World powers to provide 'urgent aid' to Syria rebels

Posted:

DOHA (AFP) - World powers supporting Syria's rebels decided on Saturday to provide them with urgent military aid so they can counter brutal attacks by the regime and protect the Syrian people.Yet even as they prepared to step up their own contribution to a war that has killed nearly 100,000 people, they demanded that Iran and Lebanese movement Hezbollah stop supporting President Bashar al-Assad's regime.Top Qatari diplomat and host Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem al-Thani said a meeting in Doha of foreign ministers of the Friends of Syria had taken secret decisions about practical measures to change the situation on the ground.A final communique said each country in its own way would provide urgently all the necessary materiel and equipment so that the rebels could counter brutal attacks by the regime and its allies and protect the Syrian people.Sheikh Hamad said two of the 11 countries participating had expressed reservations, with diplomats saying they were Germany and Italy. Also attending were the foreign ministers of Britain, Egypt, France, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and the United States.Washington and Doha had called for increasing aid to end what US Secretary of State John Kerry called an imbalance in Assad's favour.Kerry said the United States remained committed to a peace plan that includes a conference in Geneva and a transitional government picked both by Assad and the opposition. But he said the rebels need more support for the purpose of being able to get to Geneva and to be able to address the imbalance on the ground.Sheikh Hamad echoed Kerry's remarks, saying a peaceful end cannot be reached unless a balance on the ground is achieved, in order to force the regime to sit down to talks. On Thursday, the rebel Free Syrian Army said it needed anti-aircraft and anti-tank weapons.A Western diplomat in Doha said on Saturday that FSA chief of staff General Selim Idriss had presented a wish list and that it had been agreed to for the most part.Everybody is going to help and help better, the diplomat said, adding that there would be on important qualitative and quantitative leap.Later on Saturday, French President Francois Hollande arrived in Qatar for talks with the emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani.He was expected to highlight the need for trust, clarity and coordination in backing the rebels, as Qatar is accused of supporting Syrian opposition groups it does not know, a French diplomat said.Meanwhile, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said the ministers demanded that predominantly Shiite Iran and Hezbollah stop meddling in the war by supporting Assad, whose Alawite sect is an offshoot of Shiite Islam. We have demanded that Iran and Hezbollah end their intervention in the conflict, said Fabius. We are fully against the internationalisation of the conflict, he told reporters.Kerry also accused Assad of an internationalisation of the conflict by bringing in Iran and Hezbollah. And the final communique said that the entry into Syria of militia and fighters that support the regime, a clear reference to Hezbollah, must be prevented. In that respect, they emphasised that neighbouring Iraq and Lebanon need to actively safeguard their borders in order to ensure that fighters and equipment do not escalate current tensions. The ministers also warned of the increasing presence and growing radicalism and terrorist elements in Syria.Western powers have hesitated to arm the rebels for fear weapons would fall into the hands of radical elements among them, such as the powerful Al-Nusra Front, which wants to establish an Islamic state in Syria.Sheikh Hamad also voiced support for a peace conference but insisted there could be no role in the future government for Assad and aides with bloodstained hands. He accused Assad's regime of wanting to block the Geneva conference in order to stay in power, even if that costs one million dead, millions of displaced and refugees and the destruction of Syria and its partition. And the final communique stated that Assad has no role in the transitional governing body or thereafter. On the ground, loyalist forces pressed a fierce four-day assault on rebel-held parts of Damascus, while insurgents launched a new attack on regime-controlled neighbourhoods of second city Aleppo.Saturday's developments come as the military pushed on with its bid to end the insurgency in and around Homs in central Syria, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. They also come a day after at least 100 people were killed nationwide, it added.

24 dead in Iraq violence

Posted:

BAGHDAD (AFP) - A suicide bomber blew himself up in a Shiite mosque north of Baghdad on Saturday, the deadliest in a series of attacks that left 24 people dead nationwide days ahead of Shiite commemorations. The unrest is the latest in a surge in nationwide violence which comes as the country grapples with months of protests by its Sunni Arab minority, tensions in a swathe of territory that Kurdish leaders want to incorporate into their autonomous region in the north and protracted political deadlock in Baghdad.Saturday's deadliest attack struck Taji, a predominantly Sunni town that lies just north of Baghdad.A suicide bomber blew himself up inside the Al-Rahman mosque in the town at about 8:00 pm (1700 GMT), according to an interior ministry official and a medical source. At least 15 people were killed and 31 others wounded in the explosion, the officials said. The mosque is frequented by Shiite Muslims and lies in a Shiite area of Taji.No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, but Sunni militants linked to Al-Qaeda often carry out suicide attacks and frequently target Iraq's Shiite Muslim majority population, whom they regard as apostates, especially during times of commemorations. The bombing comes just days before Shabaniyah ceremonies, which mark the birth of Imam Mehdi, Shiite Islam's so-called 12th imam. The commemorations are due to take place in the holy Shiite shrine city of Karbala on Monday.Elsewhere in Iraq on Saturday, a suicide car bomb and two separate shootings killed nine.In the main northern city of Mosul, a suicide attacker set off a vehicle rigged with explosives near a police patrol on the city's southern outskirts. The explosion killed four people including a policeman, police and medical officials said. And in the ethnically mixed town of Tuz Khurmatu, which lies at the heart of the area disputed between the Kurds and Baghdad, gunmen opened fire on patrolling police, killing three and wounding a fourth, security and medical officials said. The tract of land, which the Kurds want to incorporate over the objections of Baghdad, stretches from Iraq's eastern border with Iran to its western frontier with Syria.Diplomats and officials say the unresolved row is one of the biggest threats to Iraq's long-term stability. And in the mostly Sunni Arab city of Tikrit, militants fired on day labourers waiting near a grain silo, killing two and wounding four, officials said.Iraq has suffered an upsurge in violence since the beginning of the year, coinciding with rising discontent among Sunnis that erupted into protests in late December.Analysts say a failure by the Shiite-led authorities to address the underlying causes of the demonstrations has given militant groups both a recruitment platform and room to manoeuvre.

Police disperse protesters in Istanbul square

Posted:

ISTANBUL (AP) - Turkish police used water cannon to disperse thousands gathered in Istanbul's Taksim Square on Saturday to observe a memorial for four people killed during recent anti-government protests. The officers later fired tear gas and rubber bullets to scatter demonstrators who regrouped in side streets. The police move came as Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared that foreign-led conspirators he alleges are behind the anti-government movement in his country also are fomenting the recent unrest in Brazil. The protests in Turkey erupted three weeks ago after riot police brutally cracked down on peaceful environmental activists who opposed plans to develop Gezi Park, which lies next to Taksim. The demonstrations soon turned into expressions of discontent with what critics say is Erdogan's increasingly authoritarian and meddlesome ways.Erdogan, who took power a decade ago, denies he is authoritarian and, as evidence of his popularity, points to elections in 2011 that returned his party to power with 50 percent of the vote and gave him a third term in office. On Saturday, demonstrators converged in Taksim, where they laid down carnations in remembrance of at least three protesters and a police officer killed in the rallies. For about two hours, protesters shouted anti-government slogans and demanded that Erdogan resign before police warned them to leave the square. Some demonstrators tried to give carnations to the security forces watching over the square, shouting: Police, don't betray your people. But after their warnings to disperse were ignored, police pushed back protesters with water cannon, even chasing stragglers down side streets and apparently blocking entrances to the square. An Associated Press journalist said police drove back protesters into side streets off Taksim including the main pedestrian shopping street Istiklal and later fired several rounds of tear gas and rubber bullets to scatter the crowds who refused to disperse. There were no immediate reports of any injuries.Police in the capital, Ankara, also sprayed tear gas and pressurized water to break up hundreds of protesters who gathered in two neighborhoods, wanting to march to the city's main square, the Dogan news agency reported.Last week, police had used water cannon as well as tear gas and rubber bullets to clear Taksim and end an occupation of Gezi Park by activists. But the demonstrations had largely subsided in Istanbul in recent days, with many protesters using a new, more passive approach of airing their grievances: standing motionless.Erdogan has faced fierce international criticism for his government's crackdown on the protests, but he has defended his administration's actions as well as the tough police tactics. He also has blamed the protests on unspecified foreign forces, bankers and foreign and Turkish media outlets he says want to harm Turkish interests.Brazil, meanwhile, has been hit by mass rallies set off this month by a 10-cent hike in bus and subway fares in Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and elsewhere. The protests soon moved beyond that issue to tap into widespread frustration in the South American nation over a range of issues, including high taxes and woeful public services.During an address to tens of thousands of his backers in the Black Sea coastal city of Samsun, the latest stop in a series of rallies he has called to shore up his political support, Erdogan declared that Brazil was the target of the same conspirators he claims are trying to destabilize Turkey. The same game is now being played over Brazil, Erdogan said. The symbols are the same, the posters are the same, Twitter, Facebook are the same, the international media is the same. They (the protests) are being led from the same center. They are doing their best to achieve in Brazil what they could not achieve in Turkey. It's the same game, the same trap, the same aim.

