Obama, Romney look for edge as campaign nears end Posted: President Barack Obama and Republican rival Mitt Romney embarked Saturday on the final stretch of their long, grinding presidential campaign, making their closing arguments in the handful of battleground states that will decide the outcome of a tight race going down to the wire.National opinion polls showed a race for the popular vote in Tuesdays election so close that only a statistically insignificant point or two separated the two rivals. Polls in the nine battleground states tightened after Obamas poor performance in the first presidential debate, on Oct. 3, and the race has stayed close since then.Yet Republicans quietly acknowledged that Romney had so far been unable to achieve the breakthroughs needed in such key swing states as Ohio, where polls show the Republican trailing by several percentage points. No Republican has ever been elected president without carrying Ohio. That leaves Romney with the tougher path to reach the required 270 electoral votes. He must win more of the nine most-contested states that are not reliably Republican or Democratic: Ohio, Florida, Virginia, North Carolina, Colorado, Nevada, Wisconsin, Iowa and New Hampshire.Under the U.S. system, the nationwide popular vote does not determine the winner. Romney and Obama are actually competing to win at least 270 electoral votes in state-by-state contests. Those electoral votes are apportioned to states based on a mix of population and representation in Congress.About 27 million Americans already have cast ballots in early voting in 34 states and Washington, D.C.Obama tended to presidential business before leaving Washington Saturday as he led a briefing at the governments disaster relief agency on the federal response to Superstorm Sandy. He said the recovery effort still has a long way to go but pledged a 120 percent effort by all those involved.Theres nothing more important than us getting this right, Obama said, keenly aware that a spot-on government response to the storm also was important to his political prospects. Then he began a three-state campaign day. After holding mostly small and mid-size rallies for much of the campaign, Obamas team is planning a series of larger events this weekend aimed at drawing big crowds in battleground states. Still, the campaign isnt expecting to draw the massive audiences Obama had in the closing days of the 2008 race, when his rallies drew more than 50,000.Obamas closing weekend also includes two joint events with former President Bill Clinton: a rally Saturday night in Virginia and an event Sunday in New Hampshire.Romney began Saturday with a morning rally on the New Hampshire seacoast. He then headed to Iowa and planned two stops in Colorado later in the day. He shifted an original plan to campaign in Nevada on Sunday in favor of a schedule likely to bring him back to Iowa, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia. His running mate Rep. Paul Ryan hit Ohio and Pennsylvania before heading to two more swing states.Obamas Saturday itinerary had him heading from Ohio to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Dubuque, Iowa, and ending the day in Bristow, Virginia. On Sunday, he was taking his campaign to New Hampshire, Florida, Colorado and Ohio. Vice President Joe Biden spent Saturday in ColoradoIn New Hampshire, Romney faulted Obama for telling supporters a day earlier that voting would be their best revengeVote for revenge? the Republican candidate asked, oozing incredulity. Let me tell you what Id like to tell you: Vote for love of country. It is time we lead America to a better place. The Republican nominee sounded the same message in Iowa and released a TV ad carrying the same message.Obama campaign spokesman Jennifer Psaki said the presidents revenge comment was nothing more than a reminder that if voters think Romneys policies are a bad deal for the middle class, then you have power, you can go to the voting booth and cast your ballot.Obama, campaigning in Ohio, countered with a final reminder that Tuesdays election is not just a choice between two candidates or two parties, its a choice between two different visions for America. The president offered himself as the candidate voters can trust, renewing his criticism of Romney for what he said were misleading ads suggesting that automakers were shifting U.S. jobs to China. You want to know that your president means what he says and says what he means, Obama told a 4,000-person crowd in northeast Ohio. And after four years as president, you know me.With Obama maintaining a slight lead in Ohio, the Romney campaign sought to make a last-minute play for Pennsylvania, a state that has traditionally voted Democratic. The Democratic candidate has won Pennsylvania in the last five presidential contests. |
