Federer loses to Nishikori at Madrid Open Posted: MADRID (AP) - Second-ranked Roger Federer was ousted by Kei Nishikori of Japan 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 in the third round of the Madrid Open on Thursday, leaving Rafael Nadal as the clear title favorite. After recovering from Nishikori's strong start on the Caja Magica's new red clay courts, Federer looked like he'd found his stride as he roared back in the second set.But Nishikori reasserted his ground game in the decider after breaking the defending champion for a 3-1 advantage and held on for the surprising victory to reach the quarterfinals.Nishikori said beating Federer after losing their only previous meeting was one of the high points of his still young career. He was my idol and to beat him was one of the goals for my tennis career, the 16th-ranked Nishikori said. Beating Roger is, yeah ... I need a couple of days to celebrate.Federer's early exit means Nadal is the apparent front-runner after world No. 1 Novak Djokovic bowed out on Tuesday.Earlier, Nadal cruised into the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Mikhail Youzhny.Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova also reached the quarters in straight sets.Federer came to Madrid after a seven-week layoff. The Swiss star said the gusting winds hurt his game, but he gave all the credit to Nishikori. He was the better player today for sure, said Federer, who had also won here in 2006 and 2009. I was lacking control from the baseline and that carried through from start to finish. Overall I'm disappointed with my play.Federer said he will not change his plans, as he will now train for Rome and then the French Open. This was Nishikori's fourth win over a top-five opponent. He beat world No. 1 Djokovic in 2011 and has downed David Ferrer twice. Nishikori will play Pablo Andujar after he advanced when fellow Spaniard Daniel Gimeno-Traver retired.Nadal's commanding win over Youzhny featured an entire array of winning shots.Having already established control by stealing Youzhny's second service game, Nadal kept a point alive with a deft no-look backhand flick before nailing a winner down the line to hold his serve and delight his fans. The fifth-ranked Spaniard then broke Youzhny again by dinking the ball over the net while on the run, giving it so much backspin it twisted away from the Russian.Nadal, who is searching for his seventh straight final since returning from injury, improved to 28 wins and two losses on the year. He will next play either Ferrer or Tommy Haas.Nadal said he was still bothered by his left knee that had sidelined him with a nagging case of tendinitis.Sometimes I have pain, Nadal said. I try to avoid talking about it as much as possible, whisper it. With respect to my rivals it's not the moment to analyze how I am.Also, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga rallied back to eliminate Fernando Verdasco of Spain 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, while Tomas Berdych defeated Kevin Anderson of South Africa 7-6 (5), 7-5, to make the final eight. In the women's event, the top-seeded Williams dispatched Maria Kirilenko 6-3, 6-1, after Sharapova put away Germany's Sabine Lisicki 6-2, 7-5.Despite slowing her usually blistering serves, Williams' dominant performance made Kirilenko wither after she dropped the first set with one of several unforced errors.I just felt really relaxed, like I was taking my time, said Williams, adding that she went for precision over speed on serve. The defending champion battered Kirilenko with her strong return game, working the 12th-ranked Russian back and forth with her precise forehand drives.I had been missing my serve when I was hitting it harder, so I took some pace off, Williams said. It was easy because when you take off pace you don't hit as hard and don't exhaust as much energy. And hitting a serve or a winner are both fun.Williams will take on local favorite Anabel Medina Garrigues, who advanced after Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan withdrew with a right arm injury.Sharapova will face Kaia Kanepi of Estonia next after she defeated Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia 6-3, 6-4.Ekaterina Makarova of Russia beat Marion Bartoli 6-3, 6-2 and will play either Sara Errani or Varvara Lepchenko. Angelique Kerber of Germany meets former No. 1 Ana Ivanovic also in the quarterfinals.
