Serbia leads US 2-1 after marathon doubles

Posted:

BOISE, Idaho (AP) - The United States trails Serbia 2-1 in their Davis Cup quarterfinal after the top-ranked doubles team of Bob and Mike Bryan lost to Serbia's Nenad Zimonjic and Ilija Bozoljac 7-6 (5), 7-6 (1), 5-7, 4-6, 15-13 on Saturday in a match that stretched to 4 hours and 23 minutes.Zimonjic served three aces in the final game, closing out the victory with an ace on the second match point. It was a clutch performance by a multiple Grand Slam doubles champion. For sure, it's the biggest win in the Davis Cup doubles for me, said the 36-year-old Zimonjic, who was instrumental in Serbia's only Davis Cup victory in 2010. We were playing very good. This was definitely a great, great performance and great match from me.Bozoljac is a 27-year-old journeyman who ranks 335 in singles and 1,150 in doubles. Anybody who was supposed to play with Nenad was supposed to be the underdog against the Bryans, Bozoljac said. We won and I just can't believe it happened. This is my best performance in Davis Cup so far. I knew if I give my 100 percent for one match I could play on a really high level. The Bryans have a 20-4 record together in Davis Cup doubles but have lost their past two Davis Cup matches in five sets this year, the only two times they've played five-set matches in Davis Cup action. We have to tip our hats to those guys, Bob Bryan said. They played well all day, 36 aces and they didn't give us much opportunity, especially in the fifth. We're obviously disappointed that we let the team down.Zimonjic was the star of the opening two sets. But in the final set, the steadying force was the inexperienced Bozoljac, who has a serve that kept the Bryans off-balance.In the final set, the Serbs had two break points on Bob Bryan's serve in the ninth game, but the Americans were able to save that service game.Serbia again had two break points, this time on Mike Bryan's serve in the 27th game, and converted on a Mike Bryan error on the second break opportunity. In the final game, the Bryans had their only two opportunities to break serve in the final set, but Zimonjic saved them with a service winner and an ace. Both teams won 217 points in the match, but most of the overall statistics favored the Serbians. The Serbians had 125 winners and 36 aces to 80 winners and only 12 aces for the Bryans. The Bryans were forced into 81 errors but only pushed the Serbians to 47 errors.Sunday's reverse singles matches will start with world No. 1 Novak Djokovic playing 20th-ranked Sam Querrey. The final match will be 44th-ranked Viktor Troicki of Serbia against 23rd-ranked John Isner.

Egypt calls for calm after deadly clashes

CAIRO (AFP) - Egypt's presidency appealed for calm on Saturday after religious insults sparked a gun battle in a poor town north of Cairo in which four Christians and a Muslim died.Fighting flared on Friday night in Al-Khusus, in Qalyubia governorate, after a Muslim in his 50s objected to children drawing a swastika on a religious institute, a security source told AFP.The man insulted Christians and the cross, and an argument broke out with a young Christian man who was passing by, which escalated into a gun battle with assault rifles between the Muslims and the Christians.Five people were killed in the clashes, including four Christians. In addition to this, six others were wounded, at least two of whom were suffering gunshot wounds, a security official said. The presidency denounced sectarian violence and appealed to all citizens to respect the law and shun any acts that can affect the security and stability of the country.A priest in Al-Khusus, Suryal Yunan, said attackers torched parts of an Anglican church, the official MENA news agency reported.Muslims also set fire to a Christian home and ransacked a pharmacy owned by a Copt, a police official said.A number of angry Muslim residents tried to surround the town's Mar Jirjis church, but the security presence in the area stopped them from doing so.Both sides then lit tyres in the narrow streets where residents live in crowded slum housing. The authorities are in complete control of the town, a security official said.Christians form between six and 10 percent of Egypt's population of nearly 83 million people.Egypt's Coptic Christians and Muslims have clashed on several occasions since the revolution that toppled president Hosni Mubarak in February 2011. Around 50 Christians and several Muslims have been killed.