Syria rebels target key airbase before opposition talks Posted: Syrian rebels said on Saturday they had launched a major assault on a northern airbase used to deploy regime air power, on the eve of a crucial meeting to decide the future of the opposition. The attack on the Taftanaz base, from where helicopter gunships raid opposition positions and rebel-held areas, comes after troops launched an unprecedented wave of air strikes this week in a bid to reverse rebel gains.A video posted on the Internet said eight battalions were taking part in the attack, including the radical Islamist Al-Nusra Front, and showed a missile launcher mounted on the back of a pick-up truck firing on regime positions. The Syrian Revolution General Commission, a network of activists on the ground, said an operation had begun to liberate the Taftanaz airbase. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based watchdog, said heavy fighting had broken out near the base in Idlib province, where rebels have seized new ground this week.Analysts said the assault came as rebel forces clearly have the momentum in the battle for Syrias northwest. The rebels gains in the north seem irreversible, said Thomas Pierret, a Syria expert at the University of Edinburghs Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies department. He said regime forces appeared to be concentrating their efforts in the region on defending embattled commercial hub Aleppo, which rebel advances in the past month have cut off from Damascus and the Mediterranean coast. The problem with this strategy is that the Aleppo garrisons are now largely isolated. It is likely they will fall in the months to come, he said. The fresh clashes came as the opposition prepared for key talks starting Sunday in Qatar, where the United States is expected to push for a new umbrella organisation to unite the countrys fractured regime opponents.Reports have emerged that Washington will press for an overhaul of the opposition and its main body, the Syrian National Council (SNC), with long-time dissident Riad Seif touted as the potential head of a new government-in-exile dubbed the Syrian National Initiative. In a statement from Amman, a group of opposition figures including Seif sought to quell concerns the overhaul is aimed at building an opposition that would be willing to negotiate with President Bashar al-Assad.Assad and his entourage leaving power is a non-negotiable precondition for any dialogue aimed at finding a non-military solution, if that is still possible, the group said after talks in the Jordanian capital. The Amman meeting also came out in support of efforts underway to put in place a unified political body for the whole of the opposition. The SNC lashed out at alleged US interference with the opposition on Friday, accusing Washington of undermining the countrys revolt and sowing the seeds of division by seeking the overhaul. |
Sudan blocks UN force from investigating deaths Posted: The international peacekeeping force in Sudans Darfur region said Saturday that its forces were blocked by the military from reaching the destination of an alleged attack that killed 10 people. The hybrid U.N. and African Union peacekeeping force, UNAMID, said in a statement that mourners brought 10 bodies reportedly killed in Fridays attack to the gate of its headquarters in Darfur on Saturday. The Sudanese military blocked its convoy from reaching the area of the alleged attack to gather information on the incident, it added.Fridays attack reportedly took place in Sigili village, located in the Shawa area in North Darfur state. Hundreds marched in a symbolic show of unity through North Darfurs capital city of el-Fasher to protest the incident on Saturday. It is not clear who was behind the killings. Sudans government has been battling rebel groups in Darfur since 2003. More than 300,000 people have been killed in the conflict since rebels took up arms against the central government, accusing it of discrimination and neglect. Violence has tapered off, but clashes continue and peacekeepers remain a target.Last month, the U.N. human rights office demanded that Sudan investigate the killing of five U.N. peacekeepers, four of whom were killed in an ambush while travelling to investigate reports of a September massacre of 70 civilians. The four dead were Nigerian peacekeepers who came under mortar and automatic weapons fire in Sudans restive West Darfur region in late October. Separately, a South African U.N. peacekeeper was killed later the same month.Meanwhile, Sudan blasted a recent renewal of U.S. sanctions, calling it harmful to Sudanese people and an attempt to obstruct fighting of poverty and unemployment. These sanctions have always been pouring in favor of rebel groups and serve to exercise more pressure on the government of Sudan... to extract more concessions on the political stands of Sudan, particularly those stands related to American hegemony in the region, a statement by Sudans Foreign Ministry said Friday. The U.S. imposed economic, trade and financial sanctions against Sudan in 1997, citing the Sudanese governments support for terrorism, including its sheltering of al-Qaida founder Osama bin Laden in Khartoum the mid-1990s.The U.S. State Department said Thursday that Washington had renewed the sanctions in large part due to ongoing conflicts in Darfur and other Sudanese states that threaten regional stability. |
