Wave of bombings kills at least 33 in Iraq Posted: BAGHDAD (AP) - A car bomb exploded near a bus station in Baghdad's main Shiite district Wednesday, the deadliest in a series of explosions that killed at least 33 people nationwide, officials said. The bloodshed came amid growing tensions between the Shiite-led government and minority Sunnis following a deadly security crackdown on a Sunni protest camp in the country's north. Violence has ebbed sharply in Iraq, but a spike in attacks has raised fears about a return of the sectarian bloodshed that pushed the country to the brink of civil war in 2006-2007.Majority Shiites control the levers of power in post-Saddam Hussein Iraq. Wishing to rebuild the nation rather than revert to open warfare, they have largely restrained their militias over the past five years or so as Sunni extremist groups such as al-Qaida have targeted them with occasional large-scale attacks. An increase attacks against Sunni mosques has fed concerns about a return to retaliatory warfare. The day began violently when an explosives-laden car parked in the center of the ethnically divided city of Kirkuk at around 3:00 p.m., killing three civilians and wounding eight. An hour later, another parked car bomb exploded in the same area, killing two children and their parents as they were traveling in a car nearby, the city's deputy police chief Maj. Gen. Torhan Abdul-Rahman Youssef said.Civilians joined forces with rescuers and policemen in searching for survivors in a partially damaged house after the first explosion. A wailing man was repeatedly trying to make his way through to the house, but he was prevented by the crowds. After the second attack, firefighters struggled to extinguish the blaze that engulfed the car with at least three charred bodies of a woman and two children visible.Kirkuk is home to a mix of Arabs, Kurds and Turkomen, who all have competing claims to the oil-rich area. The Kurds want to incorporate it into their self-rule region in Iraq's north, but Arabs and Turkomen are opposed.Hours later, several bombs struck within a 90-minute time frame as Iraqis were heading home from work or doing errands in mainly Shiite areas of Baghdad. The deadliest was in the sprawling slum of Sadr City, an area that saw some of the fiercest fighting between Americans and Shiite militias during the peak of sectarian bloodshed. Police and hospital officials said a car bomb exploded near a crowded bus stop in the area, killing at least seven people and wounding 20. The blast also damaged several shops and cars in the area, which was sealed off by police.A car bomb also struck firefighters minutes after they arrived on the scene to extinguish a burning car in the mainly Shiite Kazimiyah district in northern Baghdad, killing two and wounding nine others.Amajad Hussein owns a clothing store and witnessed the blast. We ran from the place after the explosion, but we returned to see wounded firefighters on the ground and at least one fire engine in flames, he said. Once again, the innocent people are paying the price for the security failures in this country. At least six other bombings occurred in rapid succession near other bus stops or outdoor markets across the Iraqi capital, killing 15 people and wounding nearly 50 people. In other violence, a suicide bomber on a motorcycle struck a police patrol, killing two officers and wounding eight other people in the town of Tarmiyah, 50 kilometers (30 miles) north of Baghdad, a suicide bomber rammed his motorcycle into a police patrol, killing two policemen and wounding eight other people, a police official said.Medical officials confirmed the casualty figures for all the attacks. All of the officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release information. No one immediately claimed responsibility for Wednesday's attacks, but car and suicide bombings are a hallmark of al-Qaida's Iraq branch.Insurgents routinely target Iraqi police, government officials and civilians in an attempt to undermine Iraq's government or to exacerbate political tension. For the past five months, Sunnis have been protesting against what they claim is second-class treatment by the government and to demand an end to some laws they believe unfairly target them. Violence has flared on occasion between security forces and protesters.
