The chief justice’s action on Saturday was prompted by a note moved by the registrar of the apex court highlighting the sanction of security cover and other privileges to a number of former prime ministers, former interior minister Rehman Malik, chief ministers as well as the speaker and deputy speaker of the Sindh Assembly.

Blast in Peshawar leaves nine dead

PESHAWAR, April 13: Nine people were killed and 10 others injured when a van carrying passengers was blown up near Peshawar’s Mattani Bazaar on Saturday.

The van was going from the Scheme Chowk to Sharikera, an outlying village. The van used to run daily on that route.

Musharraf wants all judges except CJ to hear case

ISLAMABAD, April 13: Former military ruler Pervez Musharraf, who is facing the threat of a trial for treason, requested the Supreme Court on Saturday to constitute a full court bench comprising all its judges except Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, for hearing his case.

The court office, however, returned the miscellaneous application in the afternoon, saying it was not clear for which purpose it had been filed.

LAHORE: Early one April morning, a couple of young political workers approach a jogger at the Model Town Park. They ask her who she is going to vote for on May 11. “Shahbaz Sharif. Thanks to his underpass, it takes me just 15 minutes to get to the Liberty from my house.”

A not too brief conversation follows in which the political workers reason with the Shahbaz voter why she should try something different for a change — the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf. No manifesto is discussed. There is no mention of Imran Khan’s six promises at a recent public meeting. Khan, as his followers affectionately call him, is change personified.

Armed struggle termed premature: Mengal sees attempts to oust BNP from emocratic process

QUETTA, April 13: President of the Balochistan National Party-Mengal (BNP-M), Sardar Akhtar Mengal, has apprised Governor Zulfiqar Ali Magsi about difficulties being faced by his party’s candidates in launching their election campaigns and said the establishment wanted to keep the party away from the polls.

Later, talking to the media, he said a party representing secessionists was creating hurdles in the BNP-M’s democratic struggle for rights and added: “Presently the situation is not conducive for achieving [Baloch] national rights through armed struggle.”

Polls office destroyed in Miramshah bomb blast

MIRAMSHAH, April 13: Militants blew up the election office of an independent candidate in the North Waziristan tribal region on Saturday, adding to security fears ahead of the polls next month.

No one was hurt in the bombing in Miramshah, a known hub of the militants.

Army to guard printing of ballot papers

ISLAMABAD, April 13: Soldiers of the Army were posted on Saturday night at the facilities where printing of ballot papers is due to start next week in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad.

Sources said 120 million ballot papers would be printed by the Printing Corporation and 60m by the Security Printing Corporation under the supervision of the Election Commission (ECP).

ECP wants action on media directive

ISLAMABAD, April 13: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has asked regulators of electronic and print media to ensure compliance of its directive requiring media houses to provide details of political advertisements aired and published by them.

The commission had issued the directive on March 26 seeking details of all paid and unpaid political advertisements and other broadcasts and publications containing the name, election symbol or photograph of candidates or leaders of political parties.
