Musharraf told to appear before Supreme Court today

Number of nomination papers up by over 3,000

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) surprised many by revealing that the number of nomination papers filed by candidates had increased by over 3,000 on Monday, a day after completion of the scrutiny process.

The ECP on Saturday announced that it had received 24,094 nomination papers from returning officers by April 6, which had been sent back after preliminary verification by the agencies concerned on Sunday, the last day for scrutiny of papers.

LHC asks ECP to shed light on scrutiny process

LAHORE, April 8: The Lahore High Court on Monday directed the Election Commission (ECP) to apprise it about the mechanism, material or information utilised by returning officers while rejecting and accepting nomination papers of election candidates in Punjab.

Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah also sought details of appointments made by the federal and Punjab governments after the ban imposed by the ECP on Jan 22.

Mengal urges ECP to provide security

QUETTA: Sardar Akhtar Mengal, chief of the Balochistan National Party-Mengal, has urged the chief election commissioner to take notice of threats faced by his party’s workers in various areas of the province and said their free movement is necessary for transparent polls.

Speaking at a press conference here on Monday, he said it was the responsibility of the chief election commissioner to ensure protection of the workers so that they could participate in the election campaign without any hurdle.

EU election observers not to visit Balochistan, Fata

ISLAMABAD, April 8: The European Union’s Election Observation Mission (EOM) said here on Monday it would monitor polls in Sindh, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Islamabad, but would not send its teams to Balochistan and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) because of security concerns.

An official of the commission told Dawn on condition of anonymity that there were serious concerns about the safety of its officials and neither the interior ministry would give a security clearance nor did they intend to visit the restive province and the tribal region.

Security forces suffer heavy casualties in Tirah battle

PESHAWAR, April 8: With the nation focused on next month’s electoral battle, security forces have taken their heaviest toll in one of the bloodiest and most difficult operations in Tirah Valley, according to security officials.

They said heavy fighting had been raging in the mountainous tribal region bordering Afghanistan since the launch of an unannounced military operation in the valley on Friday. Security forces have come up against stiff resistance from militants affiliated with the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TPP).

LONDON, April 8: Margaret Thatcher, the ‘Iron Lady’ who transformed Britain and inspired conservatives around the world by radically rolling back the state during her 11 years in power, died on Monday following a stroke. She was 87.

Britain’s only woman prime minister, the unyielding, outspoken Mrs Thatcher led the Conservative Party to three election victories, governing from 1979 to 1990, the longest continuous period in office by a British premier since the early 19th century.

IHC stops FBR chief from working

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday restrained Ali Arshad Hakeem from working as chairman of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and suspended the notification for his appointment to the post.

The notification was issued by the establishment division on July 10 last year. Mr Hakeem was previously chairman of the National Database and Registration Authority.

Some forces out to get polls put off, says Yaqoob

DAMMAM, April 8: Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) President Sardar Mohammad Yaqoob Khan disclosed on Monday that there were forces in Pakistan and abroad striving to get the general elections deferred.

Addressing a gathering of Pakistani expatriates over a lunch, the AJK leader emphasised that every effort should be made to ensure that elections were held as scheduled, adding that polls were required for the country’s growth and prosperity.

Voting abroad to hurt credibility of elections, argues ECP

ISLAMABAD, April 8: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has informed the Supreme Court that making in haste arrangements for voting by overseas Pakistanis could affect the credibility of the coming general elections.

In a report submitted to the court, the ECP observed that it was not advisable to go for the exercise based on an “untested computer system”. It also stressed that necessary legal backing providing for proper procedure for voting by the Pakistanis abroad was required.