Prince Harry ends US visit with polo match Posted: GREENWICH (AP) - Britain's Prince Harry complimented the American people for their generosity and touted the successes of his charity for African children as he wrapped up a weeklong trip to the U.S. with a polo match in an affluent New York City suburb. The prince's team won 4-3 after he scored a game-tying goal Wednesday afternoon at the Greenwich Polo Club to benefit Sentebale, the charity he co-founded to help poor children and AIDS orphans in the small African nation of Lesotho. Greenwich ranks among the wealthiest towns in America.Thank you for a wonderful week, Prince Harry said in a speech before the match. I have witnessed the extraordinary generosity of the people of this great nation. The match drew an invitation-only crowd of about 400 including supermodel Karolina Kurkova and fashion designers Jason Wu and Valentino, who posed for pictures on a red carpet at the club on their way to lunch with the prince.Greenwich is home to many celebrities and hardly unaccustomed to fanfare. But for some, the royal visit of the 28-year-old prince was still cause for celebration. The polo club, founded by billionaire Peter Brant in 1981, has hosted other British royals including Duke and Duchess of York, Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, in 1987 and Torquhil Campbell, the Scottish Duke of Argyll, in 2012.Brant said Wednesday that Harry's father and grandfather were good players and he was excited to watch Harry play at his club. It's a great honor, he said It's great for polo.Dressed in a navy-colored suit, white shirt and no tie, the prince arrived at the club in the late morning with Brant and his wife, model Stephanie Seymour.Prince Harry thanked people for their support of the charity. The HIV pandemic continues to leave thousands of children without parents and family structures to guide them through life, the prince said. Without this support, basic needs such as food, shelter and care remain unmet, leaving children vulnerable and very often without much hope in their lives. The prince, the son of Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana, began his visit to the U.S. on May 9. He is third in line to the British throne, after his father and older brother, Prince William.Harry caused a scandal on his last trip to the U.S. when he was photographed frolicking nude with an unidentified woman in a Las Vegas hotel suite in August.
Chelsea win Europa League crown Posted: AMSTERDAM (AFP) - A 93rd-minute header from Branislav Ivanovic gave Chelsea a stunning 2-1 victory over Benfica in the Europa League final on Wednesday as the London club claimed the trophy for the first time in heart-stopping fashion. The game in Amsterdam seemed destined for extra time after Fernando Torres' superb 60th-minute opener for Chelsea was cancelled out by an Oscar Cardozo penalty, only for Ivanovic to net a dramatic winner with a looping header in stoppage time.Moments later, Chelsea's players greeted the final whistle with a jubilant mass embrace, as they became the first team to simultaneously hold the Champions League and Europa League titles. They will relinquish their Champions League crown in 10 days, but more lasting is the statistic that they are only the fourth club to have claimed Europe's three major trophies -- including the now-defunct Cup Winners' Cup -- after Ajax, Bayern Munich and Juventus.Chelsea's interim manager Rafael Benitez, meanwhile, joins Giovanni Trapattoni as one of only two coaches to have won the trophy with two different clubs, following his 2004 success with Valencia. The manner of defeat was cruel on Jorge Jesus' enterprising side and means that Benfica have now lost seven consecutive European finals since claiming their last major continental crown in 1962.Benfica's previous game was a damaging 2-1 loss to Porto that may have ended their Portuguese title hopes, but they banished any fears about their mental state with an assured start to the game that bordered on insouciance at times.Indeed, so authoritative were Benfica, and so lacklustre Chelsea, that only an apparent inability to shoot at the appropriate moment prevented Jesus' side from taking the lead before half-time.Cardozo headed an early chance over the bar, Eduardo Salvio saw a shot blocked, Rodrigo miscued twice during a frantic goal-mouth scramble, and Nicolas Gaitan twice fired over after neat approach play. With languid former Chelsea man Nemanja Matic orchestrating Benfica's attacks from a deep position, the English side were struggling to find a foothold. They did not test Benfica goalkeeper Artur until Oscar put an effort straight at him in the 27th minute, although the Brazilian was almost deceived by a swerving Frank Lampard shot that he palmed over the bar in unorthodox fashion seven minutes before half-time.Cardozo had a header ruled out for offside early in the second half, and although the call was correct, it was extremely marginal.Salvio saw a header fielded by Petr Cech in the 59th minute, but within seconds, the ball was in the Benfica net.Cech's long throw down the centre was helped on by Juan Mata and Torres showed superb strength and composure to hold off Luisao and then round Artur, delaying to send the goalkeeper down before rolling the ball home.It was a Chelsea smash-and-grab goal plucked straight from last season's Champions League textbook, but the lead was to last only eight minutes.Cesar Azpilicueta handled Salvio's header just inside the Chelsea penalty area and Cardozo drilled his spot-kick into the middle of the goal to claim his seventh goal in this season's competition.Cech had to produce a finger-tip save to prevent a half-volleyed lob by Cardozo from dipping beneath the crossbar, before Lampard almost gave the game a fairytale late finish with a 25-yard pile-driver that hit the bar.Extra time seemed certain when the fourth official raised the board showing three minutes of injury time, only for Ivanovic to send a header arcing over Artur from Mata's corner and break Benfica's hearts.
