Raja given conditional permission to contest By Wajih Ahmad Sheikh LAHORE, April 18: A full bench of the Lahore High Court provisionally allowed on Thursday former prime minister Raja Pervez Ashraf to contest for the NA 51 Gujjar Khan (Rawalpindi) seat after suspending the orders of returning officer and election tribunal which had declared him ineligible. The bench headed by Justice Ijazul Ahsan and comprising Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Syed Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi issued a notice to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and directed it to include the name of the former premier in the list of candidates. It observed that the interim relief given to the petitioner would be subject to the final decision on his petition.
Senators call for exemplary punishment By Amir Wasim ISLAMABAD, April 18: Criticising the caretaker government for not arresting former president retired Gen Pervez Musharraf after cancellation of his bail by the Islamabad High Court, senators unanimously demanded on Thursday exemplary punishment for the former dictator for “committing national crimes”. In their hard-hitting speeches on points of order after completion of the day’s business, senators belonging to the mainstream political parties sought an explanation from the caretaker regime for providing the highest level of state security and “protocol” to the former military dictator.

BNP-M office attacked By Our Staff Correspondent QUETTA, April 18: A hand grenade was hurled on Thursday night at election office of the Balochistan National Party-Mengal (BNP-M) in Killi Kamalo, a locality on the outskirts of the provincial capital. Police said that men on a motorbike threw the grenade inside the office of the BNP-M. The office was damaged by the resulting explosion.
PPP never given level playing field in elections: ex-PMs By Ikram Junaidi ISLAMABAD, April 18: The PPP has never been provided a level playing field in the country’s electoral history, say former prime ministers Raja Pervez Ashraf and Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani.They were speaking at a news conference at the Zardari House on Thursday with leaders of Islami Tehreek-i-Pakistan (ITP), who announced support of their party for the PPP in the coming general elections. The ITP chief, Allama Sajid Naqvi, was represented at the press conference by the party’s secretary general, Allama Arif Hussain Wahidi.
21,000 polling stations declared sensitive By Iftikhar A. Khan ISLAMABAD, April 18: Of the more than 72,000 polling stations to be set up across the country for the general elections, over 21,000 have been declared sensitive. A total of 8,250 sensitive stations are in Sindh alone. Sources in the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) told Dawn that according to reports sent by provincial election commissioners after gathering data from district offices of the ECP, as many as 21,326 polling stations in different parts of the country were sensitive, with 10,273 of them being highly sensitive.
Iran hit by second quake TEHRAN, April 18: A 5.2-magnitude earthquake hit northwestern Iran on Thursday, only days after a deadly temblor struck near the border with Pakistan, media reported citing the seismological centre at Tehran University. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage in the latest quake which struck at 3.09pm, at a depth of eight kilometres, in the town of Tassouj.

Texas factory blast kills 15 WEST (US), April 18: A massive explosion at a Texas fertiliser factory killed as many as 15 people and levelled much of this small Texas town on Thursday as rescuers launched a door-to-door search for victims. With the country already on edge from Boston Marathon attacks, the factory blew up in a huge fireball late Wednesday, destroying scores of nearby homes.