Formula One: Ferrari ready for title now, says Alonso Posted: BARCELONA (AFP) - Fernando Alonso is set to go on the attack in his home Spanish Grand Prix this weekend for the first time since he joined Ferrari -- and remains optimistic that he can mount a serious bid for his third world title.Speaking on the eve of opening free practice for the first European race of the year, the 31-year-old Spaniard said he hoped he could win his home event for a second time, but stressed that he would need to enjoy a trouble-free weekend.I think that maybe it's the first time we arrive with a competitive car, but that doesn't mean you will fight for top places if you don't do everything right and don't put together a good weekend, he told reporters at the Circuit de Catalunya. In the first four races we were competitive. We thought we could fight for the top places if the race was without problems. We will try here to have a clean race with no problems and if that will be enough to put us in contention for the victory it would be be nice. But if it's not possible then we will try and be as high as possible. It is a weekend we approach with a positive mentality -- and not a defensive mentality like the first three years for me at Ferrari.Alonso's only previous win on home soil came in the 2006 Spanish Grand Prix when he was with Renault. After the season-opening four 'flyaway' races in Australia, Malaysia, China and Bahrain, Alonso trails defending triple world champion Sebastian Vettel by 30 points in the drivers' title race. But he said he felt confident -- thanks to the performances of his competitive Ferrari car.Last year we were one second or 1.5 seconds behind the top cars and we won by luck the race of Malaysia, he said. This year we finished two races without problems and we finished second in Australia and won in China. It is a very different feeling and a different package we have this year, which brings us a good feeling that we can have a good championship. We are some points behind now, but the championship is long so I am condident for the future.
Man United hires Moyes to replace Ferguson Posted: MANCHESTER (AP) - The job of coaching one of football's most iconic teams has been granted to David Moyes, a former professional player who will have to step into the shoes of fellow Glaswegian Alex Ferguson.Manchester United chose an unglamorous coach to take over from the 71-year-old Ferguson, seeking long-term success by awarding Moyes a six-year contract on Thursday.Moyes and Ferguson come from identical backgrounds and were raised on the tough streets of Scotland. Both have reputations for enjoying confrontation and strong discipline.Moyes will arrive from Everton, never having won a trophy there, to take over the reins on July 1 of a United side fresh from its 13th Premier League title under Ferguson. And as with everything else at United, the retiring Ferguson played a key role in the decision, recommending his fellow Scot to build on the foundations for success he has laid at Old Trafford since 1986.I am delighted that Sir Alex saw fit to recommend me for the job, Moyes said in a statement. I have great respect for everything he has done and for the football club. After 11 years at Everton operating on a modest budget, the 50-year-old Moyes has been given a chance to prove he can cut it at the highest level by filling the shoes of a manager who has produced nearly 50 trophies for United.I know how hard it will be to follow the best manager ever, Moyes said. But the opportunity to manage Manchester United isn't something that comes around very often.United has shown its confidence in Moyes, who, like Ferguson, has a keen eye for emerging talent, snubbing more famous coaches like Jose Mourinho of Real Madrid. We have secured a man who is committed to the long-term and will build teams for the future as well as now, said former United striker Bobby Charlton, a club director. Stability breeds success. David has tremendous strength of character and recognizes the importance of bringing young players through and developing them alongside world-class talent. At United, I think David will be able to express himself.United has looked at how Moyes has kept Everton in the upper echelons of the Premier League without spending heavily rather than his lack of silverware. When we discussed the candidates that we felt had the right attributes we unanimously agreed on David Moyes, Ferguson said. David is a man of great integrity with a strong work ethic. The former Celtic player made the transition into management at Preston North End in 1998 and gained promotion to the League Championship two years later. He moved to Everton in 2002 and turned the Merseyside club from a relegation contender into a regular qualifier for Europe. In 2005, he even guided the club into the qualifying rounds of the Champions League.Qualifying for the Champions League every year and maintaining United as a force in global football is a must for the Glazer family owners. The Americans need to ensure that the club, which is listed on the New York Stock Exchange, can service debts that stood at 367.6 million pounds ($572 million) in the latest financial report. His hard-working style and steely determination are characteristics we value at the club, co-chairman Joel Glazer said of Moyes. He has impressed as a coach for many years now and we strongly believe he will be able to take up from where Alex is leaving off by continuing this club's tradition of flair football played by exciting, world class players.Moyes has never had the chance to operate on a big budget, having to sell top talent including Wayne Rooney to United in 2004 when offers proved too hard to resist for Everton's owners. He won't have to sell players, it must be like being a kid in a candy shop for somebody like David Moyes, who's had to work within constraints, former United defender Gary Pallister said.Even before Ferguson announced his retirement plans, Rooney told the manager two weeks ago that he wanted to seek a fresh challenge away from the club. But with two years remaining on the striker's contract, United stressed that Rooney is not for sale.Moyes' first games in charge will be on the preseason tour of Thailand, Australia, Japan and Hong Kong in July.
