Djokovic, Nadal through as Murray falls

Posted:

MONTE CARLO (AFP) - Top seed Novak Djokovic passed another test on his suspect right ankle when he posted a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over Juan Monaco to join eight-time champion Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals of the Monte Carlo Masters.Djokovic will next take on Finn Jarkko Nieminen who spent two and a half hours in knocking out Juan Martin del Potro 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7/4) to reach only his third clay quarter-final since 2006.Third seed Nadal turned in a routine performance to dispatch German Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-2, 6-4 as the Spanish king of clay bids for a record ninth straight trophy at the event.Im very excited to play in every tournament, and especially when Im playing in a tournament like Monte Carlo, said Nadal, who won his 44th match in a row at the venue where he suffered his only loss a decade ago.To be excited is impossible, I feel more relaxed also.Nadal will next line up against Grigor Dimitrov, who beat Germanys Florian Mayer, 6-2, 6-4.The win was the Spaniards 17th in a row after successive titles this season in Sao Paulo, Acapulco and Indian Wells.Second seeded Andy Murray, who has yet to win a claycourt title, collapsed to a 6-1, 6-2 loss to Stanislas Wawrinka. The win for the Swiss in less than an hour guaranteed that Roger Federer returns to the number two ranking on Monday, sending the Murray back to third. The shell-shocked Scot committed 24 unforced errors.US Open champion Murray, a 2012 quarter-finalist, went nil for two on break points and lost his own serve five times in the rout.I made a lot of mistakes, 24 unforced errors is far too many. Thats a sets worth. Thats where half the points went, said Murray, who had regained the number two world ranking on the strength of his win in the Miami Masters.Ive played some good tournaments here. But, yeah, it does take me time to feel comfortable on the surface.I need matches against top players to see whats going wrong and whats going right, things I need to work on to get better.Normally towards the end of the clay court season, I start to feel better with my game and Ive had some good results, but at the start I have struggled a little bit.Djokovic played the role of ironman for a second day in succession as he overcame the ankle problem which had threatened to keep him from the event. The Serb laboured through a second comeback in 24 hours to beat Monaco in just over two hours, with 25 winners and 45 unforced errors. It was another great fight, Im trying to take it day by day, said Djokovic.I didnt know what to expect on court as I didnt feel so fresh this morning. But I managed to come back, it was a good win for me on clay against a good player. I tried to keep the points as short as possible and I served well when I needed to.Im feeling better on my ankle. This was a great struggle and Im glad to win it.Unpredictable Italian Fabio Fognini sprung a surprise on fourth seed Tomas Berdych, dismissing the Czech 6-4, 6-2. French sixth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga thrilled his home fans as he overwhelmed Austrian Jurgen Melzer 6-3, 6-0.

Alonso eyes 2nd straight F1 win in Bahrain

Posted:

SAKHIR (AP) - Having ended a 12-race drought with a dominant victory in China, Ferraris Fernando Alonso is quickly emerging as the most likely candidate to end the recent dominance of Red Bulls Sebastian Vettel. The two-time champion has the chance to overtake Vettel in the drivers championship with a win Sunday at the Bahrain Grand Prix. But the 31-year-old Spaniard is doing his best to tamp down expectations, insisting its early in a 19-race season where the first three races have seen three different winners. The three-time defending champion Vettel acknowledged that his Red Bull was no match for the Ferrari in China where he finished off the podium for the first time this season. But the 25-year-old German is confident he can defend his title in Bahrain.

Bahrain: Protests pose no threat to Grand Prix

Posted:

