Altaf denies demanding Karachis separation Posted: KARACHI (Online) - Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Chief Altaf Hussain has, in an apparent damage control move, stated Monday that he did not make any demand for separation of Karachi from the country. In a policy statement issued on Monday, Altaf Hussain in an attempt to clarify his earlier stand said those hurling accusation in connection with his Sunday’s statement should view it in a proper context by obtaining its audio CD.The statement said: “How can Altaf Hussain issue an anti-Pakistan statement?”Addressing his party leaders and workers on Sunday, Altaf Hussain had said: “If the ‘establishment’ doesn’t accept his party’s mandate, it should go ahead and detach it from the rest of the country.”He had said, ‘instead of abusing Karachi and its people, separate Karachi from Pakistan’ and warned the ‘establishment’ that they were playing with fire. “If you didn’t stop playing with fire, it would burn down the entire Pakistan,” he snapped, and the same time added that he was not issuing any threats to anyone.“The nations which are pushed against the wall usually choose to build their separate home (land),” Altaf Hussain had warned. The MQM chief had dared anyone who was opposing his party to come up with evidence and warned that if opposition was not stopped, he would not take long to let his associates free to act on their own. “How can I control them and for how long,” he had added. In Monday’s statement, Altaf Hussain paid tributes to the staff of Election Commission of Pakistan and its chief Fakhruddin G Ebrahim for successful conduct of general elections in the country. He also congratulated the nation on the holding of general elections and continuity of democratic process. On Sunday, he had warned the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to reach a decision with honesty or else they will not be able to find any shelter.

She was also winless in Stuttgart last month.I really like the surface, the clay courts here are very light and the ball gets through the air pretty quickly, said the Australian. As long as its not too windy its great.Germanys Sabine Lisicki beat American Madison Burdette 6-1, 6-2, but German sixth seed Angelique Kerber withdrew prior to her opening match with an abdominal injury and was replaced by Lourdes Dominguez Lino of Spain.Chinas Peng Shuai defeated Romanian Monica Niculescu 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 while Italian Nastassja Burnett put out 2008 finalist Alize Cornet of France 6-2, 6-2.Amongst the men, Potito Starace set up his seventh career meeting with Roger Federer with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 comeback win over Czech Radek Stepanek.Starace, ranked 293 after reaching 27th on the ATP computer in 2007, needed nearly two-and-a-quarter hours to get past Stepanek, whom Federer beat last week in the second round in Madrid.Starace had lost both of his previous matches with the 34-year-old Czech, who underwent surgery in January to relieve pressure on a nerve in his neckFederer holds a 6-0 record over Starace, beating the home player in Rome at the Foro Italico in 2006 and earning a straight-sets victory in their last meeting indoors in Basel in 2011.While leading seeds waited to get started in the second round after byes, the big names at the joint event filled up the practice courts at the last-chance tune-up week prior to the start of the French Open on May 26.Frances Benoit Paire earned a second-round spot at the expense of Argentine Juan Monaco 7-6 (7/4), 1-6, 6-4 while Spaniard Albert Ramos defeated Czech Jan Hajaek 7-5, 6-0.Russian Andrey Kuznetsov advanced as Belgian veteran Xavier Malisse quit their match trailing 6-2, 3-1.Tenth seed Janko Tipsarevic withdrew with bronchitis and was replaced in the draw by Czech Lukas Rosol. |
Fans celebrate United's title win during parade Posted: MANCHESTER (AP) - In front of tens of thousands of flag-waving and chanting fans, Manchester United players and retiring manager Alex Ferguson paraded the Premier League trophy on an open-top bus through packed city streets on a second day of jubilant celebrations for the English champions.Supporters clambered dangerously up shop fronts, scaffolding, statues, bus stands and road signs to catch glimpses of Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney and, of course, Ferguson as the double decker bus bearing a Champions 2013 logo wound its way from Old Trafford to the city center. Some lines were 30-people deep and many buildings had roof tops crammed with fans, some of them shirtless.United players were spending a second day with the trophy after lifting it Sunday following the 2-1 win over Swansea Fergusons final game at Old Trafford after nearly 27 years in charge.Yesterday was a day Ill never forget, said Ferguson, who waved a United flag in front of supporters before the bus departed. All my family will never forget. On behalf of all my players, thanks for all your support.Rio Ferdinand conducted the chants among the players, who jumped up and down on the top deck under overcast skies. A vast police escort led the bus along the streets, with a helicopter above. It feels absolutely amazing ... its been worth the wait, said Van Persie, the striker and top scorer who won the title in his first season with United and was serenaded by teammates. Ive had to wait quite a long time.Despite recently having a transfer request rejected by United, Rooney was present, although he received a mixed reception from fans outside