Musharraf to be presented before anti-terrorism court

Posted:

RAWALPINDI (Dunya News) - The former military ruler Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf will be presented before the anti-terrorism court today.Earlier, Pervez Musharraf was shifted to the police headquarters in Islamabad from his farmhouse residence at Chak Shahzad on Friday, hours after the former military ruler surrendered himself to the authorities in the judges’ detention case.He surrendered himself earlier today before appearing in the court of judicial magistrate Raja Abbas Shah in Islamabad. The judge issued an order for a two-day-long transit remand of Musharraf. The order also added clause 780-A pertaining to terrorism in the list of charges against the former army strongman.Meawnhile, the law ministry has issued the notification to form an anti-terrorism court in the federal capital. According to the notification, Session Judge Kausar Abbas Zaidi has been given the additional charge of the anti-terrorism court’s judge.During the hearing today, petitioner’s counsel, Advocate Mohammad Bilal Mughal, requested the court for a 15-day-long physical remand of the former president, whereas Musharraf’s lawyer, Qamar Afzal, asked for a judicial remand for his client. The court observed that the list of charges against Musharraf in the judges’ detention case entailed terrorism clauses which was why bail could not be granted to the retired general without him surrendering to authorities. Moreover, police told the court that Musharraf’s life was in danger which was why his farmhouse residence needed to be declared a sub-jail.Subsequently, the court added clause 780-A to the list of charges against Musharraf and ordered a two-day-long transit remand for the former president. An official at the court confirmed the order.A spokesman for Musharraf’s All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) party said: “General Musharraf has been sent on a two-day judicial remand and he will stay at his farmhouse.”APML spokesman Muhammad Amjad said the magistrate had ordered Musharraf to appear before an anti-terrorism court in Rawalpindi after two days.“Musharraf himself surrendered before the court Friday morning,” Amjad said, denying media reports that he had been arrested prior to going to court. It is the first time that the judiciary has ordered the arrest of a former army chief of staff.Musharraf had been on the run after fleeing from the premises of the Islamabad High Court in the wake of the cancellation of his bail on Thursday. Twenty-four hours had passed since Musharraf’s escape from the IHC.His bail was cancelled in the judges’ detention case by IHC’s Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui on Thursday. In its written judgement, the IHC had ordered that: “He (Musharraf) be taken into custody and dealt with in accordance with law.”

Maduro sworn in as Venezuela president

CARACAS (AFP) - Nicolas Maduro was sworn in as president of Venezuela on Friday, taking the oath of office in the memory of the late Hugo Chavez to cheers in the National Assembly.I swear it before the eternal memory of the supreme commander, he said after being read the oath by National Assembly speaker Diosdado Cabello.Cheers broke out in the packed assembly as the presidential sash was placed over the 50-year-old Maduro, who was elected president Sunday in snap elections to replace Chavez, who died of cancer on March 5 after 14 years in power.Close Chavez allies including Presidents Raul Castro of Cuba and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran watched the ceremony along with leaders from other Latin American countries who rallied around oil-rich Venezuelas new government.Fireworks fired by Maduro supporters boomed across the city in celebration but the fainter sound of pots being banged in protest could also be heard, recalling that his narrow victory has been challenged by the opposition.

Attacks kill 9 worshippers in Iraq

BAGHDAD (AP) - Mortar shells and bombs targeted worshippers shortly after noon prayers on Friday at two mosques north of Baghdad, killing nine people and wounding more than two dozen others, police said. Its unclear what prompted the attacks, but violence has been on the rise ahead of provincial elections set for Saturday. The vote is for local officials in several provinces across the country, including the capital, Baghdad. Authorities have pledged to bolster security for the elections.Police said the first attack occurred as worshippers left the Sunni mosque of al-Muthana in Khalis, a former stronghold of the Sunni insurgency about 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of Baghdad. Seven people were killed and 14 others were wounded when mortar shells destroyed the mosque.Later, in the city of Kirkuk, a roadside bomb exploded among Shiite worshippers as they were heading home after prayers at the al-Tamimi mosque. Police said two worshippers were killed and 14 others were wounded.Medics in nearby hospitals confirmed the dead toll. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to reporters. The new violence came a day after a suicide bombing attack on a Baghdad cafe killed 32 people and wounded dozens. The rare evening attack struck the third floor of a building in the predominantly Sunni neighborhood of Amiriyah while it was packed with young people enjoying water pipes and playing pool.