Murray retires with back pain; Nadal wins in Rome Posted: ROME (AP) - Back pain forced Andy Murray to retire midway through his second-round match at the Italian Open on Wednesday. He may have to sit out the French Open, too.Elsewhere at the Foro Italico, Rafael Nadal began his bid for a seventh Rome title by cruising past local hope Fognini of Italy 6-1, 6-3 in just 61 minutes.Similarly, two-time defending champion Maria Sharapova eased past Spanish qualifier Garbine Muguruza 6-2, 6-2.Meanwhile, rising Polish player Jerzy Janowicz upset eighth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-4, 7-6 (5) then celebrated by ripping his shirt apart, showing off his muscular physique.Murray, who was celebrating his 26th birthday, walked off the court after winning the second set against Spanish opponent Marcel Granollers.I have an issue with my lower back, Murray said. It's been an issue for a while.Murray took a long injury break early in the second set, getting his left thigh and lower back massaged.Granollers won the first set 6-3 and Murray won the second 7-6 (5).This tournament is a key clay-court warm-up for Roland Garros, the year's second Grand Slam, which starts on May 26.I would be very surprised if I was playing in Paris, Murray said. I need to make a plan as to what I do. I'll chat with the guys tonight and make a plan for the next few days then make a decision on Paris after the next five days.Murray called for the trainer while trailing 2-1 in the second set. He then lost the next two games to trail 4-1 before battling back to force a tiebreaker.I want to make sure it goes away, Murray added. It's been a problem since the end of 2011 but it got bad during last year's clay season.Nadal will next face Latvian qualifier Ernests Gulbis, who reached the semifinals in 2010.Gulbis routed Viktor Troicki of Serbia 6-1, 6-1. Early in the second set during an argument over a line call with the chair umpire, Troicki dragged a cameraman out onto the court to shoot the ball mark.Sharapova now meets 16th-seeded Sloane Stephens of the United States, who rallied past Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.Stephens reached the Australian Open semifinals in January with a win over Serena Williams. She's been climbing up against the rankings, Sharapova said. I haven't played against her in a while. I'm excited about that matchup. I'm looking forward to it.Earlier, the 24th-ranked Janowicz improved his record against top-10 opponents to 3-5, having closed last year by reaching the Paris Masters final as a qualifier, beating Murray and Janko Tipsarevic along the way. The 22-year-old Janowicz is one of only five players under the age of 24 in the top 40.After beating Tsonga with a forehand passing shot up the line on match point, Janowicz tore his shirt into pieces and tossed it to the crowd.I was really happy, especially because I didn't get off to a good start to the season and I was sick, said Janowicz, who has been bothered by ear, nose and throat infections. Now I'm healthy.Last week's Madrid Open runner-up Stanislas Wawrinka withdrew before his match against Alexander Dolgopolov with a right leg injury. Dolgopolov will next face top-ranked Novak Djokovic. In a rough day for seeded players, Jeremy Chardy of France upset No. 16 Kei Nishikori of Japan 6-4, 6-1.In the women's tournament, last year's runner-up Li Na beat fellow Chinese player Zheng Jie 6-3, 6-1; seventh-seeded Sara Errani battled past Christina McHale of the United States 7-5, 5-7, 6-2; and 12th-seeded Maria Kirilenko eliminated Varvara Lepchenko of the United States 6-3, 6-1.Also, 13th-seeded Roberta Vinci beat wild card and fellow Italian Nastassja Burnett 6-1, 6-4; 14th-seeded Dominika Cibulkova rallied past Melanie Oudin of the United States 5-7, 6-1, 6-3; and two-time champion Jelena Jankovic routed fellow Serb Bojana Jovanovski 6-2, 6-0.
