Suicide raid, car bombs kill 34 civilians in Mogadishu Posted: MOGADISHU (AFP) - A nine-man suicide commando blasted its way into Mogadishus main court complex Sunday, some blowing up their explosives vests while others sprayed gunfire in a rampage that left 29 civilians dead, while a separate bomb attack killed five more. The Al-Qaeda-linked Shebab militant group claimed responsibility for the courthouse attack, which the countrys chief justice escaped unharmed on the worst day of violence the city has seen in months. The African Union force, the Somalia national army and local police have cleared the building. The latest figures indicate that there are 29 killed civilians, nine dead Shebab militants and 58 people injured, a security officer told AFP on condition of anonymity.Interior Minister Abdikarin Hussein Guled said all the attackers were killed in the courthouse raid. Six detonated themselves, and three were shot dead by security forces, he told reporters, adding that the government had regained control of the situation.Shebab spokesman Sheikh Ali Mohamed Rage claimed only five suicide attackers died in the fighting at the court complex, and vowed there would be fresh attacks. This was a holy action which targeted non-believers who were in a meeting within the court complex. We will continue until Somalia is liberated from invaders, he told AFP.The Islamist Shebab militants used to control most of the seaside capital until it abandoned fixed positions in August 2011 but it has since carried out a string of attacks against the UN-backed government. After Somali forces eventually ended the raid, during which a car bomb also exploded, chaos still engulfed the area and an AFP reporter saw medics evacuating wounded through the courthouses shattered windows. Some of the terrorists are still inside the court building and they are wearing explosive vests, Fadumo Ali, a civilian trapped inside the building, told AFP during the raid from a mobile phone. As the drama inside the court complex was unfolding, five people were killed when a remote-detonated car bomb near the airport struck a convoy carrying Turkish aid.Five people, two of them women who were passing by the area were killed in the car bomb attack, Hassan Moalim, who witnessed the attack, told AFP.He said two of the bodies were charred beyond recognition. An official from the Turkish Red Crescent confirmed to Turkish news television channel NTV that the organisation suffered casualties. We unfortunately lost our Somali driver in the blast, said Ahmet Lutfi Akar, the head of the Turkish Red Crescent. Three Turks were also mildly injured but they are in hospital now and doing well.
Kerry hopes next Palestinian PM can work with US Posted: TOKYO (AP) - U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said Sunday he hoped the Palestinians pick a new prime minister who can work with the United States and establish confidence so that Mideast peace can advance.Speaking to journalists in Tokyo, Kerry praised Salaam Fayyad, who until resigning Saturday as prime minister was seen as one of the Palestinians most moderate and respected figures. Kerry called Fayyad a good friend who made a big difference for Palestinians.Fayyads resignation comes as Kerry is working to revive the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. An important part of his strategy is developing the Palestinian economy and state institutions so the Palestinians can be a viable partner in any peace deal with Israel. The United States had expected Fayyad to play a significant role in that effort. But the 61-year-old political independent and Western-trained economist had clashed with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas over the extent of the prime ministers power. Were totally committed to moving forward with the economic thing no matter what, Kerry said, citing U.S. business partners including Coca-Cola. The West Bank is there, Palestinian aspirations are there, the government is there. And in order to be a viable government, theres got to be more than one person that you can do business with.So we will continue to work at this and hope that President Abbas finds the right person to work with him in a transition, and work with us, to establish confidence, he added. Everybody is going to want somebody who provides confidence.Kerry said he preferred that Fayyad stay on the job, but that he understood Fayyads decision.Hes been sick, hes tired, hes been at this seven years. He has kids in school. Hes anxious to carve his own path here and I respect that, Kerry said. But hes going to be there for a while. I had a long conversation with him. Hes resigned and he accepted his resignation. But theres going to be a caretaker process for some period of time and hes not going to go away from Palestinian politics completely if at all.