Old Trafford.Fergusons last game in charge is on Sunday against West Bromwich Albion and it promises to be a week-long celebration in honor of Britains most successful manager, who has won 38 trophies for United since joining the club in 1986.The Scot issued a challenge to his replacement, David Moyes, saying: The big test is to win it three times in a row as theyve done before, so I hope they can do that. And perhaps in one last dig at old rival Liverpool, he added: Tomorrow night our under-21s play Liverpool that mob across the road. The city center had been awash in red for hours, with fans draped in United flags blaring hooters and car drivers honking their horns. Scarf- and flag-sellers did a roaring trade on the Deansgate thoroughfare where the bus made its way down. The celebrations started early for Ferdinand, who posted a picture on Twitter of him and some teammates sitting in the corner of a local pub.Ferdinand had also been partying on Sunday night, tweeting at 3am on Monday: Just rolling in the front door Decent night out celebrating that was
Woods wins Players Championship Posted: PONTE VEDRA BEACH (AFP) - Tiger Woods shook off a double bogey at the 14th hole Sunday and held on to win the US PGA Tour Players Championship, setting another career milestone in the process.Woods, who had a share of the lead with Sergio Garcia and David Lingmerth after completing the weather-disrupted third round on Sunday morning, carded a final-round 70 for a 13-under par total of 275.That put him two strokes in front of Swedish PGA Tour rookie Lingmerth, Jeff Maggert and Kevin Streelman.Garcia, tied for the lead at the 17th, finished with a double bogey and a bogey, giving Woods the last laugh after a couple of days of verbal sparring by the two.Woods won the US tours flagship event, worth $9.5 million this year, for the second time -- more than a decade after his victory in 2001.Since then he had posted only one top-10 finish at TPC Sawgrass until Sunday.Woods notched his fourth PGA Tour title of the year, and its the earliest in a single season he has ever won a fourth title. His 78th tour win came in his 300th start -- he also won in his 100th and 200th starts.Woods had built a two-stroke lead through 13 holes of the final round, but he found the water off the tee at 14 and ended up with a double-bogey that dropped him into a four-way tie for the lead with Maggert, Garcia and Lingmerth.Garcia and Lingmerth, playing in the final group right behind Woods, had both just birdied 13.Just hit absolutely the worst shot I could possibly hit, Woods said of his tee shot at 14. But it was the only bad swing I made all day. I told myself I could still win the tournament. He made no more mistakes from there, adding a birdie at the par-five 16th to get to 13-under and finishing with back-to-back pars.Garcia got to 13-under with a birdie at 16.Garcia said before the final round he was happy not to be playing in the same group with Woods.I think its probably good for both of us, said Garcia after the pairs uneasy relationship took another hit on Saturday when the Spaniard complained that a move by Woods to remove a club from his bag just as Garcia was hitting a shot sparked distracting crowd noise. But playing with the little-known Lingmerth didnt do Garcia any good when it came to the par-three 17th, TPC Sawgrass signature hole with its island green.Garcia was in the water twice en route to a double-bogey seven, then took a double-bogey at 18 to cap a four-over 76 that left him tied for eighth on seven-under 281.Maggert fell back with a double-bogey at 17, closing with a two-under 70 for 11-under 277. Streelman carded a 67 to grab his share of second on 277.Lingmerth was the last player with a chance to challenge Woods, but he was unable to convert his birdie attempt at 17 and pull level and he closed with a bogey for an even-par 72 for 277.
Kerry hoping to visit Pakistan soon Posted: WASHINGTON (AFP) - US Secretary of State John Kerry is hoping to visit Pakistan soon, once the new government of incoming prime minister Nawaz Sharif is in place, a US official said Monday. The two men already spoke on the phone on Sunday, when the top US diplomat called Sharif to congratulate him on his strong showing in Saturdays elections, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters.Kerry also told Sharif that he looks forward to working with the government as the government is formed in Pakistan.Ties between the two countries soured after the killing of Osama bin Laden in 2011 by US Navy SEALS when he was tracked down to his compound in the Pakistani town of Abbottabad, after a decade on the run.The killing of 24 Pakistani soldiers in a US-led NATO air strike in November 2011 then led Islamabad to cut off land routes into Afghanistan used by US troops for re-supplying their forces.Ties were gradually mended, but tensions remained and one thorn in the relationship is US drone strikes targeting Taliban and Al-Qaeda militants in the northwestern tribal belt.Sharif has already promised Pakistans full support as the United States withdraws combat troops from Afghanistan, but said he would raise the issue of drone strikes with US leaders.Washington would be hoping to enhance its cooperation with Islamabad on issues such as counter-terrorism, once the government is formed, Psaki said.Sharif has indicated he wants to work closely with the US. We would like to have a positive, productive relationship as well on a number of these issues, Psaki said, adding that first the new government needed to be formed.
