Kayani hits back

ISLAMABAD, Nov 5: Riled up over onslaught of jabs against the military, Chief of the Army Staff Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani responded on Monday to the critics warning them against undermining the institutions and behaving as the sole arbiters of the national interest.

PPP and PML-N prefer to play it safe, for now

ISLAMABAD, Nov 5: Following the statements made on Monday by the Chief of Army Staff and the Chief Justice, the country’s two major political parties, PPP and the PML-N, preferred to play it safe — one gave a cautious reply when asked to comment while the other opted to keep quiet.

The office-bearers and key leaders of the ruling Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), when contacted to seek their views on the back-to-back speeches of Army Chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, which were not linked to each other and were given at two separate and unrelated events, declined to make any statement.

Wastage of funds by Balochistan authorities alleged

ISLAMABAD, Nov 5: The federation and its institutions are usually blamed for the sense of deprivation and disillusionment among the people of Balochistan and for the law and order problems in the province, but senators from the province and Planning Commission officials have identified another reason: failure and mismanagement on the part of the provincial government.

“None of the 32 federal-funded development projects worth Rs60 billion initiated in Balochistan over the past 10 years could be completed so far despite disbursement of over 80 per cent of the funds,” Planning Commission’s Infrastructure Member Ghulam Mohayuddin Marri testified before a sub-committee of the Senate Standing Committee on Finance, Planning and Economic Affairs.

Bhootani convenes assembly session

QUETTA, Nov 5: Balochistan Assembly Speaker Muhammad Aslam Bhootani has called a session of the provincial assembly in Quetta on Nov 13.

According to a spokesman for the provincial government, the speaker summoned the session at 4pm on Nov 13 on the advice of Governor Nawab Zulfiqar Ali Magsi.

Raja calls for talks to resolve differences

VIENTIANE (Laos), Nov 5: Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf on Monday said wars and conflicts bred poverty and deprivation and urged the regional countries to resolve their differences through dialogue and negotiations.

Addressing the 9th Asia-European Meeting Summit, he said: “Through talks we would be able to preserve peace and the hard-earned progress we have achieved.”

Punjab asked to follow rules in action against illegal SIMs

RAWALPINDI, Nov 5: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has asked the Punjab Home Department to follow the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) set by PTA before launching a crackdown against illegal sale of mobile phone SIMs (subscriber identity modules).

The Punjab home department had issued a directive to the divisional police chiefs across the province last month to launch a crackdown against illegal sale of mobile phone SIMs because these SIMS could be used by terrorists and criminals.

NAB starts inquiry into irregularities in FFCL

ISLAMABAD, Nov 5: The National Accountability Bureau continues its action against retired generals allegedly involved in irregularities and financial mismanagement as it started on Monday an inquiry against top officials of the Fauji Fertilisers Company Limited (FFCL).

NAB sent a letter to FFCL Chairman Lt-Gen (retd) Naeem Khalid Lohdi, asking him to submit a reply by Nov 15 to allegations that he and some other officials had paid undue visits abroad, along with their families, on the company’s expense.

Raisani claims enjoying people’s trust

Postal ballot for expatriates

ISLAMABAD, Nov 5: The overseas Pakistanis may be allowed to exercise their right to vote in the next general election through postal ballot, a senior official of the Election Commission indicated on Monday.

Election Commission’s Additional Secretary Mohammad Afzal Khan told a press briefing that the move would require legislation and a summary had already been sent to the ministry of law and justice.

In exercise of the power conferred by Clause (1) of Article 54 of the Constitution of Islamic Republic of Pakistan, the president summoned the Senate to meet on Tuesday at the Parliament House, said a notification issued by the Senate secretariat.—APP

Khalid returns as CAA chief

KARACHI, Nov 5: Air Marshal (retd) Khalid Chaudhry again took over the charge of the director-general of the Civil Aviation Authority on Monday, said a CAA press release. He was removed from the post after a Bhoja Air flight crashed near Islamabad in April. A couple of months after his removal, he was rehired as chief coordinator of mega projects, a post that did not exist at the time.

The CAA board at a meeting in September had declined to create a temporary post of chief coordinator and hire him against the post and urged the ministry of defence and the federal government to take a decision in this regard.
