Dar winds up budget debate: Legal cover for steps voided by SC soughtBy Mubarak Zeb KhanISLAMABAD, June 22: Finance Minister Ishaq Dar proposed amendments to the Finance Bill on Saturday in an attempt to placate an agitated salaried class as well as to lend legitimacy to some of the government’s hasty steps for implementation of budget proposals. The implementation of changes in the indirect sales tax and federal excise and customs duties were set aside by the Supreme Court through a judgment the previous day. The court had barred the government from collecting taxes without the parliament’s approval and declared illegal the 1931 law, cited by the government as justification. | ||||||
Hamid’s portfolio changedBy Amir WasimISLAMABAD, June 22: Two days before the Supreme Court is to take up petitions seeking prosecution of former military ruler retired General Pervez Musharraf on treason charges, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif withdrew the law ministry’s portfolio from Zahid Hamid in an apparent move to save his government from any possible embarrassment. According to a Cabinet Division notification issued on Saturday, Mr Hamid has now been allocated the portfolio of science and technology as federal minister. | ||||||
Taliban soften stand after US warningDOHA, June 22: The Taliban signalled a willingness to meet demands to keep their flag lowered as the US warned on Saturday that their newly opened political office in Qatar might have to be closed as talks aimed at ending nearly 12 years of war in Afghanistan remained in limbo. A Taliban spokesman in Doha, Shaheen Suhail, suggested the Taliban were willing to move forward despite “much anger” among some members over the removal of the name and the lowering of the Taliban flag — a white flag emblazoned with a Quranic verse in black. | ||||||
Some concessions, but GST hike remainsBy Raja AsgharISLAMABAD, June 22: Finance Minister Ishaq Dar agreed to give several concessions in the new budget on Saturday, but stuck to a higher rate for the general sales tax (GST) as he and Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan sought to lift government spirits in the National Assembly after a week of opposition attacks and a judicial rebuke. Mr Dar announced the concessions in the light of opposition criticism or non-binding Senate recommendations in a speech winding up the National Assembly’s general debate on the budget for 2013-14. | ||||||
Five killed in Darra air strikeBy Our CorrespondentKOHAT, June 22: Five militants were killed in shelling by fighter planes in Akkakhel area of Darra Adamkhel on Saturday, official sources said.
