LHC puts restrictions on media covering scrutiny process: ROs told not to ask irrelevant questions

LAHORE, April 5: The Lahore High Court (LHC) stopped returning officers on Friday from asking irrelevant questions during the scrutiny of nomination papers of candidates, saying it was tarnishing the image of the judiciary. The LHC also put restrictions on the media covering the scrutiny process.

“All district returning officers/returning officers are directed to immediately refrain from asking random intrusive and inquisitive questions that have no nexus with information given in the nomination papers or do not arise from the objections raised by the other side or from the information collected or received by the RO from the authorised agencies like NAB, SBP, FBR and Nadra as per the direction issued by the ECP,” said an interim order issued by Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah..

Altaf assails ECP, wants polls date extended

KARACHI, April 5: Criticising returning officers for putting irrelevant and controversial questions to election candidates, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain said on Friday there was no harm in extending the date for general elections by a month.

Mr Hussain, however, clarified that he was not calling for a cancellation of elections because he believed that elections were necessary for the country. His party was fully prepared to contest the elections...

Kayani meets CEC

ISLAMABAD, April 5: Chief of Army Staff Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani met Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) retired Justice Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim in his office on Friday and discussed with him security arrangements pertaining to the May 11 general elections.

Gen Kayani assured Justice Ebrahim that the Army fully supported efforts being made by the Election Commission to hold free, fair and credible elections in the country and that all possible assistance would be extended to create an environment conducive to achieve that objective...

Mechanism for reducing debt of PSO shortly: minister

ISLAMABAD, April 5: Expecting a disbursement of Rs10 billion within 24 hours to ease financial difficulties of Pakistan State Oil (PSO), caretaker Petroleum Minister Sohail Wajahat Siddique said on Friday that fuels (furnace oil and gas) would be provided to various sectors and consumers purely on the basis of their efficiency.

Talking to reporters at his maiden briefing after taking over as Petroleum Minister, Mr Siddique said he had a meeting with Water and Power Minister Dr Mussadik Malik in the morning and agreed to work together to put in place a mechanism to bring down circular debt of PSO in a limited period of 45 to 50 days without recurrence....

Dutch court halts suspect’s extradition to US

THE HAGUE, April 5: A Dutch court on Friday halted the extradition of a Dutch-Pakistani Al Qaeda suspect to the United States, saying he would not be handed over until Washington guaranteed the same treatment for his post-traumatic stress disorder as in the Netherlands.

The Hague judge “prohibits the state to extradite Sabir Khan as long as the United States cannot guarantee” that Mr Khan gets a very specific type of treatment for his disorder, commonly referred to as PTSD, according to a court document...

N. Korea says it won’t guarantee embassies’ safety in case of war