Lionel Messi biopic planned for 2014 World Cup Posted: LOS ANGELES (AFP) - US filmmakers are to make a biopic about Argentinian football legend Lionel Messi, to be released around the time of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.Beverly Hills-based Epic Pictures Group said it has acquired the rights to a biography of the Barcelona star, Messi: The Inside Story of the Boy Who Became a Legend. The film will be a dramatization based on the book by European sports journalist Luca Caioli, rather than a documentary. Epic will finance and produce it, and are looking for a writer and director.Caioli drew on interviews with family, coaches and teammates for the book, which was originally titled Messi: The Boy who could not Grow -- a reference to growth hormone deficiency he suffered as a boy. Ultimately, this is a Rocky-style tale about a young boy from humble beginnings who overcomes his physical shortcomings to become one of the greatest players of all time, said the film company. The book has been published in 32 countries in 31 languages. Luca Caioli said: I am very excited to be working with Epic Pictures Group on this powerful story.Epic Pictures chief executive Patrick Ewald added: The goal is to make a powerful and positive film that will leave audiences feeling inspired to go after their dreams no matter how impossible they may seem. The company noted, in its release about the Messi film, that it recently won acclaim for Big Ass Spider by director Mike Mendez, which premiered at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in Texas in March.
Rutherford happy to feel big chill for Kiwis Posted: LONDON (AFP) - New Zealand opener Hamish Rutherford thrived in the chilly conditions of Leicester, hitting a century for a confidence boost ahead of next week's first Test against England at Lord's.Rutherford ended the first day of the tour game against England Lions at Grace Road unbeaten on 116 as New Zealand reached 184 for three on a day curtailed by rain to just 44 overs. It was an innings which contained 16 fours and four sixes and followed on from his double century against England in Dunedin in February on his Test debut. It was fresh out there today, admitted Rutherford of the chilly Leicester weather.
Oil price drifts lower on jobs, stronger dollar Posted: NEW YORK (AP) - The price of oil fell Thursday, as the dollar strengthened against some foreign currencies and concerns grew about inflation in China.Benchmark oil for June delivery lost 23 cents to finish at $96.39 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The dollar gained against other currencies; including the euro, the British pound and the Japanese yen, topping 100 yen for the first time in four years. Since oil is traded in dollars, a stronger dollar makes crude less appealing to investors using foreign currency.Energy markets may also be feeling some pressure from higher-than-expected inflation figures from China. Those rising prices could slow the economy of the worlds second-largest oil consumer. The Labor Department on Thursday reported the number of Americans who applied for unemployment benefits last week fell by 4,000 to a seasonally adjusted 323,000. Layoffs have receded to pre-recession levels. The less volatile four-week average dropped by 6,250 to 336,750, the lowest since November 2007, just before the Great Recession began.A more robust hiring environment suggests businesses will be consuming more energy, not to mention more people commuting to work.Brent crude, which is a benchmark for many international oil varieties, rose 13 cents to end at $104.47 per barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.
Dollar above 100 yen for first time in four years Posted: NEW YORK (AFP) - The US dollar topped 100 yen for the first time in more than four years on Thursday as Tokyos aggressive stimulus efforts to reflate the Japanese economy continue to depress its currency. The dollar at 1410 GMT was trading at 100.67 yen, up from 99.01 late Wednesday and below 78 yen in late September 2012. The dollar last traded above 100 yen in April 2009.The sharp increase in the dollar versus the yen follows an aggressive bond-buying program unveiled in April by Japans central bank that by some benchmarks dwarfs the size of US quantitative easing. The yen has fallen steadily since November, but the currencys drop accelerated in the wake of the Bank of Japanese stimulus plan, and currency watchers had widely expected the dollar to bust the 100 yen mark.Central banks around the world have increasingly turned to low interest rates and other stimulus measures to catalyze their slumping economies. On Thursday, South Korea became the latest country to surprise markets by cutting interest rates.
