15 killed in shelling near Damascus: NGO Posted: BEIRUT (AFP) - At least 15 civilians, including a child and three women, died on Sunday in shelling of towns east of Damascus, a monitoring group said, while tanks pounded rebel enclaves on the Syrian capitals edges. The army said it had laid siege to rebels east of Damascus, although the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said battles and shelling raged on in the area.Elsewhere, loyalist troops made a rare advance in the north and took control of a strategic village near the city of Aleppo, said the monitoring group.Fifteen people, among them a child and three women, were killed in shelling of the towns of Jisreen, Kafr Batna and nearby areas, said the Observatory, which relies on a network of activists, doctors and lawyers for its reports.Another six rebel fighters were killed in fighting in Nashabiyeh, also east of Damascus, said the Britain-based group. Some of Syrias fiercest and best organised rebel groups hold enclaves east of Damascus -- known as the Eastern Ghouta area -- and the army has for the past several months fought to halt the insurgents in their tracks. In a statement carried by state news agency SANA, the military said on Sunday it has laid siege to rebels in Eastern Ghouta.Units from our army in the Eastern Ghouta carried out a special operation yesterday, in collaboration with honest citizens from the region, that resulted in the tightening of a siege on the whole of the area, it said. But Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP that many villages and towns were still under rebel control. On the edges of Damascus, meanwhile, army tanks pounded rebel enclaves in Qadam and Jobar, said the Observatory. In the north, the army took control of the flashpoint village of Aziza, following several days of fierce bombardment, it said.Rebel prime minister Ghassan Hitto, meanwhile, travelled to the Idlib region of northwest Syria on Sunday to pursue his consultations on forming an interim government, his opposition National Coalition announced on its Facebook page.Sundays violence came a day after at least 116 people were killed across Syria, said the Observatory. The UN says more than 70,000 people have been killed in Syria since March 2011, when the army unleashed a brutal crackdown against dissent, morphing a peaceful revolt against the regime into an insurgency. |
Abbas to Kerry: Release of prisoners key to resuming talks Posted: RAMALLAH (AFP) - Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas on Sunday told visiting US Secretary of State John Kerry that the release of prisoners held by Israel was a top priority for resuming peace talks.President Abbas stressed that the release of the prisoners is a priority that creates an appropriate climate for the possibility of moving the peace process forward, his spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeina told AFP after the two held nearly 90 minutes of talks at the presidential compound in Ramallah.Abbas told Kerry that releasing the 4,500 or so prisoners held in Israeli jails, a deeply sensitive issue on the Palestinian street, was a top priority for creating the right atmosphere for the resumption of negotiations.Abu Rudeina said the discussions with Kerry were geared towards finding the best way of creating an appropriate climate for resuming talks with Israel. He said it was Abbass fourth meeting with Kerry in just over a month.Abbas also said talks can only happen in tandem with an Israeli freeze on settlement construction in east Jerusalem and the West Bank which he said was unacceptable and a red line particularly in the highly sensitive E1 area just outside Jerusalem. The Palestinian side is willing to return to the negotiating table, but only if Israel stops settlement activity in Palestinian territories and releases prisoners, especially those arrested before signing of the (1993) Oslo Accords, he quoted Abbas as saying. The issue of Palestinians jailed by Israel is highly sensitive and frequently sparks mass demonstrations across the territories that tend to develop into violent clashes with the military. One of the main points of concern is prisoners on hunger strike who are held without charge, but over the last week, there have been major disturbances over the death of a long-term prisoner with cancer, with the Palestinians accusing Israel of medical negligence. |

Serena rallies to claim 49th WTA title Posted: CHARLESTON (AFP) - Serena Williams earned her 49th career singles title and third of the year by rallying to beat former world number one Jelena Jankovic in the final of the Family Circle Cup on Sunday. The world No.1 Williams and former Charleston winner Jankovic got into a testy verbal exchange early in the second set after Williams accused Jankovic of trying to rush her on the service return. After the exchange, Williams won 12 of the final 14 games.I am definitely happy to have another win under my belt. Excited to hold my title, said Williams, of her 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 victory on the green clay surface.Williams successfully defended her title by claiming her third overall Charleston crown one day after routing her sister Venus in the semi-finals.She has won 22 consecutive clay court matches at WTA Tour events and Fed Cup and 15 straight matches in Charleston. That includes titles last year and 2008.Bad blood between the two surfaced early in the second set with Jankovic serving after having just won the first set.Jankovic was in mid-swing on a serve when Williams stopped and held up her racquet indicating she wasnt ready to play the point. The two then verbally sparred with Williams telling Jankovic to wait until I am ready.Honestly, you have a problem, Williams shouted across the net at Jankovic.Jankovic then protested during the change over to the chair umpire telling him that Williams shouldnt get special treatment. After the match, Williams insisted she, and Venus, are the most courteous players on the WTA Tour.I wasnt ready, said Williams. I am the most respectful player, other than Venus. I am so respectful to my colleagues.Unfortunately that respect doesnt always extend to line judges. At the 2009 US Open Williams once told a line judge she was going to shove a tennis ball down her throat.Serbian Jankovic, who won this event five years ago, was aiming for her 14th career title. The ninth-seeded Jankovic had won 14 of her previous 16 matches.Jankovic dropped to 4-6 all-time in matchups against Williams.Williams clinched the title on her third championship point with a backhand winner to the open court that Jankovic couldnt get to.Williams double faulted on the first championship point and then hammered a backhand into the net on the second one for a rare unforced error in the match. |