Women have 'happier love lives' than men

Posted:

LONDON (Web Desk) - The latest skirmish in the battle of the sexes suggests that men are, overall, happier than women but women are more satisfied with their love lives. The conclusions were drawn from a survey that found men had a brighter outlook due to earning more and fulfilment at work, among other factors. However women were happier with more personal aspects of their lives, including health and sex. Concerns about money were most likely to prevent both sexes feeling content, with 46 per cent of people worried about their finances, the study found. On average an additional £132 per month would ease such worries and make people happier. The study, commissioned by Benenden Health, found that married couples were more likely to be happier than single men and women. One fifth of couples, however, said that they had become less optimistic since getting married.Researchers interviewed 2000 men and women, examining their attitudes to 12 aspects of life. Men were found to be happier about seven areas of their lives: their salary, career prospects, body shape, appearance, finances, job security, and how they were perceived by other people.Women were more satisfied than men in five areas: their love, family and sex lives, as well as their health and living location. Men and women taking part in the study were initially asked whether they had a “cup half full” or “cup half empty” attitude to life. Researchers then examined the reasons for their choice.Overall the average adult was found to rate their happiness levels at 64 per cent. Sunny weather, an increased income and an improved diet were among the top five factors which participants said would make them feel more content. Those interviewed said they would also be happier if they received more reassurance from their bosses and could spend more time with their children. One third of people surveyed said that they would be more optimistic if their partner showed them more commitment. The study found that older people were generally happier about their lives than younger people. Those over the age of 55 were most likely to rate themselves as eternal optimists. Young people were found to be more likely to say their perspective on life had become more negative, while people over 55 were least likely to feel their optimism had declined over time.Paul Keenan, a spokesman for Benenden Health said: “Given the pessimistic economic outlook, the financial restraints everyone is under and the grim weather, it’s good to discover deep down, there seems to be a positive and forward-looking attitude across Britain.“Certainly, a positive attitude goes a long way towards creating a feeling of well-being which in turn can only be good for our long term health. “This perhaps serves to demonstrate the British stiff upper lip’ is alive and well in the 21st century.”He added: “It’s interesting to see men are more likely to adopt a more upbeat view overall — although that particular finding is likely to be a debate that will rumble on and on.”

Paris employs sheep to mow city lawns

PARIS (Web Desk) - The city of Paris, France has employed some new staff this week to keep the grass trimmed on municipal gardens and lawns— a flock of sheep and four ewes, according to the Associated Press. They dont demand much pay, only room and board, and the woolly creatures certainly use less gas than a lawnmower. The news wire reports the animals munch away at the grass all day, content to eat their fill and keep public spaces looking tidy. Its an idea that could catch on as a low-energy, environmentally friendly solution, given enough interest.Companies in France have already begun making a business of selling sheep mowers. One, called Ecomouton, says on its website that it takes good care of the sheep to make sure they are healthy. Theyre certainly well-fed.A couple in Guelph, Ontario told the Weather Network last summer that they were planning to start a business renting the sheep on their farm out to people who wanted their lawns mowed.Jennifer Osborn also told the Guelph Mercury she was hoping to convince locals to put away the gas guzzlers and rent out her sheep for their lawn maintenance, as an expansion of the small farm her family owns, called All Sorts Acre.

6 Americans, doctor killed in Afghan attacks

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (AP) - Six American troops and civilians and an Afghan doctor were killed in attacks on Saturday in southern and eastern Afghanistan as the U.S. militarys top officer began a weekend visit to the country, officials said.In the south, three U.S. service members, two U.S. civilians and the doctor were killed when a suicide bomber detonated a car full of explosives just as a convoy with the international military coalition drove past another convoy of vehicles carrying the governor of Zabul province.Another American civilian was killed in an insurgent attack in eastern Afghanistan, the U.S. military said in a statement. The attacks occurred the same day that U.S. Gen. Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, arrived in Afghanistan for a visit aimed at assessing the level of training that American troops can provide to Afghan security forces after international combat forces complete their withdrawal at the end of 2014.Those killed in Zabul province included three members of the military and two U.S. civilians, including at least one employee with the U.S. State Department, said a U.S. official who spoke on condition of anonymity ahead of a formal announcement. Several other Americans and Afghans, possibly as many as nine, were wounded, the official said. The U.S. Embassy in Kabul confirmed that Americans were involved in an attack in Qalat, the capital of Zabul province. Zabul is next to Kandahar, the birthplace of the Taliban, and shares a volatile border with Pakistan. There are American and Afghan casualties. We are still investigating the incident and cannot confirm details at this time, the embassy said in a statement. There were no immediate claims of responsibility for the attacks. The deaths bring the number of foreign military forces killed this year to 30, including 22 Americans. A total of six foreign civilians have died in Afghanistan so far this year, according to an Associated Press count. It was unclear if the car bomber was targeting the coalition convoy or that of Provincial Gov. Mohammad Ashraf Nasery, who was driving to an event at a nearby school in Qalat. The explosion occurred in front of a hospital.Nasery, who survived the attack, said the car bomb exploded as his convoy was passing the hospital. He said a doctor was killed, and two of his bodyguards and a student from the school were wounded. The coalition convoy was leaving a base that is home to a provincial reconstruction team, or PRT, officials said. The governors convoy was at the gate of the school, provincial police chief Gen. Ghulam Sakhi Rooghlawanay said. At the same time the (coalition) convoy came out from the PRT and was passing by that place. The suicide bomber blew himself up between the two convoys.Nasery said he thought his convoy was the intended target. Im safe and healthy, he told The Associated Press in a telephone call. The target was my vehicle, but I survived.

