ECP’s majority decision knocks out Justice Zahid: Khoso takes oath today

ISLAMABAD, March 24: There was a tie on Saturday, but a majority decision on Sunday. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) finally picked retired Justice Mir Hazar Khan Khoso as caretaker prime minister by a 4-1 majority.

Raja leaves Prime Minister House

ISLAMABAD, March 24: Soon after the announcement about retired Justice Mir Hazar Khan Khoso having been selected as the caretaker prime minister by the Election Commission of Pakistan, Premier Raja Pervez Ashraf left the PM House. He was given a farewell guard of honour.

“I have tried to discharge my responsibilities to the best of my abilities as the chief executive of the country,” Mr Ashraf said.

Musharraf lands in Karachi, alleges conspiracy

KARACHI, March 24: Retired Gen Pervez Musharraf returned home on Sunday after about four years of self-exile only to find that his expectations about a rousing welcome were not quite realistic.

An Emirates airline flight carried Gen Musharraf and a corps of local and foreign media personnel and leaders of his All Pakistan Muslim League from Dubai and landed at about 12:55pm at the Quaid-i-Azam International Airport.

As Mengal lands, pressure builds to boycott elections

PTI, JI form committees for seat adjustment

LAHORE, March 24: The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) and Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) constituted committees at the central and provincial levels on Sunday to decide within four days about seat adjustment in various constituencies for the coming elections.

The decision came after a JI delegation led by Syed Munawar Hasan met PTI chief Imran Khan at his residence in Zaman Park.

Checkpost suicide attack death toll rises to 17

MIRAMSHAH, March 24: The death toll from Saturday evening’s suicide attack at a checkpost in the North Waziristan tribal region jumped to 17 on Sunday with more than 40 others injured.

Sources said the suicide attacker rammed his explosive-laden tanker into the Esha checkpost, around 15km east of Miramshah, the main city of North Waziristan. The checkpost is jointly manned by the army, paramilitary soldiers and the Khasadar personnel.

Police vans fired upon in Kashmir; civilian dead

SRINAGAR, March 24: A civilian was killed and a policeman injured on Sunday when militants opened fire at two police vehicles caught in a traffic jam at Sopore town in India-held Kashmir.

Abdul Rashid Dar, a resident of Rafiabad in Sopore, who was critically injured in the attack at Iqbal Market, later succumbed to injuries, a police officer said.