Obama to unveil climate plan in Tuesday speech

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama says he'll unveil a national plan to combat climate change in a speech Tuesday.Obama says in an online video that he'll lay out his vision for reducing carbon pollution, preparing the U.S. for the effects of climate change and leading other nations in the global effort.Obama says no single step can reverse climate change. He says scientists must design new fuels and energy sources, and workers must prepare for a clean energy economy.Obama isn't saying what specifics he'll lay out. But White House aides have suggested the steps will include renewable energy and energy-efficient appliances and buildings. The plan is also expected to involve the Environmental Protection Agency using its authority under the Clean Air Act to regulate heat-trapping pollution from coal-fired power plants.

Wing walker, pilot die in crash at Ohio air show

Posted:

CINCINNATI (AP) - A plane carrying a wing walker crashed Saturday at an air show and exploded into flames, killing the pilot and stunt walker instantly, authorities said. The crash of the 450 HP Stearman biplane happened at around 12:45 p.m. at the Vectren Air Show at Dayton International Airport. No spectators were hurt.A video posted on WHIO-TV shows the plane turn upside-down as the performer sits on top of the wing. The plane then tilts and crashes to the ground, exploding into flames as spectators screamed.Ian Hoyt, 20, an aviation photographer and licensed pilot from Findlay, was at the show with his girlfriend. He told The Associated Press he was taking photos as the plane passed by and had just raised his camera to take another shot. Then I realized they were too low and too slow. And before I knew it, they hit the ground, he said.He couldn't tell exactly what happened, but it appeared that the plane stalled and didn't have enough air speed, he said.I'm still shaking, Hoyt said. He said he had been excited to see the show because he'd never seen the scheduled performer wing walker Jane Wicker in action.Federal records show that the biplane was registered to Wicker, who lived in Loudon, Virginia. A man who answered the phone at a number listed for Wicker on her website said he had no comment and hung up.Airport spokeswoman Linda Hughes and Ohio State Highway Patrol Lt. Anne Ralston confirmed the deaths of a pilot and stunt walker to the AP. The air show said it wasn't immediately releasing the identities of the dead. The show was canceled for the rest of the day, but organizers said events would resume Sunday. The National Transportation Safety Board said it is investigating the crash.

Nadal still plagued by knee worry at Wimbledon

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Rafael Nadal admitted Saturday that he blundered by playing Wimbledon last year, a decision which saw him crash out in the second round and left him on the sidelines for seven months. The Spaniard was knocked out by Lukas Rosol, the Czech Republic player who was ranked 100 at the time, 12 months ago.He went on to miss the Olympics and US and Australian Opens, but he has won seven titles in nine finals since his return to the tour in February. That run was topped by his historic eighth French Open trophy earlier this month. But the legacy of his shock exit at the All England Club last year still burns deep.Last year I played here because it is a tournament that I love, but I was not ready to play, said Nadal. After Roland Garros I felt that my knee was not there anymore. After here I was not able to complete in one more tournament during the rest of the season.Rosol played a fantastic fifth set. He probably would beat me if I was healthy. That experience for me last year was too much.Nadal, 27, and now the holder of 12 Grand Slam titles, is only seeded five this year at Wimbledon which starts on Monday. He has been placed in the same half of the draw as seven-time champion Roger Federer, the third seed, and Andy Murray, the second seed. The rankings say that these kind of things can happen, said Nadal. So I know you are talking about Andy and Roger probably, but I don't see them before quarter-finals and semi-finals.So I have a long way to work before that. I didn't play a lot on grass last couple of years, so I really take care about myself and the first round. Nadal, who has a 43-2 winning record since his return, also admitted that he has yet to decide on his playing schedule for the rest of the year.He even described 2013 as a transitional year.I will compete here as good as possible. I'm gonna try my best, then we will see what's next for me, he added.I haven't completely decided my schedule after here, because I have to analyse a little bit more what's more or less favourable for my future.Nadal will start his campaign for a third Wimbledon title on Monday when he faces experienced Belgian, Steve Darcis.