British woman stabbed to death in Srinagar

SRINAGAR, India (AFP) -, police said after arresting a Dutch man on suspicion of her murder. The 43-year-old Dutch national was taken into custody as he tried to flee the scenic Kashmir valley in the foothills of the Himalayas, police superintendent Tahir Sajjad told AFP.We walked into a pool of blood in her room, Sajjad said. We found a sharp-edged knife close to her body. The young lady had multiple stab wounds. The attacker broke the latch on the cabin door of the 24-year-old British tourist who had been staying in the houseboat on the picturesque Dal Lake in the Indian Kashmir city of Srinagar for two months, police said.Police were investigating whether the victim had been sexually assaulted in the incident, which comes after a string of attacks on tourists travelling in India. They said her body had been sent for a post-mortem examination. We can confirm the Jammu and Kashmir police have the body of a British woman. We have contacted the next-of-kin and we are providing consular assistance to the family, a British High Commission (embassy) spokeswoman told AFP in New Delhi. At this moment, we cannot reveal the identity of the woman, she added. In a statement, the police said that the victim was from Manchester.Police said they had arrested the suspect in a taxi near Qazigund, 75 kilometres (45 miles) south of Srinagar on the highway leading out of the Kashmir valley, and they identified him as 43-year-old Richard De-Wit. The suspect has been taken into custody on suspicion of murder and we are questioning him, Sajjad said.De-Wit had been staying in the same houseboat, named New Beauty, as the victim and he had arrived on Thursday, police said. He had allegedly fled in a small boat which capsized as he was trying to reach the shore, forcing him to swim. The suspect was carrying only his passport when he was arrested, police said.We flashed an alert for his arrest, Kashmir Inspector General of Police Abdul Ghani Mir said. The Dutch embassy in New Delhi could not be reached immediately for comment. The victim had been a regular visitor to the houseboat in Srinagar for three years, the vessels owner said. She was like our family member and would often eat with us, Abdul Rahim Shoda, the houseboat owner, told AFP. She was like my daughter and my soul is crying.Shoda said he discovered the victim lying on the floor, drenched in blood several hours after midnight when he got up to do his regular prayers. I just went mad seeing what was in front of me, he said.Every year, thousands of tourists visit Kashmir, known as the Switzerland of the East for its snow-capped mountains, lakes and breathtaking landscapes, many of them staying on numerous brightly decorated houseboats dotting Dal Lake.Last month, a 39-year-old Swiss cyclist was allegedly gang-raped and robbed by six men in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. Also last month, a British woman dental hygienist suffered leg injuries when she jumped from a hotel balcony in the northern tourist city of Agra, fearing a sexual assault by hotel employees. The safety of women in India has been in the spotlight since the December fatal gang-rape of a 23-year-old physiotherapy student on a bus in New Delhi, which sparked nationwide outrage.

Bangladesh Islamists rally against atheist bloggers

Posted:

DHAKA (AFP) - Hundreds of thousands of Islamists rallied in Dhaka on Saturday after staging a long march to the Bangladeshi capital to demand the execution of atheist bloggers for allegedly defaming Islam. It was the latest protest to rack Bangladesh, deepening tensions between secularists and the largest Islamic party, Jamaat-e-Islami, whose leaders are under trial for crimes committed during the countrys 1971 war of independence. The Islamists converged on Dhakas main commercial hub to protest against what they said were blasphemous writings by atheist bloggers, shouting God is great -- hang the atheist bloggers. They defied a pro-government national strike by secular protesters -- who staged a smaller rival protest in Dhaka on Saturday -- aimed at foiling the Islamists march.Around 200,000 people attended the rally, Dhakas deputy police commissioner Sheikh Nazmul Alam told AFP, while protest organisers put the number at over half a million. Authorities told AFP, meanwhile, two activists of the ruling secular Awami League had died in the last 24 hours in clashes with Islamist demonstrators, bringing to 96 the number killed in violence linked to the war crimes trials.Protest organisers called Saturdays rally the long march. Many began travelling by foot on Friday from remote villages to Dhakas Motijheel area that became a sea of white skull caps and robes. Ive come here to fight for Islam. We wont allow any bloggers to blaspheme our religion and our beloved Prophet Mohammed, said Shahidul Islam, an imam at a mosque outside Dhaka who walked 20 kilometres (13 miles).Hefajat-e-Islam, an Islamic group supported by tens of thousands of seminaries, organised the rally in support of its 13-point demand that included enactment of a blasphemy law to execute atheist bloggers. There has been vociferous debate between staunch atheists and fundamentalists in Bangladeshs social media for years, but it took a deadly turn in February when an anti-Islam blogger was murdered.Earlier in the week, four online writers were arrested on charges of hurting Islamic religious sentiments in a country where 90 percent of people are Muslims.Following recent protests over the war crimes tribunal, the government has blocked a dozen websites and blogs to stem the unrest. It has also set up a panel, which includes intelligence chiefs, to monitor blasphemy on social media.Under the countrys cyber laws, a blogger or Internet writer can face up to ten years in jail for defaming a religion.Dhaka was virtually cut off from the rest of the country from Friday afternoon when secularists called a 22-hour nationwide strike to obstruct the march and private transport operators halted services fearing violence.Islamists who could not take part in the march staged rallies in cities and towns across the country, with some 7,000 taking part in a protest in the port city of Chittagong, local police officer Nazrul Islam told AFP.Two Jamaat leaders have already been convicted by the tribunal which critics accuse of fabricating charges as part of a government bid to settle political scores, rather than to deliver justice. The government says the trials are needed to heal the wounds of the 1971 war in which it says three million people were killed. Independent estimates put the death toll at between 300,000 and 500,000.

Pope orders strict action against child abuse

Posted:

VATICAN CITY (AFP) - Meeting on Friday with Monsignor Gerhard Ludwig Mueller, the head of the Vatican department that disciplines predator priests, the pope asked him to act with determination in cases of sexual abuse, the Vatican said in a statement. It was the first official word on the issue from the new pope, who was elected March 13 to succeed Benedict XVI whose papacy was marred by relentless paedophilia scandals with tens of thousands of victims over several decades. The statement noted that the policy followed the line established by Benedict, who was the first pope to apologise to victims and called for zero tolerance against sexual abuse by priests.Francis asked for stepped-up measures to protect minors and help those who were subjected to such violence in the past. Also in line with his predecessor, Francis reminded the heads of national Catholic churches around the world that they had committed to formulating and implementing directives for addressing the problem -- including turning abusers over to local law enforcement.Muellers Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith published in May 2011, a document ordering bishops to turn in members of the clergy suspected of paedophilia and to prevent them from working in settings involving minors. It gave the bishops conferences one year to come up with guidelines on combating the crimes and cooperating with police. As of September 2012, three-quarters of the national churches had complied, according to Monsignor Charles Scicluna, the Vatican prosecutor in sex abuse cases. The scourge of abusive priests burst into the spotlight more than a decade ago with a cascade of scandals rocking the Catholic Church worldwide, from Ireland to the United States and Australia to Benedicts native Germany. The Vatican says it continues to receive around 600 claims against abusive priests every year, many of them dating back to the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.Sexual abuse by priests has often been coupled with cover-ups by their superiors, typically by transferring them to other parishes. In Latin America, Franciss home region, the most notorious scandal concerned the Mexican founder of the conservative Legionnaires of Christ congregation, Marcial Maciel, who was accused of sexually abusing children before he died in 2008.SNAP, a vocal support group for victims, reacted immediately to Fridays statement, demanding that the pope match words with actions. We cant confuse words with actions, said the Survivors Network for those Abused by Priests.Kids wont be helped by a continuation of the tiny symbolic gestures taken by Pope Benedict, it said. Kids will be helped by decisive changes. Thus far, Pope Francis hasnt even discussed, much less adopted, even a single reform.SNAP, which has asked the International Criminal Court to prosecute Benedict for crimes against humanity, has demanded that the Church publish the names of predator priests on the Internet. Also on Friday, the Vatican announced a donation of $50,000 by the new pontiff to help flood victims in his native Argentina, where at least 59 people have died in the record rains and flooding.Vatican envoy Emil Paul Tscherrig said Francis wants to express in this concrete manner his spiritual closeness with all those who suffer and those who are generously offering their help and support. And Francis will hold his first meeting with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday to discuss the continuing cooperation between the United Nations and the Holy See, the UN chiefs spokesman Martin Nesirky said.
