AG drops bombshell in Supreme Court: PPP govt wrote secret letter on Swiss caseBy Nasir IqbalISLAMABAD, June 26: The NRO saga refuses to end for President Asif Ali Zardari. The government dropped a bombshell on Wednesday when it informed the Supreme Court that though the previous PPP government had written a letter to the Swiss authorities in compliance with the court order, it also sent a second secret communication to a law firm requesting for an official confirmation about the Swiss authorities’ inability to revive $60 million graft cases against the president. The secret letter was written to Dr Nicholas Jeanding of law firm Fontanetassocies Geneva by former law secretary retired Justice Yasmin Abbasey on Nov 22 last year, Attorney General Muneer A. Malik revealed before a three-judge bench which had taken up the NRO implementation case. | ||||||
Hopes for revival of dialogue with IndiaBy Baqir Sajjad SyedISLAMABAD, June 26: Pakistan is hopeful of resumption of stalled peace dialogue with India in a few weeks in which trade is likely to take precedence over core bilateral disputes. Soon after its installation, the PML-N government had signalled to India its desire for restarting the talks held up since January due to flare-up of tensions along the Line of Control. The Indian government has promised to send its proposals for resumption of talks, which are being awaited. | ||||||

In a written reply, Attorney General Muneer A. Malik informed the Supreme Court that the federal government, after invoking Article 6 against the accused, had instructed the interior secretary to ask the director general of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to set up a special investigation team to conduct an inquiry into the acts of the former military ruler which led to the imposition of emergency on Nov 3, 2007. | ||||||

A senior government official told Dawn on Wednesday that Finance Minister Ishaq Dar had categorically told his economic aides that if the IMF came up with tough conditions the government would not agree to them and would work immediately on plan-B to avoid becoming hostage to external dictates. | ||||||

A senior government official told Dawn that the recommendation for the tariff hike had been made by the energy sector task force appointed by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif under his national energy policy to divert scarce natural resource to power generation. | ||||||
