Human rights group protests US drone killings Posted: NEW YORK (AP) - A top human rights organization is criticizing the Obama administrations increasing use of drone aircraft for the targeted killing of terrorism suspects overseas and questioned whether it is legal.Amnesty International says the U.S. drone policy is shrouded in secrecy but the killings appear to amount to extrajudicial executions that violate international rights laws. The London-based organizations assessment came in report released Wednesday on the global human rights situation.Obama is expected to address his administrations reliance on drone strikes in a speech Thursday at the National Defense University. On the eve of the speech, Attorney-General Eric Holder acknowledged for the first time that four American citizens have been killed in drone strikes abroad since 2009.Amnesty International also questioned the increasing reliance by U.S. police of Taser stun guns.
US formally takes responsibility for killing Awlaki Posted: WASHINGTON (AFP) - The United States formally said for the first time on Wednesday that it had killed radical Yemeni-American cleric Anwar al-Awlaki and three other US citizens in anti-terror strikes abroad. The acknowledgement that Washington targeted Awlaki in Yemen in September 2011 and that the three others were not directly targeted, but were also killed, came on the eve of a speech on terror policy by President Barack Obama. The September 2011 killing of Awlaki in a US drone strike stoked concern because he and Samir Khan, a Pakistani-American who also died in the strike in Yemen were US citizens who had never been charged with a crime. It prompted a constitutional debate in the United States over whether the president had the power to order the assassination of a US citizen, if he was an accused terrorist, without affording him due process.US Attorney General Eric Holder acknowledged the killing of Awlaki in a letter to congressional leaders.Since 2009, the United States, in the conduct of anti-terrorism operations against Al-Qaeda and its associated forces outside of areas of active hostilities, has specifically targeted and killed one US citizen, Anwar al-Awlaki.The United States is further aware of three other US citizens who have been killed in anti-terror operations over that same time period: Samir Khan, Abdulrahman al-Awlaki and Jude Kenan Mohammed. These individuals were not specifically targeted by the United States. At the time of his killing, US officials acknowledged that Awlaki had been killed but refused to confirm that it was carried out by a CIA drone. But Wednesdays letter was the first time that it had been disclosed that Mohammed, who was on the FBIs Most Wanted List and last reported to be in Pakistan, had been killed in a US action.Mohammed was accused of plotting to blow up bombs in tunnels or bridges in New York or Washington on the 10th anniversary of the September 11 attacks in 2001.
Iran expands nuclear activities: IAEA Posted: VIENNA (AFP) - Iran is making significant progress in expanding its nuclear programme, including in opening up a potential second route to developing the bomb, a new UN atomic agency report showed Wednesday. The International Atomic Energy Agencys latest quarterly update said that Tehran has accelerated the installation of advanced uranium enrichment equipment at its central Natanz plant. It also outlined further progress at a reactor under construction at Arak, also in central Iran, which Western countries fear could provide Iran with plutonium if the fuel is reprocessed. One Western diplomat told AFP the report will only increase the concerns about Iran.Highly enriched uranium and plutonium can both be used in a nuclear weapon. North Korea used plutonium in two tests in 2006 and 2009, while uranium was used in the Little Boy atomic bomb dropped by the US on Hiroshima, Japan in 1945.The new IAEA report, seen by AFP, said Iran has installed at Natanz almost 700 IR-2m centrifuges and/or empty centrifuge casings, compared with just 180 in February. None was operating, however.Iran has said it intends to install around 3,000 of the new centrifuges at Natanz -- where around 13,500 of the older models are in place -- enabling it to speed up the enrichment of uranium. The UN Security Council has passed numerous resolutions calling on Iran to suspend all enrichment and heavy water activities -- of the kind under development at Arak -- and has imposed four rounds of sanctions.Last year additional unilateral US and EU sanctions targeting Irans oil exports and its financial system began to cause real problems for the Persian Gulf countrys economy.
Bahrain claims Iranian drone found Posted: MANAMA (AP) - Bahrains Interior Ministry says an Iranian drone has been found in the strategic Gulf kingdom that hosts the U.S. Navys 5th Fleet. The statement Wednesday gave no other details. Bahrain has repeatedly accused Shiite Iran of encouraging the more than 2-year-long uprising in Bahrain by its majority Shiites. Iran denies it has any direct role.Iran has recently claimed advances in its technology in unmanned aircraft, including possibly re-engineering technology from a CIA spy drone captured in eastern Iran in late 2011.There was no immediate comment from Iran or the U.S. Navy on Bahrains claims.