Bacteria infection breaks mosquito malaria chain Posted: WASHINGTON (AFP) - US scientists have found a way to infect mosquitoes with bacteria in order to break the chain of malaria transmission, according to research published Thursday in a leading scientific journal.A similar approach has helped cut back on dengue in some locations, and researchers hope that the findings could offer a path toward reducing malaria among the most common mosquitoes in the Middle East and South Asia. The bacterial infection is inheritable and could be passed on for as many as 34 generations of mosquitoes, rendering them immune to malaria parasites, reported experts from the National Institutes of Health in the journal Science.Scientists injected Anopheles mosquito embryos with Wolbachia, a common insect bacterium. When the mosquitoes matured, they bred the adult females with uninfected males. The infection endured for 34 generations of mosquitoes. The study ended at that point, so it remains unknown how much longer the bacterial infection would have been passed on, preventing malaria transmission.Researchers also tried introducing the bacterial infection in small numbers of adult mosquitoes, between five and 20 percent of females in a given population.Within eight generations, all of the mosquitoes were infected with the malaria-blocking infection. The evidence supports the potential of Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes as a malaria control strategy, said the study.Previous research has shown the bacterium could prevent malaria-inducing Plasmodium parasites from developing in Anopheles mosquitoes. But in this study, scientists were able to show for the first time that they could create mosquitoes with a stable Wolbachia infection that passed consistently from mother to offspring.Researchers also discovered that the infection killed malaria parasites both in the mosquitoes' guts and in the salivary glands, the main avenue for transmission to humans via mosquito bites.About 660,000 people die worldwide every year from malaria.
Hackers stole $45 million in ATM card breach Posted: NEW YORK (AP) - A gang of cyber-criminals stole $45 million in a matter of hours by hacking their way into a database of prepaid debit cards and then fanning out around the globe to drain cash machines, federal prosecutors said Thursday.Brooklyn U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch called it a massive 21st-century bank heist and compared its size to the Lufthansa heist in the late 1970s immortalized in the film Goodfellas. Lynch said the fraudsters had moved with astounding speed to loot financial institutions around the world.A security analyst said it was the biggest ATM fraud case she had heard of.Seven people are under arrest in the U.S. in connection with the case, which prosecutors said involved thousands of thefts from ATMs using bogus magnetic swipe cards. The accused ringleader in the U.S. cell, Alberto Yusi Lajud-Pena, was reportedly murdered in the Dominican Republic late last month, prosecutors said. More investigations are ongoing and other arrests have been made in other countries, but prosecutors did not have details. An indictment unsealed Thursday accused the eight of being members of the New York cell, saying they withdrew $2.8 million in cash from hacked accounts in less than a day. One of the suspects was caught on multiple surveillance cameras, his backpack increasingly loaded down with cash. Others took photos of themselves with giant wads of bills as they made their way up and down Manhattan.Lynch said the cells would take a cut of the money then launder it through expensive purchases or ship it wholesale to the global ringleaders, but didn't say where they were located. Prosecutors said the scheme involved attacks on two banks, Rakbank, which is in the United Arab Emirates, and the Bank of Muscat in Oman. Hackers obtained debit card data, eliminated withdrawal limits on the accounts, created access codes and then sent a network of operatives fanning out to rapidly withdraw money in multiple cities, authorities said.Lynch called it a virtual criminal flash mob. She said they could use any plastic card to withdraw the cash an old hotel key card or an expired credit card as long as they had the account data and correct access codes. There were two separate attacks, one in December and one in February. In the second attack, more than 36,000 transactions were made worldwide and about $40 million was stolen.Lynch would not say who masterminded the attacks globally, who the hackers are or where they were located, citing an ongoing investigation. The seven men arrested were U.S. citizens originally from the Dominican Republic, lived in Yonkers, north of New York City, and were mostly in their 20s. Lynch said they all knew each other and were recruited together, as were other cells in other countries. They were charged with conspiracy and money laundering. If convicted they face 10 years in prison.Law enforcement agencies in Japan, Canada, Germany, Romania and 12 other countries have been involved in the investigation, U.S. prosecutors said.Arrests began in March. Lajud-Pena was found dead with a suitcase full of about $100,000 in cash. The investigation into his death is also continuing separately.Avivah Litan, an analyst who covers security issues for Gartner Inc., said similar ATM fraud schemes are not uncommon, but the $45 million stolen in this one was at least double the amount involved in previous, known cases. Middle Eastern banks and payment processors are a bit behind on security and screening technologies that are supposed to prevent this kind of fraud, but it happens around the world, she said. It's a really easy way to turn digits into cash, Litan said. Some of the fault lies with ubiquitous magnetic stripes on the back of the cards. The rest of the world has largely abandoned cards with magnetic strips in favor ones with built-in chips that are nearly impossible to copy. But because U.S. banks and merchants have stuck to cards with magnetic stripes, they are still accepted in many places in the world. In 1978, $5.8 million in cash was stolen from a Lufthansa Airlines vault at John F. Kennedy International Airport, a heist masterminded by Jimmy Burke, the inspiration for Robert De Niro's character in Goodfellas.
