Bar on mobile phones in polling stations: Last day for parties to woo voters

ISLAMABAD, May 8: Political parties will hold their last meetings in support of their candidates on Thursday when campaigning for May 11 elections will come to an end.

There was confusion about the time when the campaign is required to end because of ECP’s announcement that all forms of canvassing would have to end 48 hours before polling. But an official of the Election Commission of Pakistan clarified that the provision meant 48 hours before closing (and not opening) of polling.

ECP, presidency at loggerheads over security, PPP allegations

ISLAMABAD, May 8: The Presidency and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) are at loggerheads over the issue of providing security to the three mainstream political parties which are being persistently attacked by the Taliban as well as complaints by the PPP (Parliamentarians) about “biased attitude” of some members of the commission.

President Asif Ali Zardari wrote a confidential letter to Chief Election Commissioner Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim on April 30 drawing his attention to some issues which, according to him, would have disastrous consequences if left unaddressed.

Terrorist held, 4 killed in encounter

PESHAWAR, May 8: Two policemen, a woman and a terrorist were killed and another terrorist arrested with a suicide vest during an encounter in Rasheed Garhi area on Wednesday evening.

According to an official, terrorists hurled grenades at police when they launched an operation in the locality.

Minister, former chief of OGDC trade charges

ISLAMABAD, May 8: In a rare development, caretaker Petroleum Minister Sohail H. Wajahat Siddiqui and recently sacked managing director of the country’s largest fuel producer the Oil and Gas Development Company (OGDCL) — Masood Siddiqui have openly accused each other of misappropriation of public funds and violation of rules.

While the former OGDCL chief has challenged his sacking and termed it a violation of corporate rules of Pakistan and the United Kingdom — the company is listed on the stock exchanges of both the countries — the minister has said that his appointment about a year ago had been made in violation of government rules.

Two ANP activists killed in Bajaur attack

KHAR, May 8: Yet another attack on the Awami National Party (ANP) left its two activists dead and one injured in Amankot area of Bajaur tribal region on Wednesday.

A powerful blast took place at the gate of the house of ANP leader Syed Abdul Manan, alias Kaka Jee, where a party meeting was under way, witnesses and administration officials said.

Ban on use of ACs in govt offices

ISLAMABAD, May 8: Prime Minister Mir Hazar Khan Khoso introduced on Wednesday the summer dress code for the federal government employees as a ban on the use of air conditioners in offices will be enforced from May 15.

A directive issued by Prime Minister House said the ban would continue till there was substantial improvement in the energy situation.

Rs650m electricity dues recovered

ISLAMABAD, May 8: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has recovered Rs650 million from electricity bill defaulters, with the receivable amount being Rs77 billion. The number of defaulters is 63,000.

A NAB spokesman did not agree that the recovery of only Rs650m from the outstanding Rs77bn was ‘unsatisfactory’ and said: “The process is continuing but everybody knows that these are chronic cases in which recovery has always remained difficult. Therefore, the recovery of Rs650m is not bad.” He said a number of arrests had been made since the expiry of April 19 deadline.

Warning to Waziristan women

MIRAMSHAH, May 8: An unknown group on Wednesday warned that women in a restive tribal region should not vote in elections, threatening punishment.

“The people of Waziristan are hereby warned that they should not allow their women to cast votes and shouldn’t let any candidate influence them,” said a pamphlet.

5 Levies men kidnapped

QUETTA, May 8: Gunmen kidnapped five personnel of the Levies force after blowing up their post in Johaan area of Kalat district on Wednesday.

The unidentified armed men entered the building of post (thana) and placed explosive devices there and detonated them. “The building was blown up by the powerful explosion,” sources said, adding that attackers took away five Levies personnel.
