Less than a week earlier, the same poll had the two candidates tied at 47 percent. But, by Sunday, Obama was ahead, 48 percent to 45 percent. If the election were held now, the new poll found that Obama would be all but assured of 249 votes, by carrying 20 states that are solidly Democratic or leaning his way — Iowa, Nevada and Pennsylvania among them — and the District of Columbia. Romney would lay claim to 206, from probable victories in 24 states that are strong Republican turf or tilt toward the GOP, including North Carolina. |

Ferrer beats Janowicz to win Paris Masters Posted: David Ferrer beat Polish qualifier Jerzy Janowicz 6-4, 6-3 to win the Paris Masters on Sunday, clinching the first Masters title of his career and a tour-leading seventh trophy of the season. The fourth-seeded Spaniard lost his three previous Masters finals twice to Rafael Nadal and once to Andy Murray but this time he didnt have a Grand Slam winner in front of him and never looked in real danger, although he did lose his serve early in the second set.I feel the pressure more than him, because I played three times in a Masters final, Ferrer said. Hes a young player. It was the first final for him, without pressure. Ferrer collapsed to the floor and held his head in his hands after securing victory on his first match point when Janowiczs two-handed backhand was wide. Ferrers seven titles this season is one more than Roger Federer, who did not defend his title in Paris.I was very nervous because it was my chance to win a first Masters title but somehow I knew it was my turn, Ferrer said. To me this is a dream to win here. If I won its because I have a great team. The 30-year-old Ferrer says he is in the best form of his career, but still thinks he is some way from matching the games top players.Maybe I won more titles than Federer, but Federer won the important titles. Federer or (Novak) Djokovic or Andy Murray, not me, he said. I will try to improve my game. The 69th-ranked Janowicz made an incredible run to the final, eliminating five top-20 ranked players in a row. But this time his mighty serve let him down.Again, I slept only four hours last night. Im not a machine. Im proud of myself, Janowicz said. This has been an incredible week. I would like to thank my family, my fans here and all my supporters back home.Janowicz, who had previously reached only one career quarterfinal, in Moscow last month, is projected to climb to 26th in the rankings. He was playing in his first final and looking to become the first qualifier to win a Masters title since Albert Portas won in Hamburg 11 years ago. The last qualifier to reach the final in Paris was Radek Stepanek in 2004.The last player to reach a Masters final on his debut was Harel Levy of Israel in 2000. He lost to Marat Safin in Toronto. Safin also beat Stepanek in the Paris final. |

Formula One: Raikkonen wins Abu Dhabi GP Posted: Kimi Raikkonen won an incident-packed Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Sunday for his first victory since returning to Formula One this year, a result which throws open the drivers championship with two races remaining.Raikkonen, the 2007 champion who drives for Lotus, overtook Red Bulls Mark Webber at the start to move into second. He took the lead on the 20th lap when McLarens Lewis Hamilton retired because of a fuel pressure problem and then avoided the half-dozen crashes and collisions that twice brought out the safety car.Raikkonen held off Ferraris Fernando Alonso, who finished second. Two-time defending champion Sebastian Vettel clawed back from last to finish third, his lead over Alonso cut to 10 points.McLarens Jenson Button finished fourth followed by Williams Pastor Maldonado.Vettel was penalized for fuel irregularities after qualifying, forcing him to start from the pits. He tops the drivers championship with 255 points, followed by Alonso at 245 and Raikkonen at 198.Red Bull leads the constructors championship with 422 points, followed by Ferrari on 340 and McLaren 318.Im very happy for the team and myself but mainly for the team, said Raikkonen, who last won a race in 2009 with Ferrari at the Belgian GP. Its been a hard season for the team. Hopefully, this gives us more belief, not just for those are doing the work but those who run the team.Alonso, who struggled for pace across the weekend, said he is thrilled to have repeated his second place from the Indian GP after also starting down the grid in that race.Im very happy. We were not so competitive this weekend and we started sixth with Sebastians penalty, Alonso said.We had to fight from the first lap, some good overtaking. Then, we had a very good strategy that gave us the ability to fight until the end of for the victory. In the last couple of laps, Kimi was little slow and we attacked. Second was the maximum. We will keep fighting until the end.Vettel said he always believed he would end up on the podium.I said to myself either we go full attack or nothing, Vettel said. That is what we did. We had a fantastic race.On a circuit some drivers have called boring, the incidents started on the opening lap. Force Indias Nico Hulkenberg collided with Williams Bruno Senna and exited the race. Eight laps later, Mercedes Nico Rosberg ran into the back of Narain Karthikeyan and went flying over the HRT car to crash into a wall.Starting from back of the field, Vettel was in the middle of many of the mishaps during the race and responsible for a few of them.Moving quickly through the pack, he damaged his wing when he clipped Senna. He then misjudged the pace of Daniel Ricciardos car in front and ran over a board prompting him to curse Ricciardo over his team radio and requiring a visit to the pits to get a new wing, forcing him down to 21st.Vettel returned and again aggressively started overtaking, going off the track to pass Romain Grosjean and then colliding with Felipe Massa, causing the Ferrari drivers car to spin.Despite all that, he moved up to fourth and then overtook Button with three laps remaining. It was nice fight with Jenson (Button). He was difficult to pass. With him, I was really struggling. I just squeezed my way past, Vettel said. It was thrilling grand prix up and down all the time.Hamiltons earlier departure ends his bid for a second title as it did for Vettels teammate, Mark Webber, who pitted at one point to allow the German to move ahead of him into fourth. The Australians race ended in the 39th lap when he collided with Grosjean, who had stalled after crashing into Saubers Sergio Perez.Im gutted, Hamilton said. Id had really good pace all weekend and I feel certain we could have won today. I had a fuel pressure problem it was very sudden, I was just entering a corner and the car just died on me ... nonetheless, well have more opportunities in Austin and Sao Paulo. I hope we can get back to the front - Id love to take a win or two more for Vodafone McLaren Mercedes before the end of the season. |
Suarez's goal gives Liverpool draw with Newcastle Posted: Often slated for his theatrics, Luis Suarez stood out for the right reasons Sunday with a brilliant equalizer for Liverpool in a 1-1 draw with Newcastle in the Premier League.Steven Gerrard made his 600th appearance for Liverpool but was overshadowed at Anfield by Suarez, who produced a wonderful piece of skill to bring down a raking pass on his chest and round the goalkeeper in one movement to earn his team a deserved point in the 67th minute. His first touch from that height was an incredible piece of skill he is a world-class striker, said Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers.Liverpool, however, missed a chance to climb into the top half of the standings for the first time this season, with the 18-time English champions again failing to win at home despite dominating for large periods.Newcastle scored from one of its rare forays forward, with Yohan Cabaye volleying home superbly in the 43rd after good work by Hatem Ben Arfa, and was forced to hang on with 10 men after Fabricio Coloccini was red-carded six minutes from time.Suarez is a great player. He was causing us problems and if we could have wrapped him up, we would have won the game, Newcastle manager Alan Pardew said.In the other game, Queens Park Rangers and Reading remain winless in the league after 10 games after drawing 1-1 at Loftus Road, leaving both teams in the bottom three and destined for season of struggle.Former France striker Djibril Cisse rescued a point for the hosts by poking home a close-range finish in the 66th, canceling out an acrobatic opener scored by Kaspars Gorkss a former QPR player. The point provisionally lifts QPR off the bottom of the table above Southampton, which plays on Monday against West Bromwich Albion, but the result will increase the pressure on manager Mark Hughes. |