North Korea rejects South Korea's calls for talks Posted: PYONGYANG (AP) - North Korea on Sunday rebuffed a South Korean proposal to resolve rising tensions through dialogue, dismissing it as a crafty trick by its rival.Tensions have been high on the Korean Peninsula for weeks, with Pyongyang threatening to attack Seoul and Washington for conducting joint military drills and for supporting U.N. sanctions imposed on North Korea for a February nuclear test. While the threats are largely seen as rhetoric, U.S. and South Korean officials have said they believe North Korea may test-fire a mid-range missile designed to reach the U.S. territory of Guam.Pyongyang also took a direct shot at Seoul by pulling more than 50,000 North Korean workers from their joint factory park in the border city of Kaesong and denying South Koreans access to the complex just north of the Demilitarized Zone. The move has brought the South Korean-run factories to a standstill, threatening a shutdown of the last joint project left between the two Koreas.Last Thursday, Seoul pressed Pyongyang to discuss restarting operations at the factory park. South Korean President Park Geun-hye has promoted seeking peace with North Korea, a change in policy from the hard-line stance of her predecessor, Lee Myung-bak.But on Sunday, North Koreas Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of Korea said Pyongyang has no intention of talking with Seoul unless it abandons its confrontational posture.South Koreas presidential Blue House said North Koreas rebuttal of its dialogue offer was very regrettable. A Blue House statement urged North Korea to take responsible measures to help relieve difficulties facing South Koreans working at the joint factory park. The two Koreas technically remain at war because their 1950-53 conflict ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty. The U.S. keeps about 28,500 troops in South Korea to help deter potential aggression by the North.
Air strike kills 16 in northeast Syria village: watchdog Posted: BEIRUT (AFP) - An air strike killed at least 16 people in a majority Kurdish village in the northeastern Syrian province of Hasakeh on Sunday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights watchdog said.Sixteen people were martyred after a warplane targeted the village of Haddad, which is majority Kurdish... including at least three children and two women, the Britain-based group reported.Video footage uploaded by activists on YouTube showed the aftermath of an initial attack, with women and children screaming as they rushed out of a badly damaged house. As men arrived to help carry the injured, the sound of another explosion can be heard and dust rises up around the building.Several women carrying children emerge from one home, outside which at least two bodies can be seen, at least one apparently that of a child, a pool of blood next to his head.In northern Syria, the Kurdish population has largely observed a careful compromise with regime and rebel forces, fighting alongside neither, in return for security and semi-autonomy over majority Kurdish areas. But there have been reports in recent weeks of Kurdish fighters joining the battle with Syrian rebels in certain areas, including the Kurdish Sheikh Maqsud district of Aleppo.Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP that a group of rebels used an area near the site of Sundays attack as a gathering place, but that the raid had targeted a group of houses belonging to villagers some distance away.
Attacks kill 10 people in Iraq Posted: BAGHDAD (AP) - A series of attacks in Iraq on Sunday killed 10 people, including a Sunni candidate running in the upcoming provincial elections. The attacks against security forces and a provincial election candidate came as the country is preparing for the first vote since the U.S. withdrawal. In the April 20 elections, Iraqis are to choose provincial governing councils. The most serious attack came at night near the northern city of Mosul, when a booby-trapped body exploded among a group of policemen, who were trying to inspect the body that was left in the street. Police said that five policemen were killed.Hours earlier, police said that Najam Saeed, a Sunni candidate in the provincial elections, was killed when a roadside bomb hit his convoy near Muqadiyah town, 90 kilometers (55 miles) north of Baghdad. The blast was followed by shooting between gunmen and the candidates bodyguards. Two of Saeeds brothers were killed, and the candidates son and three bodyguards were wounded in the attack. At least 13 other candidates have been killed in previous attacks ahead of the election. In the western city of Fallujah, police said a roadside bomb hit a police patrol in the western city of Fallujah, killing two security officers.Medics in a nearby hospital confirmed the casualties. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to reporters.Violence has ebbed in Iraq since the peak of Sunni-Shiite fighting that pushed the country to the brink of civil war in 2006 and 2007, but insurgent attacks are still frequent in attempts to undermine the Shiite-led government.