Brahimi urges UN action on Syria stalemate

Posted:

UNITED NATIONS (AFP) - UN-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi on Friday urged the Security Council to come together to address the conflict in Syria, as speculation swirled about his future as mediator.Brahimi told the 15-member council that Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad is not in a mood for dialogue and that the only hope for stemming the violence is if the council agrees unanimously on a plan of action, diplomats told AFP.The Security Council has been divided about how to proceed on Syria, which has been wracked by fighting since March 2011, with Russia and China repeatedly blocking efforts by the West to step up pressure on Damascus.Brahimi made his remarks amid rumors that he could resign after seven months of failed efforts to end the violence which has left tens of thousands of people dead. The veteran Algerian diplomat, who in the past has insisted he would not quit his post, was expected to meet with Arab League Secretary General Nabil al-Arabi early next week.A UN diplomat said he hoped Brahimi would remain, adding that from our point of view he is useful. He may be frustrated, but he symbolizes the possibility of a political settlement, the diplomat said on condition of anonymity. We hope he will stay and we will encourage him to do that.Assads regime has criticized Brahimi -- who has held the post since September 2012 -- and rumors have circulated that the envoy might resign entirely or at least drop his affiliation with the Arab League.Ban has refused to comment on whether Brahimi might resign, but said this week there was no such consideration of making him a purely UN envoy, adding that Brahimi has been and will continue to work as a joint representative.Diplomatic efforts by Brahimi and his predecessor -- former UN secretary general Kofi Annan -- have failed to halt the fighting in Syria, which has claimed more than 70,000 lives since early 2011, according to UN figures.Ban said earlier this week that a fact-finding mission was prepared to travel to Syria to investigate accusations about the use of chemical weapons in the conflict but had not received permission to enter from the government.

Nadal and Djokovic reach Monte Carlo semis

Posted:

MONACO (AP) - Rafael Nadal was pushed all the way by Grigor Dimitrov before winning his 45th straight match at the Monte Carlo Masters, reaching the semifinals with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 victory and staying on course for a rematch of last years final against Novak Djokovic. The top-ranked Djokovic had less of a struggle against Jarkko Nieminen, beating the Finnish veteran 6-4, 6-3 and getting through another test on his troublesome right ankle.Nadal dropped only his third set in his last five tournaments here the previous ones coming against Andy Murray in the 2011 semifinals and Djokovic in the 2009 final and he was under pressure at 30-30 in the eighth game of the final set before nailing a crucial serve.I know that when you have these tough matches, is decisive to keep fighting. If you keep fighting, you will lose some, but you will have a chance to win a lot of ones, Nadal said. So is very important (to) win these kinds of matches. That changes your year. I know that. I have experience on that. I always did well (in) these kinds of things.Nadal returned to action in February after a long spell out to recover from a left-knee injury, and the Spaniard said he is not still at his best even though he is still on course to reach a fifth straight final since his comeback.I didnt play tennis for seven months. I am losing little bit intensity of the match for moments. I need time. I think I need time to play with top rhythm all the match, Nadal said. So the body in general needs, I dont know, to adapt another time, readapt to the competition, to this high level of intensity. He is set to get another sharp test on Saturday, against sixth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France, while Djokovic takes on the unseeded Fabio Fognini of Italy. The Serb twisted his ankle two weeks ago while on Davis Cup duty against the United States, but said the injury was improving. It was great, very solid from the back of the court and played with a lot of intensity, Djokovic said. Its a big step for me.Its great, very positive news. I didnt feel the ankle was bothering me today. I was right there on the court. We played a lot of long rallies ... Im really glad things are going in the right direction.Nadal sealed the victory on his second match point with an ace, after Dimitrov saved the first one with a forehand winner of astonishing power from the back of the court, made even more spectacular as he was limping.Hes a great player and he has all the shots. He has everything to be a really, really good player. So depends on him,Nadal said. I think he has a similar style (to Roger Federer). Everybody can see that.As a 17-year-old, Dimitrov also took a set off Nadal at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam, Netherlands, and he thrilled the center court crowd with a superb display of attacking tennis punctuated by exquisite drop shots and ferociously struck winners off both backhand and forehand.By regularly taking the ball early, Dimitrov unsettled Nadals rhythm and the seven-time French Open champ was unable to dictate play.I felt I was also moving well and I think he was surprised that I was moving well, Dimitrov said. I actually wanted to play long rallies with him. He made a few mistakes here and there. Sensing an upset, the crowd roared when Nadals two-handed backhand flew into the net and Dimitrov leveled the match.Dimitrov got the crowd even more on his side with one blistering half-volley down the line early in the third, hitting it with such power and timing that it caught even Nadal off guard.Nadals relief was evident when he won. After hitting an ace he threw both hands up in the air and celebrated the win almost like he had won the final.Djokovic broke with a crosscourt winner to lead 5-4, before securing an early break in the second set to take control.Tsonga beat Stanislas Wawrinka 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, while Fognini downed seventh-seeded Richard Gasquet of France 7-6 (0), 6-2 to reach his first Masters semi.