MANAMA (AP) - Organizers of Bahrains Grand Prix said Thursday that sporadic protests against the race and violent unrest across the Gulf nation do not pose a threat to the premier international event in the kingdom.Anti-government groups have stepped up protests against the race in attempts to embarrass authorities, but the demonstrations have been mostly isolated to areas that are hotbeds of opposition to the ruling royal family. Rights groups also are using the race to criticize Bahrains arrests and other security crackdowns.Zayed Alzayani, the chairman of the Bahrain International Circuit, said security measures in place this week at the circuit were no different than in past races. Police vehicles dotted the road leading to the circuit and there were several checkpoints before the track. We dont feel there is a direct threat to the track nor have we received any threats to the track, Alzayani said. But we take everything into account. For us, we want to produce an event that is memorable for those who attended.Alzayani insisted that Sundays race, which is biggest event in the Gulf nation and generates as much $220 million, is a unifying force in the country and that a majority of Bahrainis were backing it. He said ticket sales were up 20 percent over last year with 25,000 fans expected at the race. One of the distinctions of our race, when compared to other races around world, is you have total buy in from the nation, he said. The race has been endorsed by all members of society, including the opposition. If there are people who are against the race, that is fine. They are entitled to express their opinion within the confines of the law.Bahrain has faced more than two years of violence between the Sunni-led government and majority Shiites seeking a greater political voice. The latest clashes occurred mostly in Shiite districts of the country, which are often scenes of unrest. Graffiti on walls said: No F1, a reference to the Formula One event. Dont race on our blood. The race was postponed in 2011 after the Arab Spring-inspired uprising hit the country. The 2012 race was held, but was remembered more for massive protests before the event rather than Sebastian Vettels victory. One man died last year near the scene of the demonstrations, but this year there has been less attention on the race from rights groups and the protests so far have been smaller and less violent.Still, rights groups have used the race to highlight what they contend has been the slow pace of reform on the strategic island nation, home to the U.S. Navys 5th Fleet. They also complain of widespread arrests in the weeks preceding the race in villages surrounding the circuit.Instead of responding to the uprising of February 2011, the last two years have seen continued killings, arbitrary arrests and alleged torture in Bahrain, said Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui, deputy director of Amnesty Internationals Middle East and North Africa Program. The authorities are trying to use the Grand Prix as a platform to show progress, with claims that the human rights situation has improved, whilst stepping up repression in order to ensure nothing disturbs their public image.Several groups have called for the race to be canceled, including a group of British parliamentarians who sent a letter to Formula One chief Bernie Ecclestone.Responding to several rights groups concerned about the race, Jean Todt, the president of F1A, the governing body of world motor sports that includes Formula 1, said in an email that it is our firm belief that sports, and the F1 Grand Prix, can have a positive and healing effect in situations where conflict, social unrest and tensions are causing distress. At the Bahrain International Circuit, the only driver who talked extensively about the political situation was Red Bulls Mark Webber who had raised concerns about holding the race last year. He said he had softened his stance this year after the 2012 race was held without incident. We proved in past the event as a whole can go off not too badly, Webber said. Its awkward but we have shown we can have the event but there is still one eye on what is happening here. ... We need to try to, as a sport we love, to do whatever we can for the fans and make sure the countries (where) we go, everything is as good as possible. We cant control everything.

Astronomers find most Earth-like planets yet

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Using a potent NASA space telescope to scan the skies for planets like ours where life may exist, astronomers said Thursday they have found the most Earth-like candidates yet.Two of the five planets orbiting a Sun-like star called Kepler-62 are squarely in the habitable zone -- not too hot, not too cold and possibly bearing water, NASA scientists reported in the journal Science. These are the most similar objects to Earth that we have found yet, said Justin Crepp, assistant professor of physics at the University of Notre Dame. The two planets are slightly larger than ours, each with a radius of 1.41 and 1.61 times the radius of the Earth.Scientists do not yet know if their surfaces are rocky or watery, or if they have atmospheres that could sustain life. But their location and size suggest they could plausibly be composed of condensable compounds and be solid, either as a dry, rocky super-Earth or one composed of a significant amount of water, said the study.Other studies have indicated that planets with a radius under 1.6 have been found to have densities indicative of a rocky composition.Astronomers detected the planets by observing their star dim when the planets pass in front of it, what is known as a transit.Crepp first saw a dot near Kepler-62 about a year ago, and has studied the movements of the system for months in order to confirm the discovery. What really helped is that this star has five planets, he said. You can mimic one planet with another event, but when you have five of them and theyre all periodic, that helps to put the nail in the coffin. Its hard to make that kind of signature with anything else that you can dream up.In late 2011, NASA confirmed its first-ever planet in a habitable zone outside our solar system -- Kepler 22b, spinning around its star some 600 light years away. However, the large size of that exoplanet, at 2.4 times the size of the Earth, has left some doubt over whether the planet is rocky, gaseous or liquid.Kepler is NASAs first mission in search of Earth-like planets orbiting suns similar to ours.It is equipped with the largest camera ever sent into space in its search for planets as small as Earth, including those orbiting stars in a warm, habitable zone where liquid water could exist on the surface of the planet.