Man City beat Chelsea 2-1 to reach FA Cup final Posted: LONDON (AP) - Manchester City reached the FA Cup final by beating defending champion Chelsea 2-1 in a free-flowing game at Wembley on Sunday to maintain its only remaining hope for a trophy this season.City dominated much of the first hour and went 2-0 up through goals by Samir Nasri and Sergio Aguero, before Demba Ba pulled Chelsea back into the game with an acrobatic finish in the 66th.That led to a nervous finish for City, but Ba wasted his teams best chance to equalize when he fired straight at goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon from close range minutes later.City will be a huge favorite in the final against Wigan, which beat Millwall 2-0 on Saturday, as manager Roberto Mancini looks to win the competition for the second time in three years. Chelsea beat Liverpool in last years final but its only hope for a trophy is now in the Europa League, where it has reached the semifinals.A day after Wigans victory was marred by Millwall fans fighting in the stands at Wembley, City and Chelsea combined to put the focus firmly back on football as they produced an entertaining end-to-end game played at a relentless pace.City dominated the first 20 minutes as Yaya Toures surging runs repeatedly caused problems for Chelsea, although Aguero and Carlos Tevez both failed to test Petr Cech with shots from tight angles. The goalkeeper had to make his first save in the sixth minute, diving quickly to push the ball away as Gareth Barrys cross-shot was poked toward the goal by Toure.Chelseas first chance came in the 23rd, when an inswinging free kick was only cleared out to Eden Hazard, whose bouncing shot from outside the area went over Pantilimon but was cleared off the line by Vincent Kompany. Mancini maintained his policy of playing Pantilimon in the cup competition, with Joe Hart on the bench. The opening goal in the 35th was set up by another run by Toure, who found Aguero free in the area. The Argentine laid off to Nasri, who tried to play a 1-2 with Aguero, only for the ball to ricochet back to the Frenchman off Cesar Azpilicueta and he calmly slotted it past Cech.Chelsea nearly replied immediately when Oscar laid the ball off to Juan Mata, but his shot from the edge of the area sailed just wide.City could easily have been ahead by a bigger margin at the break, as James Milners shot in the 39th beat Cech but was inadvertently blocked by Aguero. Kompany then fired wide in first-half injury time after Milners poor cross on a counterattack was pushed out to him by Cech.A lot of fans were still making their way back to their seats after the halftime break when Barry sent a cross into the area and Aguero rose to send a looping header in off the post.Chelsea looked unlikely to find a way back, but Bas brilliant finish gave the team renewed hopes. Just seconds after manager Rafa Benitez put on Fernando Torres as an extra attacking threat, Ba met a high bouncing ball in the area and turned in the air to slot the ball past the diving Pantilimon. He nearly scored a second moments later after Eden Hazard chased down the ball by the byline and fired a cross in toward Ba, but Pantilimon was able to block the effort.Toure nearly made it 3-1 in the 80th when he held off two defenders to break into the area, but fired wide as he lost his balance.Hazard had one final chance for Chelsea, but blasted a shot high from distance in the third minute of injury time.

Police say three officers have been injured and 27 arrests made. The violence came after a Premier League derby between Newcastle and Sunderland on Sunday. Sunderland, the visiting team, won 3-0. Their supporters were confronted by Newcastle fans outside the stadium, including at the citys main train station. Objects were thrown and the three police officers were injured. One of them required hospital treatment. The disturbances came a day after fans of London club Millwall fought among themselves at Wembley Stadium during an FA Cup semifinal against Wigan. A number of fans were bloodied in disturbing scenes that left many young fans in tears. Police say 14 people were arrested in that incident. |
Robredo beats Anderson to win Grand Prix Hassan II Posted: CASABLANCA (AP) - Tommy Robredo won the Grand Prix Hassan II by beating second-seeded Kevin Anderson of South Africa 7-6 (6), 4-6, 6-3 in the final on Sunday for his 11th career title. In their first meeting, the Spaniard saved four breakpoints in the third set and then broke Anderson for the second time in the match to clinch his first title since winning on outdoor clay in February 2011 at Santiago, Chile. Ten of his titles and 15 of his 18 career finals have been on the surface.Robredos ranking has slipped to 72nd after peaking at No. 5 in August 2006 following his five-month absence last year because of a leg injury.Andersons two career titles have come on outdoor hard-courts. His previous win was last year at Delray Beach, Florida.
Ogier wins Rally of Portugal, extends lead Posted: ALMODOVAR (AP) - Sebastien Ogier extended his lead in the World Rally championship by winning the Rally of Portugal on Sunday. The French driver steered his Volkswagen Polo through the final four stages in the Algarve to finish 58.2 seconds ahead of Finlands Mikko Hirvonen in second.Ogiers teammate Jar-Matti Latvala came in third, more than four minutes off the pace.It was Ogiers third victory in the first four races of the 13-event season. The victory, however, appeared to be in doubt when a clutch problem caused Ogier to lose time during the first stage. But his team managed to keep the car going and he cruised to the win.Its a perfect result but this week has been really complicated for us, said Ogier. Today was more than stressful for me, and at the start of the first one I thought the rally was over because the clutch was slipping. Finally it came back. It was a kind of miracle. The team has done a good job because this was a very rough rally and we have had many small problems. They managed to fix the car all the time so big congratulations to them.Ogier now has 102 points in the championship standings, 54 ahead of Hirvonen. It was the 29-year-old Ogiers ninth career win, and his third win in Portugal after emerging victorious in 2010 and 2011.The next race is in Argentina on May 1-4.