Raikkonen fastest in second practice at Bahrain GP

Posted:

SAKHIR (AP) - Kimi Raikkonen showcased his championship credentials by clocking the fastest time in the second practice for the Bahrain Grand Prix followed by the Red Bulls of Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel on Friday.Raikkonen, who won the season-opening Australian GP in his Lotus and lay second behind Vettel in the drivers championship, was 0.03 seconds faster than Webber and 0.12 quicker than Vettel.Ferraris Fernando Alonso was fourth while his teammate Felipe Massa, who topped the charts in the first practice, settled for sixth.Force Indias Paul di Resta was a surprising fifth.Webber, racing in his 200th grand prix and looking to recover from a forgettable Chinese GP, was satisfied to be second fastest and get the edge on Vettel, who he has feuded with since the German overtook him to win the Malaysian GP. But, he added, just as important was gaining valuable insight into how the different tire compounds respond in the sandy conditions and 31-degree heat.I would have liked to have got some more running in P2, but I still think we learned what we expected today. Saturdays are perhaps becoming less important overall than they used to be, but theyre still important in terms of traffic, Webber said. You dont want to be in too much traffic on Sunday, as the tires dont like being disturbed and wear more, which will shorten your first stint - so you still need to be in a good position. We still have areas to improve on the car.Vettel predicted a very close qualifying session with Lotus and Ferrari on Saturday. Its important to work with the tires around the track, Vettel said. I wasnt so happy with my short runs - but thats why we have the Friday practice sessions. I was happier with the longer runs. The tires still seem to be the dominating factor. The car seems quick, so we have to make sure we use that and then we should be on the right page.Several drivers had trouble, including Mercedes Lewis Hamilton, who finished 10th, and McLarens Jenson Button, who came in 11th the latest setback for a team that has struggled to be competitive. We worked as hard as we could today but couldnt quite get the balance of the car to where it needs to be, Hamilton said. I had some issues in P1 which we were able to improve for this afternoon so thats a positive, but we need to identify where we are losing time and find more performance. We have changed the set-up of the car to what we thought would suit this track but we need to look at that and make sure it is the right direction to go.The session was largely uneventful, except for Saubers Esteban Gutierrez clipping his tire on the wing of Caterhams Charles Pic, forcing the Mexican back to the pits. Gutierrez has been slow to adjust to F1 and was penalized five grid places for the Bahrain race, after he was blamed for a collision with Force Indias Adrian Sutil in China. The race has been overshadowed to some degree by the political crisis in the divided Gulf country. While the circuit has been quiet, daily clashes have taken place in nearby Shiite villages between pro-democracy protesters and riot police. Hardline protesters hope to embarrass the ruling royal family with increased violence, while more moderate protesters, who support the race, merely want to highlight their demands for a greater voice in the country.Rights groups, meanwhile, have condemned the race going ahead amid allegations of crackdowns and widespread arrest of government opponents.Several teams, including Ferrari and McLaren, endorsed the decision to come to Bahrain amid a political crisis, and the FIA, the governing body of world motor sports, gave the OK to race on Sunday. It said the Bahrain GP should proceed following assurances from the local promoter and the authorities that security, their responsibility, will be guaranteed for all participants. The FIA and FOM also strongly believe that sport can often be a force for good and that the staging of the grand prix in Bahrain will come some way in helping soothe some of the issues which have been raised in the media, the FIA said in a statement.Formula One Boss Bernie Eccelstone scoffed at reports of trouble, telling reporters you guys are the ones who write about the rubbish. Have you found any?Looks all right, doesnt it? he said. I think anyone who really wants to see and talk about human rights should go to Syria, maybe. There are plenty of places in the world like Egypt where they got rid of dictators and put democracy in. Since then, there has been more trouble.