Iran beat US in Grand Central exhibition Posted: NEW YORK (AP) - Iran inflicted a crushing 6-1 defeat on the United States in a wrestling exhibition event at New York's Grand Central Terminal on Wednesday.Cheered on by a large, loud contingent of fans waving Iranian flags, the wrestling power dominated on its first trip to the U.S. in a decade. It's typical Iranian. Wherever we go, they do the same thing, two-time world champion Mehdi Taghavi Kermani said through a translator after winning his match at 145 1/2 pounds. The fans' chanting and horn-blowing echoed off the high-arching ceiling and through the curtains separating Vanderbilt Hall from the commuters rushing home to the suburbs. The event dubbed The Rumble on the Rails marked the fourth straight year a New York City landmark was transformed into a wrestling meet to raise money for charity, with the last two in Times Square. But this one took on added significance beyond supporting wrestling nonprofit Beat the Streets. In February, the International Olympic Committee recommended that the sport be dropped starting with the 2020 Games. So there were the United States, Iran and Russia all together Wednesday, hoping the IOC takes to heart the symbolism of the three nations peacefully sharing a wrestling mat. Several top American wrestlers who did not face Iran, including Olympic champion Jordan Burroughs, were scheduled to compete against Russia later in the day.Iran also will face the U.S. in Los Angeles on Sunday.Wrestling is now one of eight sports seeking to fill one spot in the 2020 Olympics. The IOC board will meet May 29 in Russia to recommend a short list, with the final decision in September. This is what we're trying to do right now, said 22-year-old Kyle Dake, who could be an American star of the 2020 Olympics. This is how we're going to save Olympic wrestling. The youngster was the lone bright spot for the U.S. against Iran. At 163 pounds, he beat veteran Hassan Tahmasebi, who's almost 10 years older, in his first major senior-level international match. It was really loud in there. Feels like we were in Tehran, he joked. What's going on? Where's our USA folks?
Boxing: Mayweather highest-paid sportsman: report Posted: LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Unbeaten boxer Floyd Mayweather tops Sports Illustrated's list of highest-paid pro sportsmen for the second straight year, according to the list released by the magazine on Wednesday.Mayweather stretched his perfect record to 44-0 with a 12-round unanimous decision over Robert Guerrero on May 4, the first fight in his new megadeal with Showtime television that guarantees him at least $32 million per fight over six bouts. The fight for Mayweather's World Boxing Council welterweight world title was the champion's first since serving a jail term for domestic violence last year.In compiling its Fortunate 50 list, Sports Illustrated reckoned Mayweather would earn $90 million in 2013.Tiger Woods, who was number one on the Fortunate 50 every year from 2004-11, falls to his lowest ranking ever at number five with estimated earnings this year of $40.8 million.LeBron James, the Miami Heat superstar who was recently named NBA Most Valuable Player for the fourth time in his career, is second on the list with projected earnings of $56.5 million.James becomes the first player in a team sport to be in the top two since former NBA star Shaquille O'Neal in 2004.James's $39 million in endorsements were more than any other US sports figure in 2013, Sports Illustrated reported.New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, who didn't figure in the top 50 in 2012, shot to number three in 2013 thanks to a $37 million signing bonus from his NFL team. The magazine's list takes into account salary, winnings, bonuses and endorsements.