Unemployment hits 16 percent in Arab states in 2012 Posted: ALGIERS (AFP) - Unemployment in Arab countries rose to 16 percent in 2012 following the revolts which erupted the previous year, Arab Labour Organisation chief Ahmed Mohamed Luqman announced on Sunday. The unemployment level in the Arab world was 14 percent in 2010, which translates to 17 million people out of work, Luqman said in Algiers. This increased by two points by the end of 2012 to 16 percent, or 20 million people unemployed, the ALO director general added.Luqman said the upheavals that swept the Arab world in 2011 and 2012 had caused the rise, particularly because of a plunge in foreign investments and the number of tourists visiting the region. The return of foreign investment and political stability will be indispensable in reversing the rise in unemployment in Arab Spring countries, he said.A meeting of the ALO, which is affiliated to the 22-member Arab League, opens on Monday in the Algerian capital where ministers from the region, experts and trade union representatives are to discuss ways of tackling unemployment.
Butt wants Afridi to concentrate on cricket Posted: ISLAMABAD (AP) - Former Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ijaz Butt advised Shahid Afridi to concentrate on improving his batting and bowling skills to keep his place in the national side, rather than criticize the ex-administrator.Last week, Afridi said that during Butts tenure Pakistan was hit by match-fixing scandals and that he was removed as ODI captain despite Pakistan making the semifinal of the 2011 World Cup.I always have felt very strongly that playing members should not make comments publicly, Butt wrote in a letter that was sent to the all-rounder on Saturday. When you retire, you can definitely make such comments about other well wishers of cricket.Butt started the war of words when he reportedly said that coach Dav Whatmore should be removed because his association with Twenty20 captain Mohammad Hafeez was putting pressure on ODI captain Misbah-ul-Haq.Afridi responded by saying that the squad setup was good and everyone must support the team and the players. However, Butt reiterated his stance against Hafeez by saying that he doesnt think the all-rounder is the right man to lead Pakistan in any format of the game Twenty20, tests or ODIs.Hafeez is a very good all-rounder and can prove an asset to Pakistan cricket if he concentrates only on his cricketing activities, Butt said in the letter. I very strongly feel that he should not be made captain of any of the sides.Pakistan selectors have dropped veteran Younis Khan from the 30-man provisional list for Champions Trophy in England a decision that does not go down well with Butt. This was very unfair, Butt said. All good cricketers have lien (lean) time. He had the lien (lean) time but won the Twenty20 World Cup when I made him the captain of the team.Butt also reminded Afridi that he enjoyed a very good friendship with new PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf and he just wants Pakistan cricket to flourish.Mr. Zaka Ashraf is not only known to me for over 40 years but he is also a good friend of mine, Butt said. My statement was basically as an advice to Mr. Zaka but I have never interfered in any of his working ever since he became PCB Chairman and I have the feeling that some people are not advising him sincerely in his cricketing activities.Afridi, who has not taken a wicket in his last six one-day internationals, also said last week he wanted to play until the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, provided he stays fit and continues to perform at the top level. For this my suggestion to you would be that you should work hard to improve your batting and bowling efforts. In the past you have been one of the best all-rounders but in the recent times you have had a very lien (lean) time, Butt wrote.Butt also invited Afridi to meet him whenever he comes to Lahore to clear the air between the two.
Seeking vote in name of religion is fair: Fazl Posted: LAHORE (Web Desk) - Talking to party workers JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman Sunday said Election Commission should make its position clear regarding its directions not to seek votes in name of Islam. He said ECP was representing the views of secularists, adding Islam seeks power.Election Commission is expanding the scope of its code with every passing day, he said.Criticizing the insulting attitude of the Returning Officers during the process of scrutiny, Fazl said the ROs mocked the candidates.“Institutions are crumbling in Pakistan and country is drifting towards bankruptcy,” he said.He said 600 candidates of JUI-F were contesting the elections throughout the country, adding restoration of law and order would be the priority of JUI after coming to power.
