20 personnel kidnapped, two killed in raid on posts

PESHAWAR, Dec 27: At least 20 personnel of Levies force were kidnapped by suspected militants on Thursday after an attack on check-posts in Frontier Region Peshawar during which two members of the militia were killed and another suffered injuries.

ISLAMABAD, Dec 27: The government has kept secret a ‘strongly worded’ letter of the United Nations written in reaction to Pakistan’s response to the UN inquiry report on Benazir Bhutto assassination, according to informed sources.

Balochistan by-election: No female staff sent for women voters

ISLAMABAD, Dec 27: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has conceded that no female staff had been appointed for any polling station set up for the by-election held recently for a seat of Balochistan Assembly.

Provincial Election Commissioner Sultan Bayadid told Dawn that there was no `women-only’ polling stations, but claimed that separate booths for women voters had been made in all the 67 polling stations set up for the by-election held on Monday in the Sherani-cum-Zhob (PB-18) constituency. But those booths, he added, were manned by the male staff as female staff could not be arranged in the newly formed district...

Verification of Karachi voters from Jan 10

ISLAMABAD, Dec 27: The schedule for carrying out verification of voters in Karachi has been delayed and now the exercise is expected to be completed two weeks ahead of the expiry of the assemblies’ term on March 16.

Informed sources said the move followed a significant change made by the Election Commission of Pakistan in the format of the form to be prepared by the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) for the verifying officers...
