ECP assured of full army cooperation

ISLAMABAD, Dec 27: After holding detailed discussions with Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani on Wednesday on matters relating to general elections, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Justice (retd) Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim made two significant points.

He categorically stated that elections would be held on time and in a free, fair and transparent manner, quashing the rumours that the establishment was interested in getting the polls delayed.

PML-N wants governors changed before polls

ISLAMABAD, Dec 26: The main opposition Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) wants to see all the four governors changed before the next general election, Leader of Opposition in National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said on Wednesday.

“The PML-N will formally put its demand before the government to change all the governors, including the newly-appointed Punjab governor, at the time of the elections,” he said in a statement issued a day after Makhdoom Ahmed Mehmood took oath as Punjab governor.

LARKANA / SUKKUR, Dec 26: Amid speculations on the eve of the death anniversary of Benazir Bhutto that President Asif Ali Zardari, who is co-chairman of the PPP, may hand over the party’s leadership to his son Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira said on Wednesday that it would be an important day for the party and the country as another Bhutto was starting his political career.

Talking to reporters at Sukkur Press Club, he said the journey started by the late Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and continued by Benazir Bhutto for strengthening the country was full of crises, problems and sacrifices.

A trial without an end

ISLAMABAD, Dec 26: Repeated and unending investigations, indifferent lawyers, a chaotic judicial system and a government that really didn’t care have all ensured that Benazir Bhutto murder trial is going nowhere.

Five different judges have headed the trial and the prosecution has filed eight separate challans since the proceeding started on February 29, 2008, which have also added to the delay as have the investigations by two different investigation teams.

Govt issues civil service guidelines

ISLAMABAD, Dec 26: With the promotion of 33 officers to the highest BPS-22 on Wednesday, Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf also approved comprehensive guidelines for streamlining the civil service.

An official memorandum issued to this effect referred to the Dec 12 Supreme Court judgment on a petition filed by an official, Anita Turab, for protection of civil servants after a PPP candidate, Waheeda Shah, was caught on camera slapping a member of the polling staff during a by-election in Tando Mohammad Khan in March. In April 2010, the SC had demoted 54 federal secretaries promoted by then prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani in violation of rules and asked the government to re-frame promotion rules.

Ogra proposes big hike in CNG price

ISLAMABAD, Dec 26: With the Farooq Naek committee unclear about resolution of crisis over price of compressed natural gas (CNG), the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) on Wednesday came up with three options that could increase consumer-end price of the fuel by up to Rs59 per kg (96 per cent) to maintain the 80 per cent parity with petrol proposed by petroleum ministry.

After the second meeting of the committee appointed by the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the cabinet and led by Law Minister Naek, CNG sector’s representative Ghiyas Abdullah Paracha said the CNG station owners would be ‘constrained’ to involve the consumers and launch a protest if the dispute was not resolved by Dec 31.

Veteran Jamaat leader Prof Ghafoor passes away

KARACHI, Dec 26: Veteran politician and Naib Amir of Jamaat-i-Islami Prof Ghafoor Ahmad died here on Wednesday evening after a protracted illness. He was 85 and leaves behind three sons and six daughters.

His funeral prayer will be offered at the party’s Karachi office Idara Noor-i-Haq on Thursday at about 4.30pm. He will be laid to rest in Sakhi Hasan graveyard.