Oil back above $94 a barrel after early loss Posted: NEW YORK (AP) - The price of oil rose back above $94 Wednesday after dropping earlier on disappointing economic reports from Europe and the U.S.Benchmark oil for June delivery was up 9 cents to finish at $94.30 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. It fell as low as $92.13 in the morning before rising in tandem with U.S. stock markets.Recently the stock market and, to a lesser degree, the oil market have shrugged off reports of sluggish economic growth, because it suggests that the Federal Reserve will keep pumping money into financial markets.New figures released Wednesday showed the eurozone's economy continued to contract in the first quarter, keeping it in recession for a sixth consecutive quarter. And a report in the U.S. showed factories cut back sharply on production in April, suggesting economic growth may be slowing this spring. That dreary economic news initially overshadowed the latest data from the Energy Department showing that oil supplies declined unexpectedly last week.Crude supplies declined by 600,000 barrels, or 0.2 percent, to 394.9 million barrels, in the week ended May 10. Analysts expected an increase of 300,000 barrels. Still, demand for gasoline and distillates such as diesel remain below year-ago levels. The national average for a gallon of gas rose about 1 cent from Tuesday, to $3.59 a gallon. That's 6 cents more than a month ago, 14 cents lower than a year ago.Brent crude, a benchmark for many international oil varieties, rose 99 cents to $103.50 a barrel, after earlier dropping to $100.91 on the ICE Futures exchange in London.
Euro sinks on poor eurozone growth data Posted: NEW YORK (AFP) - A fresh report showing the eurozone still mired ina pause in its downward slide. The euro was flat in early Asian trade but slid immediately after EU data agency Eurostat reported the eurozone economy shrank 0.2 percent in the January-March quarter, the sixth consecutive quarterly contraction. At 2100 GMT, the euro bought $1.2884, down from 1.2924 late Tuesday. The common currency pulled off its days low of $1.2843 in afternoon US trade.Meanwhile the dollar recession sent the euro falling again Wednesday while the Japanese yen took dged slightly lower against the yen, to 102.23 yen from 102.31, while the euro slipped to 131.72 yen from 132.23.The first-quarter eurozone growth data was the key catalyst. The recession eased somewhat from the 0.6 percent contraction of the final quarter of 2012.But while core economy Germany clambered out of negative territory with 0.1 percent growth, France fell back into recession, shrinking 0.2 percent. And both Italy and Spain posted 0.5 percent first-quarter declines. Not a single aspect of any report -- neither the quarterly nor the yearly readings -- beat expectations, said Christopher Vecchio of DailyFX.The biggest disappointment, of course, has to be Germany, which saw the economy grow at 0.1 percent quarter on quarter, but contract by 0.2 percent year-on-year.IG sales trader Yusuf Heusen that the eurozone data was unsurprisingly weak, reminding us that while we are no longer expecting a Spanish or Italian bailout on a daily basis, the overall situation remains dire. The pound recovered somewhat against the dollar after a steady fall, rising to $1.5230 from $1.5211.The dollar eased against the Swiss franc, to 0.9647 franc from 0.9664 franc.
NASA's planet-hunting telescope broken Posted: LOS ANGELES (AP) - NASA's Kepler planet-hunting telescope is broken, potentially jeopardizing a U.S. mission that opened up whole new possibilities on life outside the solar system. If engineers can't find a fix, the malfunction could mean an end to the $600 million mission's planet search, although the space agency wasn't ready to call it quits Wednesday.I wouldn't call Kepler down-and-out just yet, said NASA sciences chief John Grunsfeld.NASA said the spacecraft lost the second of four wheels that control the telescope's orientation in space. Over the next few weeks, engineers will try to repair the wheel or find another solution. The telescope could be used for other purposes even if it can no longer track down planets. We can't point where we need to point. We can't gather data, deputy project manager Charles Sobeck told The Associated Press.Kepler was launched in 2009 in search of Earth-like planets. So far, it has confirmed 132 planets and spotted more than 2,700 potential ones.Last month, astronomers announced Kepler's discovery of two distant worlds that are the best candidates for habitable planets. The other planets found by Kepler haven't fit all the criteria that would make them right for life of any kind from microbes to man. While ground telescopes can hunt for planets outside our solar system, Kepler is much more advanced. For the past four years, Kepler has focused its telescope on a patch of the Milky Way hosting more than 150,000 stars, recording slight dips in brightness a sign of a planet passing in front of the star.Sobeck said there's a backlog of data that scientists still need to analyze, even if Kepler's planet-hunting days may be numbered.