Sun-powered plane completes California test flight

Posted:

MOUNTAIN VIEW (AP) - A solar-powered plane that has wowed aviation fans in Europe took to the skies Friday over the San Francisco Bay area in a successful test flight.Considered the worlds most advanced sun-powered plane, the Solar Impulse took off from Moffett Field in Mountain View at first light for a two-hour practice run in advance of a planned multi-city, cross-country tour.Thats a mythical step in aviation, André Borschberg, one of the planes pilots and creators, said about flying cross-country. We are something like between 1915 and 1920, compared to traditional aviation, when pioneers tried these non-stop flights. He said a flight around the world could occur in two years. The Solar Impulse is powered by about 12,000 photovoltaic cells that cover massive wings and charge its batteries, allowing it to fly day and night without jet fuel. It has the wing span of a commercial airplane but the weight of the average family car, making it vulnerable to bad weather. Its creators say the Solar Impulse is designed to showcase the potential of solar power and will never replace fuel-powered commercial flights. The delicate, single-seat plane cruises around 40 mph and cant fly through clouds.Borschberg and Bertrand Piccard, Solar Impulse co-founder and chairman, said the plane should be ready for the cross-country journey on May 1, depending on the weather. We like nice weather. We like sunny days, Borschberg said.Stops are planned in Phoenix, Dallas, Washington, D.C., and New York. Each flight leg will take 20 to 25 hours, with 10-day stops in each city.Between Dallas and Washington, the plane will also stop at one of three other cities Atlanta, Nashville or St. Louis.Borschberg said the planes creators are close to being able to launch the non-stop flights needed to go around the world.Using solar power, we are close to the notion of perpetual flight, he said.

Russian becomes world's oldest spacewalker at 59

CAPE CANAVERAL (AP) - A 59-year-old Russian cosmonaut became the worlds oldest spacewalker Friday, joining a much younger cosmonauts son for a little maintenance work outside the International Space Station.Pavel Vinogradov, a cosmonaut for two decades, claimed the honor as he emerged from the hatch with Roman Romanenko. The pair installed new science equipment, and worked at gathering old experiments and replacing a navigation device.Until Friday, the oldest spacewalker was retired NASA astronaut Story Musgrave, who was 58 when he helped fix the Hubble Space Telescope in 1993.Romanenko, 41, is a second-generation spaceman whos following in his fathers bootsteps. Retired cosmonaut Yuri Romanenko performed spacewalks back in the 1970s and 1980s. This is the sons first experience out in the vacuum of space.Vinogradov is making his seventh spacewalk; he ventured into a dark, ruptured chamber at Russias old Mir space station in 1997 following a cargo ship collision. He will turn 60 aboard the space station this summer. He arrived for a six-month stay at the end of March. The spacewalkers joked as they toiled 260 miles above the planet.Im afraid of the darkness, one of them said in Russian as the space station passed over the night side of Earth.Oh, youre such a joker, replied his partner.I dont like going to work at nighttime. Who likes it? the first cosmonaut said. This is the first of eight spacewalks to be conducted this year, most of them Russian. Two will be led by NASA this summer.Russian flight controllers outside Moscow oversaw Fridays action. The four other space station residents monitored the activity from inside; Canadian commander Chris Hadfield drew the short straw and had to work on a balky toilet.