Ferrer takes on Janowicz for Paris Masters title Posted: At the start of the year, Jerzy Janowicz couldnt afford to travel to the Australian Open. Now only David Ferrer in the Paris Masters final stands in the Poles way of his first major payday. Both players advanced in straight sets Saturday, but Janowiczs semifinal was the more impressive in beating the experienced Gilles Simon 6-4, 7-5 of France. Ferrer won 7-5, 6-3 against Michael Llodra after surviving an early onslaught from the Frenchman.Having lost his previous three Masters finals, Ferrer the only seeded player left in the tournament at No. 4 is under pressure against the 69th-ranked player with nothing to lose.Janowicz, who was playing in Futures tournaments at the start of the year, has beaten Philipp Kohlschreiber (ranked 19) Marin Cilic (15), Andy Murray (3) and Janko Tipsarevic (9) before topping the 20th-ranked Simon.Ten months ago, the 21-year-old Janowicz didnt have enough money and sponsorship to even get to Melbourne.I was a little bit angry because I had ranking to go to play qualifications of Australian Open, Grand Slam, one of the most important tournaments in tennis, Janowicz said after becoming the first qualifier in eight years to reach the Paris Masters final. But this gave me some kind of extra motivation. I just said to myself, Next year I will try to avoid that kind of situation.Money is unlikely to be a problem for a while. He will earn €234,865 if he loses and €479,000 for beating Ferrer, who lost twice to Rafael Nadal and once to Andy Murray in his three previous Masters finals. The superstitious Janowicz has also taken the unusual step of telling his parents to stay away.I told them its better not to change the winning style, Janowicz said. Before (this) match Im taking painkillers, so tomorrow I will do the same. Im using an old bag which is completely broken and dirty, so for sure I will use this bag tomorrow. And for sure my parents will watch my match from TV.Janowicz will bid for his first career title against Ferrer, who is tied with Roger Federer for the most tour titles this year and can move ahead of the Swiss star if he clinches his seventh of the year. After hugging Simon at the net, Janowicz let out a scream and dropped to the floor with his head in his hands after becoming the first player in 12 years to reach a final on his Masters debut.I didnt know what I was supposed to think, and I had a thousand different kind of feelings, Janowicz said. When I had match point today I felt a little bit strange. I had chicken skin (goose bumps).Janowicz, who had previously reached only one career quarterfinal, in Moscow last month, is already a star back home. The street next to my house actually is completely blocked. There is like about nine or 10 cars, TVs. There is no way to get to my house right now, he said. So I think after this final I have a chance to find some really good sponsors and I will not have to worry about the money.Poland President Bronislaw Komorowski is also a new admirer. Asked if he had been contacted by Komorowski, a smiling Janowicz said, I dont know if I can answer this question, but probably, yes.Janowicz is expected to break into the top 30 next week after beginning the year ranked 221st.Jarkko Nieminen of Finland is the only qualifier to win a tournament this year, in Sydney in January. The last player to reach a Masters final on debut was Harel Levy of Israel in 2000. He lost to Marat Safin in Toronto. Safin also beat qualifier Radek Stepanek in the Paris Masters final in 2004.Ferrer, meanwhile, saved 10 break points in the first set seven of those in his first two service games.Llodra had not lost his serve before in the tournament, but was broken three times by Ferrer the first time in the 12th game.Looking to become the first player outside the top 100 to reach a Masters final since Andrei Pavel here in 2003, Llodra started to tire late in the first set. He dumped a poor volley into the net to put himself set-point down and Ferrer clinched it with a backhand pass down the line.I played a very high level of tennis in the first set, it was very frustrating, Llodra said.He broke Llodra again with a passing shot and held for 3-0. At the changeover Llodra grimaced as a trainer rubbed his lower back for several minutes. Ferrer sealed the win when he returned Llodras drop shot with a crosscourt winner. |
Wozniacki to face Petrova in Sofia final Posted: Denmarks Caroline Wozniacki will face Russian Nadia Petrova in the final of the season-ending $750,000 Tournament of Champions at Sofias Arena Armeec hall on Sunday after both came through Saturdays semis.Top seed and former No. 1 Wozniacki defeated eighth-seeded home favourite Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria 6-4, 6-1 in one hr 33min.By making it to the final, Wozniacki also clinched an end of year top ten ranking, moving up from her current 11th spot above Marion Bartoli of France, who is not competing here. The versatile Pironkova put up a tough fight for Wozniacki early on, letting the Dane convert only one of her four break points in the first set. Wozniacki, however, took full control of the ball in the second, breaking Pironkovas serve twice and easily winning all her own service games.Second-seeded Russian Nadia Petrova defeated fourth-seeded Italian Roberta Vinci 6-7 (8/10), 6-1, 6-4 in 2hr 42min.Vincis varied rhythm with strong backhand slices surprised Petrova, resulting in a very evenly-contested first set. The Italian managed