Oil rises near $88; natural gas jumps 4 percent

Posted:

NEW YORK (AP) - Oil rose from a four-month low Thursday, while natural gas soared to the highest level in 21 months on signs of robust demand for the fuel.West Texas Intermediate, the U.S. benchmark oil for May delivery rose $1.05, or 1.2 percent, to finish at $87.73 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Oil dropped $2.04, or 2.3 percent, on Wednesday the fourth daily drop of at least 2 percent in April.Concerns over global economic growth have caused the price of oil and other commodities to drop sharply. This week China reported slower-than-expected economic growth while the International Monetary Fund lowered its outlook for world economic growth for this year.Natural gas futures rose 19 cents, or 4.4 percent, to end at $4.40 per 1,000 cubic feet. The last time natural gas hit that level was July 2011.The Energy Departments Energy Information Administration reported that natural gas in storage grew by 31 billion cubic feet to 1.704 trillion cubic feet for the week ended April 12.Supplies typically rise in the spring, but last weeks increase was less than analysts expected. Homeowners in some parts of the U.S. still needed to turn the heat on as temperatures dropped below normal. In London, Brent crude, which is used to price oil used by many U.S. refiners, was up $1.44, or 1.5 percent, to finish at $99.13 on the ICE Futures exchange.

Pakistan offers to host 2019 World Cup qualifiers

Posted:

LAHORE (AFP) - Pakistans cricket chief said Thursday he had offered to host qualifiers for the 2019 World Cup despite a four-year suspension of international cricket in the country over security fears.Pakistan has not staged any top-level cricket since militants attacked the Sri Lankan team in Lahore in March 2009, killing eight people and wounding seven visiting players.Foreign teams have shunned tours to the troubled country over security fears, forcing the International Cricket Council (ICC) to shift Pakistans share of matches for the World Cup in 2011.Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Zaka Ashraf said he wanted the world to gauge the security situation in Pakistan. We have requested that the World Cup qualifiers 2018 should be given to us so that everyone can evaluate the security situation, Ashraf told reporters. The 2019 World Cup will be held in England.Ashraf claimed the ICC had given a commitment to assess the security situation when the time comes and will decide accordingly.Ashrafs efforts to revive international cricket in Pakistan have been so far futile. Lowly ranked Bangladesh twice refused to tour over security fears last year, after initially agreeing for a short limited over series. Most of the countries are reluctant when they hear the name of Pakistan, especially after the Bangladesh ran away. They think when Bangladesh did not come how could they tour, said Ashraf.Pakistan last year managed to host an International World XI comprising mostly of retired players from Sri Lanka, South Africa and the West Indies, but the short series failed to restore the confidence of international teams.

Taylor in record score, Bangladesh hit back

Posted:

HARARE (AFP) - Captain Brendan Taylor marked Zimbabwes Independence Day with a record-breaking score, but Bangladeshs bold reply with the bat allowed them to end day two of the first Test with the initiative.Taylors 171 formed the backbone in a Zimbabwean total of 389 all out, before Bangladesh responded positively to go to stumps on 95 for one with Jahurul Islam unbeaten on 38 and Mohammad Ashraful on 23 not out.Taylors eight-hour epic was also the highest Test score by a Zimbabwean captain, eclipsing Andy Flowers 156 against Pakistan at the same Harare Sports Club venue in 1995, and the eighth best by any Zimbabwean.Batting coach Grant Flower, who played 67 Tests for Zimbabwe and scored a double-century himself, rated Taylors knock as one of the finest in his countrys history. It was definitely up there around the top, said Flower. He showed amazing application, and I think he changed his game -- especially yesterday -- to the type of wicket he was playing on.Theres always been a lot of pressure on him as one of the best batsmen in the side, if not the best, which is pretty similar to what Andys situation was.Taylor had shared in a century stand with Malcolm Waller on the first day, and enjoyed another one with Graeme Cremer on the second to keep Zimbabwe ticking along -- albeit at a slow scoring rate. After resuming on their overnight total of 217 for four, with Taylor on 105, the hosts lost Elton Chigumbura and Richmond Mutumbami in quick succession at the start of the days play before Cremer provided sturdy support in a 107-run partnership for the seventh wicket.Although Taylor and Cremer departed in the space of three deliveries, with the latter dismissed for 42, Keegan Meth and Shingirai Masakadza prolonged the innings by adding 21 runs apiece.Whereas Zimbabwe had batted cautiously for the majority of their innings, with the run-rate never rising above 2.7 per over, Bangladeshs openers opted for a more aggressive approach. We thought that the wicket looked a bit better after the first session yesterday, and that its a really good pitch now, Enamul Haque said.We can still win this match if we think positively. While their approach nearly led to a dismissal in the first over when Jahurul was dropped at third slip by Cremer off the bowling of Kyle Jarvis, it unsettled the rhythm of Zimbabwes bowlers and ensured a brisk start.Jarvis did enjoy success when he induced a leading edge from Shahriar Nafees that was snaffled by Timycen Maruma at point, but the fast bowler was also guilty of bowling too full and conceded 39 runs in his eight overs.
