Government official files nomination papersBy Ikram JunaidiISLAMABAD, April 6: The Election Commission (ECP) has received an application against Mir Shahjahan Khetran, managing director of the Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation (PTDC), stating that in spite of being the head of a government organisation, Mr Khetran has filed his nomination papers to contest election for a provincial assembly seat (PB 17) from Balochistan. The complainants have accused Mr Khetran of using government vehicles and other resources for his election campaign. | ||||||
Last day for scrutiny today: Returning officers face uphill taskBy Iftikhar A. KhanISLAMABAD, April 6: The returning officers face an uphill task of scrutinising thousands of nomination papers on Sunday — the last date for the process — and observers fear that many forms might be cleared in haste without examining questions of tax evasion, loan default, clearing of utility bills and other government dues. An official of the Election Commission (ECP) told Dawn that it had completed the process of receiving nomination papers from 425 ROs across the country for preliminary verification. He said 24,094 nomination papers had been received from the ROs so far, of which 20,743 had been sent back along with reports of the State Bank of Pakistan, Federal Board of Revenue and National Accountability Bureau. | ||||||
Banks to remain open todayKARACHI, April 6: The State Bank of Pakistan advised all banks on Saturday to open their offices and branches dealing with the credit information on Sunday from 8am to 12 midnight to address issues about credit information of the contesting candidates. A statement issued on Saturday said this would help the banks issue clearance certificates to those borrowers who had cleared their overdue liabilities, update eCIB system of the SBP and address any other issues. | ||||||
100 ex-legislators fail to get degrees verifiedBy Ikram JunaidiISLAMABAD, April 6: Over 100 former lawmakers who were unable to submit their documents to the Higher Education Commission (HEC) by Friday for verification are now likely to be out of the electoral race. According to a list available with Dawn, out of 183 former lawmakers given an opportunity to get their educational papers authenticated, only 80 did so by the April 5 deadline. This leaves 103 facing the prospects of disqualification. | ||||||

Scrutiny of Musharraf’s papers for Karachi seat deferredBy Our Staff ReporterKARACHI, April 6: Scrutiny of nomination papers of retired Gen Pervez Musharraf for a National Assembly constituency in Karachi was deferred till Sunday because he did not appear before the returning officer on Saturday. Over 10 objections have been filed against the former military ruler’s candidature. Syed Ikramur Rehman, the returning officer for NA-250, asked Gen Musharraf to appear before him on Saturday for the scrutiny of his nomination papers. Six Americans killed in Afghan attacksKANDAHAR, April 6: Six American troops and civilians and an Afghan doctor were killed in attacks on Saturday in southern and eastern Afghanistan as the US military’s top officer began a weekend visit to the country, officials said. In the south, three US service members, two US civilians and the doctor were killed when a suicide bomber detonated a car full of explosives just as a convoy with the international military coalition drove past another convoy of vehicles carrying the governor of Zabul province. | ||||||