to compensate a very low rate of successful first services, 36 percent, and did not lose a service game. Petrova, however, managed to save all five of Vincis breakpoints. The Russian regained control in the second set against a visibly exhausted Vinci, breaking her service twice to romp to one set-all.Vinci got back into the match in the decider, struggling hard to win her games by saving five break points until she finally let the Russian break her in the ninth game.Vinci then missed a chance to break back and the Russian secured the match with an ace, her eighth. In reaching the final, Petrova pushes Serbias Ana Ivanovic out of 12th spot in the rankings. The Tournament of Champions featured the six highest-ranked players who have won a title during the season but did not qualify for the WTA Championships, along with two wild cards. It is the final event of the WTA calendar. |
United go top as Chelsea and City stumble Posted: Robin van Persie piled on the misery for former club Arsenal as Manchester United went top of the Premier League with a 2-1 victory at Old Trafford on Saturday.Victory in this early kick-off match saw United supplant Chelsea in first place and that is where they stayed after the European champions were held to a 1-1 draw at Swansea later Saturday.Premier League title holders Manchester City could have drawn level at the summit with United but instead were left two points adrift of their local rivals following a goalless draw away to West Ham in the days late kick-off.In Manchester, van Persie needed fewer than three minutes to put United in front before Patrice Evra doubled their lead in the 67th minute.Arsenals day got worse when midfielder Jack Wilshere, in only his second game back following a long injury lay-off, was sent off for a second bookable offence after he caught Evra on the ankle. It was a special day, in the end it was about the game and I think we played well, van Persie told Sky Sports.United manager Alex Ferguson praised van Persies all-round display by saying: I thought he was fantastic today. His movement, his penetration was fantastic.Cazorla pulled a goal back for Arsenal with virtually the last kick of the match, but by then the damage had been done and Gunners manager Arsene Wenger said afterwards: It was important not to put ourselves in trouble, which is what we did.Nigeria winger Victor Moses gave Chelsea a 61st minute lead at the Liberty Stadium with a flick-on after Gary Cahills header from an Eden Hazard corner only for Pablo Hernandez to equalise two minutes from time.It is a disappointment we werent able to finish the game off, said Chelsea manager Roberto di Matteo. At Upton Park, Manchester City were fortunate to maintain an unbeaten start to their title defence. They nearly fell behind early on when West Ham midfielder Kevin Nolan lashed a volley into the net only for his effort to be unluckily ruled out for offside. And the Londoners suffered more bad luck when another volley, this time from Israels Yossi Benayoun, hit the post before England striker Andy Carroll added to their frustrations by shooting wide.Still in the first half, Citys Mario Balotelli then wastefully volleyed over from eight yards out.We continue to miss a lot of chances in every game and this is no good, City manager Roberto Mancini, who started with three strikers in Balotelli, Carlos Tevez and Edin Dzeko, told ESPN.West Ham manager Sam Allardyce had mixed emotions, saying: We believe we scored a perfectly good goal. However, he added: When the champions are unbeaten, and you play them at home and get a draw, youve got to be happy.Belgium midfielder Marouane Fellaini scored twice as Everton replaced Tottenham Hotspur in fourth place on goal difference with a 2-2 draw at Fulham.Spurs dropped out of the Champions League positions after Wigans Ben Watson scored the only goal in a 1-0 win for the visitors at White Hart Lane.Elsewhere, Gabriel Agbonlahor scored for the first time in 29 league games as Aston Villa pulled clear of the relegation zone with a 1-0 win against a Sunderland side managed by former boss Martin ONeill.Meanwhile, Bradley Johnson headed in the only goal of the game a minute before half-time as strugglers Norwich beat Stoke 1-0 at Carrow Road. |
Hamilton secures pole at Abu Dhabi GP Posted: Lewis Hamiltons slim hopes of a second drivers championship flickered when he secured pole position for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and Formula One leader Sebastian Vettel was disqualified and forced to the back of the grid on Saturday.Hamilton, the 2008 world champion, clocked 1 minute, 40.630 seconds in his McLaren on the Yas Marina circuit, 0.348 seconds quicker than Red Bulls Mark Webber.Vettel was third fastest, but because he stopped his car on the track soon after qualifying, he was called to a meeting with race stewards. Hours later, they ruled the Red Bull driver failed to have enough fuel in his tank to be tested after the session. As a result, he was excluded from qualifying but allowed to start at the back of the grid.A similar fate befell Hamilton at the Spanish Grand Prix in May. He secured pole but the team forced him to stop the car on the track. The FIA disqualified him and made him start the race