Terrorists attack Nanga Parbat camp, slay 10 foreign climbers

GILGIT, June 23: Ten foreign climbers and a Pakistani guide and cook were killed as gunmen wearing the uniform of paramilitary Gilgit-Baltistan Scouts stormed into the base camp of Nanga Parbat, one of the world’s highest mountains, in the scenic Himalayan valley of Bunar Das in Gilgit-Baltistan late on Saturday night.

NA resolution strongly condemns killings

ISLAMABAD, June 23: The National Assembly unanimously adopted on Sunday a resolution strongly condemning the killing of nine (later revised to 10) foreign mountaineers and two Pakistanis in Gilgit-Baltistan after a visibly overworked Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan shared details of the ghastly incident with lawmakers.

The minister said three Chinese, four Ukrainians, one Russian and one Nepalese had been killed. A Pakistani woman mountaineer and a local guide were also killed.

Mountaineers’ bodies taken to Islamabad

ISLAMABAD, June 23: Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan received at the Air Marshal Nur Khan Air Base in Rawalpindi on Sunday the bodies of 10 members of a trekking expedition killed in a terrorist attack in Gilgit-Baltistan.

The ambassadors of China and Ukraine and officials of the Nepalese and Russian embassies were also at the base to receive the bodies.

PSO under extensive scrutiny

ISLAMABAD, June 23: The financial and administrative affairs of the Pakistan State Oil (PSO), the country’s largest company in terms of revenue and biggest fuel supplier, have come under special scrutiny of the new government.

A senior official told Dawn that a special audit and inquiry into internal controls of the PSO had been ordered after complaints about alleged irregularities into fuel supply deals with foreign suppliers, oil imports and politically motivated recruitments and promotions made over the past few years.

Rs500bn circular debt: No plan to print currency notes, says Dar

ISLAMABAD, June 23: Finance Minister Ishaq Dar on Sunday put up yet another spirited defence against attacks from opposition legislators who criticised the proposed budgetary allocations in their cut motions.

Responding to queries about the government’s plans to clear circular debt of over Rs500 billion within 60 days, and the ongoing talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Mr Dar told the National Assembly in categorical terms that there was no plan to print currency notes to clear the liability.

Six insurgents killed in encounter

QUETTA, June 23: Six insurgents, including their ‘commander’, were killed in an encounter with security forces in Dera Bugti district on Sunday, sources said.

A spokesman for the Frontier Corps confirmed the encounter and said a group of armed men attacked an FC checkpost in the Mat Sonari area of Dera Bugti district. When the personnel posted at the post returned fire the assailants fled the scene.

Zardari slams tourists’ killing

ISLAMABAD, June 23: President Asif Ali Zardari on Sunday condemned the terrorist attack on a group of foreign tourists in Gilgit-Baltistan and directed the authorities concerned to present a report to him on the incident.

Expressing shock and sorrow over the incident, the president said such acts of barbarity would not be tolerated and asked the authorities concerned to take stern action against perpetrators of the heinous crime.

Tour operators assail security agencies

ISLAMABAD, June 23: Tour operators criticised the law-enforcement agencies on Sunday after the Gilgit-Baltistan base camp attack and said they did nothing except checking buses on the Karakoram Highway.

They accused security personnel of not making efforts to apprehend the attackers who could not have reached the road in less than 18 hours because of the difficult terrain.