Lord Nazir Ahmed resigns from Labour Party Posted: LONDON (AP) - A member of Britains House of Lords quit the Labour Party on Monday, two days before he was due to face a hearing over allegations he made anti-Semitic remarks in a television interview.Nazir Ahmed was suspended from the Labour Party in March following a report that he blamed a Jewish conspiracy for his 2009 prison sentence for dangerous driving.Ahmed had insisted he did not recall making the alleged comments to an Urdu-language broadcaster in Pakistan, but was due to appear before Labours National Executive Committee on Wednesday about the accusations. His lawyer Stephen Smith said he did not think Ahmed would have received a fair trial from the Labour panel, and the party confirmed Monday that Ahmed had resigned. He remains a member of the House of Lords. The alleged remarks came to light when the Times of London said it had obtained footage of an Urdu-language TV interview where Ahmed blamed his 12-week prison sentence on pressure put on courts by Jewish-owned media organization. The controversy came a year after Ahmed was suspended from the Labour Party amid reports he offered a bounty for the capture of President Barack Obama comments he denied.
Carrots and turnips make music in Madrid veg market Posted: MADRID (AFP) - With a pumpkin for a drum, carrots for flutes and turnips for trumpets, musicians from Vienna transformed the fresh goods in a Madrid market into honking, whistling instruments on Monday.Visiting members of the Vienna Vegetable Orchestra marked the centenary of the San Miguel market in the centre of the Spanish capital by taking saws and drills to its vegetables, coring and boring holes in them to make wind instruments. The vegetables have to be fresh, and we basically work with all kinds of vegetables, said Ulrich Troyer, one of the group's 10 or so members. We invent every time some new possibilities to build instruments out of vegetables, added Troyer, a bespectacled young man with a ginger beard. The instruments can break during the show or get dry during the day so you have to have some back-up instruments.A hollowed-out celery root serves as a percussion instrument and a long white turnip with a green pepper on the end plays like a horn. Most serviceable of all the root crops is the humble carrot -- whether hollowed and blown, tapped with a drumstick, or slotted in as a mouthpiece in a turnip flute.Although a carrot may produce a tuneful whistle, few of the vegetable instruments really resemble anything found in a concert hall.We are not interested in building normal instruments, said Ulrich. We are more interested in inventing new instruments to create new sounds.Since its founding in 1998, the group has played jazz, modern classical music and electronica to audiences in Paris, Hong Kong, London and beyond.Although the group hails from one of the homes of European classical music, their vegetable sound is far from Mozart. In the market in Madrid the results -- showcased at the end of the day in a concert by the solemn-faced musicians, all in black -- sounded like an avant-garde blend of electronica and tribal rhythms. The challenge is to come to a place and to work with what we find there. Of course the eggplants in Asia are very different from Spanish eggplants, said Ulrich. We have to check what is available in the region, in the season of the year but usually there is not any problem to find material. After the concert, the vegetables were prepared for the Madrid audience to eat. Some groups do encores at the end, said Sandra Walkenhofer, the band's manager. We do vegetables and soup.
Drunk tourist charges at South Africa elephant Posted: JOHANNESBURG (AFP) - Video footage of an inebriated tourist lunging out of his car and charging a wild elephant at South Africa's famous Kruger National Park caused an uproar on Monday. The footage, posted on wildlife site Latest Sightings (www.latestsightings.com), showed the unidentified man charging towards the startled animal. With friends cheering and encouraging him, the man runs towards the elephant, falls to the ground but gets up again and bolts in the direction of the animal.Run at him right now, run, a voice of a fellow tourist is heard over the footage, which appeared to have been filmed by his colleagues. The elephant initially swings its trunk towards the man, but soon makes its escape. The man returns to his cheering friends.Latest Sightings said on its Facebook page that it received the video at the weekend but it was unclear when the incident occurred.Wild animals in the two-million-hectare park sometimes attack visitors and elephants have been known to overturn the cars of sightseers. The park's officials were not immediately reachable for comment, although wildlife advocates called for charges to be levelled against the tourist.