Lopez, Vesnina win Eastbourne finals

Posted:

EASTBOURNE (AP) - Feliciano Lopez of Spain won his third career title when he beat second-seeded Gilles Simon 7-6 (2), 6-7 (5), 6-0 in the Eastbourne final on Saturday, days before they meet again in the first round at Wimbledon.Meanwhile, Elena Vesnina of Russia won her second WTA title when she defeated American qualifier Jamie Hampton 6-2, 6-1 in their final.Lopez won just four of 21 break points and Simon one of six. After an exchange of breaks midway through the first set, the Spaniard failed to win a set point at 5-4 before taking the tiebreaker. In the second set it was Simon who held a set point at 5-4 ahead of winning the tiebreaker, before Lopez responded by dominating the final set.Its definitely a good feeling to win the week before Wimbledon, Lopez said. Conditions were so tough but we did our best. Hopefully at Wimbledon we can play a better match.Vesnina, who lost the first six finals of her career, has now won her last two after also winning in Hobart in January. Hampton was playing in her first career final after upsetting No. 4-ranked Agnieszka Radwanska and No. 9-ranked Caroline Wozniacki. The windy conditions made it difficult for players to produce their best tennis, and Vesnina received a time violation warning early in the second set as she waited to serve. It was really difficult to play today, honestly. I think we both were struggling with this wind, Vesnina said. I was just trying to play aggressive and deep so Jamie didnt have the time to attack. So that was my game plan.Hampton was the first qualifier to reach a WTA final this year, and was attempting to become the first qualifier to win a title since Russias Ekaterina Makarova at Eastbourne in 2010.She will be ranked on Monday as the third American behind Serena Williams and Sloane Stephens. Hampton and Stephens will clash in the first round at Wimbledon.

Brazil beat Italy 4-2 in Confederations Cup

Posted:

SALVADOR (AP) - Neymar scored his third goal in three matches and Fred added two others as Brazil showed commanding form to defeat Italy 4-2 and finish top of Group A of the Confederations Cup on Saturday.Substitute defender Dante opened the scoring from close range in first-half injury time, but Italy equalized through Emanuele Giaccherini in a swift breakaway in the 51st. Dante looked just offside for his goal.Neymar scored in the 55th with a well-placed free kick shot into the top corner of the net as Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon could only watch, and Fred added to the lead from inside the area in the 66th before Italy pulled closer again with a Giorgio Chiellini goal in the 71st.Brazil was furious with Uzbek referee Ravshan Irmatov, who appeared to blow for an Italy penalty but changed his mind and gave a goal when it went in the net a second or so later.Italy almost equalized when an 80th-minute header by Christian Maggio exploded off the crossbar, and Mario Balotelli just missed with a right-footed shot a few minutes later, but Fred sealed the victory from a Buffon parry in the 89th, another goal that looked offside.Italy coach Cesare Prandelli was pleased with some of his team's performance. In the second half we played great. I'm very pleased with what I saw, the way we reacted and had desire to attack deep. Of course, against squads like these you always risk something and if you make a mistake you let in a goal.Matches like these make you grow and if we face Spain we'll try to play our game, he said.Brazil ended with nine points, three more than the Italians. Mexico and Japan had already been eliminated. Brazil needed at least a draw to win the group and likely avoid a matchup with World Cup champion Spain, which leads Group B.The result keeps Italy winless against Brazil in 30 years, since the second round of the 1982 World Cup in Spain. In six matches since, Brazil has won four and there were two draws.Brazil had also beaten Italy 3-0 the group stage of the 2009 Confederations Cup, when it eventually won its second-straight title and third overall in the warm-up competition. Brazil hasn't won any significant title since then. The teams had met only four times since the 1994 World Cup final in the United States, with two victories by Brazil and two draws, including a 2-2 result earlier this year. It was the first time the teams played in Brazil.Brazil took control in the first few minutes but it didn't take long before Italy leveled the match at the Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador.Dante, who replaced injured starting defender David Luiz in the 34th, put Brazil ahead with a left-footed shot off a rebound from a difficult save by Buffon following a header by striker Fred. Buffon dived to his left to make the stop, but Dante was in position to sidefoot the ball into the net. Dante appeared to be narrowly offside after Fred's header from the free kick taken by Neymar.Italy equalized with Giaccherini's powerful shot into the far corner after receiving an acrobatic pass by Balotelli as he was hit by Dante outside the area. Giaccherini had come on in the 26th to replace injured midfielder Riccardo Montolivo.Neymar found the net from the free kick after he was fouled just outside the box following a nice run past Italian defenders. Buffon began going to his right and couldn't get back after Neymar fired the shot away from the wall instead of going over it.Neymar was replaced in the 69th to a standing ovation by the nearly 50,000 fans packing the Arena Fonte Nova.Fred took advantage of a long pass by Marcelo and scored his first goal with a firm left-footed shot into the top of the net after battling with Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini inside the area.Chiellini pulled Italy closer with a shot from near the penalty spot after a corner kick taken by Antonio Candreva, and after the missed chances by Maggio and Balotelli, Fred found the net again off the rebound of Buffon's save after a shot by Marcelo in a breakaway.Italy also lost Ignazio Abate because of an injury just 30 minutes into the match. The teams started without some of their most important players. Italy couldn't count on midfielder Andrea Pirlo because of a strained right leg muscle, while Brazil was without defensive midfielder Paulinho because of a left ankle sprain. The Italians also missed Daniele De Rossi, who was suspended with two yellow cards.