ICC moves to clarify vote amid fixing claims Posted: JOHANNESBURG (AP) - The International Cricket Council fended off allegations of vote fixing on Thursday and said confusion over procedures was the reason for a re-vote in a troubled election for one of its committees. The mechanics of Laxman Sivaramakrishnan's victory over longtime players' representative Tim May for a place on the ICC's Cricket Committee was viewed by critics, however, as evidence of India's powerful influence over the sport and the governing body's continued favoring of its richest member.Having announced Sivaramakrishnan as a new member of the committee on Monday following votes by the 10 test captains, the ICC denied on Thursday it had any evidence to back up allegations that some of those captains may have been pressured to choose the former India international and India's preferred candidate because of the might of the Indian cricket board, the BCCI.The international cricketers' association, of which May is the chief executive, has fears that five countries may have told their captains to vote for Sivaramakrishnan or even ordered them to change an initial vote for May to follow the line of India, the commercially dominant country in cricket.May's Federation of International Cricketers' Association asked the ICC to investigate through its ethics committee and made a scathing attack on the ICC this week when it referred to very serious shortcomings in governance at the international body. The story, with accusations of vote fixing and a powerful governing body apparently reluctant to investigate itself or change, has parallels with the criticism currently being leveled at world football's top decision-makers at FIFA.The ICC confirmed on Thursday that it received the written request from FICA to refer the election process to its ethics officer and said this request is being considered, although the lack of evidence, according to the ICC, might curtail any investigation. In view of the allegations already appearing in the media, the ICC wishes to state for the record that the re-vote took place according to the determined procedure and that the ICC has seen no evidence that supports allegations now being made that captains were put under pressure by their member boards to vote for a particular individual, the Dubai-based governing body said in a statement. The re-vote was required, the ICC said, because of uncertainty over the process if there was a tied vote and which player should be allowed to vote in countries that have different captains for the test and one-day formats. The ICC wishes to state for the record that the re-vote took place according to the determined procedure and that the ICC has seen no evidence that supports allegations now being made, it said.India's dominance of cricket's upper levels has been long accepted because of the country's huge, cricket-mad population and resulting commercial strength. India also has significant influence over other cricket-playing countries and often gets their backing because of its ability to enrich them with series against India's hugely popular national team. In the same way, the BCCI can take away those series.Tony Irish, a board member of FICA and the South African Cricketers' Association chief executive, raised initial concerns over Sivaramakrishnan's election last week, saying the first result of the voting favored May and a re-vote was ordered because of India's displeasure with the result. May was not popular with the BCCI, Irish said.Irish also told The Associated Press that South Africa test captain Graeme Smith had been asked to vote three times, contradicting the ICC's stance that there were two votes. Irish has called the situation a sad day for cricket because players weren't able to freely choose their own representatives. And FICA's response to the announcement of Sivaramakrishnan as the new committee member was scathing, with president and former West Indies captain Jimmy Adams criticizing the ICC for not changing its ways and following the reform recommendations of the Woolf Report, which was submitted over a year ago.(ICC) Executives have stood aside while apparently watching their own process corrupted by their own board members, Adams said of the Sivaramakrishnan vote process. In the meantime, (the) ICC constantly tells the world it has a 'zero tolerance' approach to corruption in cricket and constantly tries to impress the 'Spirit of Cricket' on participants. How can the players of the world look to (the) ICC for leadership in these circumstances and how does the spirit of cricket apply to the organization itself? Board members didn't like how their captains intended to vote, so they apparently ordered them to change that vote. The ICC said it wouldn't comment further on allegations against its voting procedure while it considered FICA's request for an investigation.