Oil falls to near $95 as dollar strengthens Posted: NEW YORK (AP) - The price of oil fell to near $95 a barrel on Monday, as the dollar continued to strengthen against the yen and other major currencies.Benchmark oil for June delivery fell 87 cents to finish at $95.17 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The stronger dollar is pushing down oil prices, analysts said. The dollar has risen in recent days against the euro and last week passed the 100-yen mark for the first time in four years.Since oil is traded in dollars, a stronger dollar makes crude and other commodities less appealing to investors with other currencies. This, like the stock market, ends up pulling a lot of money out of commodities and into more reliable risk, said Carl Larry, president of Oil Outlooks and Opinions, a research analysis firm.An increase in OPEC's output, which grew by 280,000 barrels to 30.46 million barrels a day in April compared with March, also helped drag down prices by boosting concerns about excess supply. And weak refining data from China further undercut crude. Government statistics showed China's refining output in April was the lowest since last August.Brent crude, which is a benchmark for many international oil varieties, was down $1.09 to end at $102.82 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.
Dollar higher, yen slips again after G7 meeting Posted: NEW YORK (AFP) - The US dollar edged higher Monday following last weeks strong gains and the yen slipped again after G7 finance chiefs reiterated over the weekend their pledge against competitive devaluations. At 2100 GMT, the euro traded at $1.2975, compared to $1.2992 late Friday, holding in a narrow range during a day with little news to move trade. The dollar picked up to 101.82 yen from 101.59, but pulled back from the 102-yen line in early trade, while the euro rose to 132.11 yen compared to 132.05 yen on Friday.Christopher Vecchio, currency analyst at DailyFX, said the market needed to take a breather on Monday.Commentary from the G7 meeting was roundly supportive of Japans policies, with the Japanese envoy declaring victory upon leaving London, gleefully noting that no G7 member was opposed to the countrys aggressive and fiscal easing policies. If the yen continues to weaken at its current pace, the G7 is likely to change its tune. But for now, theres little exogenous pushback. The British pound weakened, falling to $1.5298 from $1.5354, while the dollar pushed higher against the Swiss franc, to 0.9575 franc from 0.9560.
Champions Trophy: Pakistan team off to England Posted: LAHORE (AFP) - Pakistans cricket squad left for England early Tuesday, seeking to win next months Champions Trophy and avoid any repetition of the scandal that marred their last British tour in 2010.The spot-fixing scandal, disclosed by the now defunct News of the World, was related to the deliberate bowling of no-balls in return for money during the Lords Test against England. It resulted in bans on then-captain Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer as well as jail terms for the trio and their agent Mazhar Majeed.Pakistans manager Naveed Akram Cheema said the players had been briefed extensively to avoid any controversy. We have briefed the players that this is a very sensitive tour and they should maintain strict discipline as we dont want a repeat of 2010 events, Cheema told reporters.Players are told to restrict their off-the-field movement.A special vigilance officer will accompany the squad in addition to a regular security officer.Pakistan will play two one-day games each against Scotland and Ireland before competing in the eight-nation Champions Trophy in England from June 6-23.They are in group B along with arch-rivals India, the West Indies and South Africa. Holders Australia, England, Sri Lanka and New Zealand form group A.Captain Misbah-ul Haq, not a member of the fateful 2010 tour, said the team can succeed. I think there are no favourites for the trophy, he said.We have a talented team and if all the players play their roles accordingly, then we can win the tournament. We have selected a squad specifically for English conditions.Misbah said Pakistan have a balanced team, with a strong bowling attack. We have world-class spinners and some quality pace bowlers in Junaid Khan and Mohammad Irfan, but it is a matter of how we execute our plans and everybody does his job, he said.Pakistan have off-spinner Saeed Ajmal and left-arm spinner Abdul Rehman while opener Mohammad Hafeez also bowls off-spin.All-rounder Shahid Afridi and experienced batsman Younis Khan were not selected while spearhead Umar Gul was ruled out with a knee injury.Head coach Dav Whatmore also said the team will aim for the title. We always want to open a series or a tournament with a win and thats what we are going to do in the Champions Trophy, said Whatmore, a former Australian batsman. Our team is balanced and strong and we have prepared well for the event.
