Three killed in attacks on two PML-N candidates By Saleem Shahid QUETTA, May 9: Two security personnel and a civilian were killed and five others injured in armed attacks on two PML-N candidates in Turbat and Dera Murad Jamali on Thursday. According to Levies sources, the PML-N candidate for PB-50 Kech, Akbar Askani, was going to Mand town along the Pak-Iran border from Turbat in connection with his election campaign when gunmen hiding in the mountains opened fire at his convoy.
Ali Haider Gilani, son of former PM, kidnapped By Shakeel Ahmad MULTAN, May 9: In a stunning development, Ali Haider Gilani, a son of former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and a candidate for the Punjab Assembly, was kidnapped by gunmen here on Thursday. His two associates were killed in the process. When Ali Haider Gilani was leaving after attending a street corner meeting outside the house of a supporter at Matti Tal Road in Farrukh Town, a hail of gunfire resounded across the area.
Imran’s video speech electrifies crowd By Khawar Ghumman ISLAMABAD, May 9: The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) wound up its election campaign with an impressive rally at D Chowk in front of the Parliament House here on Thursday. SC issues contempt notice to Premier Khoso By Nasir Iqbal ISLAMABAD, May 9: Caretaker Prime Minister Mir Hazar Khan Khoso may be having sleepless nights because of concerns for holding elections in an orderly manner, but another trouble is in store for him. The Supreme Court issued on Wednesday contempt notices against him and other senior civil officers for violating one of its judgments. “Prima facie the premature transfer [and] posting of at least 20 senior government officers seems to violate the Anita Turab case [judgment],” observed a three-judge bench headed by Justice Jawwad S. Khawaja.
Man dies in blast at candidate’s office Dawn Report MIRAMSHAH/BUNER, May 9: A man was killed and six others were injured in a bomb explosion at the office of an independent candidate for NA 41 in South Waziristan tribal region on Thursday. According to sources, displaced supporters of Maulvi Jamaluddin Mehsud had gathered at his election office in Mirali to be transported to Tank district for casting votes on Saturday. Three buses, arranged by the candidate, were parked in front of it.
Ex-chief of Wapda held in Bosnia on corruption charge By Syed Irfan Raza ISLAMABAD, May 9: Flexing its muscles, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Thursday announced that a former army general allegedly involved in corrupt practices while holding key offices in the late 1980s had been detained in Bosnia with the help of Interpol. Retired Lt Gen Zahid Ali Akbar, a former chairman of Wapda, was detained on charge of making Rs267 million assets beyond his known sources of income.
— Buried with state honours SIALKOT: Sanaullah was buried with state honours in his native Oora village on Thursday night. Apart from officials, thousands of people from Sialkot and nearby areas had gathered in the village. Gloom enveloped the city after a special plane carrying the body of Sanaullah from Chandigarh landed at the Sialkot airport at 6:45pm. According to DCO Mohammad Shakeel, the body was taken to Government Allama Iqbal Memorial Hospital where a board of senior doctors carried out a post-mortem.
Threat of May 11 attacks ISLAMABAD, May 9: The Pakistani Taliban plan to carry out suicide bombings during Saturday’s elections, according to a letter from the leader of the militant group. Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan leader Hakimullah Mehsud, in a message to the group’s spokesman, outlined plans for attacks, including suicide blasts, in all the four provinces.
Anti-election strike in Balochistan By Amanullah Kasi QUETTA, May 9: Business activities remained suspended in several cities of Balochistan on Thursday in response to a strike call by the banned Baloch National Front (BNF) to mobilise people to boycott the elections on Saturday. Hawkers did not distribute newspapers and trading centres remained closed in Nushki, Chagai, Mastung, Kalat, Khuzdar, Awaran, Hub, Panjgur, Gwadar, Kharan, Machh, Sibi, Dera Murad Jamali and Dera Allahyar.