Man shot to death while questioned in Boston probe Posted: ORLANDO (AP) - A Chechen immigrant was shot to death by authorities early Wednesday after he turned violent while being questioned about his ties to one of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects, officials said.Ibragim Todashev, a 27-year-old mixed martial arts fighter, was gunned down at his Orlando townhouse during a meeting with an FBI agent and two Massachusetts state troopers, authorities said. The agent was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.Three law enforcement officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Todashev had lunged at the FBI agent with a knife. However, two of those officials said later in the day it was no longer clear what happened. The third official had not received any new information. The FBI gave no details on why it was interested in Todashev except to say that he was being questioned as part of the Boston investigation. But some of his former roommates who were questioned as well said that Todashev knew one of the bombing suspects, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, from mixed martial arts fighting in Boston and that the FBI was asking about him.Public records show Todashev lived in Watertown, Massachusetts, just outside Boston, last year.Tamerlan Tsarnaev, an aspiring boxer, was killed in a shootout with police days after the April 15 bombings. His younger brother, Dzhokhar, survived and is charged with carrying out the attack that killed three people and wounded more than 260.Investigators have been trying to establish the scope of the plot. In addition, authorities in Massachusetts said they would investigate whether Tamerlan Tsarnaev had any connection to an unsolved 2011 slaying in the Boston suburb of Waltham, where three men were found dead in an apartment, their throats slit and marijuana sprinkled over their bodies. One of the victims was a boxer and a friend of Tsarnaevs.Todashev had lived on and off with other Chechens in the Orlando suburb of Kissimmee and had moved to Orlando more recently, friends said.Hes a regular guy, nothing wrong, Saeed Dunkaev said.Police records, however, suggest he had a hot temper, with arrests in a road-rage incident and, more recently, in a fight over a parking space.Muslin Chapkhanov, another former roommate, said Todashev knew the older Tsarnaev brother. Todashev was living in Boston and I think he trained with him, Chapkhanov said.Former roommate Khusen Taramov said the FBI was asking questions about a conversation Todashev had with the elder bombing suspect a month before the Boston attack.
Tennis: Zheng stuns Wozniacki in Brussels Open Posted: BRUSSELS (AFP) - Chinas Zheng Jie knocked top seed Caroline Wozniacki out of the Brussels Open on Wednesday, just hours after prevailing in a three-set opener held over because of Tuesdays heavy rain.Zheng, the world number 51, eased past the Dane 6-2, 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals.After Tuesdays washout, 10 first round matches were yet to finish, with all eight second round matches also on the schedule. But Zheng thrived in the tough conditions, defeating American qualifier Mallory Burdette, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 in her first round.Four hours later, she was back on court to beat former world number one Wozniacki.Shes a very tough player and fought until the last point, said Zheng, who hit 34 winners to the Danes 17.Third seed Dominika Cibulkova was also knocked out, falling to Kaia Kanepi, 6-4, 7-6 (8/6) in the first round. The Estonian later beat Jana Cepelova in her second round match, 6-3, 6-3.German sixth seed Julia Goerges was also a loser, having to retire with a wrist injury after dropping the first set of her second round match against Romina Oprandi.Chinas eighth seed Peng Shuai battled over three hours to edge Olga Govortsova, 4-6, 7-6 (7/4), 7-6 (7/4).Earlier in the day, Peng beat Sofia Arvidsson 6-3, 6-0 in the opening round.Hopes of a third Chinese player in the quarter-finals were ended when American fourth seed Sloane Stephens beat Zhang Shuai, 6-4, 6-0.

Animals opt for Dortmund to win Champions League Posted: BERLIN (AP) - Not literally, but the animals have spoken: Borussia Dortmund will beat Bayern Munich in the first all-German Champions League final.Walter the orangutan at Dortmund zoo, a tapir in Leipzig zoo and a pair of otters in Aue favor Dortmund to beat Bayern at Wembley Stadium on Saturday. Only Nelly the elephant in Hodenhagen demurred.Walter initially appeared to favor Bayern but discarded the red jersey in favor of Dortmunds shirt he found in the second bag.Dpa news agency says Baru the tapir found a German turnip decorated in Dortmunds colors to be more appetizing than the Bayern option, while the otters ran to a Dortmund corner of their enclosure to eat.Nelly was the only animal to agree with Bayerns status as bookmakers favorite, scoring in Dortmunds goal.
