Series of bomb attacks in Iraq kill at least 42

Posted:

BAGHDAD (AP) - A series of evening bombings near markets in and around Baghdad and other blasts north of the capital killed at least 42 people and wounded dozens of others Monday in the latest eruption of bloodshed to rock Iraq. The attacks were the latest in a wave of violence that has claimed more than 2,000 lives since the beginning of April. Militants, building on Sunni discontent with the Shiite-led government, appear to be growing stronger in central and northern Iraq. The violence came as tens of thousands of Shiites poured into the holy city of Karbala, 80 kilometers (50 miles) south of Baghdad, for the annual festival of Shabaniyah, marking the anniversary of the birth of the ninth-century Shiite leader known as the Hidden Imam. Tight security measures were in force to try to prevent insurgent attacks on the worshippers. One of the deadliest attacks came at night when two bombs placed near a market blew up less than a minute apart in Baghdads mostly Shiite neighborhood of Husseiniyah, killing ten people and wounding 30 others.Police said the second bomb went off among a group of people who had gathered at the scene to help the victims of the first blast.Earlier, police said that two car bombs exploded within minutes on a commercial street in the mixed neighborhood of Jihad in western Baghdad, killing nine people and wounding 21 others, police said. Also, four people were killed and nine others were wounded when a car bomb exploded near a line of shops in the Shiite-dominated area of al-Shurta al-Rabeaa.Interior Ministry spokesman Saad Maan Ibrahim said that al-Qaida is avoiding direct confrontation with the security forces and instead are choosing civilian targets.Police said car bomb exploded near a supermarket on a main commercial street in the Shiite Karrada neighborhood, killing five people and wounding 16.Just after sunset, police said a car bomb went off near an outdoor market in the Shiite suburb of Nahrawan, killing four civilians and wounding 15 others.Minutes later, a car bomb went off near a market in the Shiite-majority neighborhood of New Baghdad. Police said that three people were killed and 10 others were wounded. Minutes later, a second car bomb hit a bus stop in the same neighborhood, killing two people and wounding eight others. Also, two people were killed in a car explosion in the Christian-Shiite neighborhood of Garage al-Amana in southeastern Baghdad. In the morning, a provincial police officer in Ninevah said a suicide attacker rammed his explosives-laden car into an army patrol in the city of Mosul, killing a soldier and a police officer. He said that seven people, including two civilians, were wounded. Mosul is 360 kilometers (220 miles) northwest of Baghdad.Another officer said a second bomber blew set off his explosive-rigged belt inside a university campus in the city of Tikrit, killing a police officer. The city is 130 kilometers (80 miles) north of Baghdad. Two medical officials confirmed casualty figures. All spoke anonymously as they were not authorized to release information to reporters. There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but security forces and Shiite residents are frequently targeted by al-Qaidas Iraq branch.

Syria: Arming rebels is 'dangerous' US decision

Posted:

DAMASCUS (AP) - The decision by the United States and its allies to arm rebel groups in Syria is very dangerous and will prolong the violence and killing, Syrias foreign minister said Monday. The warning came as an artillery shell slammed into a village in central Syria and killed 11 people, including a woman and six of her children, activists said.Walid al-Moallem said sending more weapons to the opposition would also hinder efforts to convene a peace conference in Geneva to work on a negotiated solution. He said his country remains ready to take part but added President Bashar Assad will not step down. His resignation is a key opposition demand to be raised in any talks with Damascus.Al-Moallem spoke two days after an 11-nation group that includes the U.S. met in Qatar and agreed to step up military and other assistance to the Syrian rebels. He said all those who met in Qatar have Syrian blood on their hands.U.S. Secretary of States John Kerry, who took part in the conference, would not disclose details of the aid, saying only that it would re-balance the fight between the rebels and the government. Assads better-equipped forces are increasingly backed by fighters from Lebanons Hezbollah militant group. If they dream or are delusional about achieving a balance with the Syrian Arab Army, I think they need to wait years, and this wont be achieved, al-Moallem said. They will not be victorious no matter how much they conspire, al-Moallem added. He said arming the rebels is a dangerous decision because it aims at prolonging the crisis, prolonging the violence and killing and encouraging terrorism. The Friends of Syria gathering in Doha was Kerrys first meeting with his counterparts on the practicalities of assisting the Syrian rebels since President Barack Obama announced that the U.S. would send arms to the opposition. The decision came despite concerns that the weapons could fall into the hands of Islamic extremists in the rebel coalition.Obamas change of policy was partly based on a U.S. intelligence assessment that Assad had used chemical weapons, but Kerry expressed deeper concern about Assads foreign support. He said that Iranian as well as Hezbollah fighters had joined the war.Al-Moallem denied that any Iranian fighters were in Syria. Damascus acknowledges that Hezbollah is assisting government troops. The foreign minister said his regime was willing to take part in a peace conference, but would go to Geneva not to hand over power to the other side but rather to establish a real partnership and a national unity government that includes representatives of all Syrian society.President Bashar Assad will not step down, he said. If anyone has such illusions on the other side, my advice to them is not to go to Geneva, he said, rejecting the oppositions demand that Assads departure from power should top the agenda in at the peace conference. He nonetheless called the conference an opportunity that should not be missed. He insisted Syria will not accept any solutions or ideas dictated from the outside.Syrian government troops clashed with opposition fighters Monday in central provinces of Homs and Hama. An artillery shell slammed into the village of Tarfawi in Hama province, killing at least 11 people, including a woman and six of her children, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. The group relies on the network of activists inside Syria. It said government forces fired the shell.More than 93,000 people have been killed in Syrian conflict that started in March 2011 as largely peaceful protest against Assads rule. The uprising turned into a bloody insurgency in response to a military crackdown by regime forces on the protest movement. In the past year, the war has taken on increasingly sectarian overtones.

Family gathers as fears grow for 'critical' Mandela

Posted:

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) - The family of critically ill anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela gathered around his hospital bedside on Monday as millions in South Africa and across the world feared for the worst.Former president Mandela remains in a critical condition in hospital, South African President Jacob Zuma said in a televised address to an anxious nation broadcast around the globe. The doctors are doing everything possible to ensure his well being and comfort, Zuma said.Mandela, the hero of black South Africans battle for freedom during 27 years in apartheid jails, was rushed to hospital on June 8 with a recurring lung infection.Despite intensive treatment at Pretorias Mediclinic Heart Hospital, the 94-year-olds condition appears to have suddenly and dramatically deteriorated.Ex-wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela -- herself a figurehead of the anti-apartheid struggle -- daughters Zindzi Mandela-Motlhajwa and Zenani Mandela-Dlamini and scores of officials flocked to the hospital on Monday. The family visits, while common since Mandela was admitted 17 days ago, come amid heightened fears for the former statesmans health.Mandelas eldest daughter Makaziwe has said her father appears to be at peace with himself. He has given so much to the world. I believe he is at peace. At the same time she complained about the media frenzy over her fathers condition.Whether these are the last moments with us, to be with our dad, or there is still a longer (time), but they (media) must back off, she told CNN.Zuma on Monday also hailed the life of a man seen as the father of the nation, whose citizens must accept his frailty. All of us in the country should accept that Madiba is now old, Zuma said, using Mandelas clan name.I think what we need to do as a country is to pray for him to be well and that the doctors do their work.On the world stage Mandela is seen as a moral beacon that continues to shine long after the Nobel Peace laureate retired from public life.Mandela was last seen in public in 2010 at the football World Cup finals in South Africa. He is the father of democracy and this is the man who fought and sacrificed his life, said Zuma, who spent 10 years in jail on Robben Island at the same time as Mandela. The anti-apartheid hero went on to become South Africas first black president in 1994 after almost half a century of white minority rule.

US: No word yet from Taliban on peace talks

Posted:

KABUL (AP) - The United States and Afghanistan are still waiting to hear from the Taliban about opening peace talks, but remain willing to go ahead with negotiations despite a stir the militant group caused in opening a new office in Qatar, the main American envoy trying to spearhead the process said Monday.Following meetings with Qatari officials in Doha on Sunday and with Afghan President Hamid Karzai and other officials in Kabul on Monday, James Dobbins said the Taliban appeared to have made a miscalculation when it opened the office last week under the flag and name they used when in power in Afghanistan. The offices creation was intended as a step toward starting talks that Dobbins said would initially be between the Taliban and the Americans, then bring in Karzais government. But the Talibans flourish in opening it with a ceremony shown live on TV prompted quick condemnation from Karzai. He said the flag and calling the bureau an office of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan made it akin to an embassy and conferred legitimacy on the Taliban that they should not have.Amid pressure from the U.S. and Afghans, the Qatari government moved quickly to have the offending sign and flag taken down. There was a combination of misunderstandings and a desire on the Talibans part to score a propaganda advance, and they seem to have overplayed their hand and as a result probably lost rather than gained ground, Dobbins told a group of reporters. In a statement illustrating the challenges ahead, however, the Taliban said Monday that reports that their office had agreed to remove the sign and flag were baseless and fabricated though both are down at the site.Taliban spokesman Suhail Shaheen said the groups stance hadnt changed on the use of both. He did not say whether they planned on trying to put them back up.After the Taliban offices opening, Karzai lashed out, saying that international assurances made to him had been broken. He suspended bilateral talks with the U.S. on what presence American and coalition forces would keep in Afghanistan after 2014.After meeting with Karzai, Dobbins said the security agreement did not come up in their discussions together, but that their talks were quite positive. We reviewed where we are on the reconciliation front basically waiting to see whether the Taliban want to talk. It was quite upbeat, no real issues of controversy emerged. He noted that the U.S. had reacted to the Talibans move even before Karzai had made his public statement. We were outraged ourselves, because it was inconsistent with the assurances wed been given and the assurances wed given and we didnt need any prompting to determine that, he said. We thought the Afghan reaction was both entirely predictable, and entirely justified.Karzais office said in a statement that he had emphasized to Dobbins that Afghanistan still wants the peace process, and that it should be led by Afghans. Dobbins said the arrangement has always been that the U.S. and Taliban would meet and then within a few days the Afghan sides would begin meeting.Dobbins said it was still not clear whether the Taliban was prepared to participate at all, but said the signals have been that they are.Clearly they were serious enough to get to the point that we are... so it doesnt seem like an entirely spurious effort on their part, he said. But whether theyre prepared to participate under what we thought were the agreed arrangements, we just dont know. Well have to wait and see.

Nadal crashes out in 1st round at Wimbledon

Posted:

LONDON (AP) - For the second straight year, Rafael Nadal is leaving Wimbledon early after a stunning loss to a little-known player ranked in the hundreds. In one of the tournaments greatest upsets, an ailing Nadal was knocked out in straight sets Monday by 135th-ranked Steve Darcis of Belgium the Spaniards first loss in the opening round of any Grand Slam event. The free-swinging Darcis defeated the two-time champion 7-6 (4), 7-6 (8), 6-4 on Court 1, ending Nadals 22-match winning streak and eliminating one of the Big Four of mens tennis on the very first day of the grass-court Grand Slam. After serving an ace down the middle on match point, Darcis conceded he was as surprised as everyone.Nobody was expecting me to win, he said. So I had to play a good match, relax, and enjoy the game. Thats what I did. There were no surprises for the other big names: Defending champion Roger Federer, bidding for a record eighth Wimbledon title, and second-seeded Andy Murray both won in straight sets on Centre Court.Nadal was sidelined for seven months with a left knee injury after losing in the second round of Wimbledon last year. He seemed to be struggling physically Monday. He was unable to turn on the speed or use his legs to spring into his groundstrokes, limping and failing to run for some shots.Nadal declined to blame any injury and gave full credit to the 29-year-old Darcis, who had never beaten a top-5 player before and has yet to go beyond the third round of any Grand Slam.I dont ... talk about my knee this afternoon, Nadal said. Only thing that can say today is congratulate Steve Darcis. He played a fantastic match.Everything that I will say today about my knee is an excuse, and I dont like to put any excuse when Im losing a match like I lost today.Darcis, who had won only one previous match at Wimbledon, played the match of his life Monday, going for his shots and moving Nadal from corner to corner. Darcis amassed a total of 53 winners, compared with 32 for Nadal.Of course, Rafa didnt play his best tennis, Darcis said. I could see it. So I took advantage of it, tried to fight. Maybe he was not in the best shape ever. Maybe he didnt play his best match. But I have to be proud of me, I think.Darcis said he didnt know whether Nadal was injured, or was just troubled by the grass conditions. Not the day to talk about these kind of things, Nadal said. I am confident that I will have a good recovery and be ready for the next tournaments.Darcis finished the match in style, serving his 13th ace as Nadal failed to chase the ball.Darcis is the lowest ranked player to beat Nadal at any tournament since Joachim Johansson ranked No. 690 defeated the Spaniard in 2006 in Stockholm. Gustavo Kuerten, in 1997, was the last reigning French Open champion to lose in the first round at Wimbledon.Nadal was coming off his eighth championship at the French Open this month. But on this day he never looked like the player who has won 12 Grand Slam titles and established himself as one of the greatest players of his generation.Last year, Nadal was ousted in the second round by 100th-ranked Lukas Rosol, a match that finished under the closed roof of Centre Court. After that loss, Nadal took the rest of the year off to recover from the knee problem, missing the U.S. Open and Australian Open. Since returning to action this year, he had made it to the finals of all nine tournaments he entered, winning seven. After winning the French Open, Nadal pulled out of a grass-court tuneup in Halle, Germany. He came to Wimbledon without any serious grass-court preparation. The opponent played well, Nadal said. I had my chances. I didnt make it. So in grass (its) difficult to adapt yourself, to adapt your game. When you dont have the chance to play before, I didnt have that chance this year, is tougher. I didnt find my rhythm.Ten years after his first Wimbledon championship, Federer opened play on Centre Court as defending champion and looked right as home as he dismantled Victor Hanescu of Romania 6-3, 6-2, 6-0.This was a grass-court clinic lasting 68 minutes. Federer had 32 winners, seven aces and just six unforced errors. He won 90 percent of the points when he put his first serve in. When his serve is clicking, Federer usually is unbeatable. On this day, he won his first 15 service points and 24 out of the first 25.Im happy to get out of there early and quickly, Federer said. So it was a perfect day.Last year, Federer equaled Pete Sampras and William Renshaw with seven Wimbledon titles. He is now contending to become the first man to win the tournament eight times, which would bring his total of Grand Slam titles to 18.Federer came out wearing a white collared jacket with orange trim, then quickly got down to business. He never faced a break point and broke six times.Federer has a habit of making things look easy. And so it was in the opening game when, stranded at the net, he reached behind him for a reflex forehand volley that landed in for a winner. In the third set, Federer lifted a perfect backhand lob over the 6-foot-6 Hanescu for a break and a 5-0 lead.Another Wimbledon champion, 2002 winner Lleyton Hewitt, displayed his grass-court prowess by upending 11th-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka 6-4, 7-5, 6-3. In a match that finished in fading light on Court 1, the 32-year-old Australian fell to his knees at the baseline, then jumped up and pumped his fist as if he had just won the tournament.Playing his 15th consecutive Wimbledon and his 57th Grand Slam overall, Hewitt has bounced back from various injuries and reached the semifinals at Queens Club to serve notice that he is still dangerous.Advancing among the men were No. 6 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, No. 10 Marin Cilic, No. 15 Nicolas Almagro and No. 18 John Isner. Janko Tiparevic, seeded No. 14, lost to fellow Serb Viktor Troicki, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (5).

Spain beat Ghana 1-0 in Under-20 WCup

Posted:

ISTANBUL (AP) - Spain became the first team to advance to the knockout stages of the Under-20 World Cup, earning a lackluster 1-0 victory over Ghana on Monday. The United States boosted its chances of reaching the final 16 with a hard-fought 1-1 draw with France after a late strike by Daniel Cuevas.Spain, the tournament favorite, was a shadow of the team that routed the Americans 4-1. It rarely threatened and often appeared unsettled by Ghanas pressing style. The only real chance for Spain came in the 13th minute when Denis Suarez took a long ball and sent a pass to an unmarked Jese who tapped it in.Ghana had the better chances in the second period but struggled to finish.A header from Frank Acheapong went wide in the 55th and then Yiadome Boakye spun around and fired his shot just over the goal three minutes later.Ghanas Ebenezer Assifuah was taken down in the area in injury time by defender Israel Puerto but no penalty was called. In the earlier match, France looked on pace to win and advance after Auxerre striker Yaya Sanogo scored his second goal of the tournament from a penalty kick in the 48th minute. It came after Dimitri Foulquier was sideswiped by Americas Javan Torre in the area. The United States had few chances and missed those it did have the worst when Luis Gils penalty was easily saved in the 65th.But the Americans grew in confidence toward the end and it paid off in the 85th. Gil made up for his miss, curving a free kick into the area that Cuevas pounced on and scored.I feel like they were confused. They couldnt get the ball out and luckily it took a bounce my way and I got to push it in, Cuevas said. The late goal showed the character of the American team, he said. Our team is very united and we are always together and pushing forward, Cuevas said. If things dont go our way, we keep trying and keep trying until they do. Luckily we got the tie.Coach Tab Ramos admitted he was a little disappointed with the performance from the Americans early on but happy to come away with a draw.My disappointment is that in a game like today we should have gotten all three points, Ramos said. At the end of the day, it was great courage, effort by our team. With France and Spain having won their openers, the United States needs a victory in its final match against Ghana to advance outright. But it could still advance as one of the four best third-placed teams.France failed to repeat the form that beat Ghana 3-1 in its opener.I dont think we had a great control of the game tonight, France coach Pierre Mankowski said. It feels a bit strange because the U.S. team was hardly dangerous. But they had situations they should have never had. We conceded a penalty and a free-kick, which led to their goal.France will be without captain Paul Pogba for their final group match against Spain after a second yellow card in two matches. The boys were really disappointed at the end of the game, Mankowski said. Playing without Pogba for the last crucial game against Spain is something we have to figure out tomorrow when things will be quieter. In the other early match in Group B, Nigeria got its campaign on track with a 3-0 win over newcomer Cuba.Aminu Umar scored twice in four minutes and captain Abdul Ajagun got his third of the tournament as the African team easily beat Cuba.Nigeria opened the scoring when Olarenwaju Kayodefed fed Umar for the easy tap-in with 19 minutes gone. Four minutes later, Abdullahi Shehu drilled a cross which Umar flicked between his legs for the goal. The Nigerians completed the route in the 67th when Kingsley Madus cross was headed home by Ajagun. In the other Group B match, South Korea twice came from behind to draw with Portugal 2-2.

Injured Balotelli sent home from Confed Cup

FORTALEZA (AP) - Mario Balotelli was sent home from the Confederations Cup on Monday due to a strained thigh, leaving Italy without its top striker for both the semifinal vs. Spain and the final or third-place match.Having already been ruled out of Thursdays semifinal, Italy coach Cesare Prandelli decided to send Balotelli home after consulting with team physician Enrico Castellacci.Hes obviously very upset but theres just not enough time for him to return, Prandelli said. We just used good sense.Balotelli injured his left quadriceps during Italys 4-2 loss to Brazil on Saturday.Castellacci said that AC Milans medical staff will take over treatment.I checked out Balotelli this morning and, considering his condition, I dont think he will be able to recuperate before the final, Castellacci said. Its not worth taking more risks.Balotelli is the second Italy player sent home since the Brazil match, with fullback Ignazio Abate who also plays for Milan having left Sunday with a dislocated right shoulder.Meanwhile, midfielder Andrea Pirlo, who sat out Saturdays match with Brazil due to a muscle problem, continued to train separately from the rest of the squad.Pirlo continues to work out and were optimistic but we need to evaluate him day by day and we wont decide whether he can play until the last minute, Castellacci said.In a bit of positive news, midfielder Riccardo Montolivo has fully recuperated from a knock to the head and trained regularly Monday.Alberto Gilardino would seem to be Balotellis logical replacement if Prandelli sticks with his single-striker lineup. Or he could use several forwards such as Emanuele Giaccherini, Stephan El Shaarawy, Sebastian Giovinco, Alessio Cerci or Alessandro Diamanti.Without Mario well have to work much more collectively so well work more on that, Prandelli said. We have a few problems but the squad is responding well despite the difficulties.

Golf: Weary Rose withdraws from US PGA National

Posted:

BETHESDA (AFP) - US Open champion Justin Rose withdrew from the $6.5 million US PGA National on Monday, citing the mental and physical toll on him from winning his first major title and playing last week.Im disappointed to withdraw, Rose said in a statement. But the last three weeks have been extremely demanding both mentally and physically.Rose won the event in 2010 when it was staged at Aronimink in Philadelphia, near the Merion course where he won the US Open title on June 16.Rose played last week in the Travelers Championship, where he finished in a share of 13th.World number one Tiger Woods withdrew from the event last week, a left elbow strain preventing him from defending his title at Congressional Country Club in a tournament operated by, and benefitting, his own charity foundation. This tournament has been very good to me -- especially in 2010 -- and I would play if I felt I could, Rose said. Tiger and his foundation run a great tournament and I wish I could be there. On Sunday, Rose admitted to final-round fatigue at the PGA event, where the 32-year-old Englishman began the last day three strokes off the pace but could only manage a par-71.I was just a little clumsy when I needed to be sharp, Rose said Sunday. Having a chance and not being able to kind of finish it out cleanly, that probably shows more fatigue than anything.Im still able to put one foot in front of the other. I think Im still OK, but I guess its just that little bit of sharpness that I might be lacking. After the grind of taking his first major crown by outshooting Phil Mickelson at Merion, the bloom went off Rose when he spent days in New York handling promotional and media requests, including television appearances. Now Rose looks forward to three weeks off to rest and recover before next months British Open at Muirfield.Ill have time off trying to prepare for the Open championship, he said. So Im really looking for those weeks to rebuild any energy. My goal basically for the next few weeks is to make sure Im sharp and ready for Muirfield. With Woods also out until the British Open, the spotlight this week falls upon Australians Adam Scott, the reigning Masters champion, and Jason Day, who shared second at the US Open for his fourth top-three effort in the past 10 majors. Days only US PGA title came at the 2010 Byron Nelson Championship. The field of 132 players at the par-71 suburban Washington layout where Rory McIlroy won the 2011 US Open also includes eighth-ranked American Brandt Snedeker, who won last years US PGA playoff crown.

Oil jumps after stocks cut into big losses

NEW YORK (AP) - The price of oil had a sudden burst Monday after the stock market tried to put the brakes on a four-day skid.Benchmark oil for August delivery rose $1.49 to close at $95.18 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Oil sank by $4.55 a barrel, or 4.7 percent, on Thursday and Friday after the Federal Reserve spooked investors by signaling the end of a bond-buying program that has boosted the economy.Oil fell initially Monday because of growing worries that Chinas decision to clamp down on informal lending could hamper growth in a major energy consuming country. Oil dropped as low as $92.67 a barrel.Once stocks clawed back from their lowest levels of the day, oil moved higher, gaining nearly $2 a barrel in two hours. The Dow Jones industrial average fell nearly 250 points in the first half-hour of trading Monday, then finished with a loss of 140 points.Brent crude, which is used to price oil used by many U.S. refineries to make gasoline, rose 25 cents to finish at $101.16 a barrel. In other energy futures trading on the Nymex, natural gas slipped 3 cents to finish at $3.74 per 1,000 cubic feet (28.32 cubic meters).

Dollar rally ends against major currencies

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The dollar Monday took a breather from recent gains, falling against most major currencies after comments from US Federal Reserve officials suggested the central bank would not immediately end its accommodative stance.Near 21450 GMT, the euro bought $1.3124, up a tick from $1.3122 late Friday. The dollar dipped to 97.74 yen compared with 97.87.The dollar fell against the Swiss franc and the British pound. The euro traded at 128.28 yen, down from 128.45.The US economic calendar was thin Monday, but remarks by a number of Federal Reserve officials reverberated through the market. The dollar has moved higher against other currencies since Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke signaled Wednesday the Fed was likely to scale back its bond-buying program in the coming months.Dallas Federal Reserve Chairman told a London event the Fed was not exiting accommodative policy, only scaling it back, Dow Jones Newswires reported.David Song, currency analyst at DailyFX, said the euro drifted higher after New York Federal Reserve President Bob Dudleys rather cautious tone on the US economy.Dudleys speech in Switzerland emphasized that the Fed has a strong interest in ensuring financial stability. But Song predicted the euros rally could be short-lived as European leaders prepare for a summit later this week. The European Central Bank faces increased pressure to shore up the ailing economy, he said, leading to possible easing in the second half of 2013.The ongoing turmoil in the euro-area may continue to drag on the exchange rate, Song said.Kathy Lien, managing director at BK Asset Management, said Mondays retreat in the dollar did not spell the end of the dollars rally. There were no fundamental drivers behind the reversal in the greenback outside of exhaustion, Lien said. The pound rose to $1.5437 compared with $1.5418 Friday. The dollar also fell against the Swiss franc, declining to 0.9329 from 0.9339.
