh had been due to tour Pakistan in April, but the plan was shelved following an order by the High Court after a lawyer and a teacher petitioned for the plan to be scrapped.

PCB welcomes day-night Test matches

Pakistan Cricket Board says day-night Test matches could increase television revenue by being broadcast live during prime time. After Cricket Australia, the PCB is the second full member of the International Cricket Council to back the prospect of day-night Test matches. The ICC announced on Monday that Test-playing nations can now agree to play day-night Test matches after agreeing on the color and type of the ball to be used.Last year, the PCB organized a day-night final for its domestic four-day tournament, using an orange-coloured ball. The PCB welcomed the idea of playing Tests in the day-night format, saying in a statement on Thursday that it will increase the product value of these matches for the host boards.

Pakistan plans to send delegation to India

Posted:

Pakistan will tour India next month in their first cricket series in five years.India announced the tour featuring two Twenty20s and three one-day internationals on Thursday, and Pakistan said it planned to send a delegation to check security arrangements. The tour starts on Dec. 25.The last tour between the neighbours was a visit by Pakistan in November 2007, then cricket ties were broken after the terror attack in Mumbai in 2008 when 166 people were killed, and India blamed Pakistan. The series will be held when England takes a break for Christmas from its ongoing tour of India. England plays four tests and two Twenty20s in November-December. It returns to play five one-dayers in January.Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Zaka Ashraf labeled the series as a revival of friendship between the two subcontinent archrivals and a step forward, despite the fact it was Pakistans turn to host its neighbor. Its neither Indias series nor its Pakistans series, its a series to revive friendship, he said.Bangalore and Ahmedabad will host the Twenty20 games while Chennai, Kolkata and New Delhi will host the ODIs.There will be no match at Mumbai. We will send a delegation prior to the tour to see the security arrangements, Ashraf said.Officials of the Board of Control for Cricket in India and the PCB held at least three meetings this year in Dubai, Chennai and Malaysia to work out resuming cricket ties. Ashraf attended the Indian Premier League final in late May and met with BCCI and Indian government officials. You cant just clap with one hand, Ashraf said. Both countries needed each other to eventually strengthen the relationship and this series will be a big breakthrough.India has a big role in international cricket and Ive been trying for long for this (revival of cricketing ties with India), but obviously it takes time and required the understanding of the boards as well as the government.Ashraf also hoped that once the security situation improves in Pakistan, India will visit.I hope in future their team plays in Pakistan, if the security situation improves (in Pakistan), Ashraf said. All test teams have avoided Pakistan since gunmen attacked the Sri Lanka team convoy at Lahore in 2009. Pakistan has mainly played its home series in the United Arab Emirates.

Monkey found trying to open wine bottle

The animal was clutching the bottle outside the University of Natural Sciences in Malaysia, where he wrestled with the cork to get it open.Physics professor Mihail Nazarov said that the monkey seemed to be desperate for a drink of the 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon. He added that the hundreds of monkeys around the university campus regularly entertain the staff and students.Nazarov remarked: There are more monkeys than students here and they seem to feel relaxed, just like they are at home. The campus is situated on territory seized from the jungle, so it sometimes feel like youre visiting a zoo. The only difference is there are no enclosures.Nazarov added: I assume this monkey must have stumbled across the bottle and happened to like the smell of it.He tried for a while to open it and was eventually clever enough to pop the cork.