Squash: Nicol into British Open quarters Posted: HULL (AFP) - World number one Nicol David survived a huge temperature drop to carry her bid for a fifth British Open title into the quarter-finals with a straight games win over a surprise survivor Wednesday. The games greatest legend did that with an 11-4, 14-12, 11-2 success against the unseeded Sarah Kippax in single figure outdoor temperatures which were almost 20 degrees celsius colder than first round matches played indoors.David saved a game point in the second game as Kippax, who on Tuesday upset the former finalist Natalie Grinham, started to hit a better line and length, and then grew a little in confidence, advancing to 11-10.But David responded by simplifying her game, using her consistency and mobility, before once more attempting some more ambitious attacking ploys as she stretched her lead in the third game.It was like day and night, she said, when asked how different the conditions for the first and second rounds had been.It was so bouncy on the other court (at the Pontefract squash club) and here this was so much colder and you have to work so much harder on the ball. Both of us were putting so much into hitting every shot.David was asked how she had almost allowed Kippax to level at one game all, after which the match may have taken a different character. With home crowd advantage she was feeding off the crowd and going with the momentum, the champion replied. I was just trying to make sure I took that game.David will now have a days rest before taking on Joelle King, the sixth-seeded New Zealander, who progressed with an 11-5, 11-7, 11-5 win over Annie Au, the 13th seed from Hong Kong.Kasey Brown, the 12th-seeded Australian, made a tenacious recovery from two games down to beat Sarah-Jane Perry, the English surprise packet who had already despatched the seventh seeded Low Wee Wern.I lost last year when I was two games up, so I thought I really ought to turn this one around, said Brown after a 8-11, 9-11, 12-10, 11-7, 12-10 win in which she was twice within two points of defeat. After the third game I thought I would win.Brown will now face Alison Waters, the fourth-seeded English player, who lost a two-game lead but still scrambled home 11-2, 11-4, 8-11, 7-11, 11-4 against 36-year-old Rachael Grinham.Nick Matthew, the only Englishman to have won the British Open three times, reached the quarter-finals with a 11-7, 11-3, 11-4 win over Laurens Jan Anjema, the world number 17 from The Netherlands.Matthew, 32, is seeded to contest Sundays final with Ramy Ashour, the man who last year took away his world title and world number one ranking, and popular opinion suggests that the Egyptian will perform another steal.Ashour makes his bid to reach the quarter-finals on Thursday when he plays Englands Chris Simpson.Tarek Momen underlined Egypts impressive dominance of the sport by causing the tournaments biggest upset so far -- a four-game win over Peter Barker, twice a former semi-finalist.The 25-year-old from Cairo is only his countrys sixth best player, yet took advantage of the cold conditions superbly to score a 9-11, 11-4, 11-6, 11-9 win over one of the tours most consistent top ten players.
Formula One: Hamilton confident of grabbing Monaco pole Posted: MONACO (AFP) - Lewis Hamilton is confident that if can grab pole position for Mercedes on Saturday he can fend off all his supposedly faster rivals to win Sundays keenly-anticipated 71st Monaco Grand Prix. The 28-year-old Briton, who has a special like for street circuits and one previous glorious victory on the Mediterranean street circuit to his name, in his championship winning season of 2008, said Wednesday that he will do all he can to snatch pole and realise his dream. If you can get on the front row here you have a much better chance of staying in front than perhaps we have done in the last races, said Hamilton. It is going to be tough still because people last year pushed to a one-stop strategy, and people might want to do the same thing this time which means doing 40 laps which will be very tough on our car.He added that, contrary to the teams approach at previous races where team-mate Nico Rosberg started on pole, this time he wanted to concentrate on qualifying and stick with that kind of set-up.Mercedes are currently on a hot streak as the best qualifiers having reeled off a hat-trick of poles in China, thanks to Hamilton, and then both Bahrain and Spain, with Rosberg. In the last race we tried to sort the car more for the race and it didnt help at all, he said. For me it goes to show that there isnt a race set-up versus a single lap set-up, so I am going to work hard this weekend to get that qualifying lap set-up because position is everything here.If we can get on the front row that will put us in good stead for the race. In 2007 I was second and I could not get past Fernando (Alonso), last year no one could get past (Mark) Webber - it was just a train. You can create a train here.
England eye sweep of short test series with NZ Posted: LEEDS (AP) - How long New Zealand can hold its nerve against Englands bowlers will determine the fate of the second and final test starting at Headingley on Friday. For 18 straight days spread over four tests this year, New Zealand punched well above its weight and rattled the English. But on the 19th day, last Sunday, England revealed its capabilities on a home pitch at Lords offering swing, seam and turn. The Kiwis were routed for 68 for England to win the opening test of this brief series by 170 runs and more than a day.England, despite still being far from polished, will resume at Leeds inspired in believing that if it can put up a decent amount of runs, it has the bowlers and knowhow to achieve only its second series sweep of the Kiwis in 35 years.

Its ambition now is to qualify for the 2015 World Cup. |