Dogs being marginalized, Kennel Club warns Posted: LONDON (Web Desk) - The Kennel Club has warned that dogs are being increasingly “marginalised” in society, and treated as a “nuisance” that must be controlled and restricted by the authorities. The organisation has spoken out about the spread of “draconian” restrictions on dogs and their owners which are being introduced by local councils across the country.Under the rising number of “dog control orders”, the animals are being banned from large areas of parkland, beaches and other public spaces on which they have traditionally been able to exercise. The effect, according to the Kennel Club, has been to “ghettoise” the animals, pushing them out of some neighbourhoods and forcing them into increasingly congested, designated areas.Caroline Kisko, the club’s secretary, said: “In many areas, especially in the cities, dogs are no longer accepted as they once were. They are frowned upon and considered a nuisance and marginalised. There is a general loss to wider society in all of this.“Our culture is one of enjoying and even benefiting from the company of dogs. Now, pet dogs are left at home more and more, and there is an increasingly anti-dog attitude.”Under the orders, councils can issue blanket bans on dogs from certain public areas. They can also bring in rules that say the animals must be kept on leads and can restrict the number of animals that people can walk. Owners can face £1,000 fines for breaching the orders.Since the legislation introducing them was passed in 2005, orders have been put in place to cover thousands of areas around Britain. No central database is kept but last year, the Kennel Club was informed of 60 councils bringing in restrictions – mostly covering several different patches of land.It believes the true number of orders now in place is far larger, in part because councils do not have to widely consult on the orders, beyond posting a notice in local newspapers, meaning they can be introduced before opposition can be organised. The Club is also concerned that the situation could worsen under new measures being introduced by the Home Office. These would see the orders scrapped and dog restrictions covered by “public spaces protection orders” – measures designed to allow the authorities to clamp down on crack houses and brothels.Under the plans, the Club warns, there will be even less need for dog owners to be consulted on new bans. The restrictions are intended to prevent animals roaming out of control and to curb fouling. However, Mrs Kisko said those that suffer under them are responsible owners, who obey the regulations, rather than irresponsible ones who flout them.Mrs Kisko added: “Authorities think they can just bring in an order and it will be job done’. But all they have done is move a problem. It tends to ghettoise.”Last year, a study in London found that there were more than 200 places across the capital where dog walking had been banned. Newark and Sherwood Council has put restrictions on 72 park areas.Maximum 4ft lead restrictions have also been introduced in some areas, while some councils are limiting the number of dogs people can walk at four.
OIC urges Myanmar to allow delegation visit Posted: JEDDAH (AFP) - The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation Sunday urged authorities in Myanmar to allow a ministerial delegation to visit the country to discuss deadly violence against Muslims. The worlds top Islamic body, in a statement following a meeting in the Saudi Red Sea city of Jeddah, also urged the UN Human Rights Commission to dispatch a fact-finding mission to Myanmar. The statement called on Burmese authorities to strongly respond to the organisations appeal and allow a ministerial OIC delegation to visit Myanmar.Last year at least 180 people were killed in the western state of Rakhine in clashes between local Buddhists and Rohingya -- a Muslim minority treated with hostility by most Burmese who see them as illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. In March, at least 43 people died in Buddhist-Muslim clashes which broke in central Myanmar where mosques were burned down and Muslim homes were destroyed. The unrest has instilled fear in the countrys Muslims, some of whose families had lived peacefully alongside Buddhists for generations.Such violence is a clear indication of the governments negative approach in dealing with ethnic and religious tensions that erupted last summer, said OIC chief Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, describing the violence as unacceptable. While the Rohingya -- described by the UN as among the most-persecuted minorities on the planet -- have long been denied Myanmar citizenship, the Muslims targeted in last months unrest are Myanmar nationals. The apparent trigger for the latest violence was a quarrel between a Muslim gold shop owner and Buddhist customers in the town of Meiktila. Soon afterwards, a monk was killed by Muslims. The violence escalated into a street riot that unleashed Buddhist-led bloodshed around the region.Ihsanoglu spoke at an emergency OIC Contact Group foreign ministers meeting in Jeddah on the Rohingya minority. The Contact Group, formed in September, includes 11 of the OICs 57 members -- Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Brunei, Djibouti, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Malaysia, Sudan and Turkey.Last year the OIC condemned the violence against Muslims in Myanmar as genocide.