last. He finished eighth.Hamilton, last years Abu Dhabi champion, was naturally excited at his fourth pole of the season. Its the first time for a long time weve been ahead of the Red Bulls at the start of the race, he said. The team has done a fantastic job all weekend. I dont know why the car works so well here ... I guess it just suits the track.Ferraris Fernando Alonso, 13 points behind Vettel in the drivers standings with three races remaining, slumped to seventh. The Spaniard has struggled all weekend with pace, and last-minute changes by his team failed to improve the cars performance.Pastor Maldonado of Williams will start third followed by Kimi Raikkonen of Lotus and Jenson Button of McLaren.Vettels qualifying session was anything but routine even before the stewards got involved, with brake problems limiting his first session to only two laps. He also grazed the wall at one point, briefly lost control in one turn, and then stopped on the track. The German insisted he was not sure what the issue was at the end and vowed to give it his best on Sunday. One of the best ski jumpers of all times once said Every chance is an opportunity, and as far as we are concerned there are still plenty of chances tomorrow, Vettel said.Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said for reasons yet to be fully understood, 850ml of the required one litre was pumped out of the car following post-race checks. We will need to make the most of Marks strong front-row grid position and Sebastian will have a busy evening ahead of him, Horner said. |
Whatmore denies wanting rid of Pakistan captain Posted: Pakistans head coach Dav Whatmore Saturday strongly denied wanting Twenty20 captain Mohammad Hafeez replaced, branding such reports as an attempt to demoralise the team before its tour of India.Local media this week reported that Whatmore has suggested the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) should replace Hafeez, who took over as Twenty20 captain in May.I wish to clarify that I am currently not in Pakistan and have not given any interview or statement to any media. Neither have I submitted or discussed any such suggestion to the PCB, Whatmore was quoted as saying in a PCB release.Pakistan reached the semi-final of the World Twenty20 held in Sri Lanka last month but Hafeezs captaincy was criticised by former players and the media, who blamed him for making arbitrary decisions.Team-mate Abdul Razzaq also lashed out at Hafeez for dropping him from the semi-final line-up against Sri Lanka. However, PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf this week confirmed Hafeez was being retained as Twenty20 captain for the series against India.Whatmore, who coached Sri Lanka to World Cup victory in 1996, said such reports were aimed at demoralising the team. The news item is totally incorrect and based on wrong intentions. It is an attempt to demoralise the team when they are preparing for the all-important Indian tour, said Whatmore.Pakistan are due to tour India for two Twenty20 and three one-day internationals in December and January -- the first bilateral series between the two countries in five years.India stalled bilateral sporting relations with Pakistan following the 2008 terrorist attacks on Mumbai, which left 166 people dead and were blamed on militants based across the border. But after hectic efforts from Pakistan, India relented in July this year, inviting the arch-rivals to tour. New Delhi cleared the tour earlier this week. |
England call up Meaker as cover for Finn Posted: Surrey paceman Stuart Meaker has been called up into Englands squad for the tour of India as cover for injured fast bowler Steven Finn, the England and Wales Cricket Board announced Saturday.Finn suffered a thigh injury while bowling in Englands tour opener against India A and is now doubtful for the first of a four-Test series starting at Ahmedabad on November 15.However, England appear to be optimistic about the Middlesex quicks prospects as Saturdays statement said Meaker would return to the second-string England Performance Programme once Finn is available for selection.South Africa-born Meaker, whose arrival is subject to visa clearance, is uncapped at Test level but has played two one-day internationals and is capable of bowling at a lively pace, with the 23-year-old clocked at 90mph.In the short term, Finns absence could see Graham Onions and Tim Bresnan battling for the third seamer role in an attack featuring James Anderson and Stuart Broad. |
Bairstow hits ton to boost England in tour game Posted: Jonny Bairstow cracked a defiant 118 on Saturday to boost his Test hopes and help England reach 338-6 on the opening day of a three-day practice game against Mumbai A.Bairstow, who is Englands back-up wicketkeeper, struck 14 fours in 177 balls and figured in a 156-run stand for the fifth wicket with Eoin Morgan (76), rescuing the visiting side after it was struggling on 66-4 at lunch. At the close, spinning all-rounder Samit Patel was on 59 with captain Stuart Broad on 6.Little-known Mumbai pace bowler Kshemal Waingankar, who has 25 wickets in 11 previous first-class games, removed Ian Bell for 4 and opener Nick Compton for 1 to orchestrate the mini collapse in the morning. |