First proof of patient-to-nurse infection of SARS-Like virus: WHO Posted: GENEVA (AFP) - Two Saudi health workers have contracted the deadly coronavirus from patients, marking the first evidence of transmission in a hospital setting, the World Health Organization said Wednesday. This is the first time health care workers have been diagnosed with nCoV (novel coronavirus) infection after exposure to patients, the WHO said in a statement. The two health care workers were among six new cases announced by the Saudi health ministry on Tuesday. The UN's health body said that while other health care workers had contracted the deadly disease in Jordan, there had until now not been clear evidence that they had been infected by patients carrying the virus. This is the first time we have pretty hard and fast evidence of it, WHO spokesman Gregory Haertl explained to AFP.Health care facilities that provide care for patients with suspected nCoV infection should take appropriate measures to decrease the risk of transmission of the virus to other patients and health care workers, the agency said.WHO said one of the new patients with laboratory-confirmed nCoV was a 45-year-old man who became ill on May 2, and who was currently in a critical condition. The second patient was a 43-year-old woman with a coexisting health condition, who became ill on May 8 and was in a stable condition.Health care providers are advised to be vigilant among recent travellers returning from areas affected by the virus who develop SARI, or severe acute respiratory infections, WHO said. The organisation however continued to say travel restrictions and special screening was not yet called for to limit the spread of the virus. Since last September, WHO says it has been informed of a global total of 40 laboratory confirmed cases of the virus, including 20 deaths. While the virus has been deadliest in Saudi Arabia, which now counts 30 infections, half of them fatal, cases have also been reported in Jordan, Qatar, Germany, Britain and France, where two patients are now in hospital in the northern city of Lille.
Florida man accidentally shoots himself Posted: A Florida man entered a world of pain Tuesday evening when his gun accidentally discharged during an evening of bowling at Jupiter Lanes, WPTV reports.Witnesses said that the weapon fired when the mans arm brushed up against his pocket during his backswing. You didnt think he was rolling out there naked, did you?The ball hit him in the leg, which triggered the revolver, a bystander told WBPF. Obviously, hes not a golfer. The man was rushed by ambulance (perhaps, his car was stolen) to St. Mary’s Medical Center where he no doubt received a good and thorough examination. His injuries are not considered life threatening, according to the Palm Beach Post.It remains unclear if the incident took place during league play.
Zimbabwean 'dead man' wakes up during funeral Posted: GWERU (Web Desk) - According to local reports, 34-year-old Brighton Dama Zanthe, the seemingly dead man, woke up last week while friends and family prepared to pay their respects at his home in Gweru.I was the first to notice Mr. Zanthe’s moving legs as I was in the queue to view his body. At first I could not believe my eyes but later realized that there was indeed some movements on the body as other mourners retreated in disbelief, Lot Gaka, one of the mourners and Zanthes employer, told The Herald.Fortunately, Zanthe woke up just in time; his body was set to be transported to a funeral parlor later that day. After Zanthe resurrected he was taken to a local hospital, where he remained on life support for two days before eventually being released.Bodies springing back to life is, perhaps surprisingly, not an uncommon occurrence in Zimbabwe.Earlier this year, a woman, who was believed to have collapsed and died during sex, woke up screaming after she was placed into a coffin. In another resurrection in 2012, a Zimbabwe woman, suspected of being possessed, was rushed to a hospital after she stabbed herself and was allegedly declared dead, the Chronicle reports. However, she did not stay dead for long, as she rose shortly after.