Hernandez double gives Mexico victory over Japan

Posted:

BELO HORIZONTE (AFP) - Manchester United star Javier Hernandez scored twice but missed a last-minute penalty as Mexico defeated Japan 2-1 on Saturday to leave the Asian side winless at the Confederations Cup.Hernandez took his tally for the tournament to three as Mexico registered their first victory. The win, however, came in a 'dead' game after Brazil and Italy had already made sure of their places in the semi-finals as Group A qualifiers.Hernandez, who had scored his team's only goal of the competition in the 2-1 loss to Italy, opened the scoring in the 54th minute. He timed a run perfectly to meet a cross from Andres Guardado before heading the ball past Eiji Kawashima in the Japan goal.Twelve minutes later, Hernandez made it 2-0.Giovani Dos Santos sent over a corner which was flicked on at the near post by Hiram Mier for the Manchester United man to head home from close range.Japan refused to give up with Yasuyuki Konno seeing a goalbound effort cleared away by the feet of keeper Guillermo Ochoa. The World Cup qualifiers pulled one back four minutes from time when Stuttgart striker Shinji Okazaki tapped in a simple chance.Hernandez had a chance to make it 3-1 in stoppage time when he was brought down in the area. However, Kawashima pulled off a fine save from the resulting penalty with the striker then smashing the rebound off the crossbar. The result allowed Mexico, who had also lost 2-0 to Brazil, to finish third in Group A.Japan ended the tournament with three defeats, having already been beaten 3-0 by Brazil and 4-3 by Italy. There were few chances in the first half at Belo Horizonte with Mexico enjoying more of the ball. They were unlucky not to have taken the lead in the 40th minute when Valencia midfielder Guardado sent a flying header off the post.Japan had thought they had gone ahead on nine minutes when Okazaki deflected a cross from captain Yasuhito Endo into the net.But referee Felix Brych of Germany ruled it out for offside.

Doctors make progress toward 'artificial pancreas'

Posted:

CHICAGO (AP) - Doctors are reporting a major step toward an artificial pancreas, a device to constantly monitor blood sugar in people with diabetes and automatically supply insulin as needed. It's for people with Type 1 diabetes whose bodies do not make insulin, a hormone needed to turn food into energy. Many use insulin pumps but a big problem is having too much insulin in their systems when blood-sugar falls low overnight.A study of about 250 people showed that a pump could be programmed to turn off when sugar dips too low. Doctors say the next step is testing to see if it can constantly adjust insulin levels automatically. The work was discussed Saturday at a diabetes conference in Chicago and published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Cook confident England can upset India in final

Posted:

LONDON (AP) - Captain Alastair Cook is hoping to end England's 38-year title drought in 50-over world competitions by upsetting unbeaten India in the Champions Trophy final at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Sunday. The opening batsman is trying to deliver the country's first 50-over trophy after four previous failures in finals. Since 1975, England has endured 16 failed campaigns in World Cup and Champions Trophy events.I can see no reason why we can't do it tomorrow, Cook said Saturday. The Ashes are looming into view but Cook views a long overdue victory at a world tournament as a pressing priority, saying I can see no reason why we can't do it tomorrow.England will hope that they can continue their run of dominant wins, especially after its surprisingly comfortable seven-wicket victory over South Africa in the semifinals. The Indians, however, are regarded as the clear favorites due to their impressive run in the Champions Trophy. They will be hoping for a continuation of the prolific form by Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma near the top of the order.Dhawan, in particular, has been among the tournament's best players, scoring 332 runs so far, 110 more than next best. First-wicket partner Rohit Sharma has been on top form himself, the pair together combining for an aggregate of 200 runs more than English counterparts Alastair Cook and Ian Bell. The two Indian openers have put together exactly 500 runs between them in the four successive victories that have taken India to the final. However, India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is wary of the new-ball threat of James Anderson, especially in his home conditions. His side has struggled consistently against England's premier fast bowler in the past, notably in the test whitewash in England two years ago.Since then, India have had a string of victories against England, most recently at the start of the year. Our top order have done well and played some of the best bowlers in world cricket so far in the tournament, Dhoni said. So I think they are quite well-prepared for the English bowlers.