India denies pulling out of Champions Trophy Posted: NEW DELHI (AP) - A top Indian cricket board official denied on Monday that India would pull out of the Champions Trophy if the ICC told its ethics committee to look into the controversial selection of Laxman Sivaramakrishnan to its cricket committee.Rajiv Shukla, who is vice president of Board of Control for Cricket in India, discounted the rumors on NDTV by saying, India will take part in the Champions Trophy.Former Indian Premier League chairman Lalit Modi had tweeted on Monday that Twitter is buzzing with bcci threatening to pull out of champions trophy. If ICC were to refer Tim May complaint to ethics committee.Sivaramakrishnan replaced May on the cricket committee after the captains of 10 test playing countries voted twice.Last week the ICC said it had received a written request from the Federation of International Cricketers Association (FICA) to refer the election process to its ethics officer and said this request is being considered. The FICA, of which May is the chief executive, feared that five countries may have told their captains to vote for Sivaramakrishnan or even ordered them to change an initial vote for May to follow the line of India. And Modi accused BCCI president N. Srinivasan of manipulating the voting process in another tweet. This just goes to show what power hungry Srini will do destroy cricket for personal gain or to bury what he does. Shameful to say the least, Modi tweeted. Hope ICC sends a strongest message back to Bcci. We will protect the game and do the inquiry. We will not cow down to Bcci. Enough is enough.
Southee gets all clear for first England Test Posted: LONDON (AFP) - New Zealand seamer Tim Southee has been passed fit to play in the first Test against England at Lords on Thursday. The 24-year-old paceman limped out of action during last weeks drawn match with the second-string England Lions in Leicester, the tourists final match before the first of a two Test series that culminates later this month at Headingley. But having had a scan on the sore left toe that was hampering him and seen a specialist, Southee has now been given the all clear.Had he been sidelined, the tourists would have had to lean heavily on left-arm quicks Trent Boult and Neil Wagner, who starred in the drawn 0-0 series across three Tests against England in New Zealand two months ago, and the fit-again Doug Bracewell. However, with 24 Tests behind Southee is a seasoned Test player and New Zealand coach Mike Hesson was glad to have him available for the series opener.Tims fine. It was very much a precautionary response really from us, Hesson said Monday. We sent him down to London for further investigation, and basically the result was as we hoped.Hes had some treatment to his left toe, and were very comfortable hell be right for the first Test.Wagner might have played in any case, as New Zealands leading wicket-taker in the three recent draws. He too has recovered from a minor toe injury and Hesson said: It will be very hard to leave him out.Neil is very much in consideration to play.Early season conditions in England often favour seamers and Hesson said naming a four-man attack without left-arm spinner Bruce Martin.Absolutely. Thats an option, added Hesson.Whoever is left out, it will be a tough decision. On the batting front, New Zealand will look to the stylish Ross Taylor to play to his true potential. The former captain was rarely at his best during the series in New Zealand where he returned to the side following a brief self-imposed exile caused by the bungled way in which he was replaced as captain by current skipper Brendon McCullum. You get a good delivery every now and then, and you miss out, said Hesson. But Ross is a quality player, who averages over 40 in Test cricket. Hes our best batsman. He knows the conditions well, and I expect him to have a big series. Many members of the New Zealand team will be playing their first Test at Lords, the home of cricket, this week and Hesson said the mood in the camp was upbeat.
United to resume Dreamliner flights May 20 Posted: NEW YORK (AFP) - United Airlines said Monday that it would resume Boeing 787 Dreamliner flights this month after the troubled aircraft was modified to fix battery problems that led to a months-long grounding.United, the only US airline flying the Boeing 787, said it would restart domestic Dreamliner flights beginning May 20 on routes from Houston, Texas, to other domestic hubs.United also announced the June 10 launch of its Denver-Tokyo service using the cutting-edge Boeing plane. In April, the Federal Aviation Administration approved Boeings 787 battery fix to address overheating that had led to the global grounding of all 50 787s in service since mid-January.United said Boeing had already converted two of its six Dreamliners to the new FAA standards and will soon convert the other four planes.Boeing and the FAA were diligent in their work to fix the battery issue, and now the Dreamliner is poised to fly the missions we planned and provide our customers with the features and reliability they want on their long-haul flights, said United chief operating officer Pete McDonald in a statement. In January, overheated batteries had caused a fire on a 787 parked at the Boston airport and smoke that forced a 787 into an emergency landing in Japan. The FAAs new airworthiness directive for the 787 requires the installation of modified battery packs and their respective chargers, as well as battery enclosures and ducts.Ethiopian Airlines was the first airline to restore 787 service, on April 27. Japans All Nippon Airways, the biggest Dreamliner customer with 17 in its fleet, said last week that it would resume flights beginning June 1.
